Every coach I had tried to get me to utilize the neutral grip, but it never worked for me. I wasted many years trying to make it happen because I thought, that was the grip all the best golfers used, especially Tiger Woods. I went to GolfTec, who are technique agnostic, and they said that in my case, I'm better off going back to a strong grip. With me, the problem with the neutral grip is that it promoted flipping at impact, and I tended to block right or slice on my misses, and it diminished my full club head speed potential. I suffered for years trying to cure a flip at impact and the resulting ballooning ball flight. Going back to a strong grip eliminated all that mess and I gained a more penetrating ball flight with slight draw and pretty much eliminated the dreaded slice. It also helped me get my hands ahead of ball at impact consistently to hit down on the ball better, resulting in more compression and better ball flight. I also learned that many big hitters on PGA Tour utilize a strong grip, like DJ, Rory, Bubba... Like putting, I believe grip is a very personal thing, and should not be taught as a standard technique. Neutral is probably a good starting point, but I think as you get better at the game, you should experiment with many different techniques.

me too. my grip , right hand is very strong.. to fight this , I open the club slightly so that the club will not at impact be pointing to the left... I get great flight , plenty of power and just a small draw at best .. mostly straight

This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. There is nothing wrong with a strong grip, it’s all about you as a golfer. In-fact as you say all the top players use a strong grip these days. This Ben hogan notion that PGA pros are schooled into that everyone should have a neutral grip is bollocks. You did waste time listening to these people mate. They do a pga course on the basis of golf being played years ago, old techniques & everything based off Ben Hogan. each golfer has a unique swing & you develops a grip that suits & feel comfy with that swing. You’re being told to have a neutral grip from people that are not Tour professional golfers, just someone telling you that you must have a neutral grip because it says so in a text book. I’ve never had a lesson in my life, got a mega strong grip & play off plus 2 & I bet I could beat this guy. Watch Robin Matthew Williams. He knows what he’s talking about. He said Golf is not as hard & technical like the PGA want you to believe so you spend 1000s on lessons & equipment. They will say you must be so far away from the ball at impact, your feet should be in a certain position, Need to keep your eyes fixed on the ball, backswing level to the target area etc. You don’t think about that nonsense during a golf swing. It’s all bull shit & when you realise it’s bull shit that’s when you get better. You don’t use a hammer with a neutral grip, it’s a strong grip & all that’s on your mind is hitting that nail flush. It’s exactly the same in golf.

Wasted 1 year finding out I am not a right handed golfer. Then wasted 3 years, having people tell me I had an incorrect, grip aka a "strong handed grip". My body kept fighting the mechanics of a neutral grip and it made me worse. Finally realized those people had no idea what they were talking. All I needed was some pointers on how to make my grip work for me, an easier feat then fixing my most basic instinct of holding the golf club.

Ah, my problem exactly. I never really concentrated on my right hand - just the left (I’m a right handed player). My problem is that when the club comes back to striking position, my club face is always closed and off to the left. I’ve been trying to remedy this by changing my left hand (which becomes really uncomfortable). I never thought that the problem was with the right hand. Good point. Thank you.

I have played golf for more than 30 years and never been able to progress lower than Handicap 16. Lately after a long lay-off due to illness, I adopted to playing with a very strong grip and it worked like a charm. My change was to swing with the body as the dominant force and the arms and wrist being the followers. On striking the ball, I find that my body seems to be a lot more open than what I used to do. It was quite relieving that I had to just remember to use my body and my hands would maneuver themselves to hit the ball. Gained 30 - 40 meters compared to my old grip. Even my short game somehow got better. Thank God!

You've perfectly described my current issue. I've been worrying about all the other stuff in my swing and hadn't noticed my right hand drifting back to a stronger position. Definitely been gripping from underneath recently. Back to basics and this video has fixed that issue and all the other bits of my swing have become much simpler and things are working more like they should.

