Part 2: 4A-GE ECU Upgrade - Road Tuning link ECU & Tach stuff

- I install a tach booster to make the original tachometer work with the coil on plugs. The adapter works...at first. I then drive the Corolla with the laptop logging the AFR's. Using the PC Link mixture map, I make a fairly decent road tune. While tuning, I run into a fellow Toyota enthusiast. Dustin has a LS swapped Cressida that mobs pretty fast! We show each other our rides and go on our merry way, each with a new friend. I drive during sunset until the 4AGE was needing very little fuel corrections. The next morning I take the FX16 to a local cars & coffee. It was of course the only FX16 out there and one of a handful Toyota's. We don't have many Toyota enthusiasts around my area :/ Plenty of people were interested, however, and it was nice to have the Corolla in good running order to display. Later that day, I try attempt to make the tachometer work above 6k rpms. To do this, I removed the gauge cluster and changed a resistor on the tach controller, 30k replaced with a 1k. This was an attempt to run the tach purely off the coil signal. The coil dwell time however did not translate well as a tach signal. I have a 3rd idea that was presented by my tuner which I will attempt in part 3.
Thanks for watching! Sub and like the video if you enjoyed this. Part 3 will be my road tune vs the dyno tuner!

I'd love to see your car on an episode of Regular Car Reviews
I can already hear him going “Brrrrrrr, but the good sort of ‘brrr’ that makes you forget you’re driving what is often colloquially referred to as a ‘shitbox’ by those less cultured than yourself... because you drive a toy-O-tah”
@@Alex-oq3mk that's quite an accurate impression
I'm sure Mr. Regular would be a fan and it would be a nice contrast to the base FX he drove previously.
Yes, please. Contact RCR. I would love to see this video
@@sushpants Do eeeet
Even without ever owning a 4age car, I can see, and hear, why so many people fall in love with them. My first car, back in the 90’s, was a 1990 Miata. While the engine did not make lovely sounds like a 4age, the low power and FR drivetrain layout made every second of driving enjoyable.
Really cool to watch your videos. I don’t see a lot of these older Toyotas being daily driven on the roads these days. Great to see the people enjoying and preserving the beauty and engineering of Japanese cars from this era.
I haven't seen a single GT-S out in the wild. There is only one sad looking FX that drives around our area. The classic Toyota's have such great character when you're behind the wheel.
That car is so clean. What an awesome project. Loving your format!
Thanks Boom!
Always enjoy your videos, and I can so relate to this having been through the process of adapting an ECU into a standard wiring loom, getting a tachometer to work, doing a road tune before a dyno tune - all on a white ITB powered Japanese hatchback that I use to compete in autocross events....😁
You talking about that sweet Charade? That's a nice ride and fancy driving too!
@@sushpantsthanks for the compliments, yes that's me and my Charade down in NZ. My dad had a few 4AGE Corollas like yours in my younger days, great cars, good memories. The Charade runs Megasquirt, I had to use a zener diode circuit to get my tacho working.
About time you uploaded! A boring Monday for me today, then you uploaded a new video
Spent my weekend editing for my people :D
@@sushpants hope you have a amazing weekend
I honestly can never get enough videos of your fx16
Thanks piliin! You're going to love part 3 :D
I dont get tired of the sound of that engine, love it
I love these FX16s, your car is what inspired me to buy my corolla hatch. It honestly has that same vibe the FX16 gave off but a modern car. Still, I really hope I can find one as clean as yours one day to add to my corolla hatch collection 😁
Your channel has been a solid source of inspiration and auditory delights ever since I found you doing the trumpet length testing. Finally got hold of a Mk1 AW11 with a 4AGE and look forward to giving it some love.
Keen to see part 3, keep up the good work.
2:34, those are the type of moments that make wrenching on cars satisfying. Love the cars and the videos, man!
I’m telling ya man. A quick gasket matching port job and moving the fuel delivery further up the stacks would help lay the ground work for the cams to properly breathe. I’m convinced that a good port job on the intake/manifold and exhaust/header and moving the injection would gain some very usable power increases.
A port job will definitely result in more power! I'm planning on doing cams/valves/springs, don't know about relocating the injectors. I'm not sure i have the room to move them further up.
Love these 4ages, wish i still had my ae92!!! Nothing can speak to how awesome of a job ur doing with keeping the factory cluster
Check and then log your alternator voltage, old alternators do weird things and cause all kinds of issues with aftermarket ecu’s.
Mine was dropping at higher rpms causing the fueling to change.
