DK country music has aged like wine. This particular song only gets better each time you listen to it imo, it's one of those I can put on repeat for hours while I'm doing other things, it's very meditative
I think I remember hearing a fun fact about this song too that this song was like some kind of miracle for the hardware. Like the Super Nintendo and its cartridges should not have been able to produce these sounds but they got it to work somehow. Neat stuff! Love this song. Love the vid!
David Wise is an amazing composer and as the years went on his work stood out more and more. His contributions were special in a way that people didnt even try to imitate.
This song was David Wise's favourite composition for 20 years, only surpassed by Seashore War from the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze soundtrack in 2014. Yes, this year is the 30th anniversary of the first Donkey Kong Country game and the 10th anniversary of the newest, time certainly flies.
It’s so cool how our memories can work with music. I remember so little from being that young…but I can remember everything around me when I first played this stage and heard this song.
3:23 - "I wonder if David Wise is a fan of Phil Collins?" 100% he is, Collins' influence is all over the DKC1-2 OST. ruclips.net/video/YEjoz9egJDs/видео.html
I can't believe you hadn't heard this before! I saw your post asking for water music suggestions and obviously this was my first thought but I didnt even bother suggesting it because I was like "it's a no brainer, it'll already be in the video". Also gotta say the Queens blood music is such a jam. Makes me smile every time it kicks in and makes me want to play! Although I gotta admit sometimes it distracts me from what's being spoke about cause it's too catchy haha.
Not necessary for reactions but I thought I should mention that Jammin' Sam Miller has recreated many Super Nintendo game songs using the original samples to have a version without the limitations of the old sound chips. He has even gotten in contact with the composers in many cases to make things as accurate as possible. As always your reactions make my days better and I wanted to say thanks for putting these out there!
I was always a pc guy never a nintendo guy either. And yet I was hearing these games from friends who did have a super nintendo in the 90s. I mostly saw them and played them just a little as a youngling in their houses from time to time but never enough to satisfy my curiosity. And only managed to finally enjoy them fully later, as an adult, even with emulation. It didn't diminish any part of their quality, nor how amazing the co-op experience was, even 10 and 20+ years later. They were simply a creative unbelievable vibe from start to finish. A soothing, relaxing vibe, with every amazing track blending the perfect sounds of nature, an air of mystery and yet the feeling of wanting to go on a carefree adventure. Few osts ever encapsulate those feelings as perfectly as these games ! And sharing this great adventure with a friend... or a brother/sister !
Coming from the Nintendo corner, I can only think of one other aquatic theme that might have that much talk, when it comes to underwater themes: Dire Dire Docks (Mario 64). Not as melancholic but absolutely brimfilled with memories for many people, especially since it was one of the first major steps into 3D games. Different vibe but works as well. Anyways let's talk about Aquatic Ambience. What an awesome piece of music. It's the perfect tune to just shut of for a bit and flow. A fan favorite that has been used for like 5 Arrangements in the newest game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014. Yeah, DK fans have been waiting for a while now). David Wise is mostly known for DK or generally Rare games, but I can definetly also recommand his works in the Yooka-Laylee series made by Playtonic Games, which I know is basicly recollected Rare but still it hits different^^'
The entire of the DKC 1 and 2 soundtracks are incredible! So different to anything else at the time too, easily my favourite game soundtracks! Check out the Diddy Kong Racing soundtrack for a more upbeat David Wise style too!
I dip in and out of DKC semi regularly over the years and this song still brings such a mix of nostalgia and calm. The calm is probably a good for some of the later water levels haha.
One thing to consider is that the SNES hardware wasn't built to do frequency sweeps like that. So David Wise, the composer, had to do a whole bunch of programming tricks just to get it to work.
It's fun watching someone who didn't play these games/hear the music when they are new, i'm excited FOR you like oh man, it'd be so cool to experience that for the first time again. So glad you've been having a good time with these.
Yay one of my all time favorites ! cheers !!! DKC 1 is still the GOAT for me, the soundtrack is kinda insane from start to finish ! One of the best experiences to have with a friend on co-op!
oh, for the title, pretty much all the DKC tracks (and levels) have alliterative names, so "aquatic ambiance" doesn't sound so much like a placeholder in context
Yes! Finally you react to one of the best pieces of ambient music in gaming ever! Been binging your content for quite a while now and was waiting for this 😁
4 games that extremely nostalgic in terms of music to me: Super Mario World, DKC2, Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 (Including the Remake Projects, and i think they have done an excellent job there. )
This is one of those songs that seems like it's overrated, but then you listen to it (sometimes again) and realise that no, it's rated exactly as it should be. Aquatic themes aspire to be as fitting as this song. It pretty much set the precedent for what aquatic themes should be. Obviously, it's been a hot minute since DKC, and we've gotten plenty of other themes and even games entirely revolving around being underwater, but I can almost guarantee you, that this game and this song is under all those game dev's belts.
The sounds are evoking the idea of submarine radar and echolocation, with echoing sounds, and the claustrophobia of being submerged in a metal can exploring the unknown... With a mix feeling of wonder and fear.
This isn't a request for this channel, rather just something I'm suggesting you do on your own time- I think it's worth checking out the Gameboy Color version of Aquatic Ambience. It's the same song but on hardware that can't make the synths happen, so it has a pretty unique sound to it. So while it's not so different that I think a full reaction is worth it, it is different enough that it's worth giving a listen.
I literally have a playlist of different versions of this song. Also Stickerbush and alot of it's versions. Nice relaxing musis for naps or just to vibe to. 😌 I remember getting the SNES and Donkey Kong was one of the first games we got on it. I use to just sit at the water stage and just let the music play.
The timing of this video is perfect for me since I am currently playing this game for the first time. This song stopped me in my tracks. The whole OST is really amazing. I had no idea.
Playing this game as a kid was mesmerising. In an era of console games that often had janky graphics, bright colours and sounds, this game switched up the tone so uniquely. Slapstick humour and goofy characters were set against a backdrop of dark and moody pre-rendered atmospheres in level design and often wistful, ethereal tunes. You knew then it wasn't quite scary, but it had this strangely haunting and lonely melancholic maturity about it that came totally out of left field when compared with Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island, etc. The nostalgia of remembering sitting up of an evening tucked up with your CRT TV just getting sucked into the experience...so good.
It’s amazing the sound he was able to achieve on the SNES David Wise has strong 80’s influences I think he’s mentioned it somewhere. Phil Collins, Depeche Mode, and Vangelis, to name a few seem likely.
I heard this song for the first time playing Donkey Kong Land on the original Game Boy. Even back then as a dumb little kid, something about this song kept me coming back.
Not sure what the go is for suggesting music for these VGM vibes songs, but for aquatic themes I’d highly suggest Sea Bottom Segue from Sonic Lost World
Aquatic VGMs from the top of my head I can recommend: Lower Maridia - Super Metroid Dangerous Reef - Megaman X2 - Bubble Crab Stage (And Megaman X5 - Duff McWhalen/Tidal Whale Stage for an updated version)
Do I hear Queen's Blood in the background? As long as you're listening to Nintendo/DK water themes, you might want to check out Funky Waters (Amiss Abyss) from DKC Tropical Freeze. It feels like a kind of successor to Aquatic Ambience, and is also David Wise.
Yeah, this song and Dire Dire Docks from Mario 64 are like core memory stuff for me, sitting on the floor too close to a bulky CRT TV while playing video games as a child.
There is a version where they combined aquatic ambience with the soundfont from mario 64. It sounds amazing. The best version is with the soundfont of twilight princess
feels weird that you didn’t react to this yet oh and speaking on it, it’s super likely that David Wise is a fan of Phil Collins also idk if you’re still accepting water themes in games but I know of a SNES game called Waterworld (based on a movie of the same name) which has some pretty good aquatic tracks
Best song in gaming, IMO. Mass Effect 2, “Suicide Mission”, is up there as well. And yes, I noticed you had the Queens Blood theme going on at the start. Final Fantasy is S tier.
You should listen the aquatic theme for Donkey Kong 2. It is na Ed "Lockjaw Saga" and it's really different from the first game. It's Also one of my favorits, cause it doesn't have the same tranquility and open wide vibe as in the ocean, it's actually more agitated
This music is pretty damn great. Though honestly DKC's soundtrack (and DKC2) is kind of on another level compared to other SNES games. For aquatic themes I'd love to see Ys Origin's Water Prison come up, it would be perfect for it. Doubt it's gonna happen though. It's probably the single most chill dungeon song in an Ys game.
You gotta do DK Island Swing at some point. And with the upcoming remaster of PM:TTYD a look at the soundtrack of that game is a must. Also can you consider looking at Mario RPG's soundtrack as well?
Game Developers: "Make us a water stage theme for our silly monkey game."
David Wise: "Make a priceless beloved VGM masterpiece, got it."
DK country music has aged like wine. This particular song only gets better each time you listen to it imo, it's one of those I can put on repeat for hours while I'm doing other things, it's very meditative
How is this comment 2 days old when this video just got online?
@@Velos3 They go live early for patreon supporters
david wise is a legit miracle-worker having to use the SNES soundchip for this track. He's such a legend
Another person who did amazing things with limited hardware, Jonathan Dunn's work on the Commodore 64 (RoboCop, for instance.)
@@chaos_omega Same with Tim Follin on the NES!
Didn't take him 4 months or was it weeks to make this? I just remember it was a long time.
3:23 Yes, his works were highly inspired by Phil Collins songs

