    Air traffic controller is a job many people know about, but few understand. What do they do? How do I get hired? Is it stressful? What are the qualifications? The FAA will be hiring air traffic controllers again! Apply at www.usajobs.gov once the bid goes live, with open bids occurring later this year. Best of luck! In this video, I break down some basics about the job, how to apply, and how it works. Over the years, I have gotten literally thousands of questions pertaining to the position of ATC and others like it in the aviation industry, and in this short video, I hope to summarize some of the very basics involved with understanding how the whole thing works. In the coming weeks, I hope to build off this series, looking into more details involving the job. Best of luck! Please subscribe, and as always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!

    About Me:
    My name is David Lombardo, perhaps best known as the former face of ATC Memes. I have a deep passion for aviation, music/audio, video, building relationships, learning, and encouraging people to share their own unique stories! I attended Purdue University and majored in
    aviation management, and later found myself working at the New York Center air traffic facility.
    This is when I decided to create video and audio skits related to aviation. These productions went viral, and arguably introduced an entirely new format of entertainment into the industry.
    I would later leave ATC Memes and create my own brand, @LOaltitude, and the popular aviation podcast, Aviation LO Down.
    I encourage people to share their own creative side in the exciting world of the aviation industry!

    If you are picked up for Enroute you will go to the Academy, then to a facility where you will repeat what the Academy taught and take a bunch of simulator problems. If you pass that you will go on to OJT in the Control Room where you will be trained and evaluated on a daily basis. If you pass that you will be certified and start working your way up in experience and pay. It is an arduous three-year process for most people. My experience as a 30-year Controller and 6-year Instructor is previous background has little application past the initial training in Enroute. Tower and Enroute are two different worlds. Radar Approach and Enroute are very similar so if you have done that in the military it will be a benefit. Even then, non-Radar training is a world of its own. I worked in three different facilities in the U.S. and Afghanistan and loved my career. Good luck.

    This was awesome, thanks for sharing your information! I am curious about why you stepped down as a controller. I assume you made it through the academy, but it can't be for the money of running a meme account. Was it the stress? Was it not what you expected? You still seem passionate about it so I am slightly confused. Thanks, however, for this cool video!

    • @LOAltitude
      @LOAltitude  4 года назад +11

      Thanks! No problem. Truthfully, I left because I wanted to build my own business and while the job itself didn't seem too bad, the shift work was brutal. I knew I could't work days/nights/midnights in one week. Furthermore, I felt that if I didn't use my time in my late 20s to quit, start my own thing, and grow it, it would get more and more difficult. Turns out, I made the right move. However, it was not an easy choice! Today I work with multiple stakeholders within the aviation and ATC industry, and so I am still very much connected to it; even more than I was as an ATC. Hope this helps!

      And he is not the only person who has ever stepped down from being a controller to do something different or to follow a different dream. • @learner1457
    @learner1457 4 года назад +4

    Thanks, for the informational video. I had a few questions if you don't mind answering: 1. How does the college credit to work experience combination work? 2. How difficult is it to get placed at a higher level facility like JFK or LAX out of the academy? 3. How much can one expect to make if they work overtime at a high-level facility? 4. What are your thoughts on transitioning to management and what is their pay like? 5. If someone is hardworking and all but are only in this job for the money will they be able to last?

    • @LOAltitude
      @LOAltitude  4 года назад +6

      1. College is usually applied on a credit basis, ie how many courses you actually completed, but really how the actual combination works is anyone's guess. Just be sure to put anything that you can think of in the application.
      2. That is not possible; you will NOT be sent to a level 12 facility right out of the academy. Notable exceptions are the ARTCCs, and SOME specific facilities that have their own independent bids. This is almost always because these facilities are notoriously hard to staff; the most notable example of this is N90/New York TRACON. Due to traffic complexity, facility culture, and cost of living, I would be willing to say that N90 is the most difficult air traffic control facility in the world. Still, people certify there all the time, so, don't take anyone's advice to heart.
      3. Depends on the facility. But overtime can be significant. I know people who make well over $250,000 with overtime (or a lot more...) but I also know controllers at smaller VFR towers that make $60-80k. Still a very good salary by any standard, and you still have a life. Also I cannot stress cost of living enough, something many, especially early in their careers (20s) don't think about. My property taxes here on Long Island ALONE are more than my entire cost of living was in Indiana. If you live in San Francisco, making $500,000 is like making $80k in Cleveland.
      4. Depends on what your life goals are. Most controllers don't do it because many of them make more than the managers, and to be quite frank, managing ATCers doesn't seem like a job many people would ever want to do. If you think controlling pilots is bad, just try to control ATCers. LOL. Then there's just the fact that many ATCers don't have the personality interest for management. I wouldn't be caught quoting anyone, per se, but it would be my quess that the majority of controllers would simply get bored, and would rather work airplanes. Again, human psychology is complex. and everyone is different. Finally, the union (NATCA) is a very good and strong union, at least relatively speaking. I don't want to really get into labor relations, but I recommend anyone interested in the job reads up on NATCA. I have real world experience on both sides, and they both have + and -s. As a footnote, for those controller trainees out there, I would highly encourage you to join the union. There are many benefits to this.
      5. Again, depends. Personally, as I mention in the video, it's more or less a type of personality and stress management thing than doing it 'for the money'. Sure, you can make good money, but keep in mind that there is never a free lunch. I especially stress the physical, mental, and social risks associated with rotating shift work, which is undeniably intrusive for many, many people. As always in life, instead of asking what you'd like to accomplish, per se, a better metric is to ask what you're willing to give up. Truthfully, giving up my physical health is not something I am willing to do, and I decided that somewhere along the timeline.
      Cheers and best of luck.

