    Thank you for making a REAL video about resource guarding showing a dog that is serious about guarding its bone. This was helpful. I've been using your strategy with my Red Healer/Border Collie puppy and it's working, but at times seems to be even worse. It's frustrating. Thanks for letting me know this is normal.

      I’m glad to find that it’s normal. I have a Labrador that is 1 and she just started displaying signs. I never had to deal with anything like this with my pitty. And so I was really disappointed and worried. So I’m just trying to learn everything I can and do the best I can to change this

      Yea I’m glad to know this is normal and my dog isn’t just bad. I personally have never dealt with this. My previous dog, a pitt, was tolerant to anything I did. We were really close. My lab puppy just turned 1 and has started showing signs of guarding. It can make you feel sort of sad and worried. I’m doing a lot of research and started working with it right away. Some days are good and some not so much. I’m just trying to remain patient and continue with the work. Still it’s hard not to worry about the future.

      She has never lunged but she freezes and stops eating when I go near her bowl. And she has growled and barked once. I need to do more work other than mealtimes more.
      I thought I did what I was supposed to when she was a puppy to avoid this. But it didn’t work evidently.

      To all the people here, how long did it take you guys to train the dog with this? I have a golden retriever almost 4 months old has bit me a good number of times and I had to go to the doctor yesterday because of his bite. Also, does age also play a part because maybe he is too young and will chill out with his toy as he gets older.

    • @catherines2417
      @catherines2417 2 года назад +2

      @@UtsavChaudhry it took me a solid 2 weeks to feel comfortable. Your pup is still so young and there’s time to train good habits! High reward food is key. Like turkey or cheese. You have to establish a relationship where they understand that if they give up their current toy/food then they can get something even better! Plus it helps enforce that you’re in charge without being forceful or making them fear you!

    • @betterlucktomorrow7957
      @betterlucktomorrow7957 2 года назад +1

      @@UtsavChaudhry, it took me 3 weeks. One of the things that isn’t helpful from what I noticed is that your dog can sometimes expect a reward. They don’t normally revert back to resource guarding, but they can on rare occasions. What helps is to not interrupt them when they’re eating or chewing on a bone. At least, that’s my theory. And when I say interrupt: I mean, have an area for themselves where no one can walk by or possibly brush up on them. You might have to just train them longer with this method. Then just occasionally get closer and just gauge how close you can get. They’ll give you a warning with growling but if you notice they don’t - then you should be able to move your hands closer.

    Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. I have brandon's book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq in two formats. Not only the paperback version but also the kindle version to refer to when i don't have the paperback along with me. I have used his methods with my cavalier kc spaniel and turned a non-disciplined furbaby into a companion who has traveled thousands of miles with us across the country. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.

      This is easier with a well behaved dog and one problem dog. I accomplished this by using a toy my puppy (problem dog) was guarding from my brother’s dog (well behaved). I would use treats as Zak does to get the toy from my pup. Then I would give it to my brothers dog. I kept my pup on leash to control him and had lots of treats to give him when my brothers dog had the toy. Then I had my brother dog drop it and gave the toy back to my pup. And just repeat many times for a few days. Take, treat, give to other dog, treat, give back to my pup, repeat. Having a good sit and stay is a good pre requisite and having both dogs on leash with two people is safest and highly recommended.

    My pup is resource guarding me. He's 16 wks old, he came home with a food aggression, and i did this training and I worked with him, still working, for the last 8 weeks. He's stopping the food aggression and he's been growling at my family members who are his family too. I've never had a dog with any food or resource guarding issues. This is my cane corso pup, I've got mastiff experience, I've had mastiffs my entire life. Now my daughter and family members walk down stairs and I'm in the kitchen, he growls, every time someone walks near, he's growling and today he snapped at my daughter's leg. She's 17 and she's upset, her feelings are hurt, she's done nothing but love him and work with him on his basic obedience and play with him etc etc... A family pet, and being treated as such, however, he's been getting more and more guardian, owner, aggressive with any one approaching me. I immediately tell him no, i walk to my daughter and I'm really trying to show him, she's mine, don't go there. But ive never dealt with this, again he's 16wks. I don't understand why he's behaving as such, any advice?

