Well this is embarrassing, in a good way. I guess. I have had a boatload of requests for the Book of You online class on how to make and keep an illustrated journal. So I am making this course live again. If you are interested you can find out more and buy it here: kelly-s-school-b1d1.thinkific.com/courses/the-book-of-you-making-and-keeping-a-visual-diary
Have told friends who like the journals I do that there is a lady in Wales that has ruined me !! She taught how to make a small book by folding and cutting..It works so well that I make those instead of doing the more complex spines ! Again thank you for the tutorial! I'm also very jealous of your travels!!
Why Susan, what a lovely message. Now, now, making simple books just means you have more time to try those intricate spines (but the older I get the less I am tempted to learn how to do one well but that's just me).😺😺
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Never have I seen so many useful tips and techniques in one video! I’m totally inspired to jump right in. Hopefully you’ll share your journal when you return. Have a wonderful trip.
Why thank you, Jennifer. It took me ages to shorten my own learning curve so I am truly happy to be able to share and do the same for other makers making. I hope you make your own gorgeous pages. Keep me posted! Kelly
I was so happy when I saw you had a new video. And, better yet, almost an hour long. I just enjoyed every minute. Have a grand time in Italy! We all look forward to seeing the fruits of your adventure. ❤
Thank you, Trixie. My work space is a mix of high quality art supplies I saved up for - and free stuff, some of it even from trash picking! It is fun to find and use treasure from the unexpected. 🎨🎨
I don’t know if you’re already in Italy, if you are, enjoy it, I went there in 1992 and I would love to go back one day. I absolutely loved Florence. These are amazing ideas and I truly feel inspired to try some of these great techniques. On a personal note, I would like to tell you that, as I had a really bad 2023, I decided to follow your piece of advice and write my resolutions for the New Year for the first time in my life. I wrote 10, which was great for me, and I wrote them on the 31st December, because it had the special meaning of the end of the year. My year was so bad, because I allowed my stepmother to ruin it and I thought I had to remind myself that my life should be about me and not about her, in spite of the consequences, which may be seeing less of my father. But, well, he has the power to choose. Thank you, enjoy your trip and be well 💙♥️🧡💛🖤💜💗💚❤️
Dear Alexandra, thank you for your message. Now listen, you have done a very powerful thing. You are consciously choosing your life and what is right for you over what someone else would put in its place. Write and write and write and you will see patterns and your way will become clearer even if that clearer way may seem painful but - there may be a third or fourth or hundredth way for things to turn out. Expect these, make room for them (writing helps with this, too) and Go Forward. Please write me and let me know how it turns out. I believe in you. 🌻🌼🌷Kelly
This year my crafting life goal is to not throw out paper but make them into junk journals - I save money by not buying notebooks/journals and I also save paper going to the landfill. Great video by the way and thanks for the tips and inspiration 😊
I could not agree more. I am also trying to waste less and less and it is really good fun to find ways to turn potential landfill into free art supplies. Oh, and you can also add thick coats of gesso (and not just the splotchy layers) to glossy paper for drawing and lettering. A good way to make that glossy paper more practical. Keep me posted on your journals! Kelly
I have just recently found your channel and am devouring the videos! Thank you for giving away so much inspiration for free. I'm a frequent traveler and love what you said about not getting in the way of others trying to enjoy the sights too. It baffles me how so many people walk around beautiful spaces but only view it through their phones, trying to capture videos. I've had people walk right into me. We are road tripping to South Dakota soon and I'm going to make an art journal for the trip. Thanks again for your knowledge sharing and creativity!
Hi Jeny. I remember going to a cathedral in Paris where during the flipping mass, you know, prayers and stuff, people walked with selfie sticks and just started snapping. I was there as a tourist myself but dang, have some respect. Enjoy South Dakota. It sounds like an amazing place for sketching and making. If you check out my playlists you will there is one that is dedicated to tutorials for travel journals. Hope this helps! Kelly
Oh, I can’t believe how much I’ve learned in this video! I’ve gone back into some of my sketchbooks, and I am embellishing pages with your great ideas. Buon viaggio in Italia!