      Military experience will help more than spending money on a degree that will not guarantee a job. It will also make you eligible for bidding VRA(veteran only) bids when they come out. If you want to go to school, think Embry Riddle. In my 28 years, they consistently turned out the best prepared ATC trainees.

For people who received their TOL this year, it might take another 6 months to get into the academy since their hiring process is at a halt. A lot of people asking when the next bid or academy dates could be handed out. Not to add to the dim outlook, but something else to keep in mind is that the academy really pulled back on the class sizes and is currently overbooked.
    For example, We have already hired controllers that are certified on flight data, that just need to go to the academy for RTF or TSEW and are being told the earliest they can get in is October / November 2021.

      That's actually a great question, but so far as I understand, yes, you will still go to the schoolhouse. The good news is, it'll probably be easier for you, so long as you get tower. • @J1947W
      @J1947W 4 года назад

Good luck.

      Def ask the flight surgeon on this one. There are no guarantees. I wouldn't recommending going to college for ATC. Def have a deep interest, and stay educated on the field and apply as often as possible. But I would be weary of 'majoring' in air traffic control. Outside of the FAA, it is virtually worthless. To be frank, I wouldn't even major in aviation. I went to Purdue and majored with aviation, but I also did management. I was very close to doing engineering. I don't think I would be in any different spot (though, perhaps I would have partied less, LOL), but for what it's worth, I think, just as a general opinion, the more broad your degree, the better. The purpose of college isn't to get you a job, it's to make you able to think better. Big difference in paradigm.

      You do not need a degree. I didn't have one back in 1989 and got hired on a "OTS" (off the street) bid. I did have military ATC experience but it was not needed on my bid. The FAA has had many types of bids and requirement over the years. VRA(veterans), OTS, CTI(college training initiative), and some hybrids of these. Someone in the FAA thought that having a degree would bring in better candidates, so for a while, that's all that could get hired. That DID NOT produce better applicants. In my experience, 28 years(yes, I went through the old screen in OKC), the success rate dropped from 60-65% passing to just above 40%. I'm certain that is why you are seeing many more OTS bids. It is a mentality that is needed more than anything else. Work on your 3 years of practical work experience and bid when they open it up again.

    What are the hours like? 40 a week? do your hours shift around from day shift to night shift?

    • @LOAltitude
      @LOAltitude  4 года назад +3

      40 hours is the normal schedule. As I mentioned, many facilities are short staffed, so there are many overtime hours. The shifts are all over the place. Normally, you'll rotate based on the local agreement and schedule. Admittedly, the schedules can be notoriously severe. It just depends on where you work. Sometimes you'll do something like 2 evening shifts, 1 middle of the day/swing shift, and then two nights, or a midnight shift then get 2-3 days off. Personally, that always kind of scared the shit out of me. While it is true that some people seem to have a physical and/or psychological ability to shift their circadian rhythm more efficiently than others, it is also absolutely true that sleep is one of the most fundamental components of mental and physical health. Last year I read a book by Dr. Matthew Walker called 'Why We Sleep'. It's a terrifying look at how bad rotating shifts can be. I am NOT saying this to discourage you (like I said, many people can handle it fine). But it is most certainly a realistic thing to be concerned about. I should also note that, unlike the military, an on the same token as mentioning that many medications are banned, things like modafinil/Provigil, and/or amphetamines, etc, are of course all banned. The military, on the other hand, have used these types of drugs without significant issues for decades to help with shift work adjustment. That is well documented. It's a cultural thing. In any case, the job isn't for everyone. But if it's for you, do yourself a favor and buy a large coffee pot and start practicing this weekend. LOL. cheers

    • @ryanlomas7689
      @ryanlomas7689 Год назад +1

      Hi! I’m not an air traffic controller (yet) but I am beginning my academy training so I’ve gone through most of the things you’re asking about. I applied in august 2021 and I’m just now starting academy, so it takes aboit 13 months from the time you apply, the the time you are employed by the FAA. You many have to move states but you get somewhat of a choice where you go at first. You get to pick locations based on available options AND you academy score ranking compared to your other classmates at the end of the academy. But you can always transfer to a different facility after you check out eventually. Hope this helps!

    • @ryanlomas7689
      @ryanlomas7689 Год назад

      But like he said in the video, a lot of factors are at play with how long it takes so just keep waiting and applying if you don’t get this bid. And be willing to move to a random state you don’t really wanna go to because that’s the worst case scenario with placement.

      You’ll go to Oklahoma City to the academy, and your final scoring will determine your ranking. Highest scoring person in the academy gets first pick off of a specific list of places.

      I disagree with the advice. Here's the key... Pick a low-level facility if you must that has very high desirability.a facility that is highly desirable like say for example Asheville North Carolina tower would be a facility that it would be very easy for you to transfer out of after certification because someone always wants to come there. Search the nation for themost desirable facilities and that is where you want to go for your first one to certify and then apply for the NCEPT transfer program for certified controllers.

Alot of people move around the country this was. Just dont start in New York because they are always understaffed and you will never get out.
