All great ideas for me as I'm flying with my chair for the first time. I'm buying a travel bag for my chair. Yes taking the joystick off to. Labeling things like brakes good idea. The people don't have time to figure it out so all good ideas.

I would for sure feed through the straps through somehow to all the pieces before strapping them down. They are great at losing luggage and you just gave them 3-4 extra parts to lose.

I printed all the labels on neon orange sticker paper and put a full directions on top of top of everything duct taped to the seat pan.
Back in 2010, flying home to Toronto from Vegas, the GEL battery for ventilator on my chair, got flagged by TSA, we were not allowed to speak to anyone to explain that it was FAA certified and ended up having to leave the battery behind !👍🏻👍🏻 AND the kicker being, we waltzed in to the cabin with the EXACT same battery to power the ventilator during the flight…

Installing handles pretty much guarantees someone will try to use them as such . After all ,why are handles there if they are not supposed to be used as such ?
If you do use them , I suggest that you use the weaker option . Lifting from here will damage your rail. Best to let the handle fail first.
If the chair has tiedown points , maybe use those instead.
Consider using 4 eye bolts instead of two handles. Use a cheap carabiner clip between the bolts and the strap to control where the asssebly will fail so expensive components are not damaged.

Dan- You are so fun to watch. I think your side handles for ratchet straps and the labels are a smart Ideas. Im amazed how much info and tips I have learned and I am a wheelchair user (Mind Blowing)

Here in Europe, you have to disconnect the battery for our Travel. On my scooter, this was an easy task as the battery box could simply be detached, but on my Power chairs this is very much more difficult and requires removing bodywork.
I used to be a very frequent flyer, and found the easiest way to do it was to take a small scooter, a pride, and it worked well. Of course it always got bashed and bruised, but never seriously broken. Unfortunately, I narrow have to use a proper power chair with a joystick 24 seven. I’ve yet to try taking this on a plane, but I expect it to be, a little more interesting, to say the least!

those bags in the meat aisle at the grocery store are good for wrapping the joystick in.

Once, my power wheelchair was damaged over 75%, and I only had it for a few months. It took forever to get the airlines to agree to cover the repair costs. Since then, we have done things similar to you: strip everything down and secure it. We typically wrap my joystick in bubble wrap, which has worked dramatically. I keep hearing that they're working on airplanes, where you would drive in and sit in your wheelchair, which would be ideal on several fronts.

@@TotallyNormal-@TotallyNormal -This concept is beautiful, but I wonder if doorways and aisles could accommodate power wheelchairs. Another question is how we would get airlines to want to buy airplanes with these capabilities.

Awesome ideas for the break release handles I've got good results with some heavy duty adhesive heat shrink as handle grips and they seem to be decent enough for that purpose all though it doesn't make good bolt caps 😅 I tried it with my lift but I instead went to those who we shall not speak of lol and got some peel and stick vynil flooring and protected the base boards instead 😁

I flew from Vienna to Tokyo (about 11 hours) and back with my foldabe powerchair (similar to Eagle HD) without any issues. I had to remove batteries and take them withn me to the cabin because they are Lithium ones. I toke with me joystick as well (just one connector). There was one veeeery funny moment though... after landing in Tokyo, transfering to my chair, installing batteries and joystick, chair didn't work... it turns out that someone disconnected one cable from controller box... they probably thought that it was a battery. 😀

I flew to South America in 2001 in my manual chair. On the way back we stopped in Miami to swap planes and American Airline left my chair in S America. The airport said a custom fit chair with my name on it was theirs. Several hours later after they knew thy messed up it made it to Miami. AA gave me first class to Atlanta (1hr trip) for their screw up. I've yet fly in my powerchair.

use 2 tie downs , like the ones for when you travel on bus or strap it down in a paratransit van ... mush much stronger and too small to be mistaken as a handle.

I’ve flown southwest multiple times I have an F3 just recline your back disengage the motors, and very important cut all power to the chair otherwise they’ll turn it on to try too drive it forget it’s on then the actuators get activated mid-flight and your chairs broke when you land (personal experience) good thing the airline has contracted companies too fix whatever’s broken ontop of that you demand compensation

In Europe you have to have a battery disconnect switch, or you'll have to disconnect the batteries.
And I've been told my by therapist to take off the cushion and bring it in the plane with me.

