I experienced this reality with police when I was a teenager. They lie in their reports. Lying in reports isn't something that happens occasionally - it is a constant occurrence. Its standard practice. I got mugged walking outside. A friend of mine gave me a knife, which I forgot on my person. I got in trouble the next day at the school because I was eating lunch outside instead of in the cafeteria. The school police officer came to reprimand me and smalltalked me kindly back to the office. At the office, I told him I had the knife in my pocket and I calmly handed the knife to him after he verbally acknowledged that I was handing him the knife. He was all smiles and sweet talk as everything I wore was searched. Then comes the police report and the hearing. During the hearing, the police officer pulls out the report and reads it. "Jack was off of school grounds and as I approached him he started to run away. I brought Jack back to the office where Jack proceeded to pull out a knife on me." Who do you think that board hearing believed, me, a delinquent, or that police officer?

Every state I've lived in the state police have a reputation as being overly militarized. In my interactions with them during traffic stops they have been far more aggressive and suspicious than local police. I've watched these guys commit dangerous traffic violations amongst the general public while not operating at code. During my time as a MP I attended a conference with several state troopers from multiple states, and the attitude I felt coming from all of them was, "its us vs them, and I wish they would try something because they're all doing something." This is why, in my opinion, most state police troopers should have just enlisted and done their time against a real enemy instead of actively seeking to make every citizen they encounter a target.
These killer cops are cowardly bullies, which is the lowest kind of person you can be. They would never enlist because that could mean actually putting their life on the line and they can only terrorize the helpless. Cops like this Mcwhorter rat should be locked in prison for life no parole.
I was born in a huge city, but moved to a smaller town 30 minutes outside of this city. Growing up a former classmate of mine dealt with mental issues, he had a incident where he was tazed excessively causing his heart to stop, no weapons found, wasn’t ever covered. Also had another former classmate who’s sister was killed due to a cop running a red light, nothing happened
I went to school with Aaron Hernandez from the Patriots who killed that guy(s) and that guy Nick Brutcher who just killed two cops in my town and then was shot dead, so I went to high school with two killers. Actually three... There was another guy who murdered his wife and then himself, but I don't remember who he was cause he wasn't in my grade. Crazy world.
Was the guy getting tazed obeying the officers commands? Or was he consistently resisting? Problem is most people take these stories and run with them and don't tell the other side. If people are resisting the cops have no clue why they are resisting or what their mind set is so they have to get them detained and under control. The cop running the red light, did he have the lights on?
@@torqueandbeanssauce Probably, they've been known to jerk someone up in handcuffs and then say they're resisting, so it's not as if someone actually has to be. This is quite apart from the fact that cops were never founded for us, not ever. They're not there to keep us safe...
Funny how they bring up race so much in this, but they don't mention the fact that the people who are shot by police & don't make national headlines are white people. The amount of kids I met in school that were from rural areas that described the insane corruption of cops and other officials that just made things up to arrest and harass them was insane. It was crazy because it was at similar rates the kids from the poorer urban areas saw. These two groups need to come together as they have more in common than they think.
Sir I doubt that it's at the same rate ..no stop and frisk in rual areas bro..I've not driven through Montana and seen a whole corner of poor white kids down on their knees with their hands locked behind their heads ....
The Kentucky story reminds me of the case of Jack Yantis. One of Jack's bulls got out and was hit on the highway by his place near Council, ID. Jack went out with a rifle to put the animal down if need be but two sheriff's deputies were already on scene. Evidently they thought they could put the bull down with their pistols and the just made the bull and Jack mad. In the ensuing altercation Jack was shot dead. The deputies were never charged and I think ended up leaving Idaho to find new jobs. They also conveniently didn't have their body cams on. This was in 2015. The county settled the wrongful death suit his family brought for $2.6 million.
well thats the problem they pay you for the murder of your loved ones DONT TAKE THE MONEY SUE AND DONT SETTLE GET A JUDGEMENT!!!!! they print money they can easily buy your family members life many times over.
A pistol can kill a cow no problem if it's 9mm or better and the bullet is shot at the correct part of the skull. I'm guessing those idiot cops were just shooting at it's broadside. RIP Jack.
@Dom :of the xi-dzopa the cops had already been cleared. No charges were brought because get this "conflicting statements create sufficient doubt to prevent a jury from holding anyone criminally responsible". Essentially, Jack's wife and nephew saw the whole thing, they said the cops overreacted and killed Jack for nothing. Cops of course said he was threatening them pointing the rifle at them. Investigation was over in 2016, settlement came 2 years later.
It should be absolutely fucking mandatory for every law enforcement officer in America to have a body cam that runs continuously in real time monitored by everyone during the entirety of they're shift that cannot be turned off
My hometown is just a a couple miles away from San Antonio. Our town LOVES to hire SAPD and Bexar county sheriffs officer rejects and fired officers. My town hired both the SAPD cops that got fired recently. One for forcing a homeless man to eat a poop sandwich, and the female officer who decided it was fun and funny to punch a handcuffed pregnant woman multiple times and than continue to antagonize the lady. Plus SAPD wont do anything about the SAPD officer who has been caught in road rages and where he’s off duty and pulls his gun on people. He even told the cops who showed up the guy was lucky he didnt kill him. Even tho the off duty was the aggressor.

