Well Thranduil will be in the Amazon show, although how much of him we see depends on what they consider important. After that, the obvious next adaptations would be either a movie/show about the fall of Arnor (which they’ve apparently decided Thranduil was an active part of), or the Children of Húrin. The latter movie would show us young Thranduil, albeit with none of the self-assured sophistication that we see in The Hobbit movies. To connect the audience to the story more easily though, I could perhaps see them also having Thranduil be the narrator: telling the story to a very young Legolas. After all, Legolas in LotR is similar in many ways to Beleg Cúthalion: one of the heroes of The Children of Húrin. His father would have actually known Beleg and Túrin, and perhaps even witnessed much of the story. Certainly in any case, he would know the story well: because it was Daeron, the minstrel of Doriath, who wrote the story.
I can imagine him wearing, hyacinths and lavender and him smiling slightly whenever a bee takes a nip of his flowers. And while he passes a cloud of spring reaches your nose.

I'd heard that his wife was never mentioned in the books so I obviously couldn't imagine they had intended to give him such a backstory. It was only after I watched this video and realized that something else, far purer and personal, was meant to be the driving force behind his actions, I could finally connect with this character.
Liv Tyler and Lee Pace absolutely embodied what Tolkien described as his elves. They outshine even Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom in how they took their place in the story.
although these movies had great potential i feel they were a diaster, in 20 years we could get a proper hobit film or 2 (if they learn from the mistakes of these ones) also Amazon is making something else (following Aragorn pre-lotr, a young aragorn which will either be very cool or another missed opportunity.)
Matthew Burger i don’t think so. Of course, they weren’t great, but they werent a disaster, especially because there was so much effort and hard work put into it that you can notice the greatness within the movie. The reason no remake/reboot will work is probably because the Hobbit movies are part of the universe of the Lord of the Rings movies. And since those movies then are naturally held together by the same vision of Peter Jackson, its gonna be hard to get those movies made with success. Not to mention copy right problems.
@@martinmp19 Yep, and Círdan and Elrond both got theirs from Gil-Galad who was the original owner after Celebrimbor created the three elven rings and gave two of them to him.
Yes but we also need to remember that the Main forces of Sauron were directed towards Gondor, Dale and Lothlorian. So Thranduil didn't exactly face Saurons significant force
@@srinjoyroychoudhury7034 True, but he and his Mirkwood elves fought in assistance to the men of Dale and the Lothlorien elves, in addition to fighting in Mirkwood (and vice versa) so technically he still faced an extremely significant force.

Tihanyi Dani The Tolkien estate and Warner brothers have sued each other multiple times over breach of contract for the tiniest of reasons pertaining to these movies. Christopher Tolkien is a notorious critic and hater of the LOTR movies. That old cunt needs to die before any company even has a dream of purchasing the rights to the rest of Tolkien’s books (which include the silmarillion, forgotten tales, children of Hurin, Fall of Gondolin etc.)

