    It's also a restriction of the freedom of people who are not "of color". A relationship is a mutual thing, so if interracial marriages aren't allowed, it is necessarily a restriction of both people's freedoms. So, it's kind of weird to say phrase it the way you did.

      Paul Kennedy But the fundamental question is what do these laws do? In the sense of what much of this video argues in terms of speech acts. Sure the white person cannot marry a PoC, but within a broader legal context of oppression of non-whites the laws serve to reinforce the idea that non-whites are not deserving of marriage to whites. Moreover, given that the arguments for anti-miscegenation laws were often explicitly about racial purity, the purpose of the laws are quite clear.

    • @sirmeowthelibrarycat

      Paul Kennedy 👨🏻‍🏫 Quite right! I would like to know how to describe myself, if I am not a 'person of colour ' 😣 I am certainly not white i.e. albino, but a somewhat washed out pink, cream and beige in various degrees! I am also a member of the only human species on this planet, Homo sapiens sapiens. Thus, there cannot be racism, another invented term, as it would denote extreme self-hatred. 👨🏻‍🏫🏛🇬🇧

    • @paulk314
      @paulk314 7 лет назад +23

      Avram Reisman: Yes, I agree that that has been the basis for the laws. However, the laws would only be "necessary" if there are whites who don't agree and want to marry a non-white person. In that case, the law violates the rights of the white person and the non-white person, and that is necessarily the case. So, to answer our question "what do these laws do?" They violate the rights of both individuals.

    • @kidrebel1121
      @kidrebel1121 7 лет назад +93

      A law banning interracial relationships does infringe on the rights of everyone, but the consequences of such a law isn't shared equally. America used to have laws against interracial relationships, so we already know how such a law would be enforced. And history shows us that it was worse for PoC than it was for white folks. If a black man and a white women were caught together, the black man would be killed and the white women would be ostracized. Both people suffered, but one clearly was punished more than the other.

      @@mickkeker1990 There are no genetic races. There is a much genetic difference between two random Sub-Saharan Africans as there is between them and you (in fact, Africa is the most genetically diverse region in the world). • @RoboBoddicker
      @RoboBoddicker 5 лет назад +34

      @The Big Bad White Man Nothing you said in that comment is true, so I'm not really sure how to respond.
      I mean, no, there *is* greater genetic variation in Africa than anywhere else in the world. Not because of Africa's varied climates, but because human beings first evolved in Africa, and our species lived there for most of our history. So Africa contains the majority of our evolutionary development.
      And, yes, there is as much variation between two given Africans as between a European and an African. Or any other people on Earth. Racial categories are based on recently evolved, superficial traits. They are politically expedient (it's easy to tell that a group of people come from far away and have different customs when they look different), but they don't have a deep genetic basis.
      And even if you just want to categorize humans based solely on appearance, human phenotypic variations are so gradual and diverse across the globe that an objective taxonomy based on appearance is essentially useless.
      Races exist as political categories that vary from culture to culture. A culture's racial definitions can be politically expedient *for that specific culture*, but they don't really have a wider, objective meaning. There will never be a single set of "races" that all humans can agree on.

      @@bunjier4041 So I got to thinking about it and at first I was considering that maybe using the word cuck as an insult is rude because you shouldn't make fun of somebody on account of their fetish even if you don't get it, but then I also kind of thought that maybe a cuckold would be into the part where it's an insult? Kind of an interesting thing to think about, it's probably more of a personal thing and as a rule it's not ideal to use something like that pejoratively, but it is an oddball circumstance of language and culture.
      Anyway I did Google up 'wagecuck' And there's a pretty raucous collection of very earnest cartoons depicting folks Fight Clubbing real hard which is hilarious for a wide variety of ironic reasons that I won't really get into here, and also directed me to an amazing Reddit post about a kid who called in to a radio station impersonating a school district superintendent to get exams rescheduled on account of a light dusting of snow which was very funny and I enjoyed quite a bit.

    This video articulates something I've been wrestling with intellectually for a long time, so thank you for that, Olly. I have been thinking lately about whether speech can be violent in and of itself, even if the content of the speech is not a direct threat of violence.
    My worry is that White Supremacists are incredibly good at strategically framing their ideas. If you do not protest them, they are supported by the universities and talk shows who will provide them a platform. If you do protest them, then you and your protest group are mocked in the media and labelled opponents of free speech. If you do not argue against them, they get to spread their misinformation. If you do argue against them, you implicitly grant them legitimacy by demonstrating that their ideology is "just another political issue."
    I think that we need to start thinking more strategically about how we discuss, engage with, and frame White Supremacy. I do not know what the best strategy is.

