Solo Winter Backcountry Camping & Campfire Cooking

- During a snowy, windy, and cold January weekend I spend the night in the wilderness of Alberta, Canada.
I locate my camp in an area that is thick with willow shrubs and evergreen trees to help block the wind. Setting up an open tarp-shelter allows me to keep a fire going all night which aids in keeping me warm. I cook up a garlic butter shrimp fried rice dish for supper, then finish with a mini apple cobbler dessert.
I sleep peacefully next to my fire, and under two wool blankets stay pleasantly warm.
In the morning I cook a bacon and egg baked potato for breakfast before packing up my camp and returning home.

Spending time out in nature is the best thing for our well being, away from houses,cars,roads,people, surrounded by the natural world with all the sights and sounds is an amazing experience that for me nothing can beat, I try to go wild camping here in the u.k at least once a month, it keeps me sane and has all the entertainment you could ever need, best with no technological devices also

I feel you. I'm in south texas I've only seen snow 1 time in my entire life. Would love to camp in it and see what challenges it bring

Late to the party, but I'm from northern Michigan and it is a lot of fun, but you have to know what you're doing otherwise it can be really dangerous. Winter is very unforgiving.
Be careful what you wish for in southern Alberta it can get down to -30 c and then a Chinook wind blows in and it’s +15c.

I remember being young and being in the cold woods with my kit and rifle for a night. Best fun ever. Anything on a campfire tastes better. And in between meals, a quite mind and holy sleep. Thanks for this.

I've probably spent a few grand on mine. Even more in tools to make knives and other gear, because I found out I cant buy much that suits my personal needs. Funny you should mention college, cuz I never went; i always saw it as a waste of time. It's easier to live making money and providing: than it is to spend money for an half cocked promise of big bucks.... That never really mattered in the first place.

I can understand that, going out alone can be quite intimidating at first. My suggestion would be to look into any local camping/hiking groups and see if there's anyone that would want to go camping with you.

I admire and respect you practically "gourmet cooking" under difficult conditions. You could probably hire yourself out as a camping chef.

For a camp-use cutting board, the thin, flexible ones are top notch. They can be easily cut to a convenient size for a pack, are lighter weight than thicker boards, and can be used for other purposes. Also useful at home. I think you would like them.