This is so sad that this happens daily in this country! My husband’s cousin was arrested one night for being drunk (happy drunk not violent ) and we got a call the next day that he hdied in his cell during the night. He was 29 years old and healthy.he is from Guatemala.when we got to see him at the funeral home the next day he was black and blue all over his face ,head and chest. We never got justice. And just last week a boy died bc the cops put him in a freezer and he froze to death.that happened in the same county. I know this is not shootings but still they died by the hands of officers.
Which is still important. Please start petitions and rally. Black shootings aren’t known simply because the person is black it’s known because we rally, march, petition.
My initial thought is, "He wanted to commit suicide, and those cops saw that as an opportunity to assassinate a man and fill their desire to kill a person. Pointing his gun at her, and telling them to get inside tells you what was about to follow." Please be clear, him wanting to commit suicide is NOT a reason to assassinate someone. I think pretending this was just cops not knowing what to do is just lying to ourselves.
"Not knowing what to do" Shouldn't one officer move to tazer him while the others cover him with their guns? I have no training/knowledge in this other than common sense.
Somebody once by me was threatening suicide. He ended up getting shot and killed by the local police. IDK about anyone else but if a man is threatening suicide and they shoot and kill him. That's not a win. You'd think you'd want to save ppl.. Even when it's from themselves. But no I agree wholeheartedly some cops are looking for any chance to off somebody. There reasoning most times aren't even that good. Like that one cop that said she mistakenly went into the wrong apartment. ON THE WRONG FLOOR! I believe they actually think we're that dumb.

What people forget is that police brutality affects every race, BUT it affects black people disproportionately. That DOESN’T mean that poor white people don’t matter or that black people matter more than white people. It’s just a matter of fact. Solving police brutality benefits all races, but it benefits black people more proportionally
It affects shady areas (trailer parks, projects, etc) more because there's more crime there and in many cities such areas are predominantly black and brown. There's also a "culture" of fighting the cops that's more prevalent amongst black and brown people than white or asian people.

They need to follow the program that has a psych professional or whatever that tags along or is sent to do deal with more mental health related calls so the cops handle the crime related calls. Don't have the cops complaining about there job is too hard.
I saw a report about on police department that had two cops that were trained mental health professionals. They dressed in plainclothes and they would be sent to all the mental health calls. It ended up improving interactions with the community, making their interactions safer etc. I think every department should have that.
Good luck hiring a unit for that, also now if you want to avoid having cops come in force just say it's mental health lol. Really people are too stupid.

This just happened couple weeks ago to a guy that was friends to my son. We have known him since elementary school. So sad they went to serve a warrant and 3 cops couldnt get him handcuffed and one shot him not just once but 3 times and in the head. Said they didnt know if he had a weapon within reach. He didnt. He just had mental issues. Why shot to kill like that???? I have a hard time with reading stories like these.
Body cam footage is actually a benefit to the police. It allows the police to prove if a suspect resisted arrest, or that they were a clear and present danger to the police or others, and it can disprove complaints of misconduct. Of course it can also prove that prove that police misconduct took place. For this reason, I find any resistance of the police to make and keep body cam footage to be very suspicious.
The only problem i can see is long term this logic being placed on civilians, ie "why are you against facial recognition cctv on evey corner unless you have something to hide?" I am very pro body cams for cops, but we need to be cautious we don't overstep!

