4 things I just absolutely LOVED about this video blog: 1) Ping-pong master Martin Freeman 2) "I lost my wedding ring!" 3) Orlando with the most precious laughter EVER
That virtual camera Peter was using is insanely cool. Movie tech always impresses. And can't wait to see Stephen Fry. Guy always impresses no matter what he does
They are using the virtual camera technology developed for Avatar I think. Only I think Avatar had motion capture of the actors jumping over gray cubes and cones on set for jungle scenes.
Yeah I recall them filming Avatar with something similar, but also remember the "set pieces" they used. This is cool because it's just Peter in a big, empty room filming in real-time...so to speak
danomano65 Brett Van Boven They also did a similar thing on Fellowship of the Ring in the Mines of Moria. Less advanced, of course, but the same general idea. Definitely super cool.
These videos seriously make me respect the movie making process 1000x more than I used to, and make me reconsider about the online streaming... Thank you so much for your work everyone :)
I agree they give you so much of an insight into the vast amount of work involved. And just enough content to satisfy the addiction to Tolkein that we all have!
Thumbs up if you think that Peter Jackson is the best ! We thank you so much Peter, for taking care of your public and show us those awesome production diaries ! It's so rare to see an humble dude ! God Bless You Buddy
Peter honest confession: I was very skeptic when I stepped into the theater for the desolation of Smaug as the first part was very low for me on momentum and story line.. I confess today. The desolation of Smaug blew me out of my seat! Awesome is an understatement for this masterpiece!!! Hard of to you and I am definitely going again to the theaters to check it out!!! Take a bow team Peter as you have outdone yourself!!!
Dear peter, thank you yet again for letting us experience parts of how the hobbit movies were made! It is absolutely fantastic to follow what you guys are doing and see what a massive project these movies are. Also, for people who are concidering to work with movies, this is a huge help to see what there is to do:) Thank you!
I'm really, really impressed by how the made Smaug iridescent. I was hoping they'd make him red, like in the animation, but what they did with him is far, far better. Also, the 'lamps' in his eyes came out GREAT. It's not in this video, I think it's in the last production blog or maybe the one before, but long story short. WAY TO GO WETA & HOBBIT TEAM! You're doing a fantastic job *standing ovation*
These blogs are so wonderful, thanks for uploading these. Very informative. Orlando, I love your laugh very much, and I hope the guy found his wedding ring. You guys are awesome
I would love a vlog about Benedict Cumberbatch's work on Smaug (voicing, mo-cap) :) Can't wait for the movie at all. It's like in the old days when The Lord of the Rings released every holiday. To me the movies were equal to christmas, actually ;)
Why do they put emphasis on both Legolas and Tauriel for this film when the original elf character that was supposed to be in the film was Thranduil? I wish he'd get more recognition :'(
They filmed DoS and TaBA at the same time. Literally the exact same time. Because, initially there were two films. UJ was supposed to end in Mirkwood and TaBA was supposed to completely finish the story. The announcement that there would be three films was midway through production. As of now, every single shot on The Hobbit trilogy has been filmed, save for maybe a handful of pickups.
I love watching these. Thanks for keeping us up on how all this is done. It really shows people the massive amount of work that goes into making films, especially those that are this epic in scale.
Hello sir! I just finish tonight the whole movie from lord of the ring to the hobbit! I stil couldnt move on! Great movie of all time! Thanks a lot! God bless!
What I love is that I KNOW this movie's going to go above and beyond my expectations-- thanks so much to Peter, the cast and crew for making such a wonderful experience for us!
This is definitely one of the best from the entire series so far. It's just insane how intricate these productions are, and it was really cool to get a look into the sound design.
every of these diarys that shows the incredible preparations to make the Hobbit film shut, is something extraordinary. i can't imagine people organizing all of it. the size of work is beyond of my mind. thank you for creating it, Mr Jackson, and make us enjoy)
oh I can't wait!! I'm going to watch the film in 10 days *.* I'll be so happy, sitting in the cinema and watching Legolas and all the other elves and persons running over the screen..fantastic!!
I have this overwhelming urge to be on that set. I don't care what I'll have to do. Even if I would have to bring everyone coffee, it would be the best job ever.
As an animator in training I find every moment of these blogs amazing and educational, and as a huge fan of the Hobbit, I squee like a fangirl at every single scene.
Thank You for creating this fabulous world of middle earth. The more you see the more you want to get to know middle earth. Well done for all your hard work and can't wait for desolation of smaug x
Peter Jackson, you are seriously awesome. :) I wish I'd been born earlier...and in New Zealand...and was an actreds...haha. :D Love all of the LOTR movies, along with of the Hobbit ones. Can't wait for the last one to come out!
Thank you Peter! These video-blogs show that nothing is impossible when in love )) you're definitely in love with your work! Admiration and deepest respect to you! And with all my heart looking forward to the Desolation...
i will be forever thankful to Peter Jackson that he made those films and so we are saved from average or worse hollywood crap on same books. even though money still came frome 'murica, it's honest to god new zealand movie. but even so, my fav by him is forever Bad Taste. - i'm very happy he did those famous films and became famous so that world could finally learn about really good stuff he made before. :)
Damnn Peter Jackson got one of the best jobs there is in planet earth.!! If i had the time i would work for free just to see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug unfold and ofcourse the beautifull places inside New Zealand. I got the feeling this one will give u the same dark and creepy vibe LOTR had!
Dear Sir Peter Jacken, thank you for all diaries and movies! After LoTR i sought it will be hard to do a better film! But you did it with the first Hobbit movie. Now i wait since December 2012 for the next epic movie! Thank you! Thank you!
So, It's not just a guy moving a camera in a fps like game, it's the director (etc), moving the camera in the real world, through a virtual environment. Wow!
That's not the case for all movies. This is a new technology which was developed in 2009 for Avatar and eventually the upcoming movie titled 'WarCraft'.
These videos are so wonderful. Thank you for putting these up. Smaug looks absolutely awesome, even if that wasn't the finished product. Can't wait to see him in the film.
Thats a really cool way to do these inventive camera movements. I first realized those "Peter Jackson" camera moves on Minas Morgul in the Return of the King, but I guess these were all hand animated. Doing this in some kind of motion capture situation fits the style really nice.
LOVE LOVE LOVE all the extras/behind the scenes/outakes/production diaries that PJ n WETA work hard in making and provide for the public!!! i would enjoy if more movies did this as well, but im bettin there is much to risk in doing so. thankfully, the quality with wich all the tolkien movies have been, and continue to be produced(and getin to see in depth how thats ackomplished) is paramount to getting to see HOW DaVinci created his masterpieces! PJ, Alan lee,John Howe, you're all gods to me! cant wait!!! :D
I'm a huge fan of these production diaries.
I wish more films would give us these glimpses.
Same
I wish you would do more movie reviews.
I wish you would remake the Star Wars prequels
just EPIC, imagine how i felt in the early 90-s and wanted to see these, behind the scenes. They where very Limited.