One of the most famous video game tracks of all time. It was revolutionary.
The DKC games have my favorite OSTs of all time, grew up with them. It makes me happy to see other people enjoy them so much as well.

yeah id say a song called aquatic ambience would fit pretty well for a video about vgm with an aquatic ambience

I'm pretty sure Nintendo used this part 2:49 as an inspiration for Shrines themes in Breath of The wild. They're literally the same XD

16 bit sound cards have a lot of master pieces: DKC, Mario, Sonic, Streets of Rage...
The technical capabilities of the snes still blow me away

Not sure what the go is for suggesting music for these VGM vibes songs, but for aquatic themes I’d highly suggest Sea Bottom Segue from Sonic Lost World
The best part is that you can hear that they use monkey sounds in these tracks.
I loved this game. The memories.
The iconic track

Aquatic VGMs from the top of my head I can recommend:
Lower Maridia - Super Metroid
Dangerous Reef - Megaman X2 - Bubble Crab Stage (And Megaman X5 - Duff McWhalen/Tidal Whale Stage for an updated version)
Jolly Roger’s Lagoon, Atlantis and Vs. Woo Fak Fak from Banjo Tooie would be great additions to this list.

the Donkey Kong Land version is great too. actually DKL has a lot of bangers worth checking out
feels weird that you didn’t react to this yet
oh and speaking on it, it’s super likely that David Wise is a fan of Phil Collins
also idk if you’re still accepting water themes in games but I know of a SNES game called Waterworld (based on a movie of the same name) which has some pretty good aquatic tracks

There is an excellent mashup of several tracks from DKC2 with "In the Air Tonight"