Why Sue, that is truly, really one of the nicest comments I have EVER had. I kind of fear that a little bit of my videos goes a long way but - maybe I will think about posting more. Thank you, my dear, and happy new year! Kelly
Me too! But I decided to make one of these small journals that I can use to “learn” the process over the next 4 months before jumping in to my beautiful new Seven Seas Crossfields journal on January 1, 2025
thanks for showing the effect of waterbrush on the pastels! new idea, will give it a shot. I have decided to make a notebook out of waste Paper bags that vegetables come wrapped in. looking forward to it 😊
What a great trip for you! Will be collecting ephemera for new boxes? I opened my ephemera box at Christmas. What lovely items, the paper is amazing. Thank you again.
Hi there, Donna. Thank you for your kind words. I am always looking for The Good Stuff and I have a list of second hand shops including an antiquarian book sale that happens every Thursday but it's too early in the year for flea markets so the pickings may be slim. I'll keep you posted! Wish me luck. Kelly
Ooooolala!! What an amazing video and a really nice and LONG one! I loved every single minute of this one Kelly! You shared some fascinating techniques! Loved the styrafoam with gesso to lighten the magazine type face, and the shaved soft charcoal with a wee bit of water, just to name a few that come to mind! And at first, I wanted you to use that wonderful corrugated cardboard your son had sent a gift in....until I saw your eco prints! Hands down, the better choice! Yea! I guess this will have to tide us over, until you get back again. Have a fabulous adventure, and I cannot wait to see your journal upon your return.
Hi Becky. Thanks for getting in touch. My art supplies are a firm mix of the best I can afford while staying in my price range AND all of the free stuff all around us. Zero waste means tins of free art supples. Happy Making! Keep me posted on how the ecoprinting comes out.
What a great video that I will be watching again. So many techniques in one video! I love that you take risks on camera and try things that might not work…wow. Also, your camera’s mic does a perfect job of modulating between your voice and the glorious rustle of the papers (which really inspires me). Have a wonderful time in Italy! 🇮🇹
I'm so excited for you and your trip. I missed seeing your postings and look forward to your sharing this trip with me. Never been to Italy but have been to Europe twice. Ireland and Greece. Trips of a lifetime for me. Stay healthy and safe.
Why thank you, Theresa. I got distracted by enjoying doing nothing over the holidays. Those trips do sound special - I would love to see Greece. I've been looking forward to seeing Ravenna for many years and I am so, so excited.
Love it! Good idea with using the polystyrene and gesso printing. Looks almost dendritic. We have a lovely collection of large bags and wrapping/packaging after Christmas so I will be using some of those. Also I was thinking about using some of my dyed papers for a journal - I love the informality of this style. Going to watch the leaves cover video now. What a lovely way to start 2024. Thanks.
Thank you, Pat. Yes, when you use gesso or acylic paint on the strofoam is "pulls" and makes a lot of tendril-like texture, almost like a stucco. Left-over papers are the best. I hope you make a gorgeous journal. Keep me posted! Kelly
What a wonderful video full of amazing techniques, as always. Loved the tea bag mending on the document page. What dreamy paper sounds too! ❤ Have a safe and fabulous trip! Gilly
Hello from New Mexico- Thank you for your great instructions- you spoke of taking a texture class and that you would link it. Am I 'overseeing' it? If so, please point out, yes? Your frugal printing tip is brilliant! Sending you greetings, smiles and sunshine!
Hi Marion. Thanks for the sunshine as I live in Wales and I love this place but it does rain about 320 days a year. Here is the link to two texture courses. The one by Jane Chipp is the one I've done and really like. The other one on Jeanne Oliver's platform is one I bought as a treat and haven't started yet. Keep me posted and let me know if you try them. Kelly www.janechippsart.school/p/textural-reverence-journal-course-by-jane-chipp jeanneoliver.com/courses/textural-minimalism/
Such a clever girl nice one enjoy your hols & look forward to seen your book finished enjoy your travels & have a fab time & most good new year a head peter Scotland 😊xxxx
Bologna! I did nearly the same tour by train last September ending in Ravenna and Faenza. I loved Bologna's colonades and it's colours and the mosaics of Ravenna are just stunning! Make sure you have some spaghetti al ragu in Bologna. The best Spaghetti Bolognese you will ever have. Enjoy your trip!
This was such a great video and very enjoyable and inspiring to watch. Love seeking out old magazines and even old music sheets at my local thrift. Thank you for this video. Enjoy your trip.