I laughed so hard when I guy said "i lost my wedding ring".
Just gotta bring back a very large, very golden chalice full of gold coins for the lady at home and she'll forgive you.
Kiwi humour- a joke. A really funny one haha
😂😂😂in there
4 things I just absolutely LOVED about this video blog:
1) Ping-pong master Martin Freeman
2) "I lost my wedding ring!"
3) Orlando with the most precious laughter EVER
Oh, dear; that little giggle from Orlando Bloom at 3:35 gets me every time!
These diaries are great!

Been so long since I watched the tens of hours of Bonus Features on my Fellowship of the Ring DVD, but very cool to know. Thanks!
These videos seriously make me respect the movie making process 1000x more than I used to, and make me reconsider about the online streaming... Thank you so much for your work everyone :)
I really appreciate these videos.. so much fun, so interesting, and so exciting!
I agree they give you so much of an insight into the vast amount of work involved. And just enough content to satisfy the addiction to Tolkein that we all have!
Frodo Baggins There's internet in the undying lands?

It's something.

I love the Benedict Cumberbatch cameo! Peter probably had to convince him to stop talking with Martin Freeman about Sherlock....(maybe not.)
These production diaries make me feel even closer and more attached to the movies. I gratuitously appreciate it. Thank you so much P. Jackson!
8:10 Smaug looks amazing. A lot of finishing has been made since the first trailer obviously.
So many talented people making such a great movies that I had watched more than ten times.
Yeah Legolas action! I just looove Orlando's giggle! :)
very exciting; I particularly like the material on sound and music.
GADS! That's Stephen Fry!!!! I love that man!!
These blogs are so wonderful, thanks for uploading these. Very informative.
Orlando, I love your laugh very much, and I hope the guy found his wedding ring. You guys are awesome

I love these movies You're amazing Peter Jackson
Why do they put emphasis on both Legolas and Tauriel for this film when the original elf character that was supposed to be in the film was Thranduil? I wish he'd get more recognition :'(
A bunch of the actors: What am I gonna do now? I'll have to find a new job!
Me: (coughs) there and back again!
I hope you realized that they film a lot of desolation of smaug and there and back again al at once
They filmed DoS and TaBA at the same time. Literally the exact same time. Because, initially there were two films. UJ was supposed to end in Mirkwood and TaBA was supposed to completely finish the story. The announcement that there would be three films was midway through production. TheManMostMysterious well, yeah, I knew that, I just thought that TaBa was still a few weeks behind.
Oh my goodness! Just as awesome as all the others!
Rewatching this hits different
wow this is so awesome... everything that goes behind this
a video recording camera that records in a virtual world made inside 3d software, now that is an impressive piece of hardware
OMG, That last shot of Smaug!!! Oh wow, I can't WAIT!!!
This is very very inspiring for all us! A Dream very high is a first way for when you want something. Thank you Peter,Thank you for dreaming for us.
3:33 oh my, "I saw you shaking that ass