It created an explosion of wealth for a few countries far beyond what they had before, but the Ottoman Empire for instance was a mighty force with lots of wealth going around long before the discovery of oil. As were the other caliphates that proceeded it. I mean could I not ask why the European world was mostly impoverished before colonialism? About the Irish stuff, I just found out it exists, the thing I don't understand is that, even if it were correct, why does it matter? What argument are you gonna make? "Well, they were also enslaved, SEE SLAVERY WAS NOT RACIST IT ALSO INCLUDED PEOPLE THAT WE NOW CONSIDER WHITE"? "Yeah, black people were opressed, bue how about we talk about the Irish?"
    It's like when people say: it wasn't 6M deaths in the Holocaust, it was about a half/third/thenth...the number is not the important part, it's that it was systematic ethic cleansing. Even if it's 2 orders of magnitude off it shouldn't change how you see it.

    • @GordonGarvey
      @GordonGarvey 4 года назад

      The "white slavery myth" isn't even a white nationalist talking point. Though muslims did take many white slaves from Europe. The irish had it as bad if not worse than the American slaves, reducing the argument down to the fact that the Africans were legally slaves is rediculous.

      @@GordonGarvey I am aware that many white people throughout history and even today are slaves. I didn't mean it was irrelevant in general or false. I meant to say that bringing it up to diminish black slavery in the context of pre civil war USA does not make slavery more acceptable. The same way saying "there were less than 6M killed in the Holocaust" does not make me go "oh then the Nazis weren't that bad, 6M is something, but if you only killed 600 000 people, then you ain't as bad"

    • @GordonGarvey
      @GordonGarvey 4 года назад +1

      If the number didn't matter they wouldn't have exaggerated it. There's been many more genocides throughout history that most people haven't heard of because of the spotlight put on the jewish one. Would you call the systematic replacement of Europeans with non-Europeans a genocide? If the number doesn't matter then you shouldn't have any problem recognising that the goal and results will be the same. It's too insidious for people to recognise but in time it will have successfully destroyed our national identities. If you have no problem with that I see no reason for you calling the jewish genocide that, might as well just be another mass murder.

    • @alexsere3061
      @alexsere3061 4 года назад +5

      @@GordonGarvey no, the "white genocide" it's not a genocide, and the methods do matter, if fact it's what matters the most TO ME. The holocaust is not the same as your "white genocide" primarily because one of them had concentration camps and systematic killings, while the other happens because people are not prejuditials and have children (which is the opposite of murder). The number is important, I agree, but sometimes an atrocity is so hideous that even if it happened to 1% of the people I (this is a personal opinion) wouldn't be less outraged by it. This is a personal opinion, of course. If I killed your whole family, and then told you "actually, I just killed your parents and siblings" would your level of anger drop significantly? Or would it stay the same? My would stay roughly the same, but, once again, this is subjective.

    I really enjoyed how you broke this down, and agree with almost everything said. However, the more common myth in America about the Irish immigrants tends to be that "they were worth less than a slave" socially speaking.
    This idea comes predominantly from the first railroads and canals in America, where they preferred to hire the Irish sometimes paying in whiskey alone, for blasting away stone with black powder (pre TNT). It was true that some of the Jobs were so deadly that slaves were not enlisted due to their (sick to say) "monetary value as a renewable resource/labor". Where as they could spend another dollar on an Irish teenager to go set powder charges for 2 bottles of booze (one for them to drink and one to barter or sell).
    So while that has nothing close to do with being enslaved- it does also show how the "Titans of Industry", felt about human life vs capital.

    Hitler (plus one US president) placed less importance on *truth* in his speeches than simply eliciting an emotional response. It didn’t matter to the crowd once they’d been whipped into a frenzy by fiery, inflammatory, racially charged rhetoric. It still works if the crowd WANTS to believe the lie, and they’d will ALWAYS accept it over any truth they don’t want to believe.

    Wonderful advice about not only thinking about the content of a message, but also what it does or can do. Sometimes when a bad message is true or at least not disprovable , we start to lack convincing aguments against it. As you briefly mentioned, I see this advice apply also to personal life. It seems to me a powerful tool, and I will try to remind myself of it regularly! Thank you!

    Punshing nazis is the best thing you can do to promote nazis in my opinion.
    The right has a persecution complex. You just make it worse if you persecute them. Every antifacist punshing nazis will make the alt right able to point at the left and say: Yeah we are under attack, it is us against them.
    The right wing idiology requieres this narrativ. I think the best thing is to restrict their right to free speech and to assembly if they promote violence or racist idiology.
    But the state has to do that, not the left, because if you do and they still have a platform to speak about it, all you do is recrouting more nazis.
    It is the same with torturing islamist terrorists. Nothing is better propaganda than Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib...

  • @johndoeanon445

    I'm speaking from a neutral, hypothetical point, here. My question is: If your opponents (Nazis and such in this case) are so obviously wrong, why wouldn't you want them to reveal their opinions? If they're as wrong as you say, then you can simply prove them wrong. And if they happen to be right, isn't it your responsibility as a logically thinking person to accept that you were wrong and someone else, however "bad" you think that their ideas are, is right?

