This reminds me of the morning I left for basic training. My dad ; WWII ,fixed me a full breakfast at 0430 in the morning and we sat and we talked . He pressed a $50 in to my hand and he shook my hand and hug me as I left. That was the first time I realized he was talking to me like a grown man. That was the last thing I remembered when I left his hospital room after I removed life support . Tomorrow is his birthday and I have had this song on repeat while I drank my coffee and thought about him. I hear my last son moving in his room getting ready to head out to work. Thanks dad

James's father was in kidney failure & they couldn't find a donor. James wrote this song as a goodbye to his dad, he shot this video in 1 take & that is his dad. Thankfully after this song was released there was a distant cousin that turned out to be a match & his dad is doing well.

It was actually his sister who wrote most of it as a poem to their father and he put it to music. It's a truly beautiful piece of art.
Both James and his dad were officers in the British Army: James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. The line; "we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was said by James to his dad as he was leaving for the Kosovo war, in the Balkans in '99. At the end of the recording, James and the crew were all in tears. His dad snarked "I'm not dead YET"!! and had to console them all. After releasing this song, James gave all proceeds to the British charity "Help For Heroes", which aims to help veterans. What a champ!!

This was a tribute to his dad. At the time of his recording this his father was dying. There was a lot of love between the two as you can see in the video. I am sorry that isn't the case with you and your dad.
I know you wanted a father growing up, but you are now the father in that song. One day your kids will sing this song in their hearts for you.

First, you deserve the subscribers. Next, someone raised you right, and you obviously learned to be a real man - open, honest, and able to share wisdom. This song always hurts. My dad had full onset Alzheimers at 54. I was his caregiver at 19. I never had an adult conversation with him after he was ill. It was a quick onset, and I spent the next eight years visiting his bedside often. He didn't know me, but I knew he liked me - and that is what I cherish still at 60.

@tw9165 thank you. It was rough, but in the end, it made me a better man. I am excellent in a crisis, have abundant empathy and compassion, and am often told that I grew into an exact version of my dad. He was awesome at being human, so it is a good thing.
as a British vet my self I've been in some dark places. But when you can share your emotions with other veterans even things like this video, it certainly makes your life that little bit better even for a short time until the next video. Havent spoken to mine in 20 years, like you i also know where he lives but i will never make amends. Some things can never be forgiven. I was blessed to have a step father for 30 wonderful years who treated me as his own, it is he who i grieved for and he who i will always see as my father.
Nobody should be able to judge you for how you feel about your father or the fact that you have no contact with him. You have your reasons and you're doing the best for YOU and your family! Best of luck ❤️
the thing that always gets me is when his dad holds James' arm and rubs it with his thumb. Like you know everything you need to know about what kind of man and father he is in that simple action.
James Blunt and his father were both in the British army (Captain and Colonel, respectively) When they both deployed, "I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was something they agreed to before seeing each other off to war. They both saw combat in Afghanistan. The proceeds from this went to 'Hope for Heros', a military charity.
Just to say, the family name is Blount. James reduced it down to Blunt.
Neither of them served in Afghanistan. James served in Kosovo. His father had not only retired by 2001 but his unit the Army Air Corps didn't deploy to Afghanistan until 2006

I don't know where you get your info, but it's completley wrong they never said this to each other while going off to war, and none of the served in Afghanistan, James' father was too old to serve there and was already retired from active service, and James served in the Kosovo war never went to Afghanistan.

As a divorced father of 2 as well as a step father who raised 2 more beautiful kids for 13 years, you sharing that you almost wish you hadn't met your dad....... NEVER blame yourself for your dad's decisions. That amazing man(whom legally became you father) without question is the reason you are who you are today.... He may not be your biological dad but in my eyes hes your dad and when the day comes to say goodbye, you will then know he was and will always be your dad...
He is the man that guided you to now guide your son to be as man...

My dad wanted a son and he got two daughters, I was the second born, so he never wanted me, he put all of his time, energy and money into my sister, growing up he never told me he loved me or even showed it and up til this day, I have had four children, I live blocks from my sister and he still doesn't visit me or my children, he calls my sister weekly and never calls me. I had a lot of resentment for a long time, than my mum died, she was my best friend and I had a clarity moment. I realised that life is too short, and I wasn't going to die being the one in the wrong. So I let it all go, I call him one a fortnight and when he is at my sisters, I will go see him.
Holding on to so much anger, never did me good, now I can die knowing I tried, I was in the right.
Now I have a terminal illness, and I'm so glad that when I go, I will not be going with all that hate in my heart, letting it go, made me a better parent and I learnt from my dad's mistakes, I make sure my children know that they are loved and they are all treated equally. I'm only 41 and since forgiving and being this better person, I am now beating this illness and it's for my children that I hang on every day.
This is the first time I have watched your channel and I'm now subscribed.
Don't let the past weigh you down, you are the better person, you have his address, write him a letter, tell him how you feel and forgive, you will feel lifed and even if he doesn't respond, you know that you have done the right thing. And you learnt from him, how not to be a father, you have become a better dad than he could have ever been.

