They also have a third-party auditor who works primarily with churches review all finances each year. I wish Brazilian mormons had access to these information. As most Brazilian mormons are less educated and do not speak English, they are much more distant to what really is the mormon church than the rest of the mormons in the world. Poorer members sacrifice too much paying tithing out of their already strained and limited income while the mormon church hoards this insane amount of money. I would say the church indeed helps some people financially and there are some level of connections and entrepreneurship within the church in Brazil which helps some (only some) members to get out of poverty, but most of the members are still very poor and clueless about all of this. I was a nursery leader and remember the simple lessons about honesty (using coins sometimes) that leaders in SLC were sure that toddlers would understand, and also my confusion as I bought and sold homes in Utah and was struck by the greed and dishonesty of some active church members (including leaders). Dragon sickness is as relevant today as it was in tales of old!

The good news is that we, as common people, can learn from the church! We can learn that the difference between winners like Jesus and Elon Musk and losers like the lower-class is that winners can just live off of unearned income that stacks cash by use of investments and the power of compound interest way faster than actually earning it! Thanks capitalism and thanks Jesus/LDS Church for a lesson well taught!
Now, follow that example and don't pay your tithing until you have actual increase from the cash you stack from investments. Right? I'm not missing the point, am I? I mean, that's the example to follow right???

(Disclaimer: I haven't paid a church tithe since 1991, when Lavinia Fielding was exco'd for defying certain general authorities' demands that she stop publishing instances of sex abuse in Mormondom.)
Disclosure is a separate issue from funding the mall, rescuing a legacy Mormon insurance co., and misspeaking about both. The mall was an effort to protect the vicinity of Temple Sq from urban decay. Do Catholics complain about costs to maintain the Vatican? Also, if you have the $$, it's understandable to bail out a failing insur co. that for decades was quasi-church and later informally affiliated, the failure of which would bankrupt many longtime subscribers. But nondisclosure to the people whose money it is (Jesus made it clear money pertains to Caesar, not Himself nor presumably His church) is misguided and damaging. Also, "fibbing" about project funds, whether intentionally or thru neglect of due diligence before speaking, needs to change. These practices do not constitute merely the appearance of evil but evil itself.

It really grinds my gears that a church that has over 100 billion dollars in reserves requires its members to volunteer hours on the weekend to clean the local meetinghouses. In years past, the church used to employ custodians to clean the local meetinghouses. The church has no problem with paying janitors to work on the Sabbath during General Conference. I remember seeing a janitor cleaning up the bathroom inside the Conference Center on Sunday during General Conference when attended the Sunday Afternoon Session back in April 2019. Even the janitor mentioned that this was the first job he ever had that required him to work on the Sabbath.

I asked a member of our bishopric when the windows were getting fixed and he said he keeps asking that question and doesn't know. Noone will tell him. I mean, yeah, maybe there are a few people who pay, pray and obey and do so for 50 or 60 or even 80 years and remain broke as a joke and never get any assistance from the church but that's because a) the Lord is testing them and will reward them BIG TIME in the next life or b) they're bad people and are hiding sin and the Lord won't reward them in this life or the next 'cause He won't let them buy their way into heaven

My x-husband had forbidden me and the children from attending church and I left him. I went to the local Bishop and offered my services in exchange for help with buying groceries. He told me I had not prepared enough for being there in town and turned me down. I was shocked. It didn't affect my new testimony as I had only been a member for a few years, but I learned I couldn't rely on my leaders for assistance.
I went on to serve in many callings through the years but I remember the 'sting' of that time so long ago. How do you turn down a young mother who is asking for help?! When he gave me the talk about paying my tithing, I told him I’d have to see the church financial statements first. Long story short - he married someone else after a 6 month courtship.

The church’s claim to divine authority to use the name of Jesus to bludgeon its members into submission with the threat of divine judgment. As in… they have no such authority.

Church members don't need Big Church hiding the truth from them. They can handle it.

Michael Quinn isn't the most sympathetic church "expert" given his checkered history with the Hoffman debacle and his ulta progressive views. 2. Accounting records and financial statements don't lie- but they can be interpreted differently by progressive/conservative views
      3. Facts are facts- just be transparent as to where the funds are going!
      4. It is a little bit ironic that the church asks the young women to bring their own craft supplies for girls camp and the budget for the elders quorum for my ward for the entire year is $200 because there supposedly isn't enough money. $100 b is a lot of $...

‘The importance of having a sense of the sacred is simply this-if one does not appreciate holy things, he will lose them. Absent a feeling of reverence, he will grow increasingly casual in attitude and lax in conduct. He will drift from the moorings that his covenants with God could provide. His feeling of accountability to God will diminish and then be forgotten. Thereafter, he will care only about his own comfort and satisfying his uncontrolled appetites. Finally, he will come to despise sacred things, even God, and then he will despise himself.’
Is one of your uncontrolled appetites to assign motives to all things LDS history? Honestly I feel bad for you and those that absorb your bitter takes on all things LDS. I’m afraid you will one day regret this waste of your time. In your effort to reveal the ‘truth’ as you see it, the real truth is that you would be happier building others up rather then creating an echo chamber for others to spew their trauma. I’ve spoken to so many former members and every one of them has regretted the time wasted digging up the past and putting it online. Once they realize that they truly became free.

This church has gone so far off the rail from the true teachings of Christ. For a prophet to approve dishonesty (making shell companies), is a sign that church leaders are following men's desires. I remember when we used to have a church janitor who cared for the building and grounds. I don't even attend my ward anymore and yet every couple of months I'm 'assigned' to help clean the church building. Too cheap to pay a person and give them a good job. It makes me sick to know the church tells the poor to pay up over feeding your family. The elite get freebies while making the poor pay back loans. All of that and much more would come to light if the church was transparent with the wealth. Yes, I believe many members would stop paying tithing since only pennies are going to the poor.

Too many armchair critics here... The only thing the "LDS" Church did, was ask its members to cover light janitorial duties, most of which are nothing more than picking up after themselves snd leaving the restrooms clean and stocked.
The Church still maintains a long list of professional maintenance personnel, including plumbers, painters, electrician HVAC and full landscape services (to name a few).
The sheer number of "Mormon" meeting houses around the world is simply staggering and there's always a handful being constructed every single week.
While none of these new building are ever encombered with mortgages, professional Janitorial services are always expensive and subject to endless fluctuations.
In the early days of the Church, it was the members themselves who were tasked with building both temples and meetinghouses. These "Mormon" pioneers did it all and with their own two hands too.
Today the Church hires contractors and everything is done according to code. The Old pioneer days are done.
Unfortunately this has left many members with nothing to do but occasional welfare assignments. No longer is it "your church" which you built with your own hands, but the property of the corporate church of Salt Lake City.
Indeed most "LDS" churches are shared by more than one congregations and no longer confined to the Salt Lake Valley, Utah or even the United States.
The international corporate, LDS Church would very much like it's membership to think and feel like pioneers of the past. It is to this end that we're being asked to help clean our Churches.

The Parable of the Rich Fool
    Luke 12:13-21 (ESV)
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?”
And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

I'm completely shattered over EP.
