    How appropriate that you included a key in the St. Anthony pocket shrine! As the patron Saint of lost articles, people have been praying to him for hundreds of years to help them find their keys.

      Why thank you, Robin. Calm, eh? Maybe I am now as I've been doing this for years. When I first started I talked fast and carelessly but maybe not in a bad way. I had more fun when I didn't know what I didn't know. Isn't that often the way? 😉

    Hi! This is the first time I look at your chanel, and l want to see everything! Thank you for charing so much information. And this last one with all the french stuff is fantastic! Also loved how you showed the autumn leaves preservation. Happened to color my own yarn some years ago, so lucky to have all the equipment and alun. 😍Just wondered if it is safe/ healthy to damp inside?🧐Again, so happy to have «found» you!😍Best regards, Hilde from Kongsberg, Norway

      Hello and welcome, Hilda! Thank you very much for your message. Your yarn dye sounds gorgeous. I hope you try the paper and leaves, too. I am sorry but I do not understand the question about safety. Do you mean is it safe to let the bundles dry slowly as they are damp inside? Yes, but keep turning them so they dry slowly but evenly. Please keep in touch! Kelly from Wales

    When I see you show these things, I always wonder what led people to give these away... I find it a bit sad...
    My mother and her mother both wore pins with medals like the ones you showed. My grandmother’s was exactly like that. My mother’s is smaller and with smaller and fewer medals. I kept them both, after they passed away, and I stitched my grandmother’s medals onto a book I made with old family photos. I still have my mother’s exactly how she left it. She passed away only 14 months ago and I didn’t want to touch it just yet...
    I absolutely love the shrines you made. Maybe I will try to make one myself 💙💛❤️💗💜🖤💚🧡♥️

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Ann, it is my understanding that a normal period of mourning for wearing black was one year then the ladies of the family could transition from all black to dark violet for another year until in time they could wear colours again!

    Just wow. What an extraordinary array of items. And, oh! The penmanship of days gone by! I’m told I have nice handwriting, but it’s nothing compared to the beautiful and consistent handwriting you see from centuries ago.
    My heart really skipped a beat with the 17th century book. Like you, I adore books and would have felt so honored to hold it, if I were in your place. I probably would have wept. 17th century France is my special interest.
    I recognized Joan right away in the thumbnail of this video (I don’t think I’ve come across your videos before this one showed up in my thread). As a female fight choreographer, I’ve definitely admired Joan of Arc for a long time as one of the few female fighters people are generally familiar with.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hello and welcome! Okay, I think you must have the coolest job ever, perhaps after altered book maker. Joan was definitely badass. I don't believe in ghosts but it is a haunting feeling to be in buildings where she was and be reminded that she was a real person. As for the handwriting, it's even more remarkable as pens did not exist. Yikes.

      @@BookandPaperArts Oh, I bet it was an amazing experience to get to visit the places where she lived. Europe is so rich in history. I’ve only gotten to go twice. Once, because my dog won us a trip to London, and the other for work to the toy fair in Nuremberg.
      Suddenly, my life sounds much more interesting when I type things to you, than it feels in reality.
      When the pandemic hit, theatre and film work disappeared, so I turned my creativity to making journals. It’s so satisfying to create something tangible. Though, I did make costumes and props and taught crafts pre-pandemic.
      It makes it all the more incredible that the penmanship of people pre-pen was so beautiful and so fine!

    I’m late to the party but I still enjoyed seeing your haul of art! I’m not familiar with the type or method of wax you mentioned. Could you tell me how it is done? I loved the look it created!

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  7 месяцев назад +2

      Hello and welcome, Teena. Do you mean the sealing wax on the envelopes? Those are vintage and came that way. If you mean the altered altoid tin shrine, I went encaustic which is a fancy way of saying that I added a layer of melted wax with an old brush to some paper with text and then melted it further with a small cooking blow torch (these are cheap and you can buy at hardware or cooking store or on Ebay). You can kind of move the wax around with the flame and then when it cools you have a cloudy, mysterious background. Try looking up "encaustic wax" online or on Pinterest. Also, stay tuned because this is exactly the kind of question that helps me make content and I will do a video on it soon! Kelly

    I love the Joan of Arc piece with the exquisite lace. I also love the hand written papers that you brought back from France. I was just told that the schools here in western Massachusetts no longer teach cursive penmanship! I feel it is important both for fine motor skills, but also for the brain. Anyway, I don't want to rant! But I could!

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  11 месяцев назад +1

      Rant on, Ann, because you are preaching to the choir. One of the (several) reasons I like France is that pensmanship is very much still a thing. You can go to the pen and paper section of the smallest rural grocery store and it will have children's notebooks ruled for writing practice and children's size fountain pens!

    • @annwaddell7321
      @annwaddell7321 11 месяцев назад

      Well, you just made my day! I thought that was the case, because I love the French script, and there are videos on how to write like that, and they show children practicing! We should all rant on about cursive writing and the benefits! You put a smile on my face!@@BookandPaperArts

      Hi hi hi. She was a bit intimidating and occasionally at French antique markets if you annoy a seller they can just decide not to sell to you and that's that, so I was treading very lightly indeed but it worked out, partly because I knew that box was meant for me.

      Hello Monroe. Thank you for this message. I am not sure what kind of fear but I honoured that I may have helped in some way. Kelly

      The fear I am speaking of is the fear to get started. Looking at the blank page and being afraid of it. Through your videos I have been inspired to try and dirty up the page. I have quite a collection now of bits of this and that. Thank you again for your instruction and inspiration through your videos.

      Now this makes me very happy to hear. As a teacher of in-person workshops I can tell you that this is the most common barrier to creating that I come across - the fear of the blank page, the intimidating brand, new blank book. I am truly delighted to hear that you are boldly making messes and going into those pages. Kelly @@monroepowell4220

    “Robert Downey Jr please
    give me a call” 🤣🤣🤣
    I just about spewed my coffee all over the place!!!
    Seriously though, this haul just took my breath away! All of that beautiful penmanship, those flourishes! Then all the sadness of the funeral cards.
    Congratulations, I think you just scored the best haul of the century! I could spend hours pouring over all of that!