      It's the same premise you have to trade for a higher calue reward for the thing or human it's fixated on. You can teach your dog a 'out' command. So say there's a toy they want on the floor you can throw a higher calue treat and say out until your dog can do an out command consistently food aggression also can be resolved by handing feeding dogs

      I realise people will shout at me, but you need to correct your dog for guarding you. You need to protect your dog, not the other way around so you need to stop him from guarding you and show him you guard you (and him). You decide if an incoming human/dog/whatever is a threat or not, not your dog. He'll be a lot happier for it.

    My dog has this issue. He's exceptionally bad with it when he's tired though. I know it was mentioned in the video at 0:54 , but it's definitely something I'd love to see. Specifically in my dogs case, where he doesn't have a dog bed or anything, he just sleeps wherever and gets extremely mad if he suspects you're trying to move him from his spot or disturb him in a way he doesn't like. Can't pick him up, for example without him going bite crazy. Distracting him by pretending like you want to play and giving him a few seconds to "wake up" after he stands usually works to stop his anger.

    YES! We've been working on this exact thing with my GSD/Belgian Malinois cross with a local trainer who uses positive methods like this. Funny thing is, she rarely guards food. More often it's things like a piece of garbage she snatched out of the trash, a shoe, or her vomit when she occasionally gets sick. I'm a strong believer in positive reinforcement training as oppose to cruel shortcuts like prong or e-collars. Unlike those methods of force, positive reinforcement strengthens the bond of trust between dog and person.

    • @S6dalanna
      @S6dalanna 6 лет назад +5

      My GSD/Husky mix does the same and this training method doesnt work because she prefers the piece of garbage over any food. So the only thing that works with me is picking the dog up and talking to her like a small kid who has been slightly naughty.
      What is weird about my dog is that she only pretends to snap. Once she accidentally hit my husbands hand while snapping(he never pulled away) but she was so shocked herself that now she gives everything away to him willingly.

The more aggressive the dog is the calmer you must be to achieve a good result. Aggression against aggression just makes things worse quicker and in a very very bad way. I talk from real life experience here. I got bitten several times by my dog, he got me terrified at first, but I knew it wasn't his fault and I noticed that if I or someone else tried to yell at him to stop him when he was aggressive he would get more anxious and he was more likely to go off and bite so I tried the other way: standing still while he was growling at me, talking to him in a very low and calm voice and asked him to sit and chill before giving him a treat. He is now a sweet boy who always looks for cuddles and ways to get a treat out of everyone's pockets. 😊 So dominance is for losers.

    Although, he’s very smart, he didn’t know any dog commands. I believe he was sent back to the rescue a few times.
    So far, I taught him how to sit, down, give paw, turn around.
    He’s really quite loving , but turns vicious with resource guarding food and toys. Already got bit once. And a couple of close calls. I don’t want to give up on him being he’s been sent back so many times.
    The rescue never mentioned any of this that’s why I believe he was returned so many times.
    We had his bed and his toys in a high traffic area, and we noticed he was just nervous and resource guarding every time someone walks by .
    So we moved his bed and toys to a corner of the room, where it is quiet and no traffic.
    That seem to work for a while.
    I know he hast to trust us.

      Ash my Gsd does that with me with people, very few strangers get near me. If ppl are coming to work on the house I always muzzle her. In my eyes she's amazing, I have a disability and it wasn't until I got really bad that she started this behaviour. She did get tormented by the men and kids in my cul-de-sac when she was a pup which didn't help and I told them to stop it but they were arseholes. I keep her safe the rest is up to people give her respect. I had another 2 shepherds and she used to fight with my other girl, Mira, over me, so we got a boy, Kashmir, and the fights stopped. Mira passed away at 13 from a stroke. Unfortunately we lost Kashmir 2 years ago to epilepsy and he was only 4 so that's been tough as well. I know how stressful this can be, I'd definitely see a professional trust me you don't want to see your dogs fighting because it's horrible. It's mostly saliva and a lot of noise but it's still not a pleasant experience. Good luck hun, I've been there and it's not easy xx