As someone who works as an assistant in the public defender’s office in my county, these stories are SO important to put out there! At my county jail, it’s just under $70 a night per inmate. Most of our incarcerated clients have underlying issues and many are homeless, have food insecurities, have mental health issues, and/or have addiction issues. The number of BIPOC people I see in a week is staggering in comparison. Bail amounts and punishments for similar crimes are much harsher on BIPOC people. I’m also married to a cop, and over the past 21 years, I’ve seen so many cops get off with barely a smack on the wrist. One who I knew personally was charged with sexual assault to minors, he lost his certification and cannot work in law enforcement in any state, but he didn’t serve ANY jail time, got a seriously reduced charge. Also he didn’t have to register as a sex offender. I was LIVID with this ruling as I am a child sexual assault survivor. My husband was too as the officer in question was his sergeant. Another sergeant in his department was getting ready to quit his police job and go work full time with a recovery mission. The mission decided that they no longer wanted him in their employ and he didn’t accept that. He was on duty and he drove well out of his jurisdiction and caused such a huge scene that the local cops were called. He was fired, but he was never charged with menacing or aggravated menacing. He also had a previous record of violent crimes that he managed to get dismissed.
The biggest indicator of crime and police brutality is socioeconomic status...if we invested money in ways that actually lifted people out of poverty, we'd see less and less of a need for enforcement of public safety.
Thank you vice!!! For highlighting the connection between the lack of education & how seemingly unrelated issues (in this example health ) can directly as well as indirectly potentially set up for a life of crime! Then this is all too often the culprit behind our poor decision making ability when it comes to our health. For black & brown/the poor as a whole. Knowing how our bodies work or at least a better understanding can help knowing what questions to ask when & what to ask.
I'm in Austin, Tx & it's frightening how often body cam evidence just "disappears" - & I live in a "top 10 most populous" city. Even IF brought to trial (which rarely happens in red state Tx.), the popo are ALWAYS acquitted (even with body cam footage) of things like major assault w/out provocation, resistance, etc. & even murder. I may be a white woman, but I still don't trust the ex-military popo, b/c once military, ALWAYS military, as in, EVERYONE is the enemy & you must treat them accordingly, rather than, innocent until proven guilty. PLEASE BAN EX-MILITARY FROM BECOMING COPS!! And don't let them have surplus military gear (why do city police need assault tanks?!)
I remember reading vets home from Iraq were found to have less excessive use of force complaints and shootings. In part, the frontline troops in Iraq had more strict rules of engagement than our domestic police. ... That's right, police have more leeway to use lethal force than our soldiers had in a war zone.
Also MRAPS arent tanks, basically just cheap swat vans. Many departments would rather save the money and get essentially the same thing via military surplus
I think you’re talking, as we say in the UK, bollocks. You’ll likely find that the majority of the cops with bad rap sheets, who are bullies, who pull guns too quickly, who judge too quickly, who use violence too readily, who write a ticket too quickly, have never served in the military. The standards set for young soldiers in the military are such that a lot of these negative traits will have been identified during recruitment (so they are turned away) or addressed during training. That is not to say that it applies to ALL ex servicemen and women who join the police, but the vast majority. They will likely be the more professional (well presented, timely, respectful, polite) beat officers in a police force. On the flip side, I think you’ll probably find that a lot of Police ‘bad apples’ likely failed to get into the military for the very reasons I mentioned above. In the military we don’t want the sorts of people who become bad cops because they don’t listen, they don’t do what they’re told to do, they fail to follow rules and regulations, they don’t think it applies to them, which sort of makes them purposeless as we head into war where following orders is sacrosanct. So I’d strongly suggest you review your POV about ex servicemen and women in the Police. As I said, not universally, but in the main they will be the better officers and the bad PoPo will be straight from school, failed military jocks/bullies with a god complex.
Being a white woman won't even protect you, haha. When I was a 17 y/o white girl I crossed the street to be with my dad who was talking to a cop as a witness to something that had happened on our street, and I guess it startled the police officer and he reached for his gun. I had to soothe his nerves. As a teenage girl.
The main problem is that the system has successfully made police brutality seem like a race issue, rather than what it actually is, a class issue. In this way, the system has successfully divided the people and continues with it's systematic oppression and murder of the mentally challenged and economically marginalized masses, irrespective of their race, creed or personal and religious beliefs.
One of the big problems with gun culture in this country is just how many have them for no good reason because they are ITCHING to use them against someone, but would never verbalize that (or maybe they would, and they're even more dangerous) in contrast it reminds me of the mindset about martial arts or hell even CPR: to learn it well with the goal to never NEED to use it The trouble with guns here is that nobody is trained to have that discipline and respect or even full knowledge of what they are dealing with, and it's purely a free range for power trips that end up with a body count And it takes longer to train to be a cosmetologist than it does to be a cop in this country.

