Is M1 Max MacBook Pro Still Good Enough for Video Editing in 2024?

  • Is the M1 Max MacBook Pro still a good computer for video editing, or do you need an M2 or an M3 to work with 4k video files?
In this video I go over my experience as a video editor after 3 years of using the M1 Max MacBook Pro and how I still dont feel like I need to upgrade!
    Link to Buy: amzn.to/4aiwdKO
Somehow, the M1 MacBook Pro is still powerful enough to handle anything I ever throw at it. I practically never wait for anything. I dont even know what would be improved by having an even faster computer since this one already does everything practically instantly and it's three years old.

Ha! I completely forgot to add the B-roll at 1:58 about switching video project files in a half a second. I'm going to go ahead and leave it in, since this video is technically about editing and I like being wide open about how I edit and how editing goes and all that. Also - that fan sure did speed up int he background towards the end and make a terrible lighting situation. Sorry about that..

I’m actually going to upgrade to the M1 Max from my M1 Pro just for the time savings in video editing. Great video.

Yeah the power difference of that extra memory bandwidth, extra cores and extra video encoders changes everything about it. You won't be disappointed.

Nice! I have an m1 max 16 in with 64gb of ram I got in April 2022 and it's still a beast. Yes it's not a fast as an M3 but it still is way overkill for my uses. You definitely push it harder than I do. Forgot that it could do like multiple 4k and 8k videos at a time so that was cool to see.
Will probably definitely keep it for another year or 2 at least. Maybe I'll keep it until software support drops in like 2027 or 2028 or something.

Apple didn’t screw up by making great computer lol. What do you expect from an M2 it’s just the next chip up. You don’t buy a Honda Accord 2021 and 2024 and expect and entirely new vehicle.

Depending on your use case and preferences, the savings on an M1 series device will be offset by support cut off. At about four years old now, out of six or seven.

Are you saying as of now it's not worth buying?

    • @thomas0086

@@ZDavis-qt5ce everyone’s circumstances are different budget and need wise so I can’t blanket say yes it isn’t worth buying.
If you can get a really good deal, yes but if it is only just a few hundred dollars less than M2 or M3, I would save more and purchase those instead.
Both M2 and M3 came out in 2023, M4 is coming out, supposedly in the next 2 to 3 months.
Sure, the system will work fine after Apple drops OS support for it, but If I’m going to spend close to 3/4 of the price for m1, losing 4 years of OS support is a strong factor against M1 now.
There is always a chance that Apple will support M series longer than Intel.
I’m in the market for a new computer myself, I want to get most value for my money which includes longevity.

Thanks so much, Nicholas, for this video: I'm considering a purchase from a private party of an m1 max macbook pro, 64gram, 4 tbs of ssd, 16 inch. it's manufacture date is 2021, the battery cycle count is 4--it's been sitting unused for 3 years in the box; battery health is listed as 100% but I'll have Apple store run the diagnostics. the person wants $1900 for it, there is no warranty. I want to use Final Cut Pro, but am a beginner. I love the features on this but feel that it may be pricey, and maybe I should wait a few months for prices to drop on the m3? Any suggestions? Thanks for your video!!!

I also have the same model (base m1 max 16inch) as you and have had it since launch date. However, I’m still in Monterey and thinking about upgrading to a later OS. Which os are you on and has it improved or hurt your battery and overall performance?

I use Final Cut Pro. It's made specifically for these chips and so it can decode HEVCHS footage super smoothly. This is the first time Ive ever had a computer for 4 years without even feeling like an upgrade would change anything. Editing is still perfectly smooth and responsive.