The airline lost the tray for my power chair once so now I just check it in and it’s kept in the overhead luggage compartment. I also keep my joystick knob in my backpack

Awesome video. Great hacks. Given me some things to look in to.
We've flown with Permobile powerchairs a good dozen or so times. Minor damage here and there. Nothing worth pursuing a claim over. It helps that most of those times are in and out of Orlando - they're very accustomed to powerchairs. The big challenge is usually the ground crew knowing how to load/unload and use the powerchair lift. Watching them do this is nerve wracking. Where possible, we'll choose flights with larger airframes so that the crew has more options when it comes to loading.
    Standard procedure for us...
Lower back seat as low as possible. Remove headrest and take on board (thumbscrew - no tools). Slide joystick to inside armrest position. Turn off and flip power breaker. Disengage breaks. Breaks and power have labels (so many ground crew has thanked me for this - labels are everyone's friend). Meet groundcrew outside aircraft and show them where to handle the chair, break and power, etc. Say a prayer.
Also - rain cover. Strapped down. That one time they unloaded during a rainstorm was horrible. Yeah - the chair protected the electronics. The joystick had a cover (custom padding - which I don't do anymore). But hoo-boy. Wet butt is no fun. Also - rain cover helps with some of that abrasion damage that happens in the cargo hold on occasion.
Side note: we still run in to inexperience ground crews. But I'm impressed to find more and more who have experience with these devices. And a proper understanding how important they are to their owners. It doesn't guarantee safety for your gear. But its been improving the odds.

I know the facility you are talking about in Ft. Wayne, it's a really good one. And yes 400 chairs is a lot! But I think most people travel by car with the exception of the west coast teams. Looks like you got the chair prepped as best you can, now all you have to do is cross your fingers and pray the ramp workers aren't idiots. I think that's a huge part of it imo.

When they built those chairs in China from the ground up, they ship them in a shipping container then send to the United States. And I see you giving me a great idea when I get ready to go over into the Philippines.
    Thanks for your good idea.

I used to fly from Chicago to Arizona multiple times and had mixed results in the way they handled my power chair with a sip and puff system!with the 21st-century beast of a chair with lithium battery that is approved for airline travel. after transferring to the aisle chair which reminds me of my Hannibal lector all you need is the mask? Remove the bottom cushion and use it in my airline seat. Using the gym bag place that where the bottom cushion was placing the leg rest and one armrest underneath the bag placing the headrest on top of that. Using ratchet straps x pattern down to the tiedown points on all four corners and using industrial or moving Saran wrap to wrap the chair completely up with the wheels only thing visible and functional. My freewheel lovers are extremely stiff and don't move during flight. I have explained countless times on my chair weighing almost 300 pounds and laugh every time they have to play catch when he gets the bottom of the conveyor belts. Good luck and enjoy your flight

Great video! There is a group of us working to make it possible for those of us using power chairs to ride in our chairs in the Airplane proper! I know this does not do much good for anyone taking an extra chair along - however as you have demonstrated, there are ways of making it work. I myself have also added a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper basically saying: “this is my chair and my legs please respect it so that I can use it at the other end of the ride! Pluss, like you, I disconnected the removable parts and carry them on the plane so far, this has worked well, though I consider myself extremely lucky considering what I have seen and heard from others!
I know that there is a way of shutting down the control locking people out, however, I agree with another viewer, you need to shut down the entire chair. I would like to see an Easy way to do this perhaps an easy disconnect so you can render the chair non-movable…. Or something like that…

It's more expensive when you use car and ship to go to your destination for an island, but here in Greece, i'm not sure if they will treat to my eletric wheelchair with the respect it deserved.
I haven't yet do trip with plane with my e-chair but, i have hear a couple of bad staff about broken front wheel arms or joystick's.
They need to learn about our disabled community all airports and air companies. In Ioannina city i live they haven't truck elevator to put me in the plane. They said ''we will carry you with our hands''. Yes i'm lightweight (55 kilos) but its very scary situation and akward. So i said "HAHA NO THANKS" to them, it's weird to said this but i feel safer when i'm in car for about 4 hours trip and 10 hours ship trip and my e-char still as I left it before the trip, complete and functional without cut and do undo bolts and staff.
Sorry for my english skills :)
    Greetings from Hellas - Greece.