Thats a great idea! It's so easy to say "ThAts A StaRt" when you have no idea how the world works. Where's the budget, where's the funding? People love to blame the police and their actions as unjustified. Did you know we as a society wouldn't need police if people could act civil and take accountability for their own actions. Thank you vice for this. I knew too many people, both black and white who's lives were stolen by police. One was shot simply bc his dog was lose while he was speaking to the officers. They shot the dog then got scared when he flipped out bc his dog was dead, and shot him too. Always for nothing. I'm from NC,it's rampant in rural areas and is hidden away. Cops will hurt anyone. They all think they are above the rest. Doesn't matter who you are, if they feel like killing you they'll do it, bc they don't expectations any reprocussion.
One of the failures of the BLM movement is that it makes the issue about black identity instead of the lack of oversight for police abuse of power in America. 31% of police unarmed victims are Black which is more than twice their population rate and therefore it is obviously deeply unjust, BUT 45% of unarmed police murder victims are whites - pretty much tilted to the rural poverty direction. All the other rates of murder combined look exactly like the rates of poverty by race in America. That's the police are directed at Black people, but rather POOR PEOPLE, and since America has caused poverty to be racially skewed (CRT elements insert here, justifiably), the police are killing poor people at these rates exactly. Poor rural whites have equal cause to be outraged, but BLM as a slogan has excluded them, and any chances of getting them to vote out the right-wing elements that cause this.
That’s because you assume BLM means White Lives Matter Less or Black Lives Matter more than white lives which is an absolutely egregious and disingenuous interpretation of the statement. The meaning of the slogan always meant Black Lives Matter too because the black population has constantly felt as if police did not trea them equally to whites, even when taking into account the income of black people. Black Lives Matter has brought attention to police brutality against white people MANY times while Republicans keep telling the victims to just comply and deepthroating the boots of every fucking police Union in the country, just BEGGING for more police funding

the "colour aspect" is inseparable from the topic at hand because this is the reason why these shootings are as common as they are to begin with. police brutality and race are intertwined issues
The police are afraid for their lives due to the unknowns of any case they are called to. There are justified killings and unjustified killings by police across all races. Of course all of the unjustified shootings should be prosecuted. I hope someday the police will be seen in a way that doesn’t instill fear and situations can be handled calmly without the need for deadly force, but we are still a long way off from that. Because we see so many killings in the media, people are scared that any cop could be bad and that makes shootings more likely.

Every state I've lived in the state police have a reputation as being overly militarized. In my interactions with them during traffic stops they have been far more aggressive and suspicious than local police. I've watched these guys commit dangerous traffic violations amongst the general public while not operating at code. During my time as a MP I attended a conference with several state troopers from multiple states, and the attitude I felt coming from all of them was, "its us vs them, and I wish they would try something because they're all doing something."
This is why, in my opinion, most state police troopers should have just enlisted and done their time against a real enemy instead of actively seeking to make every citizen they encounter a target.
ok. "real enemy" is arguable too but I get what you're saying.
@@jamarlatimore that is fair, but also an entirely different debate

This is a great series. So important to keep awareness growing.
The only problem i can see is long term this logic being placed on civilians, ie "why are you against facial recognition cctv on evey corner unless you have something to hide?"
I am very pro body cams for cops, but we need to be cautious we don't overstep!

