If you would like to learn how to make and keep your own illustrated journal, I have an online class THE BOOK OF YOU. You can find it here ($32): kelly-s-school-b1d1.thinkific.com/courses/the-book-of-you-making-and-keeping-a-visual-diary
Good gracious, little traveler, have a total blast at this class! I know you will, and most every moment your not in class, you'll be in some beautiful, ancient, crumbling church, sketching away! Enjoy the food, the folks and best of all, the Medieval ink making!! Can't wait to see the work that you come back home with, and hear all the fantastic stories! Ciao, my sweet friend!
Thanks Lynda. It was a terrific trip and the journal was indeed just the right size. More and more I am thinking I will not have to buy a journal ever again - they are better if made for what we need them for as and when!
@@BookandPaperArts I’m so glad to hear your trip was terrific! I agree with you completely on making homemade journals! I use to paint on canvas; now, I paint and decorate in so many ways with paper & recyclable items and I’m loving every moment 💯 Welcome home, Kelly!
The cover is a triumph, love the balance of the two semi-circles, and the contrast of the old document strip is wonderful. What a happy accident the cup mark turned out to be! And thanks for the scans, they're delicious.
Have an adventurous trip filled with learning lots of new things about ink. Enjoy filling this journal with travel memories and when you return, I will be grateful to see what you have recorded. Have a safe trip!
Hello Kelly, thank you so much for sharing the process of making your art journal 🥰 It turned out so beautiful 😍 I wish you safe travels and an amazing workshop in Italy, Andrea
Wishing you a lovely trip, Kelly! Love the "sitting in churches" part! I'm going ot be on the lookout for books like those you showed us. Just beautiful, they are, and so is your journal. Happy travels!
I did some coffee and tea dyeing ystdy, so this is a perfect project. Love your page edges, such a cool textural look! Safe travels, hope you have an awesome time! 🖤 Gilly
Awesome, a medevial ink workshop! Please share how that goes and the shorts or a long video when back home. I, too, create a variety of small specific journals these days for one use or themed subjects. Thank you for sharing the creation of this one for your trip. And, thank you for the free printables.
Have fun in Italy. It must be so nice to be in Europe and jump over to another country to do art. We are planning on being in Italy for a month in Spring. I will be looking for art in the thrift shops.
Hi Linda. I am indeed a very lucky woman as it costs next to nothing to jump around, especially off season. I try to make the most of it! Where are you going in Italy?
New subbie here and I enjoyed watching your process on this journal. I’ve made many journals but only one “ art” journal. I like the idea of tearing the edges! Have a wonderful trip!
Hello and welcome, Vickie. The great thing about this little book is there is no excuse for not making bunches of them. Hope you have fun with it! Kelly
Kelly, have a great time. Recently had a go at making some iron gall ink. Took forever to collect all the oak galls, and it was only semi-successful. Looking forward to hearing about the workshop. Ciao!
I love your videos... so full of details...I was a book binder so its nice 4 me to play with no rules...and if you ever come to Florence... let me know..I would love to meet you and buy you a coffe ❤
Hi, Friends - Treat yourself and your senses by making one or more of these books using Kelly’s methods. I have made several and am happily traveling through France this summer with a handmade journal for each location we stay in. These books add to the adventure and if I can do it, so can you. Thank you, Kelly, for all that you give us. - Audrey
Why Audrey, thank you so, so much. Also, this makes me happy. I used to buy a big sketchbook and use it for months at a time but lately I really enjoy having a book just for one jaunt. Where in France? Kelly
We started with two weeks in Paris, now wrapping up a dozen days in Aix-en-Provence (some great old churches for sitting); leaving tomorrow for Nice. Loving the handmade books. Their wonkiness adds to the mood of the illustrated journaling. Thanks again for all your encouragement.
Kelly, you are going to the workshop with a beautiful journal. I love your paper choices and the cover is wonderful. The tea dyed papers came out so well. How heavy are the papers that you used? Wishing you a wonderful workshop experience.
Thank you for the video! Something I have wondered when dyeing papers (tea\coffee, food coloring, etc., will using a mordant help the paper accept dye better? I know alum is used dyeing fabric, so...? Have a wonderful trip!😊
Hi Jerald. Now this is only my experience but when I tried a mordant with tea two things happened. The colour turned rather burnt orange AND way darker than I wanted. And tea itself with the tannins in it is already a kind of mordant so - let's just skip that part. 😺Kelly
So when you say 50 cents you mean 50p as you live in uk yes? I often order from the works as I can’t look in my nearest one due to no lift and the craft being upstairs and me using a wheelchair. Some charity shops will sell damaged books for a small donation rather than tearing up reasonable books etc.
Hi Adelia. Yes, I live in Swansea and I got the scrapbook pads at The Works. How crazy that they do not have a lift on a two-floor shop! That is the worst. I regularly use my local charity shops (Oxfam has a 99p rail) but there are many reasons why I cut up otherwise "reasonable" books. They are not intrinsically valuable and very often would have been binned or pulped. This way I can turn them into pieces that will be loved and used, another life. I hope you have a creative week! Kelly

Hi Lena, isn't it funny how we learn by these happy accidents? 😺
Thank you for this, Kelly. Cannot wait to hear about your trip. Please share. ❤

Sharing! That is what I like to hear. I hope you made some fun pages, Mai.
I tried out the sanding and wow does it ever work nice. However, next time I think I will do it out doors lol.
I tried it, too, and thought exactly the same thing! 😄
Kelly, you are going to the workshop with a beautiful journal. I love your paper choices and the cover is wonderful. The tea dyed papers came out so well. How heavy are the papers that you used? Wishing you a wonderful workshop experience.
Hi Helene. The papers are mostly watercolour papers that are about 90 lb or 200 gsm. Hope that helps! Kelly