Yes yes, but make that 3 films, add a love triangle and add in Tom Bombadil but as a proud person of color or we scrap the movie and give it to another director who can't say no to us!
I cannot get over the fact that Lee Pace was helping out in Weta Workshop making costumes. That is SO cool, and yeah it's hilarious that he helped make costumes and swords for dwarfs instead of his own elven kins.
@@jessie_4921 The making-of content for The Hobbit has so many nuggets of wholesome content. I admit that I think I look at them as a sorta comfort thing now. I went through a very emotionally rough period of my life during my senior year of high school, and there were times when I just heckin' stayed home. One of these times, I watched the stuff with my mom, and it was just a really nice temporary distraction from being wracked with anxiety.
I know what you mean. No disrespect to Legolas--- he's still gorgeous...but Thranduil burns with an inner fire. ...and his voice, that height, that hair like a waterfall of blonde silk...it's a whole different level of hot.
Lol I had the biggest crush on Legolas when the trilogy came out(I was in high school). And then when the Hobbit movies came out and Thranduil came onscreen I was like 'Legolas who?'.
Okay I admit I really adore that Gandalf and Thrundrial moment especially when he says, "Those gems aren't all your wife left you she left you a son." part I was crying of how sweet it is.
Damn... I'm in love with Thranduil's character, and Lee Pace did a incredible job. I mean... INCREDIBLE. All about Thranduil is so unique and perfect - they way he moves, the way he speaks, those expressions on his face... he did more than acting, he really was Thranduil. ... but now I also see that he's an amazing person in real life, I mean, come on! He actually worked on weapons and armour! How cool is that : D And the way he was excited about his sword, just so heartwarming : D
I've always imagined Thranduil's fighting style to look and feel like flowing water, every slash and slice mowing down the orcs as if he was dancing. I'm glad they didn't follow through with the acrobatic flamboyant version.
Lee Pace was fucking epic as Thanduil. All the hobbit cast was just perfect. I hope if Jackson makes more movies he recast all the actor from the hobbit and LOTR.
So sad, he was so weak looking when he was shooting the hobbit, and he still did it at his age for all the fans. What a great man. I hope he's looking down from Heaven seeing how much the fans wish he was still here so they could say "thank you taking time away from the end days of your life for us, it means the world to us." RIP
Thranduil is the most beautiful elf ever!! And I like Peter Jackson's elves so much, they look so elegant with long hair and crown, their movements scream that they are elves, ...much better than The ring of power...
They could do a film about the war in the north. During the war of the third age, Erebor was sieged by the orcs and goblins. In good faith he helped defend the lonely mountain.
Before the Hobbit movies I thought I was past the elf crush stage, because I had a huge crush on Legolas when I was younger. But oh how wrong I was. That elf crush stage came back and hit me like a train when we got to meet Thranduil.
Lee Pace was so good in this role. In my opinion, arguably one of the top 3 most charismatic and badass in the entire Hobbit/LOTR movies. He really invested himself time and training-wise in the role and it shows.
Fantastic casting for Thranduil, Lee Pace so nailed this part! He has just the right blend of elegance, strength, and power tempered by the pain from the loss of his wife. Of course, he's quite a handsome fellow as a man which makes him quite the Elf King!
The extended edition shouldn't have omitted some of this scenes, it would've made the viewer have a better understanding of Thranduil. Thumbs up for this amazing clips!
What I loved about Thranduil's fighting style was that it was a direct opposite to Legolas' acrobatics. The economy of movement, the lethal grace, the serpentine deadliness are dazzling to watch. Lee Pace is a study in the deadly beauty of combat.
I'm pretty sure it will happen in a couple of years, I bet what you want they are already planning a new Tolkien movie. As they did with Legolas, they'll make up some new story with Thranduil/Lee Pace 'cause he's got so many fangirls. I just hope they won't come up with some other bs like that Tauriel/Kili thing. And they better hurry up since the guy is not getting younger. 😜
11vivisection11 I know. I just meant like in general, I would really love to see a movie with Angmar ;) Maybe a movie about the northern kingdom also? The opportunities are endless :D
+Mickey Holm does anyone know any info about Zinifer the Dark Elf who is also a character in the game Heroes of Newerth it would be kind of amazing if he'd also joined this movie trilogy
I would love to know Thranduil's story. How he met his wife, his story with her and what happened to her. Then, young Legolas with his father. Someone would have to write the story and that's some pretty big shoes to fill! But if done right, it would be wonderful!
Except for the fact that he's not actually single. Elves don't actually "die" in the sense that humans do. When they are killed in Middle Earth, they are reborn in the Undying Lands beyond the western sea. It's why elves don't take second partners, because there's always the chance of one day being reunited with them, even if they have to wait thousands of years for that to happen. And here's what this also means. At the beginning of the Fourth Age, when all the elves, including Thranduil, eventually leave Middle Earth by sailing across the western sea, they all get to be reunited with their fallen loved ones who reside in Valinor. So basically, Thranduil gets to be with his wife again, and they can all live there happily until the end of days. How do I know all of this? Well, my mother is a fan of Tolkiens works. She's also read The Silmarillion, so she's familiar with all the lore behind the elves, and she's told me about it before. But yeah, I guess my point is... sorry ladies, Thranduil is still a taken man. And a faithful one at that.
12:05 This scene so should've been in the movie! Wtw were they thinking leaving it out?! It revealed to people a lot about Thranduil, why he acted the way he did and is the way he is. His character development is the best. How he changes a lot but yet is still the same intimidating, fabulous king from before. He, like Loki, needs a movie all to himself.
That's crazy that an actor actually got to do some of the work on costumes, props, and weapons for the film. He clearly loved everything about the film and so cool for production to say "Sure dude we'll teach you"
whidi arto same here I want to read the hobbit and LOTR but my problem is I am more interested in the side characters than the main ones hahaha we just need separate books for the elves