Do you have any data that backs up that former military who become police are at a greater risk of abusing their authority vs non military?
What does police shootings have to do with the wrongly convicted feel like this story went off course
One of the big problems with gun culture in this country is just how many have them for no good reason because they are ITCHING to use them against someone, but would never verbalize that (or maybe they would, and they're even more dangerous)
in contrast it reminds me of the mindset about martial arts or hell even CPR: to learn it well with the goal to never NEED to use it
The trouble with guns here is that nobody is trained to have that discipline and respect or even full knowledge of what they are dealing with, and it's purely a free range for power trips that end up with a body count
And it takes longer to train to be a cosmetologist than it does to be a cop in this country.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely
Great reporting and interviews. Vice is top tier.
This truly paints law enforcement as opportunity murderers.
To serve and protect...themselves.
I've been almost shot just driving without a license I left America and live a great free like in Cambodia now ❤️🇰🇭❤️
"Care, compassion, comprehension, dignity, diplomacy, empathy, helping one another, joy, love & respect for one another should most definitely be in all of our hearts and minds forever!!!!" 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Wow! why has no one else ever thought of that??? It's just as simple as that!
@@Thaddeus28no. You have to practice too. Duhhhh
Most cops dont have the intelligence to deal with that ammount of power.
We need to demand cameras 📷on every officer, an outside departments to review cameras or one made up of the community and end qualified immunity. That's a start
Amazing how that works. If you want to dig deeper into the real issue look at your politicians, judges, district attorney's, general attorney's, the list goes on and on.
@@Gman-du7up way to try and shift the blame to other factors when murderous pigs are brutalizing and killing unarmed people all over the country every day
Nazi Germany would have loved you.
@@hjt123 How inconsiderate of me. I know it's hard to hear the truth.
Internal investigations and lack of body cameras is crazy
I can’t tell you how many times I called the police because of meth psychosis. I feel for the first family

Well done VICE
👏 amazing piece! Keep digging up these stories!
Kentucky can be quite scary.
Hell yes
One video and story that will always stick with me is that young guy crawling on his belly, completely unarmed. He was shot multiple times by an absolute psychopath who laughed about it.
If the officers are investigating each other then they recognise lies and half truths by experience.
Their own experiences and coaching.
The weird thing is that a lot of these rural people are pro-police too
Thank you vice for this.
Nothing like being able to investigate yourself
One of the failures of the BLM movement is that it makes the issue about black identity instead of the lack of oversight for police abuse of power in America.
31% of police unarmed victims are Black which is more than twice their population rate and therefore it is obviously deeply unjust, BUT
45% of unarmed police murder victims are whites - pretty much tilted to the rural poverty direction. All the other rates of murder combined look exactly like the rates of poverty by race in America. That's the police are directed at Black people, but rather POOR PEOPLE, and since America has caused poverty to be racially skewed (CRT elements insert here, justifiably), the police are killing poor people at these rates exactly.
Poor rural whites have equal cause to be outraged, but BLM as a slogan has excluded them, and any chances of getting them to vote out the right-wing elements that cause this.
all lives matter. the BLM morons who get mad that statement are ignorant and racist and selfish.
@@JimGamingTV there you go with the 'republicans'....you do realize that black lives matter was run by a black woman scam artist and did nothing to help, right? Those pesky republicans! Why didn't they say BLM, too? Not just BLM! Also, have black people ever looked in the mirror? I don't care how the black population feels....I go on facts and i see who is comitting most of the crimes and who actively speak ill will of police, for sure not helping themselves or anyone.
@@rndmprsn3532 Read a history book that goes beyond your average understanding of American history aka “I only understand American history up until the Civil Rights movement and nothing happened after that”
@@JimGamingTV i've read books. I also know current events, like what this video is about. But since you are here, do you have any book recommendations that will help me understand why overworked, underpaid, generally hated police officers sometimes use excessive force, on people of all colors? or people with swords? or gang members fleeing in stolen kias and nissans? or get a bit rough with felons that have guns?
Damn Kentucky told Los Angeles to hold my beer. Hot damn they’re dirty
I wish we could just get past the color aspect and look at all situations regardless of race
Unfortunately Vice is one of the most race-obsessed news sources out there.
the "colour aspect" is inseparable from the topic at hand because this is the reason why these shootings are as common as they are to begin with. police brutality and race are intertwined issues
America's prison industrial complex would cease to exist if things were done regardless of race. Organize.
As long as there are religious white nationalist fascist Republican Party standards in America it'll never happen.
