Easy Handmade Blank Book: No Sewing, No Gluing Slit Book

  • Today we will be making a slit book, a handmade art journal that is easy - no sewing or gluing at all - versatile, and supercheap - you can get started for nothing or for a few pennies. Which means you can get up and running and making these easy blank books and art journals in minutes.
The least amount you need to start are three pieces of paper. In the first part of the tutorial I show you how to make your book and then show some of the techniques I used to turn this into a fun, messy, distressed in a full-blown, messy distressy art journal.
You can use notebook or copier paper if that's what you got especially if you are only writing or using dry media but if you have something heavier that's even better. A heavier paper will stand up to wet media, gluing, and some chunking up.

I wish I could thumb up this video each time I rewatch it. I think every kid with access to paper should be taught to make these as soon as they can understand the instructions, before they can even use scissors! I would have LOVED to be able to make a little art book for myself whenever the whim hit me. Paper grocery bag to art journal in moments and no fear of not being "good enough" and wasting good paper. I wonder where I would be in life right now without that fear. I'm off to make one for myself to find out! 😂

Why thank you. This really does make my day and it is lovely to hear/read. Boy I know what you mean: I was raised poor and books and art supplies were considered luxuries and if I had only known that scrap paper and bags could be both art and books! It is one of the reasons why - while I do sell through my videos I also try to offer free content and ideas for free resources. We should all be able to create no matter what our budgets. As for "not being good enough". Trust me when I tell you that this is the single most common thing I have to start with in teaching adults. Kids know there are good enough to draw and paint - it is only adults who feel they have to earn the right to mess up a blank book for the first time. Happy making! Kelly

I was feeling very lost without my laptop that died on me but hubby came to my rescue and lets me use his. I was watching your video via tv so I cannot comment. I had to try this!!! surprisingly it came out great and now I am off to try to make it with brown paper. Like yourself, I have not seen a paper bag in 14 years!! (when we moved and retired!). No bags are offered and if you forget to bring your own bag, then you walk away with your purchase in your hands or buy a plastic bag for $2.00! I still have a roll of Kraft brown paper and this will be the perfect project to use it! I have been binging watching your videos mostly because it is snowing ice pellets and too icy to walk! Thanks for all your great videos and it was a very easy choice to click the like button as well as subscribing to your site.

This made me smile. I am so pleased this one went over big. I do love projects you can do on the road or if you run out of fancy supplies. I hoard brown paper like a Depression-era housewife and love finding ways to play with it. I also have the Kraft paper and sometimes it comes in parcels as packing material and it gets rolled up and goes in the stash. Stay warm and safe! Kelly

I do reuse them as bags, use them as free art supplies and recycle when they are no longer good for anything else, but STILL TOO MANY BAGS! Probably enough bags in my closet to provide free art supplies for all of Wales!

I love the phrase "up and making". Sort of an artist "battle cry" or a team's "on three" yell before the big game. A mantra, an intention, an affirmation, a three word meditation.
You've packed a ton of inspiration into this video. Your page layouts are incredible. Like a magician, you create beauty out of a collection of paints and papers. A kind of slight of hand as if producing something from "thin air" that leaves the audience dumbstruck.
Your reminder to. "Use what you have" is permission--even a challenge-- to be creative and be magician too. Thank you Kelly.

Oh, I have no complaining about the length or content of your videos! On the contrary, I hang on to your every word and bask in the glowing illumination of the techniques you share as you create your art. But your remark about changing RUclips expectations explains why I am becoming increasingly annoyed and growing less impressed with a lot other RUclips channel's videos lately. I now know why there's more inane chatter and demonstating repeatedly and slowly how to ink every single scrap of paper on camera while making a junk journal page for example. Your videos are the exception and remain favorites.

Exactly, Alexandra. I am having fun with carrying a little book on my travels along with my chunky book. Then I can take the little one in my bag and add it to a pocket in the chunky one. I am also making some tiny books, about 5cm x 5cm to see how much messy good stuff I can get in there! Kelly

Kelly, You've basically just done a video showcasing the bulk of my art practice! Making small blank books is totally where it's at for me, since the larger and many-paged sketchbooks are a little intimidating for me at this stage (though I have many of these books, oh boy, do I ever). 😂 I love this binding type though, which *is new to me! I'll be trying it pronto on some brown paper I obtained (free) recently when I purchased some imperial sheets at my local store (the brown paper they use for wrapping). I have a book of about 8 sheets, so I guess I'll do 4 slit one way, and 4 slit the other way.💕🤯

Kelly Question. I took your idea for the slit book and combined it with your simple drawing and writing in a journal, your car, the wonton and your hat. I put together a class as a volunteer with reuse paper and tools for senior citizens. I credited you and receive no compensation for teachingborbfor supplies. I used brown paper grocery bags for the covers and 14 x 8.5 copy paper for the inside. My question is this. Can I have a brown paper drontband back cover with white sheets inside. I keep coming up with one brown front but the back is white. The briwn back cover I expected is mixed in with the white papers. Is there a solution or is this not possible? I have 2 professional artists and and 3 newbies to drawing. Than you.

@BookandPaperArts We're on the same page. It's like herding cats. One actual cut the paper into thirds. One of two professional artists. The new to drawing trio got it. Simple drawings but great stories that went with the drawings. Patience, patience, just breathe is new motto. Many thanks for testing even if it doesn't work. If this class succeeds I have a once a month group set up. People pay $2 to Lifelong for overhead and called a social group to explore new ideas.
Introduce them to photos and collage. Just getting pencil to paper is the goal. Thank you for your encouragement. There are always plans C-Z. I live in Ithaca, New York in The FingerLakes.

@BookandPaperArts I think I have figured out why it doesn't work but need to test. The rolled part goes through the slit in the center to the outside but the paddle part stays in the center inside the journal. On to plan C. Then two who continued have written great stories to go with their drawings. One went to college amd lived in Bennington VT where the museum featuring Gramma Moses is located. Thank you for the inspiration.
