  • Does a modern EDC compare to a medieval one? Does a medieval mindset help in the modern day?
I am traveling for Independence Day, and since I am not taking any garb with me, I thought about how my kit has a very heavy influence on my EDC already, and wanted to share my thoughts.

dudee your mention about your ranger mindset and using romanticized views of the past to better oneself is spot on and i wish more people understood it. these days people seem to quick to dismiss any sort of romanization for fear of seeming childish or naive or it seems. As one who grew up inspired by these romanticized notions of history, i will continue to let them inspire me while the rest of the "adult" world struggles with their lack of role models.

A couple years ago I started wearing a leather belt pouch to carry my wallet, cell phone, keys, etc. I love it! I wear it every time I leave the house and doubt I will ever go back to carrying stuff in my pockets. My pouch is probably not accurate for the medieval period, but is a great way to carry the stuff you need close at hand. I'm a professional leatherworker and started offering these things for sale in my shop. A number of my customers have remarked at how practical a belt pouch can be.

The most important part of EDC can't be legislated away from you. It can be used by old or young, weak or strong, male or female. It worked in medieval times, it works now, and it works in fantasy.
    Situational awareness.
Just being aware of your surroundings, being able to spot potential dangers (human and other), can get you very, very far.

    • @Tennouseijin

      Situational awareness is best self-defense.

Also I'm glad I'm not the only one who has compared modern pistols to swords 😅 I literally was asked at work once why I would bother to carry a pistol and my response was "because I'd get weird looks if I had a sword on my hip" 😅

My daily wardrobe is inspired by the 1890s-1910s but similar principals apply. I wear long skirts, white blouses with frills, and jackets all day everyday. During summer months and also with garden work, I'm more into medieval-ish peasant aesthetic because of it's practically, down to the local wooden shoes. It started as cosplays at renfairs, but over time I started introducing more and more pieces into my daily wardrobe (though admittedly that's harder to do with medieval gear, which is so different). Funny thing is that you don't need actual historical reproductions to achieve the style. Modern blouses and jackets pair very well witb any long skirt, and details like a broach on the collar, a straw hat and leather shoes create the illusion of history (plus side, when taken good care of leather shoes last way longer than any polyester shoe, saves money in tbe long run). For blouses I tend to go for natural fibers, because they breathe.
Jeans are practical and all that, but somehow modern clothing just cannot compare to the elegance of tbe fashions of ages past.

In medieval times, the sword identified the wielder as a member of the Nobility. The "lesser" peasants might be permitted a large knife, such as your seax, at the judgement of the local Lord, but never a proper sword.
In the United States our Constitution is clear (if you bother to read it) that such legal distinctions between classes shall not exist. Yet we continue to have "laws" which permit some classes to possess arms forbidden to the ordinary man.

What you said about the romanticizing of the historic examples making you a better person is more important than the possible reality: I was a Army PYOPS. We were discussing the nature of stories and themes on people. I pointed out to them that a battle lord/king in the 600's had fought and repelled the invaders. Not much else was known for sure but the Legends of King Arthur's court, the ideas of Might for Right, the notions of chivalry, all these things shaped peoples minds giving us the Magna Carta of England, even helped form some of the ideas in our Constitution and eventually resulted in the Geneva Convention that guides nations conduct. Who know exactly what a man named Arthur did all those centuries ago but he did something that inspired the world to try and be better.

While I mostly wear steel toed work boots, I also wear flip flops and beach shoes. My favorite tho are old chuck taylor converse. Canvass uppers and a flat piece of rubber. Best kicking shoes next to cowboy boots. Cowboy boots on someone with decent kicking skills are weapons into them selves. Also known to carry a nineteen inch kukri and a dagger under my shirt. Along with a pistol. I trust blades more than guns. When traveling I keep a katana or wakazashi handy. Had a dude ask me why. Told him for self defense, he said I carry a gun. I told him, I do too. But in a hotel where there are people over under and around you, if you miss and shoot someone in the next room, you still go to jail for murder. Once the bullet leaves the end of the gun, your no longer in control of what it does. Not so with a bladed or blunt weapon. Love this channel.

I usually have some form of para-cord around one if not, both wrists and it protected me multiple times to the point of not getting bruises; It's really good to have for on the spot MacGyver fixes from styling up hair and clothing patch jobs, to tieing/knoting together a mace or other wepons and weaving a sling for an injury in the wild.
I've been getting nick names because of the different things that are based off of different kind of preparation, Star Wars, and midieval clothing I wear like, Jumanji/Ruby Roundhouse, Tomb Rader/Lara Croft, and Legolas's sister, I've also been told that I look like someone from Galaxy's Edge and Evermore park. As a person particularly interested in the Sengoku-jidai period of Japanese history, the samurai, ninja etc. I try to find ways I could incorporate elements of their culture into my everyday life. As far as mindset and activities go, meditation and archery are a good start. Not quite kyudo, but an attempt to practice kyudo mindset with modern equipment. Yay anachronism.
As far as clothing goes, I find zori footwear to be quite comfortable, and it's what I wear at home all year round. Shitagi makes for a great undershirt. The hakama pants however... are far less practical and I would not want to wear them everyday. At home I rather wear sweatpants, preferably ones that have this 'kung fu' Bruce Lee vibe. Black. Baggy, but tight around ankles. Just wearing them makes you want to punch air at random, and make wushu poses when no-one is looking xD
Outside - cargo pants. Always cargo pants. All glory to the cargo pants.
Also, I'm not a big fan of sneakers. Cheap ones fall apart quickly. Expensive ones... at that price point, I might as well buy something that actually looks good.

