Music composed by Farya Faraji. This is a symphonic piece I made about Alexander the Great, one of the most fascinating figures in world history, a man who has fascinated me since childhood and still does. I wanted to describe not only the broad strokes of Alexander's life as a conqueror, but also to describe the man himself, the individual with hopes, fears and insecurities, a man with virtues and vices, genius and mental instabilities; someone who could be a great king to some and a tyrant to others, which is why I didn't call this Alexander the Great--only Alexander.

Overture, Youth and To Asia:
At the heart of the symphony lies a simple melody on a pan flute that begins the story. To me, the essence of Alexander's character is found in that simple, vulnerable pan flute, not in the screams of large orchestras. I believe that all his life, Alexander was just a boy on the inside, a boy who desperately wanted to flee from the shadow of his mother and of his home; always searching for a home, for rest, but never finding it. The first three movements use Ancient Greek instruments and recreate the sounds Alexander himself would have heard. The lyres and the diaulos are played gently at first, then more violently during "To Asia," showing the textural range of these ancient instruments.
Son of Ra:
This section pays homage to the 50's and 60's sound of sword and sandal epics in the style of Miklos Rosza's soundtracks. I wanted to express Alexander's hubris and megalomaniacal tendencies with this section, and I believe the 50's style of sword and sandal films reflect ideas of self-grandeur, as well as fitting the theme of Ancient Egypt, since it was musically represented with this style many times.

India:
Classical Indian music instrumentation. The chanting is in Sanskrit, and is the first strophe of the Shiva Tandava Stotra, a Hindu hymn to Shiva.

Im so sick of Hollywood continuing to make films based off fantasy or sci-fi. I want more historical films based off Rome, Greece, Persia, Babylonia, Assyria, India, China, Japan, etc etc. Your music makes me imagine what an historical Hollywood or even Bollywood film would be like
Don't forget the mysterious Ancient Etruscans. Instead of flimsy sequels and remakes, where are the films about these other lesser known, mysterious and intriguing civilizations?

I'm personally rooting for a massive GoT-like series starting with Xenophon and the 10 000 in Persia, then back to Greece with the peloponnesian wars, then following the rise of Macedon with Phillip the Second and his son, then the conquests of Alexander, ending with the Diadochi wars as a "cycle-ending" climax.
As a tease for the next cycle, we could have a transition episode on Pyrrus of Epirus trying his luck in Italy, unaware of an emerging new Roman Republic.
Then second cycle depicting the clash between Rome and Carthage, Hannibal and Scipio.
Maybe it's a little too ambitious for it to ever happen but eh one can dream.
There is certainly no lack of epic historical films and series based off India, China and Japan at least. Throw in Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and a bunch of other countries too.
Anyway, Hollywood has done enough cringeworthy appropriation, and here you are wishing for more.
Imagine the look on Alexander the Great's face if someone went back in time and told him that in 2,300 years, an Iranian would compose a forty-minute symphony about him.
He would probally be flattered
Farya, you have inspired many people about culture and history that unfortunately is underrepresented like Non Arab rule in middle east (Persian, Byzantine, Greek) amazing work 👑

Before Gaugamela, Darius offered half his Empire, seeking for peace. Parmenio said "If I was Alexander, I would accept that offer". He simply replied "and if I was Parmenio, I would too". The beggining of the end. Alexander saw complete conquest as the only acceptable destiny.

To Eternity, his last dying moments. There is peace at first, but then, at 40:07, you hear it, his last breath; it's his ascension to Olympus, side by side with the others. He is now a god. And then the symphony allows itself to end, and Alexander's life with it.

Even now, 2,300 years later Alexander the Great is still one of THE most known ancient figures just below Jesus of Nazareth. He conquered the literal known world for his time and became the direct inspiration for Julius Caesar and practically started the Age we now live in. His name shall be known even as we reach the furthest edges of our galaxy and we have a galaxy-spanning Empire. His name shall never die.

Even Darius or any other king from our land... And we had so many great kings... But cyrus was more than king.. Prophet? Maybe.. But in my opinion...he was and is liks father for iran and iranians...sad we know little about him.. But even that little information is Enough...Alexander the great consider as enemy for us.. The whole piece is amazing! But that ending... "to eternity"... is out of this world. Silent and peaceful at first , then magnificent and awe inspiring at the end of the piece. Really hit me in the feels. Thank you for this music once again!!

Happy you noticed! I've always loved the use of leitmotifs from 19th century Romantic composers like Wagner-having a theme for a previous idea and bringing it back when needed

Reading Arrian's account of the campaigns of Alexander with Farya Faraji's mystical symphonies playing in the background makes you feel as if you are standing in the battlefield itself, watching the carnage unfold. It is sublime, surreal and serendipitous.
I highly recommend playing the India soundtrack when reading Book 5 of Arrian detailing Alexander's campaign in Pakistan and the Battle of Hydaspes on the river Jhelum against King Porus and his elephants.
The grand brass instrumentation of the Son of Ra never fails to put a smile on my face! It's all the grand Egyptian movie scores I've ever heard all compiled into one sublime movement, and as expected it is excellent.
It might be neat to hear your musical take on the conquest of Hannibal, but I imagine it's a lot of work! Bonus points for sharp whip-crack-like percussion during battles paying homage to the whip cracks from the slings of the the Balearic slingers, Hannibal's most effective missile unit in my opinion!