    • @casersatz
      @casersatz 7 лет назад +19

      Because no matter how obviously wrong they are, they will still appeal to at least a few people if given the chance. White supremacy is an emotional notion, and it's hard to debate feels. It can be done, sure, if one is eloquent and empathetic enough, but in the shadow of Nazism, one cannot take that chance. Fascism had its chance to make its case and it failed more thoroughly than perhaps any other ideology in world history. If an idea fails so completely, you don't bother dredging it up again. That's how the marketplace of ideas is supposed to work, in theory: you fail, your product is gone.

      The thing is, if it is the only possible course of action it must be used. Imagine a rapist roaming the streets where you live, attacking (raping) people left and right. Women, men, children. Just anybody. And the authorities don't do enough to stop him. Police arrest him but he gets released (on bail or just because the people who decide these things think he will appear in court when he has to) and he resumes raping people. He actually shows up for his court date and is sentenced to only nine months in jail for whatever reason. There he manages to rape people as well. And he gets released after those nine months. Again, he resumes raping people outside of jail. Everybody knows his face but still he manages to rape people. This goes on and on. Short stint in jail and long stints in prison follow. He continuosly gets released and he continuosly rapes. When private citizens lock him up the authorities release him.
      Isn't it necessary to at least render this man incapable of raping? Which can (possibly) only be done in a violent way?
      These things take place all over the world. Not exactly this thing but things that are absolutely comparable.

    The issue with punching nazis and why there is backlash from those that aren’t nazis or even are left wing is that it adds fuel to the “left is out to get us” bit and encourages them to go out in crowds. This turns each occurrence of a pinch into a larger and larger brawl without much of a way to stop until one side backs down, and the nazis aren’t gonna be that side.
    It’s not much of a matter of if it’s right or not, it’s a matter of what the consequences will be and I didn’t see these consequences make an appearance in this video.

    The exception clause in the 13th amendment allowed slavery to continue as punishment for crime, even crimes like loitering, and debts, freed African American slaves could become the property of their previous slave owners all over again as a punishment and could be whipped and chained and have their punishments lengthened for arbitrary reasons… even if it wasn’t as bad as chattel slavery because their children would be free, it was still really messed up, and I think their descendants are owed reparations
    In Ireland and Scotland simply speaking Gaelic or wearing the tartan was a crime punishable with the same punishment of forced labor in America, it was a way to erase their culture, families were broken apart, it was awful… even if it wasn’t as bad as chattel slavery because their children would be free, it was still really messed up, and I think their descendants are owed reparations
    You pointed out that some people could obtain land but sharecropping usually didn’t work out that way, Sharecropping was bad because it increased the amount of debt that poor people owed the plantation owners. Sharecropping was similar to slavery because after a while, the sharecroppers owed so much money to the plantation owners they had to give them all of the money they made, it wasn’t as bad as chattel slavery, but I feel like comparing everything to chattel slavery misses the point

    If the Nazis were "White Supremacy in its purest form," as you say, why were their major allies Japan and Italy? Italy is of course White (European) but has a larger genetic component, about half, of Near Eastern origin than any European nation but Greece. Also, about four times more blond, blue-eyed supermen were fighting for the Allies than for the Axis. (So did the outcome of the war prove Aryan supremacy?) The answer to my own question is that the Nazis were German nationalists first, and racists a distant second. They had no problem oppressing other Whites and allying with non-Whites to advance specifically German interests. Second, how is White supremacism in Europe any different from Jewish supremacism in Israel, Han supremacism in China, Chicano supremacism in Mexico, Japanese supremacism in Japan, Mashona supremacism in Zimbabwe, etc? Isn't it perfectly normal for people to want a country where their ethnic group can feel secure from domination by other ethnic groups? The problem with the Nazis was not that they were ethnic nationalists, it was that they were imperialists: they wanted to rule over non-Germans, and were willing to kill many to have their way. The whole history of Europe since the French Revolution has been about the struggle of ethnic groups for self-determination. You lefties were on the side of European ethno-nationalism throughout the 19th century, or have you forgotten? Now, you are only on the side of non-White ethno-nationalism. There is a nice word for people like you: traitor.

I can't speak for your country, but in mine, children were taken from their families and tribes and were often forced (with 'punishment' aka abuse) to drop their original given names and their native languages. Death was not a rarity, particularly given the mistreatment a lot of these kids received.

    Some guy was on the Daily Show just before Jon Stewart retired talking about his book on Slavery of White People, though I can't remember his name or his book, but he claimed that there were far more White than Black Slaves in History because of how when people were brought to Africa they weren't registered, and so were never counted as Slaves. I have never been able to find the person or their many paged book online since.

    The only cure for a bad argument are counter-arguments & discussion not deplatforming because you can't kill an idea.

      If that were true you'd engage with the video. This video anticipated and countered that argument. You've just sort of lazily presented it yourself. You can believe this position if you'd like but you have to be willing to fight for it.

      I presented some arguments in reply to other comments on this page. I didn't present arguments in this specific comment thread to make a clutter-free point; no one likes a wall of text. Im definitely ready to fight for this and agree with you on that point.

    I wholly appreciate this video. It feels like it was genuinely necessary to my life.
    Thank you so much for making it, and for the thought/humor that went into this video.