Brilliant explanation of what happens and show the pulls left from strong left hand, all sort of action to save it and toe down strikes are my forte with this grip. The weaker right hand promotes a more natural and repeating, sweeping action, also improves lag and feel I find. Will hit more fades as you start and feels uncomfortable but stick with it and you won't go back.

With a strong left hand grip with right hand underneath it squares up your shoulders therefore hitting straighter shots or even a slight draw. Try setting up neutral then rolling right hand over, opens your shoulders wide open for a slice or pull shot.

Hi Michael. Little wonder you got a half of million hits with only few negative comments.
As for me it melds and mergers both my hands perfectly on the grip of my club and I now can confidently have a 6 to 7 grip pressure while allowing the wrists of both my hands to be a free agent reactive to my upper arms that includes my rip cage turning back and forth to swing my club. At 74 this grip of yours put a nice lid on my now perfect swing. Cheers

Personally, i had to strengthen my right hand because of a wrist injury. I went from weak to that strong grip you are explaining in your video. However, it really depends on how the club is positioned at the top of your swing. You can have a strong grip at address but if the club face is open at the top of the swing then it should be square at impact. For example, Zach Johnson has a very strong grip and it works for him. Also, David Duval had a very strong grip. In the end, it really doesn't matter the grip a golfer uses. It only matters how you are able to square the club face at impact.......consistently.

My handicap dropped from 18-20 to 6-8

  • @jbw749

I ended up here because I figured out just how important the right thumb position on the top of the grip at address is. At address the right thumb should be on top of the grip at about 1 o'clock and it stays there until the top of the swing where it feels like it's under the grip supporting the weight of the club as it sets. Get that correct and it results in much better path and face control coming down. Just that right thumb position can make or break a golf swing. It also makes the takeaway much easier, because of the wrist angle and control.

I think the early extension can be avoided by turning harder at the ball and making sure you don't thrust your hips. I'm not convinced by the argument that a strong grip means anyone using it will early extend.

cheers mike, i have just tried this with my driver, and from being a chronic slicer, it does seem to making a difference to my shot shape. i hit ironns and 3 hybrid and consistently draw them but with the same grip on driver slice. what i find is with strong grip bottom hand, ( i am a lefthander,) i don't rotate my hands through naturally. but by putting my bottom hand on top of the club, it encourages me to close the face more coming into impact. the very thing you have just said. so i will save this vlog and watch it until the print wears off, many thanks for confirming my thoughts.

This has been and still is my grip however my left hand is also strong and turned more to the right also. I struggled for many months trying to change my grip to neutral and it was a complete waste of time, I only tried to change because so many pros say this is the only way to grip a golf club...RUBBISH! With my strong grip I hit long, straight and consistent, I feel i have complete control over the club face and can promote a fade or draw...if I can do these things CONSISTENTLY then why change? I have also spent many months researching on line and there are actually a load of pros who use a strong grip. I think that the grip is an individual thing and if it works for you and your body go with it. In general strong grip amateurs hit far longer too...but only if that grip is also well suited to them and their swing and body type. I found other videos on YT that support this, check out Dan Whittaker on strong grip and Steve Johnson "benefits of a strong grip".

I had done the strong grip. I was still slicing. I started to bow my wrists and it started to snap hook. So I know probably won’t work forever but then I started to ever so slightly open the club face at address and smacking it straight. But with a strong grip there is a lot of outliers you have to put in with it

I’ve found out what works for some doesn’t work for all. I started putting my right hand under with my thumb pointed toward the target and has went straight ever since.

strong right hand doesnt necessarily lead to closed face on back swing. ive got a bud that is super open on backswing then comes from the outside. leads to massive club rotation and leading heal into the ball. either a pull low hook or glancing blow push or many times a hosel....... this example is probably normal though.

Wow this is EXACTLY what happens to me. And yes, I tend to either hook it or push it. This has been so usefull thank you!
PD: do you have any tips on the approach you should follow when changing your grip? (Because at first it feels very unconfortable)

Seemed to possible give me a more easy to replicate grip. Hoping it works well for me this season leading to more consistency and help lower my score.