Hi there. Yes, a thrift store or library book sale are the best. It's all about keeping our eyes open and seeing the good stuff that is there. I hope you have a Happy and Creative New Year!
Thanks, Kelly, for a new video...always such a treat! I adore this journal and I adore in advance what you'll do with it 🤗 A big thank you as well for some more soft pastel tips and tricks. I'm still rubbish at using them but hope for a breakthrough one of these days 😅 Have a blast in Italy and look forward to your next video xx
Hi Sandra. The great thing about being rubbish with soft pastels is that they are way more affordable than some stuff and you can take a chance, take lots of chances. I am going to do more about using the powder for magic when I get back but in the meantime, have fun with it! Kelly
Have a wonderful time on your trip! Hopefully your husband is tagging along. Look forward to the possibility of videos while on your trip anf the look forward to a flip through of this journal! Happy New Year! 💙💚💙
I’m pretty sure that yes, you would absolutely use your gelli plate. 😅 They are addictive. And once you get your materials organized for a printing session, you just start churning out stacks of prints. But warning: You’ll find yourself lusting after more paints, more stencils, more kinds of paper to print on.
Ha. Maybe art supplies should come with a warning, the way cigarettes do. I am going to be in the states next week. Does Michael's still do coupons? Maybe I could get one that way.
Love this so much. Thank you for your expertise and inspiration. Wishing you a wonderful trip that inspires you and makes the return to your studio delightful.
This is the first video I watched by you. I love the scrappy style using found paper! Thanks for the multiple tips on adding marks snd splotches do they are not plain. I am going to New Mexico next month so I will make a journal like this to take! ❤️🙂
Hello and welcome, Matthew. Thanks for this thoughtful message. New Mexico always sounds like one of the places where you can find natural earth pigments to add to your splotches and mark making - although I could also be making that up as I have never been to that part of the country. 😺But make and take a visual diary. They're the best. Kelly
I'm about halfway through watching this video and I have learned so much already, thank you! A question- I'm concerned about using vinegar in my journal. I'm worried it might damage the adjacent pages, turn blotchy over time, or do something else not good. It's been about 5 months since you applied it, how's it holding up? Thanks for sharing so many unique ideas with us!
Hi Buffy. I can't remember using vinegar but that doesn't mean I didn't - my brain cells go on strike sometimes. I can say that I WOULD use it with confidence. Perhaps it might "turn" after a few years but I think it is unlikely. I hope this helps! Kelly
While pastel powder is not as dramatic as Brusho crystals they are cheaper and easier to find and you can still do lots of stuff with it. Give it a try! Thanks for your kind words. Kelly
enjoy the trip, dear Kelly, also Happy New Year! (I must pen a comment because here in Singapore thrift store books go for $3 and I went "OUCHIE" at the point of video when you mentioned getting yours for 50pence, argh we're being fleeced!!!)
Hi Henrietta. I know exactly what you mean! I bought this magazine in France and the thrift store there was cheap, cheap, cheap but where I live here in Wales they are sometimes $5 or more. Not surprisingly, they are slow to sell but I keep my eyes open whenever I am on the road and used books are in my price range. 😂😂
Thank you, Karen. I am a very lucky woman. I have wanted to see this part of the world for several years and it is finally coming true. Sketches will be made! And thank you for your kind words - they mean more to me than I can say. Here's hoping you have a Happy and Creative New Year. Kelly
So beautiful! I’m inspired to start a new art journal! Also a little jealous about Italy 🇮🇹. Would love to go sometime as it’s part of my heritage. 😊 Have a wonderful trip Kelly! ❤
Found out that the leaves of an avocado tree also make a beautiful blush pink dye. Easy to prep the pits for planting and before you know it dead leaves fall off to make room for the new ones
How cool! I have to say that I live in a cold climate and Wales is not known for its avocado trees but if I ever see one in my travels I will try to forage a few leaves and try this.
Are you, by any chance, going to visit the Ulisse Aldrovandi herbarium at the University of Bologna, Botanical Garden and Herbarium?? I have spent some time not too far from where you will be: Salsomaggiore Terme, Reggio Emilia, Colorno. Can't wait to hear about your trip and see you journal!! I plan to make one of these type journals as soon as I return home.
