Hi Rooster , I have been trying to research information about the HSR 42 , I just recently bought my second softail deuce, 2003,
And I thought I knew everything about setting the carbs and problems , as I have been riding for well over 60 years, I’m an old dude.
The bike is spitting back through the carburettor , So it to me, it is running very lean, So before I done any other investigation, I took the carb off, stripped it, purchased a rebuild kit, and put it all back together, I forgot to mention, I believe the fuel and been left in it for nearly a year as there was a lot of sediment in the bottom of the bowl, I cleaned it very well, I started it. It seem to be running fine on choke, and it then started spitting back through Carb , I’ve taken the plugs out, and they completely covered in black suit. Nobody have been in and changed them for quite awhile., makes me wonder whether it is shorting out inside, what’s your opinion please be very much appreciated, try to find peoples comments, with similar issue, from old dude,

      Thanks for watching, much appreciated.
I’m probably not the best person to ask for advice, as I’m just a dip shit in a shed. My twincam with the HSR asn’t give me any bother but my Evo HSR has.
I thought the same as yourself, that she was running lean and I was going to lift the float needle a little, but when I checked the spark plugs, she didn’t seem to be running rich or lean so I just reseated the air & fuel screw, adjusting the pump lever to the distance as per manual (they were all out a little as per manual recommendation). Bike is now running a lot better but will still black fire the odd morning after she has sat a few days. This morning she backfire once or twice in the first mile, then was fine the rest of the day.
      Hope that helps

@@_Rooster Hi 👋, This my fourth, Harley, And all of them, I have changed the carburettor, mainly to give better throttle response and a bit more power, I’ve had sportster, FXR, Softail Deuce, and now on my second softail deuce, I did try a Edelbrock Qwiksilver 38 on my FXR,
I think HSR IS a slightly better, and should be easy to set up, Deuce I purchased a month ago, got no service history with it, and also don’t know how it’s been looked after, going by. I’ve taken the seat off and so much dirt and grime under the seat., I don’t think the bike has been very well looked after, The float settings were weigh out, The air mixture screw was nearly 3 turns out, And the cab is telling me one thing, on the plugs are definitely telling me that it is running too rich, So a bit more investigation is definitely required, bike is still in the UK and I’m over in France, I’m waiting for paperwork, Hopefully in the next month or so I’ll get it sorted, ride safe,

Good morning 🌅, Rooster, I hope you are keeping safe and well, round the other side, My Deuce is now running great, inlet manifold was leaking, someone had put cheep jets in the carb , so I have all new jets and gaskets in HSR 42 , I have since found out that it’s got a big bore kit on it , 1550 , An S & S g510 cam, I purchased the bike about three months ago thinking that it was a cheap buy, i’ve ended up spending a lot of money on it. I’ve rebuilt the primary site including the main bearing on the output shaft of the gearbox I’ve rated it to a Jim’s larger bearing that replaces the sleeve that is very hard to get off the main shaft, Put a new drive poly sprocket on the gearbox for the driver belt and replace the belt, the belt was completely shot, and I believe the belt was running too tight, as the teeth on the sprocket were hooked,
Going back to your problems part the problem could be the exhaust , as I have always found the bike to be stifled slightly with dual pipes, It’s obviously your preference On looks, but a tune into one system is always better, actually give you some more power and the bike should run a lot better as well, not sure whether I’ve mentioned, but I purchased the bike from the UK, and imported it into France where are now living, I had problems getting a conformity ticket, that’s now sorted, then it had to go for a control techniques inspection, it sailed through that no problems at all, and it appears that this year was the first time that motorcycles had to have inspection very strange, and the inspection last for three years, so I’ve now submitted all my paperwork to the authorities to register the bike in France, hopefully they will be through in the next week or so, I am still allowed to ride the bike, Hopefully later today I will be doing, I just noticed in one of your other videos that you’ve got yourself a air operated lift. I’ve been looking at one of these a week or so ago., might be good for me to get one for the future, I wish I had something that I could turn the bike round when it’s inside my building, as I drive it off the road into my basement and gives me problems trying to turn it around when I want to come out, specially being a old dude, I might have to go back to the gym, 😂, I’ll find a good young lady to help me build my body back up, 😂, stay safe ride free.