Just started golf in 6 months.. struggling with right hand neutral grip…I really can’t hit a ball without strong right hand grip… it tends to hook .. but the ball can fly…

For me, I want to feel like both palms are on top of the shaft while starting by ensuring the lever between left index finger and palm pad is present.

You need to watch Mike Malaska....i understand now there is no normal strong or week grip....its all about match ups...strong top hand strong bottom hand etc...
Strong grip doesn't mean you will hit ot left...this only happens if you have an old fashioned release pattern where you let your bottom hand turn over the top...
Ive always been strong grip....some teachers tried to change it ...but it gives me more problems than solutions

Exactly, the match up I see so often is what I talked about in this video 👍

The games changed. All the top players go strong. You want to cream the golf ball go long go strong. Look at DJ, Bubbs, Koepka, all have super strong grips. Just get a thicker grip to stop the pull or hook. It works great. Changed my game moving from neutral to strong.

Michael Newton Golf he’s weak. I had a chat with Lee westwood at a city charity dinner. He said a lot of top golfing coaches will advise a strong grip. The game has changed its about power now. If your a slicer of a golf ball I would advise moving to a stronger grip 💯.

Hi Michael - when are you going to demo the new Titleist irons 2023 and post your session?

I started using a stronger grip. I’m 68 with 9.6 handicap index. Over the last couple of years I believe my grip moved to a more neutral position from a strong position, costing me to loose distance with my irons. Weaker shots. I stated using a much stronger grip again and notice my original distance coming back. Does that make sense?

Another key, in my opinion, is matching neutral to neutral, strong to strong. This video shows a neutral left with both a strong and a neutral right. I would expect the neutral right to align better with the neutral left. However - what about the strong right with the strong left?

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  Год назад

strong right and left typically going to create a closing twist on the shaft so generally you'd see the player compensate through impact to square the face back up......ie. handle lift, early extension, body slide are typically movements I would see from golfers.

With this more neutral grip position do you recommend at set up having a slightly more closed club face ? ( I play ball slightly back in stance and I close club face ( about 25 degrees or more )for a draw and it works very well ) An observation : I notice there is a difference , whether I close or open club face at address ( STATIC POSITION I ll call it ) , then what happens to the club face , while coming through at impact ( call it DYNAMIC POSITION ) . Note: for fade I play ball slightly forward of center , but keep grip same( club face slightly LESS CLOSED then for draw ) Put another way , though my club face may be very CLOSED at address ( STATIC POSITION ) , as I come through the ball during full swing , it squares up perfectly ( DYNAMIC ) . I guess then what I am asking is if you would comment on grip choice ( strong, weak , neutral ) vis a vis ball position , your thoughts on it , please ?

different ball positions will create different locations on the arc of your swing. i.e.. ball position more forward will strike the ball later in the swing and generally delivering a more closed club face in relation to target and vice versa. Really go with what works for you and what gives you the flight your wanting and one that is consistent. It's all about having control of your golf ball at the end of the day.

Very useful video thanks, as I have this problem, and even though I know it, I am so strongly right-handed, it is hard to keep it neutral, but I will crack it, had a lesson on Saturday, and you have identified the shot results I get. A question though please, would a strong right hand grip increase the possibility of a shank? I hit them sometimes, not often thankfully. Thanks.

I don't have a right index fingertip so when i use a neutral right hand grip it feel like i have no control over the clubhead as the right index finger can only sit just under the grip and not cradle it like shown. What would you suggest in terms on compensating for this? or is that potentially a root cause for a lot of problems?

  • @slatt33
    @slatt33 7 лет назад +2

Does not the grip you choose depend on whether you roll your arms through impact or whether you simply square the face by turning your body using less arm rotation? Trevino used a strong grip and still hit a fade. I need to really move the ball on a big draw, I might use a strong grip, or when I need to hit a low rocket into the wind.