I tell you what. Have a look at this playlist. It has tons of videos about working in blank books. Keep me posted! ruclips.net/p/PLWir7hWgZLNA0nBJh3p6k5szPtuyvaCMW
Hi, today I saw a few of your amazing video's for the first time. You make beautifull things and I like the way you explained. Thank you so much. Lots of love❤
Well hello and welcome, Monica. Thank you for this lovely message. It really does make me happy. Stay tuned for some more journal cheerleading coming this weekend. 🌷🌼🌻Kelly
Thanks 4 your videos...I live in Florence so can immagine your trip to italy very well😅...you sead you were going to put a link to the online class you were taking. Could you give it please ? I love learning..🙏
Florence? Oh Nicole, how heavenly. Here is the course I am taking on creating textures and I LOVE it. Keep me posted on what you think! Kelly www.janechippsart.school/p/textural-reverence-journal-course-by-jane-chipp
Hi there. Thanks for touching base! Try this. The shop name is bookandpaperarts: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BookandPaperArts?ref=shop-header-name&listing_id=1180173294&from_page=listing
Hi Connie. You can find the recipe here, along with three other botanical inks, in my online class. Onion skins are also great for mark making and eco printing. Happy making! Kelly kelly-s-school-b1d1.thinkific.com/collections
Hi Kel…I’m trying so hard to just keep watching, bot be a buttinsky - but 9 minutes in and I gotta say I LOVE THE IDEA of this travel journal…and Italy 🤍🤍🤍 I love your life 🥰. Heading over to your Instagram….
Hello there, Cheryl. Great to have you back. The last couple of trips I made, I was so busy (in a good way) that I didn't make time to order a new sketchbook and this time I thought - darn it, I do make books for a living, what am I waiting for? And I love how it turned out. Thanks bunches! (And stay turned for my next travel to the glamourous land of - Mississippi. Journals will be kept there, too!)
Well this is embarrassing, in a good way. I guess. I have had a boatload of requests for the Book of You online class on how to make and keep an illustrated journal. So I am making this course live again. If you are interested you can find out more and buy it here:

Bought it after watching your video from 8/31/24. Very excited!

Why thank you, Chere. And thanks for the vote of confidence on the longer video. That's good feedback and I am listening. Happy New Year!
Love your frugal ideas! This messy look is Wonderful!
Thank you, Trixie. My work space is a mix of high quality art supplies I saved up for - and free stuff, some of it even from trash picking! It is fun to find and use treasure from the unexpected. 🎨🎨
"Im not going to throw paper away, do you think im crazy?!?" haha that made me chuckle!! i love your tutorials!!
Thank you, Sara. This is truly nice to hear and makes me so happy. 🌷🌻🌼Kelly
🌻🌼🌷Kelly

Agree! Me too
Love it, girl! Hope you had a great trip!
Thank you, Sue. It was a special time filled with so much beauty that I have yet to take it all in. Journals help with that, though. 😺
Oh, I can’t believe how much I’ve learned in this video! I’ve gone back into some of my sketchbooks, and I am embellishing pages with your great ideas. Buon viaggio in Italia!
Grazie! I hope you make great pages, Hilary. 🌷🌻🌼
My only complaint about you is that you don't do enough videos! I'm getting ready to start on my "Book of Me" at the New Year.
Why Sue, that is truly, really one of the nicest comments I have EVER had. I kind of fear that a little bit of my videos goes a long way but - maybe I will think about posting more. Thank you, my dear, and happy new year! Kelly
And go, go, go on that illustrated journal of your everyday life. You will not be sorry.
@@BookandPaperArts Happy New Year to you as well! This is a "scary" adventure I'm embarking upon, but I'm looking forward to it.
Me too! But I decided to make one of these small journals that I can use to “learn” the process over the next 4 months before jumping in to my beautiful new Seven Seas Crossfields journal on January 1, 2025
The Italy trip sounds so interesting your travel journn will be absolutely fabulous!
Thank you for sharing so many wonderful techniques for creating a fun and loose journal!
Hi Anne, It is my real pleasure. Thanks for touching base!
thanks for showing the effect of waterbrush on the pastels! new idea, will give it a shot. I have decided to make a notebook out of waste Paper bags that vegetables come wrapped in. looking forward to it 😊
I love to use cardboard like this also but I’ve never used it as a cover! Great idea! I love the eco prints also!