I swapped the original seized alternator back when i built the engine. I'm convinced tach booster can't "boost" quickly enough to keep up with the rpms. Part 3 is definitely going to have a functional tach :D
With your rev counter issue. You should be able to drive it direct from the link now that you have changed the resistor on it. Also try changing the tacho duty cycle on the link. Mine is set to 50% but yours might need more or less to make it work.
Love the videos and following the build with your corolla keep up the great work 😎👌🏻
so cool to see the progression of this car as the years go by
It’s come a long way :D
Great video! When I had under dash issues I wouldn't put back dash until I tested It out first. It saves alot time instead of putting on then off
That dash will stay out until it is working :D
Hey man, i just wanted to say that you inspired me with your videos to do my own 4AGE 20V setup, but mine will differ greatly from yours.
Here are the things i thought about so far.
-Toyota Celica T180 swap to 4A-GE 20V "Blacktop"
-Dual Map ECU setup(eco and maximum power)
-Dual exhaust system, i aim for something quiet
-Hypereutectic Pistons
And more, basically i am aiming for versatility and my personal tastes in what i find ideal.
Plus i am looking for ways to adapt newer systems like, cruise control, traction control and others.
Take care.
Great video! You should come to the Fremont 86 and Toyota first Friday meet!
I tried looking it up and didn't find anything about it.
Everything on his car looks new compared to my 87’ MR2. I’m so freaking jealous, lol.
You should have seen it when I first picked up the FX16! A lot was done to get it where it is today.
Hopefully you can get a fix for the tach, cars and coffee looked fun, I'm down to go to one of those some time
Hello from Ireland .nice car .I had the euro version GT ae82 great car .200.000 miles up on it .ha
LOL what the heck! You were in my hometown SR, CA. I’m sure the acronym will be easy to decipher. But anywho that’s cool how you’re local! We should definitely cruise in our corollas.
Man I hate that I didn't appreciate my fx when I had it brings back beautiful memories nice video!
hay my actual wheels are in this video @7:42 on the Previous owners car, awesome
YESSSS !!!!! PART 2 !!!!!!
You're dedicated and definitely an inspiration! 👍💪✊
Love the series man, keep it up.
I love your FX-16! I'm just a 17-year old High school student, but I aspire to own one, but it's quite rare here in South Africa, mostly 1.3L 12 valves (63hp only, so meh)
Great work you doing and enjoy video. I just buy a sprinter Toyota wagon 1999 . Doing some work on it
Use stock igniter for dash rpm signal
Link ecu asign one output to "tacho", connet to engine loom pin "igt"
It you running 20v ac sys
Ac amp also need rpm signal from "igt"
Using link g4 atom, will be upgrade to cop sys, this is my plan
i used ecu tach output with 300 or 470ohm pullup, 3 or 4ms tach pulse, and it woks fine
Love this car!
it-s so cool ! thank you
WHEN I SEE A CRESSIDA, I PRESS LIKE !!!!
Love your videos, can't wait for the next one :D
Part 3 is in production! It’s going to be some quality content, my friend!
Please do another driving video!
Yo love the content when is the new video dropping
Working on the next video right now should be up by next week.
Looking forward to it
beautiful car man
With the 1k resistor mod try removing the tach booster. My car has a standalone ecu and the output ran my oem tach (Toyota starlet) with only the resistor mod. However on a 2zz swap I did which used the oem ecu the same 1k mod didn't work. I had to build a tach signal amplifier instead. So maybe it's to do with the method that the standalone vs the oem ecu use for tach signal.
Great video as always 😊
Thanks!
Such a quality video
Sushpants question for you. What fuel were you using in your 20v for your dyno tests?
California - 91 octane pump gas. Not the best stuff out there.
@@sushpants This explains why your car pulls weaker dyno numbers. 20v are suppose to run 100 RON minimum.
@@sushpants Thank you!
@@zerohikari2685 This is due to differences in how octane is measured in the US. 91 octane here is about 95RON. Also our ratings are minimums so they usually test a point higher as a margin for safety. 92 octane is about 97RON. US 93 octane would be 100RON. I have the same California 91 octane in my area and my higher than stock compression 20v runs perfect stock ecu. 130hp is a very healthy number considering drivetrain losses. Also higher octane fuel does not cause a motor to make more power. It just allows it to run more advanced timing/boost without knocking.
@@SteelSub 93 is not 100 RON 95 would be. That's an easy thing to check btw because RON is always 5 more octane than US. And yes it does make more power. The ECU in the Blacktop and Silvertop will retard the timing if it senses less than optimal octane levels. This is proven. Blacktop whp should be between 135 and 138HP on 100 Octane on trabsaxle drivetain.
Please go check PadOnWheel's Dyno numbers for the Blacktop.
oooh yeah!
