    1: Linen shirts start out grey or yellowy-beige, but become whiter as they are washed with harsh lye soap then left spread out in the sun to dry - a new white linen shirt is King level stuff because the material had to be bleached with urine, soap and sun repeatedly to get really white. I've seen King Charles I's shirt that he wore when he was executed and is is about the color of modern unbleached calico. 2: On the coat, consider adding slightly flared soft leather cuffs (Brandenburg cuffs) which can be folded back and held with a button (or several) or left down covering the wrists & mittens, protecting them from wear, wet and windy weather. 3: Some Celtic swords had hilts with the pommel and cross guard curving away from the grip - )===(=============> 4: You could consider a small-ish buckler to go with a single handed sword, they are not that difficult to make, there are plenty of surviving examples (or parts of) that were made from layers of leather (you can do leatherwork), a few metal parts and lots of nails/rivets - even a shield boss can be made from leather segments laced or riveted together then wet moulded. See Royal Armouries I.33 fencing manual c. 1270-1320.

    I think you definitly could play Brand and be an heir of Bard the dragonslayer. It would be perfect to see you in this role if there would be a movie about the war in the north!
    But why don't you go out, get some friends and make a little fan film about it? Maybe it is to difficult with the huge battle, but as I said, I would just love to see you in that role.

    I've always been enamored with Bardings/Dale, they never get enough love. Beyond the northern themes, it also allows you to lean slightly more into fantasy elements by incorporating nods to their friendship with the Dwarves of Erebor. Of course that's easy to overdo, but the sword like you have and possibly some Dwarven trinkets would be fun to include! Great work as always.

    • @LivingAnachronism
      @LivingAnachronism  Год назад +5

      I originally liked Dale because of how close they are with the Dwarves, and the dwarves are also really cool (and underrated perhaps) and my persona was a Barding so I could take some influence from them without having to play a Dwarf. I don't think I would make a good dwarf without some serious prosthetics

    Yeah, you totally could be Luke Evans' grandson. You even have the exact same widow's peak lol. I think that this outfit is hitting the exact vibe you want: Bard in the the Hobbit, but slightly nicer. This man is a prince, and one who has considerable wealth: but he's humble and deliberately evoking his grandfather's aesthetic. The slightly longer hair, the full fur lining on the coat, the red-dyed belt and the more finely woven tunic: these are all very subtle flexes, things that are expensive but not flashy. In a similar vein you might consider a black velvet for the gusset on your coat (which will also breathe easier than the fur lining and get less stinky), as a subtle nod to the alliance between Dale and Mirkwood.
    For covering the laces on your boots, I would suggest English-style equestrian boot covers. They button up the outside, looking like 18th Century boots. Get the knee length kind, to make your pants look more voluminous and more like breeches rather than trousers. No need to match your boots, these are the nicer version of Bard's leg-wraps. Plus, multicolored footwear is a nod to the period when the book was written when saddle shoes were all the rage: a clearly deliberate anachronism intended to make this a fantasy outfit.

  • @khodexus4963
    @khodexus4963 Год назад +6

    One thing that's occurred to me when considering the more realistic adventurer, is that it might behoove adventurers to not really adventure in colder climates during winter. Historically, armies tended to shelter in place and not go to war during the winter, though the occasional winter sneak attack could be quite effective, if risky. And of course, there are medieval fantasy stories where the adventurer protagonists similarly 'winter' in place and only resume their adventures in the spring, or when circumstances force them to. Dragonlance, comes to mind, where they waited out the coldest of the winter months before resuming their journey. As an example.

    • @LivingAnachronism
      @LivingAnachronism  Год назад +2

      True. Though inevitably I will end up filming outside over the winter, unless it is too bitter to withstand. I love the colder months!

    • @khodexus4963
      @khodexus4963 Год назад +1

      @@LivingAnachronism I do too. And I bet a good costume makes them that much more fun. Sadly, winters here in California aren't nearly as fun as where I grew up in Northern Utah. But such is life. Still, if nothing else, pausing adventures or at least slowing them down is an interesting consideration for writing and role-playing.

    • @elenoryn4700
      @elenoryn4700 Год назад

      Lord of the Rings points that out as well. They do start the journey from Rivendell in December, but only because they had no other choice and were in a hurry. So you can see there that adventuring in the winter is not what you would do under normal circumstances. What happens to the fellowship on Caradhras proves that point even more.
      The Bardings on the other side are living in the north and might be used to the rough climate way better ...

  • @andreajim1000
    @andreajim1000 Месяц назад

    You absolutely could be Bard’s grandson! Also, there’s a brand of riding boots called Mountain Horse that does winter boots that are lined. Some of their boots are traditional (except for zippers) riding boots but others fit looser and have a rubber sole. Those are great to walk in even all day.