It's time to make this year's batch of leaf eco prints. I just make a huge old bunch in one go and they last for the year.
What a great trip for you! Will be collecting ephemera for new boxes?
I opened my ephemera box at Christmas. What lovely items, the paper is amazing. Thank you again.

I love that you take risks on camera and try things that might not work…wow.
Also, your camera’s mic does a perfect job of modulating between your voice and the glorious rustle of the papers (which really inspires me). Have a wonderful time in Italy! 🇮🇹
Ha. I was listenimg to the papers rustle and wondering if it might be too much. As if such a thing is possible!
I'm so excited for you and your trip. I missed seeing your postings and look forward to your sharing this trip with me. Never been to Italy but have been to Europe twice. Ireland and Greece. Trips of a lifetime for me. Stay healthy and safe.

Love this art journal! I need to make one for myself! Oh, I am excited to see some of your trip! Love all of your tips!
Hi Susan. I hope you make a book for yourself. It's easy and they are addictive - but inexpensive and not fattening. Win win win!
Beautiful journal, have a great trip! Look forward to seeing your journal after the trip!
Thank you, Kimberly. Churches will be sketched and sat in and I strongly suspect pastry will be eaten. 😍

Hi Buffy. I can't remember using vinegar but that doesn't mean I didn't - my brain cells go on strike sometimes. I can say that I WOULD use it with confidence. Perhaps it might "turn" after a few years but I think it is unlikely. I hope this helps! Kelly
I enjoyed listening to your calming voice… this is a very good video!! Thx you!! ❤
😺Why thank you, Michelle. It is always weird to hear our own voices on a playback so thanks for the vote of confidence.
wow! i LOVE that onion skin ink! its fab!!!!
Thank you, Sara. I make this stuff over and over. The colour is almost copper. Cheap, easy to make, and gorgeous. 😺
I love love love this video, and your journal, and the tipp with the selfmade brushos (I will give them a try) ❤️
I wish you a great time on holiday.
So cool and I can't wait to see highlights of your trip!
Glad i found you 😊
Why thank you, Anne. It is good to be found. Happy making!
Beautiful! Thank you! I hope you show us what you do with it!
Patti, I am going to try. Packing my portable tripod so we'll see how it goes!
Have a great trip and a happy new year🎉
Thank you, Birgit. I hope you have and happy and creative new year, too! Kelly
I love this Kelly just what I need! Have a great trip to Italy💚green for envy 😂 You are such an artist and such an inspiration. Karen xx
Thank you, Karen. I am a very lucky woman. I have wanted to see this part of the world for several years and it is finally coming true. Sketches will be made! And thank you for your kind words - they mean more to me than I can say. Here's hoping you have a Happy and Creative New Year. Kelly
❤ wow. So beautyfull already. Have a nice trip
So beautiful! I’m inspired to start a new art journal! Also a little jealous about Italy 🇮🇹. Would love to go sometime as it’s part of my heritage. 😊 Have a wonderful trip Kelly! ❤
Thank you so. I have wanted to see Ravenna for many years now and can hardly believe it is happening. And go, go, go with that new art journal!
sooo refreshing to watch ... thank you
Why thank you, Freda. I've never thought of it as refreshing but well, why shouldn't it be?🤔 Thanks for touching base! Kelly
Oh I learned so much. Your art is wonderful 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉. Thank You 💕
Oh thank you, Madra. That is truly nice to hear. 🌷🌻🌼
Gorgeous!
Thank you so!
A wonderful video, thank you.
Love that cover!!!
Thank you, Melanie. I make a batch every fall and they last through most of the year for covers and whatnot.
So Excellent!! 💓🇨🇦
Thank you, Sonya!
Well I am now! And we can work on making that journal together, online or in person.
Thank you! I make journals like this, but never sure what to do with them. 1:37 :)
I tell you what. Have a look at this playlist. It has tons of videos about working in blank books. Keep me posted!

I would be interested in knowing how to make ink from onion skins.
Hi Connie. You can find the recipe here, along with three other botanical inks, in my online class. Onion skins are also great for mark making and eco printing. Happy making! Kelly