Hey sushpants. I have an 07 Toyota Yaris hatchback. I have found a set of TRD springs I’m going to pair with my coilovers. I know our cars aren’t the same but I want something I can really take around the corners and track and have fun with it. Would you recommend doing suspension first (I have wider wheels and lighter wheels now over the stock steel wheels and it’s improved handling by a lot) or a header and exhaust set up. I have a cold air intake already but eventually will switch to customs 1nzfe ITBS.
I love your videos! Is the LinkECU setup for AlphaN or something else? I'm very curious about the details of how you've configured your ECU. MAP vs. MAF vs. TPS? Does the link have altitude compensation in your setup?
Thanks RyuMoto! The link is AlphaN and it has an internal baro sensor for altitude.
Hey! Does anyone know whats the name on the rims is, on the corolla? Or which manufacturer makes the rims? I've tried to find them, but without any luck
I'd love to see the results in the dyno
It’s part 3! Video should be ready by Sunday!
@@sushpants Nice
В мене також Тойота Corolla 4AGE Довольно шустра удобна машина правда немає такіх вожможностей її так напічкать як у вас.
Tachs wire better put it on the tach by the indicator of the back board IG-
Коллектор выпускной надо какой-то поинтереснее поставить. HKS , Apexi , FGK. 4-2-1. .
I failed at the resistor mod too lol
Im still saving more money for my 4age 20v ( i haven't bought it yet because i had no job for a while)
I hope you replaced the original resistor
wow your car has 260k miles and still looks in good condition, what did you do?
I did everything! I have a another video series planned to go over how my Corolla turned into what it is today.
Hey I have a ae82 with a 5afe and auto trans from 1zz but it has an electronic speed sensor. How can i make the old cable speedometer work with this transmition?
I don't think you should have changed the resistor - especially beyond say 5K ohms - because it was working find before, which means the problem is not with it, itself... I would contact the manufacturers of the adapter for assistance\solutions... PS: Since I saw that your car has gotten coils for the first time, I wanted to guess that you'd get between 5 & 10 more HP than you would with just the ECU tune - AWESOME... I can't wait to see the data... =]
Really nice build!! I do enjoy the content that you put out. I would just like to ask what radiator are you using, since I am looking for a radiator for my AE92 that has a 20v silvertop swap in it? Thank you in advance!!
Hey sushpants wanted some help with my 4age 20v blacktop I want it to be tuned just a piggy back to make her a little quicker any advice would be apreciated
imagine BMW e36 323i vs This FX16GTBlacktop would be cool both of them have sama power
New upload ❤️❤️❤️
That headrest looks a bit low, no?
Hey man love the videos! Looking for a 4age for myself to swap in to my corolla but how did you shop around for your 4age? And where did you end up buying through, if you don't mind me asking?
Dope!!!!!
does your link ecu have knock control? looking for an ecu for my 7age 20v
How to clean 4age blacktop throttle bodies.
Hey that's my wagon @7:31! One of my friends sent me the link to this video because of that. I have to say, just from this video, you produce some great content and I can't wait to watch your other videos. What's awesome is that you're local! We should definitely get together sometime! Feel free to hit me up on Instagram at Nitro218.
part 3 soon?
Part 3 is all filmed and will come out soon. I took a tangent and solved the tachometer issue. Tach video will be out this weekend and then part 3 will drop.
@@sushpants awesome mate! looking forward to see your progress
What tires are you running?
Bridgestone RE-71R’s
@@sushpants How is the wear?
@@Cypress_green The wear isn't too bad and the tires last pretty long if you rotate them regularly. Otherwise the fronts will wear 2x as fast as the rears. They're also friggin' loud. The grip, however, is otherworldly!
You should get the tachometer like takumi got when he got his 20 valve swap that would be sicc
That would be awesome! But my engine doesn't rev high enough yet :D
That tacho is kinda rare i think
You don't need a tach when you can rev to 11,000rpm....
Just buy a MSD 8920 tach adapter
🖒
How much I hate electrical problems in cars nobody will ever understand
i can't tell you how many headaches i got reading wiring diagrams...
I only come here for the sound, induction porn is how I like to describe it.
need some smaller gloves lol
Хоть бы кто то из рашен, так тюнели эти моторы😔
The problem is it’s a Toyota. Get a civic and everything will work fine and you will make more power🤣😝🤣😝
Civic fan be gone we like Corolla better.
Hey Jonathan, have you done anything to your civic after our last tie breaker 😬? It’s the extra valves in my Corolla, no amount of vtec can make up for the civic’s lack of breathy holes. Toyota #1 💪🏻
sushpants yes actually I have changed a lot! Literally the entire car! Looking forward to a rematch
