I started out reading your blog this morning…and have gone down the rabbit hole of Kelly! Watching one video after another and ready to chuck my paints and canvases and move into books and boiled pages!
Absolutely love this video. I find creating relaxing and helps with my mental health, but I’m not an artist. Here you’ve made it doable, thank you! Also love the antique and vintage papers you use. I love to watch your “what’s new in the studio” videos. You find some lovely things that I just drool over, lol.
Thank you, Joy. I have been told my voice is calming and to this I say, What the What??? I have a new "What's New" video coming soon - including handwritten papers from the 1600s! thanks for the vote of confidence. Have a lovely weekend! Kelly
@@BookandPaperArtsI enjoy watching some channels with lots of chatter, but I do like your "this is what I did and why" approach. I love the simplicity of your art.
Why thank you, Sue. It's tricky (but not impossible) to do chatter well so I just stick (mostly) to teaching and encouraging and then encouraging all of us to get off of the screen and go make stuff. I appreciate the vote of confidence! Kelly @@suelutz5364
So glad I found you. I'm participating in a few challenges this year and using art as a part of my self-care. I came across your idea of a "burner journal." I'm excited to write down my wildest dreams!
Hello and welcome, Jenny. In teaching journal and diary arts I am constantly having to help people get past their own inner critic and having dodged her, get meaningful stuff that can help us to transform on the page. Thanks for touching base and yes, go try that burner journal. You have nothing to lose but a couple of bucks and some ink. Keep me posted on how it goes! Kelly
so many great ideas, here. i especially like the way you made poppies from the eco print patterns. that was one of my favorite pages! thanks for your generosity.
Thank you, Alice. That is truly nice to here! I am really getting into making abstract blotches with ink or paint then drawing over and into them when they are dry (a little bit about this in the link below). And you? ruclips.net/video/vivbCYG2vXI/видео.html
Love that little booklet so so cute 😍 that is a very good point giving the receiver some room to write or add images themselves. The roses are my favourite 💕
Why thank you, Blanche. When I teach workshops in my studios, the first (and second and on and on) thing I tell people is to be bold. Give yourself permission to let it be simple. Hope you make some gorgeous things!
As always, brilliant! I love all of these ideas, Kelly. And, of course, i love how you present your techniques. I have signed up for your newsletter several times and still don't get them. 😢 I'm going to try again and crossed all my body parts. i love the idea of having a course this fall teaching more if your techniques. You go, Girl!💗
I really like these techniques. I’m currently working on a journal for my daughter in law and I’m going to try some of these techniques. Beautiful! I just bought another ephemera pack from you…I just couldn’t help myself! LOL. The first items I received from you are so incredible and really are an inspiration for me to just create! Thank you for sharing!!
Great ideas, Missy! These were fun and I really liked the pops of red, poppies! Beautiful, fun! Thanks Kelly. I'm looking foreword to this Sundays newsletter from you!
Thank you, Lynn. I need to get my rear end in gear and start drafting the thing. It always takes ages and I have to make myself stay in the chair as I would be rather be altering something. 😁
@@BookandPaperArts I totally understand! Like having to do frickin' homework, when you want to be outside playing!! BUT, you are a terrific writer Kelly, and we all look foreword to seeing your newsletters! Thank you in advance! ;)
@@lynnparise9841 Golly, thanks, Lynn. I used to be a journalist, back in the day, and wrote a book. Long out of print but I tried. And more and more I am hoping to use the newsletter for writing more of my own stuff, folding in little by little.
Lovely ideas Kelly. I started tearing out pages and glueing pages in my first altered book yesterday, using your techniques. Online course sounds great.
Hey hey, that's so cool, Nicola. Would love to see what you make in your altered book! I am working on a new one and the spine just broke in two after ten days of prepping and I COULD JUST SCREAM but instead I will see if I can mend it. Fingers crossed. 😉
This is great! I have done the stencils before with ink, but I am a bit intimidated with paint, but what you did does not scare me! it inspires me. I will let you know how it goes. Thank you.
Oh yes, please keep me posted, Ann. Would love to hear how it works for you. If you look at my video on working with stencils (if you are curious, that is), I show a ton of techniques: some are scarier than others.😁 (Link is in the text above.)
@@BookandPaperArts Hello Again! I had great success with the 3 pieces I worked on. I used oil pastels and a book page to make the pretty yellow flowers, and they look great. Then in 2 phases, I did the acrylic flowers and the water colored flowers. They both came out beautifully. I stayed pretty true to your instruction and I plan to do more, and perhaps do some from my own imagination based on your techniques. Thank you so much! I rewatched the videos you posted the links to, and loved them, and have watched a lot of your older ones, so lots more experimentation to come. I appreciate the encouragement!
@@annwaddell7321 Hi Ann. This is so exciting. Your flowers sound very cool and yes, you are quite right the next step is you make the style your own. This is what I do: learn a technique by copying the original artist, then start looking at flowers in books and real ones in the garden (and yeah, on Pinterest, too 😁) then try my version of them on cheapo paper until I get something that really pops. So, go get 'em!
@@BookandPaperArts More news! I am working on a project for family members which is sort of a journal focused on their life. There is a section about their house, and one about their garden. Last night I made a flip out of the water color that I did, with a collage of gardens on the back, and under it will be some photos of their own garden. It's very exciting. Thanks for the technique and the inspiration!
@@annwaddell7321 Ann, I adore pull-outs and foldy things and inserts and pockets and surprises of all kinds. This journal sounds all kinds of charming.
Thanks for sharing these great tips and techniques Kelly. Look forward to the course. Wondering when you say boiled book, did you boil them all at once, different times, additives etc. Would love to see these too in a course.
Hi Pauline, I put all the pages together, added onion skins throughout and some rusty things, then tie them all together into a bundle. Then immerse in a rusty cast iron stock pot full of black tea. Simmer for a few hours. Then dry, but only after having dripped wet, rusty tea everywhere in your small flat. Hey presto, boiled book! (Thank you for the suggestion. I really, really want feedback and to know what people are curious about seeing. And hey, I am going to France in two weeks, so yippee!)
Whew! After you said something about not being sure of working on or over papers like these, you were my test to see if the techniques are tempting. Have a good, creative weekend, Susan. 🌷🌻🌼
It is by Rumi: "My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that. And I intend to end up there." Something that has been much on my mind as late. Reading about the mystics. Questioning reality. Ha. Hi Sue. It is a book that where the pages were put together then tied into a bundle then boiled (steamed, really) in a tea and rust bath. The pages look something like this: ruclips.net/video/On7YkHSvqKU/видео.html They are quite easy to make once you get the knack and are very dramatic.
