      They are going to make more modifiers with node, columns wont work for more modifiers, thats simply not scalable as menu, and scond of all you just type your modifier after clicking on add, just start freaking typing, first letters of modifiers name, With shade smooth I think they are still working on changing it so it could be capable of distinguish between shade smooth edges and points or sth like that. Columns in manu never realy worked for usual blender as UI no color distinguishing, tiny icons where I alaways had to rememeber where some modifier was with good few seconds, now I just type after clicking on + 2 first characters are usualy enough. Still 4.1 is sort off transition stadium anyway, 4.2 should be more polished. Edit: also in 4.1 you can add autosmooth (smooth by angle) as modifier already I'm just not sure if it's fully finished yet.

    I got used to the new Modifier menu. I just added mostly used modifiers on the Quick access menu and it is working fine now. I think the reason why they did that is if you add a lot of geometry nodes type modifiers in the future you will be able to organize it into new menus. It does make sense and hopefully it will work for better in the end. Just look at modifier list in Max for example, there are so many of them that you need to scroll down forever to get to some, so what I usually do I always organize it into subcategories to be able to access it in a more organized way.

      Coping with a cumbersome menu by using your quick favourites proves the point that it's cumbersome, Blender menus contextual pop-ups seem to be allergic to actually using your screen's real estate, they could've preserved the old menu while also adding custom node based modifier categories under it, and maybe keep the search bar on top.
      It doesn't take a genius to figure out this was a step backwards in UX

    I like the new modifier menu because I don't go through the categories, searching for what I need, but instead I just use the search bar. The search bar saves me so much time. The old modifier menu didn't have a search bar, so it was really slow to find the modifier you need. I like the new menu, and I hope they don't change it back. Or if they do change it back, they at least keep its search bar.

    I’m new to blender (around 2 months) and I always type the modifier I want since it’s so convenient and fast. To think that before you had to manually find the modifier you wanted is crazy to me. I personally love the new search feature and never actually manually click on a modifier unless I’m toying around to see what they do.

    • @Aiduss
      @Aiduss Год назад +4

      Well im working in blender like more than 10 years (ex 3Ds Max user) and this new search system only makes working slower just because more steps are involved to get what you need. So i can tell for sure it's not faster than it was - they made it worse. Usually im not complaining but this indeed is horrible step in wrong direction.

  • @SlayerDUDE1993
    @SlayerDUDE1993 Год назад +2

    unpopular opinion here. I actually prefer the new way of adding modifiers, because I had hard time searching for some of them by eye and clicking on the add modifier button and typing the name of the needed modifier is really easy for me. The most common of them I add to quick fav menu which I use every time.

    • @btn237
      @btn237 Год назад

      The old modifier menu was awful - it was inconsistent with everywhere else in blender. I like you would not know where to click for modifiers I’d used hundreds of times.
      They should have done a much better job of onboarding people though - no one knows about the search thing, which is undeniably amazing.
      When they change a longstanding feature, all it requires is a tooltip on the new blender version that pops up and says ‘hey’ this is where this thing has moved to and here’s how it’s supposed to work.

  • @MisterFrodo
    @MisterFrodo Год назад +2

    I agree that change to the modifier menu is so annoying. I only really started using blender about 2 years ago and it sucks that not long after I finally get a really good workflow figured out they made this change. Now I've gotta stop and pause for a few seconds before I remember where whatever modifier I'm looking for is at. Hopefully they change it back or at the very least have a toggle in the menu to switch it. Thank you for showing a way to get the old menu back. That's going to be super helpful

      Search, sir…

  • @Arjjacks
    @Arjjacks Год назад +5

    This is just . . . a bad video. Which is surprising from one of the Blender Bros. This whole rant is just poorly researched and badly done. Having a meltdown over unfinished features in a very early alpha is just incredibly silly and makes you look as much. Auto smooth is getting turned into a geometry node preset that'll be automatically added with the shade smooth by angle. But it needs to shade every surface smooth and then mark all the edges with a sharpness attribute first, which can then be passed into the node tree.
    Complaining about the new modifier menu is even sillier. There's no way in hell the old menu could accommodate the hundreds of new geometry node presets that are coming. It's just not feasible. The new one you don't even have to click anything at all, just mouse over the area, hit shift-A, start typing, and hit enter. Piece of cake.

