- Today I have a look at what's in my portable art kit, my art supply survival kit. I am about to leave for France for a month and this is what I take with me to work on art projects on the road as well as work in illustrated journal.
If you have any questions or if you would like to tell us about your favourite art supplies, just leave a note in the comments below.

I have an online course THE BOOK OF YOU: How to Make and Keep an Illustrated Journal. You can find it here ($32):

I’m so happy you posted! I’m new and have been going back to the beginning and learning quite a bit. How wonderful that you’ll be visiting France, again. Will you be selling your boxes with new treasures in them? When i visit family i usually take too many books and magazines to catch up on. (I have at least 50 in my to-read pile.) I have a regular diary that i take and write in. It’s a 1936 Wanamaker. I also have cheap composition books that i use for picture gluing and collage. I glue two pages together so i can use a lot of odds and ends. These days, i’m trying to draw more and use more watercolor in my journals. Sometimes i’ll take one or two of those traveling, as well. You’re not the only one with many books on the go.😊 I have a dream journal, too, but that stays home. I forget most of my dreams before i can journal about them. At the moment, i’m also working on a carved tile i designed. And, i’m up to my neck in mod podge making a bowl with teabags. ‘Arty’ people seem to have many projects on the go. Like you, i’m retired and find filling my days with creative endeavors so, so fulfilling. I used to think i needed a reason to play with art. No more! Thanks for posting. I’m off to see what else you have to say in your old videos. Safe travels! Not that it matters, but i forgot to mention that i also do hand stitching which is really my first love. I don’t know why i forgot that! Glue fumes……
Hi Debbie. Bless you for backing up my taking lots of books decision. There is never enough time to read In Real Life so I am looking forward more than I can say to sitting in the sun somewhere and catching up. Do you add hand stitching to journal pages? Kelly
@@BookandPaperArts Hi, Kelly, Yes, i’ve added some stitching in past journals. I’ve made a stitched journal, all fabric, as well. These days, not so much. I saw where someone had an antique journal that had about four stitches in a repair. It looked fabulous! I think it was from one of the links you shared some weeks ago. I hope you’re enjoying your time away. Early days, i know, but what fun!
Love it, forever student💕Enjoy your time.
In the middle of the week I fly to Germany, my birth country. For my few days stay I’ll take a thin paper journal for writing, Inktense small pan set, water brushes & a small art journal.
Some fine liners for fast & loose sketching. It’s a trip to see family but I will journal at the very least. 🛫🛬🌞
Hi Sabine. I learned to just sketch stuff in front of my family on visits and they accept it, especially if I ask them to add to my pages. Do you like the Derwent pan sets? I have them on my maybe-list.
I followed everything til you got to your journals. Why are there skipped pages between entries. I can't wait for your shares of your trip. Going to stay at an apt for a month sounds like a dream. Have a safe and prosperous visit to France.
Uhm, it's like this. In my diary I write from front to back AND from back to front, on different topics. It makes me uncomfortable to put different topics and themes in one book and even I can see that having four-plus diaries at once is getting silly so I double up on them and cheat. How about you?
@@BookandPaperArts I get what you mean. I don't travel much anymore, Mobility issues. I was doing illustrated journals of trips before. Then I saw your common place journal but I've become more introverted since the pandemic and my retirement from a very serious Healthcare laboratory carrer. So I spend most time reading, arting and occ lunches with a girlfriend. So not lots to journal per se. So I'm thinking of just doing illustrated Journaling of favorite thoughts or memories I have . Its the creating and playing I enjoy the most.
Excellent coverage on water soluble materials! I just got a Sendak roll and have been looking for some inspiration for how to fill it, and this was just the kind of video I needed. Thank you!
Hi Ashley. What a lovely thing to hear. Thank you. I treated myself to a Sendak roll on a pretty big birthday. It now has ink and paint stains all over it and looks the better for it. If you like water solubles (and who doesn't?) I have a recent video looking at some Derewent charcoal colours that double nicely as water soluble if you want to have a look. Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to go to Sennelier in Paris. With money.
Hi Sam, you don't have to tell me twice! I got my watercolour set there last year (on sale). 😺 But most of my trip will be in a small town with its own art supply store that makes me very happy.
Happy Travel. I hope you have a safe journey. And fantastic you're going to France again. Thank you for sharing, Kelly. Until then 🤗
Thank you, dear Lucy. Some video sight-seeing is on its way. Kelly

Thank you, Kerry. I am so excited!
That coffee stained pages look like horses, even the small darker patch on the left side. Lovvely
I agree! I saw a beautiful outline of a horse, that even had an eyelash!
Wow. I didn't see that but now I do. Thanks for comparing notes!

Thanks, Janett. I am so happy to hear that pages are being made. Lots of urban sketching?
Some…..weather dependent right now….take pictures to sketch later
Hello Kelly, after my visit at your atelier it was very special to me watching your newest video 😍 thank you for all your tipps 🥰 as you know I'm on a road trip, we will go up to the North of the UK, over to the Outer Hebrides. I will do some travel journaling and memory keeping, think there will be a lot to take down. I have some travelers company notebooks with me, two "junk journals" I made myself partly from junk envelopes and the most beautiful one, the one I got from you 😍 Fortunately I have room in our camper van for all the journaling stuff I brought. As always it's far to much 😁
Kelly, I wish you a safe journey, have a wonderful time. Thank you, Andrea
Thank you Kelly . Have a great time ❤
Thank you, Kashmira!
Safe travels! Can’t wait to see what France reveals to you this time! Trying to talk my husband into a trip there for our 30th next year. Great video! 🖤Gilly
This was great! Can’t wait to see what you do with magazines in France!🇫🇷
I bought six magazines at the local thrift store yesterday. Ready to get started!
Your channel came up in my feed and you gained a new subscriber. My art style has recently evolved into something similar to yours and my muse got excited. There's tons of inspiration on your channel to make it happy. No doubt there will be lots of fun watching your videos.
Love seeing what you pack! I plan to put something together myself for summer traveling and outdoor adventures we plan on doing! Looking forward to seeing more on your adventures! Thanks for sharing!