I can relate. Parents are people too, & they make bad decisions. Just remember, You are the better part of him & the love you feel, the yearning you long for is already there in your heart. Take this love & wrap it around your family & yourself. I had to learn to toughen up & see my dad's hate towards me, I blamed myself for too long., but as time went by, I realized my dad's hate was his hurt & guilt & that it wasn't me, it was his own mind clogged up with layers of misery he could not get past. You are here for a reason, to conquer this loss & turn it around for you & him. Continue to write to him, because in his last days, he will know the truth..the truth being He avoided his responsibility due to a cold heart & a clogged mind., but yet you still was there for him. Just know we survive this & it just makes you stronger in your love to your family & to yourself. Let go & as the song says, I'm not your son, I'm not my father, we are just 2 grown men saying goodbye. You are the link, that will break the vicious cycle of his mental incompacity. Loved Iam, but you can't beat James Blunt. His style, intensity, timing, etc. make this the most emotional song I have ever heard. Iam made me cry, but his style is more casual and although it was intense, it didn't beat out James
I think the writer can usually give us a better version.
I liked Iam's version but this is the one that makes me cry. I felt empathy for the kid but James is just next level and I can feel his pain.
@@jackwhitbread4583 Yes. I felt SYMPATHY for Iam. I felt bad for him because I knew he was hurting, but James makes us empathize with him and makes his pain our own. When James sings the song, I am right back at my mom's deathbed. Iam touched my heart - but James shatters my soul.
After James served in Kosovo, he was a captain in the queen's cavalry. Both he and his dad were serving Officers. James shows his emotions through his songs and voice. His father is old school, stiff upper lip. He pats James' arm at the end of video. They wanted James to use autotune, he refused as he wanted it to be real and raw. It was filmed in one take. At the end all the engineers were in tears and his dad had said "why is everyone crying, I'm not dead yet".
James's dad apparently used the phrase you're not my son, I'm not your father when James was deployed to Kosovo.
His dad received a kidney transplant from a distant relation on the other side of the world and survived. That's his real dad in the video.

In 1999, Blunt volunteered to join a Blues and Royals squadron deploying with NATO to Kosovo. Initially assigned to carry out reconnaissance of the North Macedonia-Yugoslavia border, Blunt's troop worked ahead of the front lines, locating and targeting Serbian forces for the NATO bombing campaign.

As emotional as this makes me... Seeing James and seeing people in this case of course especially men I myself don't know the bond myself. Family bonds in general. I understand it for other people but not for myself. Total strangers happen to feel closer, more relatable to me. For my experience looking at my parents. Better don't have them than have bad ones. Not everyone should have or be allowed to have kids. Hug to you man.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I was raised by my " stepfather ". He really was the only father I knew since I could remember. My biological father came into my life when I was 13. And like you, I always wondered if I should've let him into me life to begin with. He wasn't ever there for me; even after "reuniting " . I don't know your full story; but you did mention that you had someone to look up to . After many years of biological dad continuing to let me down; I decided to tell him ... that I would always be willing to be a part of his life, but it was up to him to reach out to me. I couldn't keep on hoping that he'd be a father to me. It hurt too much. We owe ourselves self respect. Even if that means we have to break ties with family/friends. It's not easy; nor is it selfish but it's necessary for your own mental health .

As someone who only has his grandfathers influence to learn on, I'm sorry you went through something like I did. I am in the opposite though, my mother way never there for me. I lived a life with an already broken father and no mother. It isn't a life I would wish on anyone.
Hey bro, greetings from across the pond 😊🇬🇧 The background to this song is firstly James and his Dad are both ex-British military. James saw active duty in amongst other places, Kosovo.
A few years back James’ Dad was diagnosed Stage 4 kidney Cancer which I’m sure in 99% of cases is a terminal diagnosis. Well at this traumatic time James’ sister composed a pure and handed ut to him, James took this and used it as the basis to this song. He decided to record it rather than speak with his Dad face-to-face (battle-hardened or not even the toughest guys can find heart-to-hearts a tough gig I guess). Due to the success of the song a distant relative of Jame’s dad came forward and after tests it was determined they were a perfect match for a kidney donation procedure, James’ dad underwent the kidney transplant and ALL IS NOW GOOD!! 😊 On a related note Iam Tongi auditioned for 2023’s American Idol with this song after HE’D LLOST HIS DAD, he made it all the way to the season FINALE where he appeared in stage to DUET THIS WITH JAMES ……… and he WON!! Their duet is probably even more EMOTIONAL than this,

