I agree, German transplant. Now living in TN. My favorite meals are chicken fried steak or chicken (white gravy), chicken and dumplings, the slick kind. And of course, biscuits and gravy.
I do love greens, but I like to add vinegar or Louisiana hot sauce. Also, fried fish and fried chicken need some hot sauce as well.

Hey Phil! I live in Savannah, Georgia (you're Southern neighbor). Cobblers (especially peach) are made with comforting and warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, etc. Although I agree a piece of peach cobbler would be delicious cold, there are few things on this Earth that are as heart warming as a freshly baked warm piece of peach cobbler. I hope you get to try that with a scoop of vanilla ice cream; truly something you will never forget. Hope you enjoy your stay here in the South! Come visit Savannah (the hostest city) soon!

Chicken and waffles has become a dish eaten in the South due to its connection with Soul Food, but it did not originate in the American South.
The earliest version of the American chicken and waffle combo traces back to the Pennsylvania Dutch in the 1600s, where waffles were served with pulled chicken and gravy.
The version we know today emerged much later with the opening of Wells Supper Club, a soul food restaurant in Harlem, New York, in 1938.

You have to try it dusted in a corn meal breading (called fish fry), and fried in the pan with a bit of oil. The breading is thin and a bit crunchy. Very flavorful. My MIL used to make it like that.

So guys, okra is a vegetable brought over from Africa by the slaves. It's popular in my wife's country, Brazil too with the same origin. There they make it with chicken in big one pot meal. They slice it in thin rings & fry which defeats the slime. Turnips are a root vegetable similar to yucca or yams. The greens are the top leafy part, very delish, similar to collard greens. Keep on traveling and trying. 👍

Growing up in Mississippi, we would have salt ham, blackeyed peas, homemade cream corn, and butter beans or snap beans for supper along with cornbread. For desert that night or for leftovers in the morning, my Mom would split open a big piece of cornbread and slather both sides with butter then smother in some strong molasses. We at it for desert after a meal and certainly would eat it for breakfast in the morning. So good.

Heavy breakfast foods like biscuits and gravy make much more sense when you remember that for much of American history we were largely a rural, agricultural society. This is the type of food you want to eat before you go work out in the fields for a full day, knowing you won't eat hot food again until dinner time. Obesity and heart disease are not big issues with that type of lifestyle, staying fuelled is. Of course, now that the average American works indoors at a desk, we have an obesity epidemic. I'm sure we'll figure out how to make diet gravy eventually😂

My haunt here in Charlotte is Eddie's Place, which usually does a banger of a brunch over the weekend. Before it went on the breakfast-all-day menu, the bartender, Ben, handed me that weekend's specials and chicken & waffles was on it. He raved about it, especially the antique waffle iron used to make the deep-crevasse waffles, but also the pecan-crusted fried chicken breast. Served with cinnamon butter and syrup.
I'm not a sweet breakfast guy, so when he came back to take my order I asked for a few changes: hold the butter and syrup, and instead top with to poached-easy eggs. His eyes went wide and - after about a 3-second pause - he said, "That...sounds...AWESOME!!" The young lady sitting next to me looked at me and said, "I just ordered the special, and I wish I had thought of that!" The runny yolks did their job on the chicken and waffle craters - delicious.
They also do a country-fried steak every now and then: a breakfast-sliced ribeye battered and fried, with two eggs any style, home fries and a biscuit.
I make it a habit to NEVER look at caloric information.
FYI: Okra is part of the hibiscus family. I eat fried okra like popcorn. Cornbread is best with a little tap of cayenne pepper in the batter, and the crispier (cast iron) the better in my opinion. But to each their own.

I am SO glad y'all noticed that that chicken was undercooked. That was the first thing I noticed and I got worried. That said, I'm going to have to try that combination. I normally keep it to just biscuits and sausage gravy, but that looked good. I think an over easy egg might be the way to go though. Maybe even sunny side up.
    Damn. I'm hungry now.
Also, damn. He's got a really good vocabulary for someone who has English as a second language. I know tons and TONS of Americans who don't have this command of the language. I salute you, Sir.
That mac and cheese looks gross. Turnip greens are ten times better than collards. I love fried okra, but that stuff is frozen. You need to try some fresh. Oh, peach cobbler. You need some vanilla ice cream on it. That banana puddin' looked good. You need to feed him some good pecan pie and some haystacks. Also find some Waldolf salad.
    Cute video.

Historically the loaded biscuits meal would be used by the workers that did a lot of manual labor and that would burn off the calories.Over time they forgot about the working part. The chicken and waffles were favorites of the club workers and the over night shift. They were like the concept of brunch but for dinner and breakfast.

Fun fact: You CAN find box macaroni and cheese in Germany--just not easily. For instance, you can often find it at Kaufland, and Penny carries it seasonally. Granted, what you can buy in Germany is not as good as macaroni and cheese by Annie's or even Kraft!

To be honest, to get the base idea for somebody who’s never had it, Cracker Barrel would be best. I understand going for “gourmet” versions, but this food ain’t supposed to be fancy. Biscuits and gravy (sausage gravy), chicken fried steak, and just stuff like bacon and eggs. Then you need BBQ, which is more of a delicacy. And fried chicken, but that’s basically the same no matter where you get it. Sweet Tea. Lemonade. Heck, go to Chick-Fil-A.
The fried pork, and steak, should be familiar to him because it’s basically Wiener Schnitzel.

It is a good thing that you cut the biscuit sandwich to see the chicken needed to be cooked more. The large amount of calories for that dish at first is frightening but when you think about which meal should be the one with the highest, breakfast makes sense. Can you imagine eating that many calories late at night? Can't wait to see more

just found your channel. Have you been to Texas? Lots of Germany influence here. Chicken Fried Steak is schnitzel, but with Beef. We have sausages, potato salads, etc that is heavily influenced by Germans. Fredericksburg was settled by Germans, and I believe many people there still speak German. Another town that comes to mind is Shiner, TX. The Spoetzel Brewery was started by a German. Shiner Bock is the main beer. They have other beers there that have some sort of German roots.