You just have to put it aside that Lee Pace is actually younger than Orlando Bloom. It was a huge compliment to Lee’s performance that he was convincing as being a far older, wiser Elf, but pained by ancient wars that he has a coldness that Legolas doesn’t have.
The fact that Lee wanted to work in the workshop makes him so super relatable! I would have loved to do that as an actor and it shows how he really had an amazing time and made the best out of it! :)
I love Lee Pace’s interest in everything behind the scenes and how he wanted to be a part of it. He loved every aspect of the film truly and completely
I, like, honestly feel offended that these amazing scenes were not in the movies. I feel that they give Thranduil so much more depth I suppose. When I first watched the Hobbit a few months ago, I wanted to know why he wanted the necklace so badly and the story behind all of the rings he wore. The answers I had to find on Tumblr should have been in the movies
Ugi XXI I assume she fought in a battle at Gundabad since Legolas said that is where she laid forgotten or something along those lines. I guess she was beaten by an orc or maybe she saved Thranduil from a sneak attack. The possibilities are practically limitless
Fair reminder that after the war with the Ring, Thranduil renamed Mirkwood to something like Forest of Green Leaves. Legolas' name means Greenleaf. if that's not father-son pride I don't know what is.
Aesthetically Emotional Eyrn Lasgalen. Wood of greenleaves. It's one of my favorite things that I have ever heard and read concerning LOTR and the hobbit
I actually thought that it was called Greenwood first and then the sickness came in and people in middle earth started to call it mirkwood and the elves just went with but idk. i haven’t watched it in ages.
Lee Pace is such a beast... I already loved him since "The Fall", but his Thranduil role is just perfect! To think it's the ONLY actor in the whole cast who didn't needed a wig or make-up... He just showed on the set, and radiates charisma, power and glory "as is", all natural.
The scene where Thranduil/Lee stands with the sword pointed downward and slightly backward to his right almost made me weep. Incredible beautiful. I think Peter Jackson might consider putting together an extended extended version of The Hobbit and LOTR. We can't get enough of these images. Some are truly breathtaking. Thanks for sharing your remarkable insights.
I love how happy and enthusiastic Lee seems to be about acting in this film! He seems like he has very little ego, and would be a really great guy to work with.
Lee as Thranduil did an excellent job, I do not see another actor for this role. It makes elf king, single father, looks elegant and warrior, it is amazing how sexy he looks in each part of the film where it appears. That masculine voice. Simply, thanks Lee for existing. We, the fans, need you to make a film about the life of Thrandruil.
@@gatortown4690 K but I'm going to ask for a movie about a character that has more to him than one might assume and who has lived a long, interesting life. But even if that weren't the case, you can't just fucking put people down for wanting to see more of a character they like even if you think it's just 'fangirling', shut up.
Good character development, consistent with Tolkien's vision. I think the good professor would like how Thranduil's character was fleshed out by this gifted team.
Possibly, but in the book he literally says: "Long will I tarry ere I begin this war for gold!" Basicly he was much more likeable and wise in the books. So would Tolkien have liked it? No clue. I however, do like his character quite alot.
Agreed: definitely more likable and wise in the book, however the book itself says this king and his people "were more dangerous and less wise" than the High Elves--a line helpfully echoed by Beorn in the Hobbit 1 movie. The elven king's behavior toward the dwarves belied much of his fair speech, and he did choose to bring a full army to the lonely mountain. Professor Tolkien was in the thick of parenting and many other responsibilities when he wrote The Hobbit, and simply didn't have the time to develop all his characters as fully as he would have liked to back then to meet his publisher's deadline. Few writers ever have that luxury, but when the writing is as good as Tolkien's, happily other talented writers like Peter & Co. have the privilege of helping make Middle-earth even deeper and richer. That's something Professor Tolkien himself was wise enough to anticipate in the letter he wrote that his son Christopher chose to use as the preface to The Silmarillion.
+Allacin Morimizu - The part in the book that describes the wood-elves as being "more dangerous and less wise" than the High Elves actually is referring to just that, the wood-elves. It doesn't say that their king is also "more dangerous and less wise". Thranduil doesn't even get mentioned until that long descriptive paragraph is over and then he is simply referred to as "their greatest king". Being one of the Sindar, Thranduil is considerably more wise than any of the Silvan elves - and don't forget that Celeborn (Galadriel's husband) is also one of the Sindar and is named in LOTR by Galadriel as Celeborn the Wise. As for his behaviour toward the dwarves, this is understandable and actually quite justified when you consider that they were caught trespassing in his realm and refused to give any reason why they were there and would not even identify themselves (Thranduil even believed that their actions had been attempted attacks against his people). Even without the background created by Tolkien later on (of Sauron recently sending his servants to search the Anduin which lies near the borders of Mirkwood, the attacks on Gondor, stirrings in Dol Guldur) his actions are realistic and are in fact the standard procedure in any country when someone is caught illegally crossing the borders. Taking his army to the mountain can also be understood when you remember that Tolkien was a soldier himself and knew the importance of ensuring a strong position didn't fall into enemy hands. He believed the dwarves to be dead, Smaug dead and the mountain now lay defenceless and a prime target for enemy forces - he even referred to the situation as "an ill wind that blows no one any good". All things considered, I believe Tolkien wrote the Elvenking in the style of a good, medieval king who was compassionate, kind and even possessed a sense of humour; but also knew the importance of security and keeping his realm safe. PJ and his team completely failed in bringing most of these qualities to the screen.
It is so cool that he was working on behind the scenes stuff too. That shows that it isn’t just the spotlight that he loves, it’s the whole production. As a theatre kid, I can appreciate that.
Thranduill is so handsome and has a beautiful face and appearance that every time I was watching the film I could notice nothing but his face 😅 Only now I see how many amazing things are made for him such as a sword, a crown, costume design etc. That's really a great work 👍