      1. Get two long wide scarves, sew a long edge on each to the other, half way up. Done!
      2. Get a wool blanket or similar, cut a slit from the middle of one side straight to the center, sew around the cut edges so it won't unravel. Done!

For myself, I don't do any sort of LARP or reenactment (but my parents used to do america Civil War reenactment so I grew up camping), I do still like the mindset. For myself, I wear cargo pants daily so that I can take my EDC without dealing with outer packs or pouches. Here in Canada you can carry any knife (or sword!) regardless of length *so long as it's intended as a tool and the intent for carry is not to cause harm*. So.. Technically that sort of removes swords as they dont really serve a use besides causing harm, but hey, technicality.
However my EDC is my water bottle that clips to either my belt loop or a built-in hook on most of my pants, my folding knife, a pen, my Buff (gaitor for americans maybe idk?) for hot weather to pour water on and put around my neck, my phone, wallet, and keys. They each get their own pocket, and the knife hooks onto a front belt loop. I'm honestly really happy with it.

Hi, it's me the mild idiot now following you again but if bushcraft is a thing you are into I recommend learning flint and steel it is the most satisfying way to make fire. Furs and wool make the best short-term shelter. Tracking and hunting is crucial for anything long term and has multiple applications. Water collection and purification is super fun to learn and clutch for life lol. Long-term shelters and how to properly make them is what I am showing my kids now and has been epic so far. learning how to smoke meat without modern equipment is a challenge that ends up being the most rewarding for me at least. fashion your own tools if possible. Bushcraft is super fun and rewarding.

This concept can be used in a positive way when you are aware of it. Like playing a confident character to become more confident irl. But it can also cause problems if you are unaware

Messers weren't carried in germanic countries because swords were illegal, but because the knife makers guilds were able to bypass the sword makers guilds control over the sword market by hilting them like knives. Many of the blades were imported anyways, afterall.

As an electrician I always have a knife on me all day to strip cables and generally knife things. But it’s my tool not what people would think of when people hear EDC as that screams American Preper looking for a reason to have a weapon over here

Yeah I get you, it's that way in most cities here too, unless it's for work, you might get questioned. And state land here too, you can't technically bring anything, even for film (like a bow) without a hunting license. Varies from state to state though.

I am enjoying your videos, but since you asked….😉… Tolkien and medieval era men in general don’t actually have a concept of stoicism as masculine. Look at Tolkien’s treatment of Aragorn at the death of Boromir. Or at Sam’s love of Frodo, at the closeness of Merry and Pippin or the scholarly nature of Faramir. Of course the elves as well are quite emotive. Medieval? One has only to look at stories of knights weeping at the death of a friend or pining in desperate longing for the unattainable lady! Emotional suppression really doesn’t come into English culture until the 1800s. Later in other cultures, earlier in a few. I would encourage you to really look at Tolkien’s treatment of male characters. Rarely is emotion suppressed. It is accepted as good and necessary, and I believe it’s clear he based that (as other things) on the ideal medieval knight. Cheers my friend, keep up the wonderful videos!

The law definitely gets weird and carried away in regards to self defense. I'm personally anti-gun, but not fully politically, if that makes sense. I don't like guns and don't like being around them. But I understand people are interested in their self defense, and also use them for hobbies like hunting. I think there should however be any and all worthwhile steps made towards keeping them out of the hands of those who wish to hurt themselves or others, even if that costs us a little bit of that freedom. But that's just my opinion.

I'm pretty sure the sentiment is more a contrast between being a man vs being a boy rather than being more many and less femanine.
Aka growing up, being more mature and responsible. In the same way people talk about "adulting".
As men however, a lot of us look up to particular men in our lives and want to emulate them. We associate their possitive traits with masculinity but i don't think many people think they are exclusively masuline or that women shouldn't pursue them.
In the same way traits like empathy and gentleness are often spoken of as femanine traits but should ideals for everyone.

Not going to lie this one kind of lost me a bit. It started off with a strong premise and great video of your modern vs medieval kit, but like halfway through just turns into an almost defensive rambling rant about what is appropriate to carry for self defense. And then the repeating and pacing honestly kind of seems like the drugs kicked in while filming.

I'm really disappointed to hear you parrot the "guns are good for self defense" argument. The data DOES NOT support this. In fact, guns make you less safe, and not just because of accidents and suicide. A study of people who were mugged compared those with no gun, who had a gun but didn't pull it, and who had a gun and did pull it. Those with no gun were LEAST likely to be injured, and those who pulled their guns were MOST likely to be injured. Guns always escalate a violent situation. By all means, carry a knife, learn some martial arts, but don't convince yourself that a gun is equivalent, or a shortcut to training.