The ending of Gaugamela is bone chilling its like listening to the dying gasp of an empire. Especially because of the contrast and the juxtaposition of the how that melody is introduced so grandiose and bombastic in the beginning.
My man just casually releasing a whole album while keeping his weekly songs upload unhindered.

I think that the part of "the death" is the greatest.... nostalgic that he has died so young, but also honorable.... about the labors he achieved in his life.... Great piece of art🏺🙏🕊
Unfortunately, he failed at establishing a successor in order to continue his empire to exist as a whole. Thus he's also kind of co-responsible for the wars to come after his early death.

I've always hoped for a TV series on just the Diadochi wars but even the budget for that would scare off any studio. 😔

I would like a long and authentic series about sparta. Started with Lycurgus and his original communalistic and militaristic reforms, inspired by the oracle of Delphi.
That would cause actual wars about what is historically accurate.
Also, no more westerners appropriating Greek history and mythology, thank you very much. History that does not belong to them in general, for that matter.
Bollywood is welcome to do it though. Or Tollywood.

Perhaps some time on the future we could see some which are similar for other figures? Like Cyrus, Aurelian, etc.
Cyrus is definitely the next one on the list, and I'm also gonna do the Ottomans and Cleopatra in that same long form, symphonic style.

I am a scholar of ancient history. Alexander the Great is truly one of the most fascinating, titanic figures of the ancient world. He strode across the rich lands of Asia, remaking the world. Really love this music and channel.
Btw, the personal name of Darius III was Artashata, which means "the happiness of truth" in Old Persian. Artashata was forever cast into shadow by the great light that Alexander cast. One of history's most tragic figures, in my opinion.

Okay, now that I've listened to it in its entirety: holy shit. That was not something I was expecting to listen to a week after your last upload, that was a remarkable piece(s) of music. The use of previous melodies in the context of Alexander and his clashes and integration with those he conquered was portrayed excellently and add a great deal of depth to the story being told. This is going down among the greats. Stunning work, and also as a side bar, I hope you get to doing more music from India too because you also nailed that, and I know you covered Zaalima before with Alexandra but still, would love to see more of your take on older music from the subcontinent.
I'm super glad you liked it my man! As for Indian music, I'm definitely interested in going into it; but it's gonna take a while hahaha. Indian Classical music and Carnatic music are like an entire world in and of themselves, they're like this whole universe of music of their own. I've always prided myself on doing authentic and researched music so for now I'll be listening and learning. It's definitely on my list of styles to cover because their music is just a-ma-zing, but for now I'll be spending at least a year just learning it :p The atmospheric part used samples played by Indian musicians since I'm not equipped to tackle it yet, but one day I hope I will!

What would be the thing I would like to hear absolutely the most would be a simphony about Justinian and Theodora - Justinian's dreams about restoring the Empire to it's former glory, their rise to power, the wars with Persians, expansion of the Empire, plague, the Nika riot (the riot that started when the Blue and Green parties united to replace a set of government officials, mainly the tax collector, and the place where Theodora marked herself as "one of the most underrated badasses in the history"), the construction of Hagia Sophia and all other remarkable projects, and finally; Theodora's death, followed by Justinian falling in depression, and him dying.
I have so many ideas about how it could be done, and the best man make it would definitely be you. Thank you again for all of your work, and I hope my proposal will be considered.

a symphony for Justinian and Theodora would be awesome, even cooler if there is a TV series about them and we have a series of compositions for each significant event. that is my dream :D
@@byzansimp Byzantium is, sadly, very underrated in the western culture, so some major studio making a TV show on it is somewhat unlikely, but not impossible. As far as Hollywood sees history, immediately after the fall of Rome came the late Middle Ages, with all the stereotypes that come with it. I'd still very much love if they decided to make what we really want, and for once think of the wisest course of action, and not of outdated conventions ;)

I was listening to the Augustus Symphony. Then, I checked your channel for others and saw this one. Since I'm working on a book about invincible generals like Alexander the Great, I decided to listen to this first. Though not the first or last of military leaders who never lost a battle they commanded, Alexander, like all of us, was a mixture of good and evil. But beyond that, he more than earned his subsequent title of "The Great."

Never got to Origins yet but I played Odyssey a lot and it definitely deepened my love for Ancient Greece even more
@@faryafaraji Origins is far better than Odyssey: a more compelling story, mix of Egyptian and Greek cultures + Roman Cyrenaica. And more historically accurate (classical type ruins in Odyssey did bother me)

Quite a surprise - matching para-orchestral music with biograhy-historical facts and personalities was never easy and yet, here it makes sense. Overall it has the merit of avoiding being just another movie soundtrack kind if piece. .But the paramount is indeed "To Eternity". Just a small catch - gi back to the last movement of Das Lied von der Erde, of Gustav Mahler - ABSCHIUED / The Farewell).. A perfect march to Eternity -- Ewig, ewig, ewig (always, always, always). Thank you.