This is beautiful. The writer was a woman, which is fantastic, and she was a nerd. She understood the story, and everything she added to the story was in-character and well thought out. She didn't despise the world like the writers of ROP did, or go on an ego trip, trying to insert herself into the story. She respected it. This is art

just think. in 20 years, some fool is going to try to remake this film and all of us will show no mercy to him.
Not even 20 years, Amazon is doing it right now. Fools!
And no mercy shall be shown to YOU. The same as in our real life history. Interesting......
although these movies had great potential i feel they were a diaster, in 20 years we could get a proper hobit film or 2 (if they learn from the mistakes of these ones) also Amazon is making something else (following Aragorn pre-lotr, a young aragorn which will either be very cool or another missed opportunity.)
This needs more likes.
The way Lee Pace sits down at 0:52 is so graceful and elegant. I didn't think a man could be so majestic.

He did a good job in the role as Ronan also in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie too
Lee Pace playing with his sword is like a child that found a stick and now can’t stop playing with it
I think that everyone who watched this movie wants a Thranduil movie

Lee was just a closet LARPER who got his dream job, I reckon. 😉
Thranduil doesn't have a Ring of Power, right? Which means he managed to protect his realm with his own power. Gods, I love him more.
Yeah, the Elven Rings are held by Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf.
NATIK ? And Gandalf got his from Cirdan I believe

What I loved about Thranduil's fighting style was that it was a direct opposite to Legolas' acrobatics. The economy of movement, the lethal grace, the serpentine deadliness are dazzling to watch. Lee Pace is a study in the deadly beauty of combat.

A character who seems so elegant with a cold personality that changes beautifully throughout the story. Love it
When your father is hotter than you and he's single....
Yeeees
I offer myself as his sacrifice.
Is it bad I have dreams about being married to Thranduil? He's so freaking hot and a bad ass lol
Exactly!
12:05 This scene so should've been in the movie! Wtw were they thinking leaving it out?!
It revealed to people a lot about Thranduil, why he acted the way he did and is the way he is.

Thats terribly sad. I wonder why Tolkien didnt mention about her in the book.
Ugi XXI I guess he didn't want to stray to far away from the main plot?
Fair reminder that after the war with the Ring, Thranduil renamed Mirkwood to something like Forest of Green Leaves. Legolas' name means Greenleaf.

It's so great to see how enthusiastic Lee is about the movie(s) and the role of Thranduil. It comes across in his performance, such a great character.
Good character development, consistent with Tolkien's vision. I think the good professor would like how Thranduil's character was fleshed out by this gifted team.
+Allacin Morimizu
IDK, This one was more of an asshole.
But I think that's the point: he WAS arrogant and self absorbed, BUT he changed for the better. I find that encouraging. :)
Possibly, but in the book he literally says: "Long will I tarry ere I begin this war for gold!"
Basicly he was much more likeable and wise in the books.
Lee is always great. He is the reason I watched halt and catch fire.

This is beautiful. The writer was a woman, which is fantastic, and she was a nerd. She understood the story, and everything she added to the story was in-character and well thought out.
