  • This is a first person perspective going through a mud run in Wainuiomata, Mostly all the obstacles and trail out in Wellington, New Zealand.
After a leg injury earlier last year just after receiving my bjj purple belt I went through some rehab. Around about the same time there was more strict lock downs, my career was moving more closer to what I wanted to do as a vfx artist. I found that my martial arts had slowly been put back on the back burner. It's something I want to maintain, but at the same time there were other things in life I needed to take care of first, and new things I wanted to try. I found myself picking up surfing, and with it, it brought a different mindset. I was not as anxious or competitive when it came to being out there in the water, unlike when I was doing bjj. It was more just a challenge to myself on a task, rather than trying to dominate or survive against another person in the gym.
I still felt like I wanted to take on challenges somehow this year. Something that could take my mind off of the issues I had in my personal life, and in my professional life. I set a goal to run this Mud Run. 6km. It was inspired by seeing Tom Hardy at age 43 do one earlier on this year lol.
In hindsight I'd underestimated how difficult this was going to be, and only doing 3km run a week, with a kettlebell circuit on the weekend for prep wasn't really enough to get any where close to a placing, and wasn't really that well prepared for it to go for 6km. I still gave it my best thou, the goal wasn't to win or get a placing, it was to know I could push myself physically and mentally to complete a task.