    Good morning heir Brand- for your coat may I recommend adding a fur cuff rather than letting out the hem? Since you mentioned the fur lining it makes more sense the fur would be extended to the cuffs and maybe a collar to hide the zipper removal. It would give a richer look but still keep to the roots of your grandfather.

      Luckily the coat is made so the zipper seam is hidden under a strip of leather, so once I take it off and sew it back up, it will be like it was never there. Adding cuffs is a much better idea than letting out a half inch of the sleeve!

    • @lynnm6413
      @lynnm6413 Год назад +2

      @@LivingAnachronism if you made the cuffs removable you could also cut your sleeves a few inches on the outside of your arm and add some leather laces so you can wear your bracers when shooting the bow…
      About the shoulders..instead of adding gussets if you trust your needlework you could cut the sleeves off at the seam, add holes along both sides and lace them together again - it would create more shoulder room while also giving the coat a medieval touch…Aragorns leather coat in the Fellowship has this detail and I like it…maybe add a lighter leather underneath to add contrast so it shows off better on camera…

      Don't feel the need to create something new when costuming. Oft times when you have older pieces you can reuse and reorganize a character. This has been a focus of many of Kramer's videos. Recreate something from a film then make your own additions. Then, change one piece, or two. Recreation can spark creativity just as fast if not faster than toiling over something original.

Also on your jacket, you might want to consider adding fabric cuffs. A friend did like you and found a coat while thrifting and it fit him well except for the sleeve length. What he did was to add rolled woolen cuffs to the end of the sleeves and attach them with buttons, 3 of them if I am remembering correctly, so he could wash them separately from his coat. He also made extra cuffs from different materials and colors. His Cos-Play/LARP was Firefly, and they have the rolled up sleeves with the red at the end of the sleeves.

    for the coat, what if you removed the sleeves and laced them in, like Aragorn's? That would buy you some shoulder room. Get some dark fur or fake fur that matches the collar (if you're keeping the collar) and make deep cuffs that cover your wrists. Consider leather gaiters to go over the boots.
    I spotted the similarity to Bard's sword right away. You could easily be Bard's grandson, maybe you take after your mother's looks!

    • @LivingAnachronism
      @LivingAnachronism  Год назад

      I don't really want to detach the sleeves unless I have to, because it is such a nice coat for regular everyday where too, but if it comes down to it that is a good idea. Definitely keeping the collar, detachable cuffs seems like the way for sure.
      I believe neither Bain or Brand's mothers are mentioned, so not to go down the dark path of editing Tolkien, but I think there's some believable leeway for me. Especially given Dale/Erebor being situated quite far east and being a trade center, there is a plausible in world explanation for my visage.

I feel your pain with the bow, I've spent heck knows how many hours shaping at least 4 shortish 4-5 foot bows only to go a bit thin in one area and then it *censored* snapping when I get to testing the limbs. But my latest bow, a less conservative length of about 6 foot with a 40-45ish pound draw, has turned out pretty good, it's launched several dozen arrows with no noticeable damage. I really want a short bow though, I have some 5 foot blanks for when i have a few days to play. Fun fact, I grew up the opposite side of the valley from where Luke is from.

    6:08 I seem to recall having said that the knit fabric doesn't really say ranger to me, however for a Lake-town inspired costume the aesthetic is slightly different, the costume designers did use knit, and I think this works better, for this garb please don't change them for leather, but perhaps a brown would work better tan green?
    8:48 yes, that sword is right, purely because it looks like it could be dwarven, good choice

    • @LivingAnachronism

      The problem with the knitted gloves is that they make archery supremely difficult , as the knocks of my arrows constantly catch in them. Perhaps I need a more finely woven pair instead. Just something to consider--looking at costumes, one thing that strongly draws the eye and doesn't fit with a non-industrial society is metal grommets, especially bright shiny silver ones. Lacing holes for exterior clothing were always hand bound even after metal grommets did become available, and actually will last longer than the clamp-on metal grommets. If you have to use them, you might try black or brown so as to mute the jarring visual note that keeps pulling the eye back to them even if you can't figure out quite what is disturbing.

    Sadly latex and polyfoam only have about a ten year lifespan and then it dry rots away. You could glue the sword back together and then make a silicone and fiberglass matrix mold off of it. Then you can cast more copies. You can also use urethane for the sword skin instead of latex. It'll last longer but the poly foam inside will still breakdown. But you'd have a mold and can cast more. 🤷🏻‍♂ Monster makers has all you'd need on their website.

  • @RainMakeR_Workshop
    @RainMakeR_Workshop Год назад

    I think the sword and the belt clash. Both work with the costume individually, but together the belt is too knightly for the sword (its mostly the buckle) and the sword looks to viking for the belt. I think you either need a more simple viking type of belt, or a more knightly type of sword. Something like a Norman arming sword would work.
    Though as you pointed out that sword does tie in with the LOTR sword. So maybe a simpler belt would be the better choice.