      You need to give a correction to the dog. If you never tell it what not to do, how would it know otherwise? You’re the boss. In that particular situation your dog is taking the reigns because it either doesn’t trust you, or you haven’t enforced the proper behaviour. Give it a firm “no” next time and side submit. In general I would train them both at the same time. Keep the aggressive one in a cage and walk the young one by on a leash. Then give a treat to the aggressive one as long as there’s no bad behaviour. The idea is to reinforce “positive association” so that the aggressive dog associates the young dog being near to treats (ie something positive)

    My problem is that my dog doesn’t get aggressive over things that he’s allowed to have, I can take a tow away from him anytime I want. He will just find a sock, or a napkin, or something from outside, and then we can’t take it away from him without almost losing a finger

      Would luring away with a treat help? My dog will bring random things into the house from outside, and the best way to get it away from him is the old switcheroo.

      @@amandaallinson7839 yeah it did work, but he learned fast to just ignore the treat. He thankfully grew out of it/ we worked with him more and he hasn’t shown any aggressive in maybe 3 months

    My dog only does this at the park with dogs that she does not know well. Doesn't happen at daycare or at home or with dogs that she's knows for the past year. We had to stop going to the park at a point, that was really hard and I felt like I was failing. Literally cried over it. It's gotten much better over the past few months. We avoided the park, I gave her more structure when we did go (potty first, walk to laps, basic commands) I also practiced lots of "drop it" "leave it" and "waits" when we play at home. Happy to say that the resources guarding has decreased but not completely gone but she's back at the park pretty regularly now.

    Obviously dog ggression and biting are different case to case but the fact that you use positive reinforcement and no actual force almost brings tears to my eyes for joy. This keeps the dog smart and uhmarmed and it's fun to train this way. There was a video with a similar dog aggression where this was not the strategy. More force was used and the dog did actually bite the trainer. Obviously case by case difference but if I had a choice between him as a trainer for my dog and you it's gonna be you. Great job Zach ❤️

    You can’t even be this near to our dog when he’s on alert. Our other dogs are fine so I don’t know why one of our dog became protective.

    Thanx a lot
    But my dog sometimes roar while he is sleeping and when we sit near him he just tries to catch or hands and also when giving him something to eat...
    Any Idea about that?

      Yes it is never too late to teach something to a dog especially not in the first year.

      You need to build trust and slow things down, use words like gently and soft when giving treats. Get him to work for everything he gets even water, sit, wait, look at me, now get it. You'll find if you slow things down it'll make a big difference. I'm guessing he's done this behaviour as a young pup and people have laughed and teased him. Not in a nasty way but this is the out come when you don't teach your pup bite inhibition. When my shepherds were young and we were playing, the second tooth touched skin they got a loud ouch, every single time. All my dogs have had great bite inhibition. Hope this wee bit of info helps, he's still really young, last thing plenty of praise when he does get it right and don't scold when he gets it wrong. Good luck

    This is much the same process I'm working with a local behaviorist on. Force free takes Forever and there have been setbacks, but I feel the force free (Scientific) method is going to leave a lasting impression. If I survive it - it gets frustrating when there's a setback because you have to go back one or two steps until those are solid again. My 34 lb boy, Momo, has had 8 years to rehearse this behavior and he's getting grumpier as he's aging (he still plays like a puppy and has energy for days - his attitude is just going down the tubes). He's ½ Finnish Spitz, 25% Siberian Husky, 25% Spaniel mix. 100% pita when it comes to resources. High energy, über smart, totally grumpy over food, and starting to get that way about his bed. How does it go? Grant me patience . . . now (or something like that). Slow and steady wins the race with these guys.
    We skipped a lot of the steps because he already knew them (teaching wait and leave), it's just when he gains possession of something that there's an issue. I can feed him from my hand, feed him small portions at a time and keep adding to his bowl, I can put him in a 3-minute wait (I don't normally but sometimes we need to let our Slooow arthritic dog clear out of the area so he has to hold), but once something is his it's His. Zak's got the right of it here and I appreciate that he shows the setbacks - it's not all peaches and cream. Right now we're working on Mo leaving the bowl once he takes possession and it's no cake walk.

    So glad to see this. My Aussie is the sweetest animal alive, and she turns into such an A-hole about resource guarding sometimes despite the fact that I tried to train her out of it early. Not so much with me, but other dogs-yikes. She snaps at me when I want her to move after she’s stolen my spot on the bed. 🙄
