Great lesson. Thank you, Karol. I just got a darbuka about two weeks ago. I fell in love with the sound when I was a journalist working in Baghdad in 2003. An Iraqi man played for me in his drum shop on Karrada Boulevard. He was so kind and gracious, despite how crushing the war was. Fell in love with the darbuka, and with the Iraqi people. I think the desire to play has something to do with wanting to stay connected with the feeling I had when I lived and worked with Iraqis. But I know it's also about the joy I felt being in that man's presence, and being in awe of his talent, and the beauty of the music.

So many videos out there either assume that you already know, and can already play certain things, or dumb things down so much that it's incredibly tedious, and boring. I have been rhythmically beating the crap out of things since the early/mid 90's, and basically learned what I know on the fly. Your style of instruction explains things in a way that just about any novice can understand, yet breaks things down so that an "advanced amateur" such as myself can gain a more thorough understanding of the basic 101 level beats and techniques that he is already familiar with. Thanks so much for taking the time to film and post these vids!

But still a little remark - the sound in your darbuka tutorials seems distorted with a low bit rate or sample rate, especially in this one. Could you please fix this ?
