Reggae Strong-Black Uhuru, Pt. 1

- The first reggae supergroup to win a Grammy in 1984, Black Uhuru, exemplifies the militant roots tradition of the Waterhouse sound. Reggae Strong interviewed Black Uhuru in 1984- Mykal, Duckie, Puma, Sly and Robbie-after their show at the Ritz...the shortest interview we ever did, and if you heard Duckie's recent interview on Entertainment Report Podcast, ( • DUCKIE SIMPSON (BLACK ... ), it's easy to understand why no one was too chatty that night.
So in this episode, we picked up the Black Uhuru story in 1986, as Duckie, Puma and Junior Reid returned to NY again to do a show at the Ritz. And when the crew traveled to JA in 1987, Stafford interviewed Duckie again, driving in KIngston.
Included are original concert and rehearsal clips shot at The Ritz, with Earl Chinna Smith on guitar and Santa Davis on drums performing, "Conviction or a Fine", "Great Train Robbery" and "Let Us Pray". The News and Reviews segment with the Night Nurse,, was shot in Kingston in 1990, and added later, when this episode was re-broadcast on WNYC-TV. I've also added one of the original cultural segments, on dread-wrapping, with Henry Shillingford (shot at long-gone Tower Records downtown).
On a directorial note: nobody got good shots of Chinna onstage during, "Great Train Robbery", and every time I look at this, I am irked, remembering the intention to make up for that by shooting him doing his guitar solo atop a train trestle in Jamaica. One of those of those plans that got thwarted for one reason or another during the JA shoot....
Special thanks to Stafford Ashani, may he R.I.P., and cameraman, Jefferson Miller. - Видеоклипы
I love Puma !!!!!
i wish they had more footage of her, beautiful though.
I love you for loving puma
❤ puma she is the star of the band in my opinion up to this day. Sad that not much is said about her especially from the band members that are around (alive) duckie. Junior reid & rose. She was most outstanding to the unique sound of the band. Puma rest in power
Check on RUclips; Reggae Appreciation Society they just posted story about her.
Had the opportunity to see them live in Santa Cruz CA for their NOW Tour . What a glorious ride
Never watched this..amazing
dennis brown in the door of the backstage....
I say that all the time. Puma made this band unique, but in fairness, Duckie does give her her due.
Thank you very much for posting this concert many years ago I hope to see this beautiful performance Thank you very much thank you very much
Looks like an excellent concert. Can’t go wrong with sly and Robbie on board. Many thanks for sharing your wonderful reggae music.❤️💛💚
But, it's not Sly& Robbie .....
Santa Davis was on drums and Chris Meredith was on bass...and they did not go wrong either.
On Drums = Santa Davis (former drummer of Peter Tosh's Word Sound and Power Band, and on Bass is C. Meredith, Sly and Robbie nowhere to been seen here pall.
Sorry. For. My. Mistake. Take it as a compliment. It’s a great. Performance. 💚💛❤️
THAT JUNIOR REID BUT MICHAEL ROSE AND HIS MUSIC AND SANDRA PUMA JONES REST IN PACE AND REST ROBBIE SHAKESPEARE JAH RASTAFARI 🙏🙏🙏🙏✝️✝️✝️✝️🌷🌷🌷🌷

Amazing, it really worths waiting for!
I first listened to the "live in nyc" CD way back in 1995 (I was 15 that time) and I was mesmerized and always think about: is there a video from this concert? will it someday be avaiable?
After 27 years, finally I have access to this amazing production
Black uhuru my favorite group ever, Live in NYC one of my favorite and most "misterious" albums ever (due to the lack of information in it´s booklet)
Not sure if I ever explained this to you, but that album was supposed to be released along with the video. The album was going to have stills from the video...was really supposed to be a big and beautiful package. Spent a lot of time mastering the video (on 1" tape--really high quality), and I had one thing left to do...put the mixed audio track on the video master. (We recorded 24-track sound). The day before I was going to the studio to do that, the man who financed the video, took the masters (there were 2 masters...one was for me, the other for him), out of the studio and left the country with them. Then he proceeded to put out that album in a very mediocre way. If you think you were frustrated, imagine how I felt. Up till today, I still don't have the high quality master (only production copies), and the final mixed track is not on the video. The biggest professional frustration of my career! Sigh. But something is better than nothing, and I'm glad you and others enjoy it anyway.
@@ReggaeStrongTV I didnt know this story. Very sad. Indeed, the CD is a mediocre release, but even mediocre as it is, its a wonderful protrait of this B.U line up and this amazing performance.
But you got to feel very happy no:, cause a lot of people besides me are really enjoing a lot your videos and your channel.
By the way, pure gold the "conviction or a fine" version, one of the most mysterious and obscure reggae tracks ever, avaible here but not avaible in the Rohit release (the live in NYC album).
Never knew junior Reid was part of black uhuru 😊
Oh, yes. After Michael Ros left. He was the lead singer on 3 albums.
Junior Reid was still a member of Black Uhuru.
Do you maybe have lyrics of Let us pray?
Well I googled and see no one has transcribed them. I don't have the time to do that myself, but if you want to do so to the best of your ability, you can email what you've got and if there are lines missing, I will fill them in for you. (digur19@gmail.com)
@@ReggaeStrongTV thank you for answer
14:07 & 19:57 do you have these complete songs on video from this show?
A lot of the songs from the Ritz concert are here on the channel.
This concept of negativity and unholiness regarding black, is part of the miseducation we were handed by the evil slave master!