    As a modeler first, the auto smoothing feature being turned into a modifier is the single most annoying thing in this update and feels like it is enough to make me want to stay on 3.6 or at the very least go no further than the 4.0 version.

  • @ZeroDean
    @ZeroDean Год назад +10

    The new modifier menu forced me to learn to use quick search. Which works great in most cases when you know the name of what you're looking for. But the new menu obviously makes things so much slower when you're not 100% sure and have to search multiple drop downs for it.
    And yes, some of the default settings are nonsensical... But that goes beyond just bevels and into *lots* of other things (samples, default geometry size, UI options...) which make things more of a hindrance until you understand what's going on and why to fix it.

    Having been spending the past few days learning Houdini (for the simulation operations) I think the new modifier menu is to emulate the way Houdini’s workflow is. Because in Houdini you hit tab and immediately start typing the operator you want to use. Problem is YOU HAVE TO KNOW what you want to call up. Blender doesn’t need it because the workflow is organised so much better IME. I’m loving Houdini but it feels clunky in the legacy kind of way compared to Blender 3.5+ which feels like a more organic workflow. That being said Houdini is insanely powerful and I’m loving the way the sims are thought out.

    • @nubnubbud
      @nubnubbud Год назад +9

      it's so they didn't need to waste future time on maintaining a completely unique menu for that exact feature and no others. they were wasting time maintaining super old code to work with evolving lists, features, and operators to keep it the way it was. yes they know it's annoying. yes there's a hundreds-posts-long discussion on the devchat about it, and they're looking for a better way, but for now, they're using a standard drop-down menu because unlike the other one, fixes for those apply to it, and your geometry nodes (even the ones you register in an assets folder in other files) will be able to show up there. users couldn't even agree on how they wanted the old one to include geometry nodes.

    They changed the modifier menu because it is more extensible as they add new modifiers this way. The old modifier menu was starting to fill up on certain rows. If you're used to working in blender you should be using the search at the top anyway, you only need to type in the first few letters of the modifier's name to get it.

    I think devs are all on trip from version 4, and actually challenging themselves who can think of more idiotic change. I have 4.0 and seeing 4.1 is even worse, i feel like it’s about time to learn Maya because soon 3.x LTS won’t be LTS anymore

    The new modifier menu has a search section that makes it much faster to find modifiers. If you don't know how to use it, it's not Blender's fault. Just learn how to use it!

      @btn237 Год назад

      Don’t quite agree, the new feature is amazing BUT the “you just need to learn how to use it” is a horrid attitude that needs to die.
      There’s a simple solution here when they change a longstanding feature to - onboard the users in the app.
      A tooltip when you open the modifier menu for the first time or the first few times to say ‘here’s what’s changed, here’s how you’re meant to use it’ would avoid all of the stress they’ve encountered by changing something and not explaining to anyone how it works.

    Blender is full of presets that are stupid choices. Seriously stupid choices. Like when I select a set of objects to export into an OBJ. for export into Substance Painter, the limit selection to only selected objects is unchecked. So I waste time selecting a whole goddamned scene into Substance Painter, which in a worst-case scenario can crash my computer. When I make a selection, guess what I wanna export? As an old school software designer, I would work from use-cases. Interview users or imagine myself being a user. Create software that takes the user by the hand and helps him along. You mention the Ocean modifier. Why don't you use it. Why, because it has a ton of conflicting parameters when I only need two! Either wavehight or windstrength and scale. And if I'm feeling masochistic, give me an advanced menu with the rest if you please. I hate the new modifier menu because it ads an extra click. For some cleaner looking panel?

    I really don't get why people complain so much about the modifier menu change.
    I honestly was vaguely overwhelmed by the huge list in four columns anyways, and it's so much easier to just use the now new search function to type out what modifier you actually want. I'm genuinely faster with the new menu than the old. Literally just type one letter and you likely already see the modifier in question.

  • @zinAab79

    Opening the modifier menu and looking all the list is beginner thing for me. When you know what you are going you don't even use the menu, you just type the name of the specific modifier you are going to use
