      @@qyuetx Not an answer, but speaking of Portal 2, you can use "fire_rocket_projectile" without enabling cheats! Best use I found is in smashing monitors.
      I also fckn HATE how limited the fov commands are!
      Some people go as far as to edit the dll files, which I don't think is a good idea when VAC checks them.

    I love games that let you access the console. Older CoDs let you access the console as well, but later on they locked it down. I'm replaying some of the older (and newer) CoDs right now and being able to use the console via custom clients is super nice. To change the FOV/scale, make toggle binds for the background music and so on. I also always use "status" in L4D2 to check what server I've joined.

      You're on point bro it's so convenient, I can't play Valorant there's no console, on CS2 I feel at home, I knew COD started on Id Tech 3 but didn't know the console was accessible, thx for telling me.

      @@qyuetx Yup. They left the console unlocked till I believe W@W (CoD5). MW2 already has it locked, but via mods/custom clients you can access it again. In Titanfall 2 you can also use the console via launch command. Tf2 is a great game too for messing around with the console and general modding. You can mod some of the textures and text in the game. Custom ejection lines for the titans, custom ammo/gun status displays on some of the guns and so on. Good video btw.

    Actually... Maybe they didn't have a "Visible" developer console as we know today but Doom did have Commands to use for the game and many more options.
    For example in MSDOS before starting a game you could put commands called "Parameters" where you can for put the skill you want to play on, select the episode, to record a demo, play with a friend in lan joining by a command, configuration and more...
    Obviously most of these were obsolete when source-ports appeared but that there was commands, there were.

      Valid point, I didn't think of mentioning command line arguments which at least from Quake can input console commands like +map start and I didn't include the need of -console on retail versions of Half-Life being necessary because how many people really have a retail copy?

      cli arguments are cli arguments, not a developer console. also, config was done through the program "setup". although the network stack it relied on utilised virtual networks, I wouldn't really call the multiplayer LAN-only either

    2:49 actually it's pretty simple. The green console is what Half-life got when it got updated and released on Steam because that's what the original UI for Steam also looked like. Back in the day if you had a CD Key of Half-Life 1 you could activate it on Steam and get a Steam copy and you still can activate a WON key to this very day. I have an original WON (World Opponent Network) physical copy of half-life patched to the last version you could get for the disc copy. So if we're talking about the "classic" console then that would be the WON version which also has the beautiful animated main menu art that they finally added back with the 25th anniversary update.

      It sounds backwards to call the VGUI console the classic one but that's what most people are used to right? 2003 to now is way longer than 1998 to 2003, I understand your point tho, if you played since WON the slide console probably feels classic to you and you're not wrong for that.

    1:36 This doesn't affect the video at all but it's interesting to note that according to John Romero, Quake started with a clean codebase i.e. they didn't reuse any code from Doom, meaning there's no technical connection between idTech 1 and 2 besides being made by the same people. ☝🤓

      @@qyuetx True, and even id hasn't even done that since Quake, since afaik even Doom Eternal's engine is a descendant of idTech 2

    The HL1 console was changed with the Steam version of the game. It replaced all the UI elements with VGUI, backported from Source.
    Also, the answer to the FOV question is default_fov in Goldsource and fov_desired in Source.

    I was hoping to hear some context on Carmack's inclusion of a console at all, I still never figured out whether it was common for games of the time, whether it was directly inspired by vim/emacs, or what. Also, "I.D. Tech" lol

      @@qyuetx it's pronounced like a bit like "Ed", but with kind of an "ih" sound instead. it's the word "Id" from Freud's whole psychological mythos about a part of humans that just wants to consume things and feel good
      it's also a wordplay on the company's old name "Ideas from the Deep", but the "I" isn't pronounced the same way

    The love of my life... the color option has been a feature around since source i guess? Basically theres the normal Msg function that outputs with white color, Warning function that outputs messages with yellow color and Error function that outputs to the console with redcolor. But theres also the ConColorMsg which lets you use whatever color you want.
    The real fun is that all of these are exported making it extremely trivial to find and call em externally to make it output whatever you want

      it's actually a quake/idtech custom, though the backslash of all things seems to be more preferred by the engine

    in my opinion the source console ( all three engines) made the consoles a part of the game doesn t feel like something you shouldn t touch but something you should experiment and use on a daily basis to improve your experience
    or to spend 10 hours on google to find how to slightly change your gun position

      You can still use 0-1 to change values, binary variables just show false for 0 and true for 1, it's a bit awkward with stuff like cl_showpos that have a 0, 1 and 2, that can't use true-false, somebody at Valve really wanted this I guess

    i think the wolf3d engine is it's own thing, doom was def the first version of idtech tho
    also i believe the goldsrc console first popped up in 2003, to match what steam had (since at the time, steam had that same green blocky interface)
    everything else seems pretty damn accurate tho, nice lil vid

      I guess it was the first Source 2 game but now that CS2 is out I can use it for the Source 2 bit since the console interface is the same, I haven't tried Dota 2 but I would expect it to function the same as well only with It's own set of variables