The “I’m not your son, you’re not my father” part is due to a British ‘stiff upper lip’ love between a father and son, both former military, so they train the emotions out of you. My dad is the same, but I know he loves me. This at the time was James expressing his feelings before his dad passed away of kidney cancer, but thankfully he did in fact “chase the monsters away” with this song. A relative saw this and donated their kidney and years later Blunt Snr is still alive. And all the earnings of this song went to ‘help for heroes’ charity. ❤

One of the most important songs of our time. i just got a chance to say goodbye to my dad. I have two brothers one decided to join me the other did not. Both made the right decision for themselves. The one that went thought he was going there to forgive my dad for my dad's sake. What he doesn't realize is that forgiveness is really for the forgiver. It's a gift we give ourselves to stop being angry and sad and enjoy our lives without the regret of not having a dad. God Bless you in whatever you decide to do. I was lucky my Dad was not perfect but he was lovely and definitely a man's man, he passed a couple of decades ago and my biggest regret was not visiting and seeing him enough in the latter years of his life. He was in Burma during World War 2, fighting the Japanese in the jungle, quite near the Bridge on the River Kwai and when I went to Thailand in my early 20's, my Dad asked me to go and pay my respects to the war dead, prisoners of war buried near the bridge, so I went in his stead. The Thai's recognised my British accent and the whole tone of the visit changed to one of utmost respect for my father fighting for that regions freedom from the Japanese, as the Thai's lost 1000's that were just thrown into the river by the Japanese, so I travelled on the train over the bridge that the POWs had built and I sat with the monks in the jungle for a bite to eat, a visit and a moment in time I will never forget.

I listened to and watched your honest reaction.As a woman,my Fathers was so mean to me,and treated me horribly. Such a beautiful song. I had parents but they abandoned me and my brothers and sisters. We were shipped off to an orphanage. Some kids would scare us and say that there were monsters in the closet and under the bed. I still have problems sleeping because of that. This for some reason makes me think of my childhood. 😢

Paused the video to make a rare comment. You said all sons want to know their Dad is proud of them and all Dad’s want to make sure their sons are ok and will be successful in life (paraphrasing). Might I humbly suggest that a Dad is also looking at his children, daughters and sons, and praying to the heavens that when his time comes they will be proud of him. If I’m being honest, if you raise your kids right, you know they’ll be alright. When medical issues hit and you don’t know how much time you have left, the singular validation of your life can only come from your kids. Just my opinion.
My oldest son never met his father and it bothered him until he met a half brother and half sister via social media and found out that his dad was "not a nice person". When he found out what kind of a man his father was he thanked me for not exposing him to the abusive person his biological father was (I never trash mouthed him). If your bio dad is truly not a nice person, concentrate on your children just as you are doing and let him go. If it's just a personality difference then try to make amends and apply a little tolerance for someone just different than you. Life isn't forever. Once he's gone there is no making amends.

The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures such raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things we may want to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........Thank you for such a heartfelt reaction, & sharing your story 💗

Damn, as a man that didnt have guidance from my father growing up, this song hits hard. All I want for my children to know that I loved and guided them the best I could.

I too had a very difficult time with my dad but i realized at age 54 that he too must know and must regret alot of things.
We as men never let our feelings out...

My bio dad questioned if I was even his & then his wife treated me like shit. My mom met the man I called dad when I 2 & as far as I'm concerned that is my dad period. Any man can be a father, it takes someone special to be a dad.

I know exactly what you are conveying about your dad. My kids have an awful dad and as they grew up it is more evident than ever that they saw all of his monstrous actions and his malignant narcissism. He is and always was severely abusive and its a struggle for all of us even 35+ years later❤😢

My dad didn't talk to my grandfather for 35 years until he died. Now my father has lost his opportunity to come clear and relieve the emotional package. He is an absolute wreck unable to show emotion because it would actually destroy him.
My father gave me enough reasons to turn my back on him but leaving is at least for me the bigger loss.

It is true that sometimes it's best to sever bonds with people that act with an ill heart.
But a father is a figure that has a great weight in our mind. And having any negative feelings towards that, it's a hindrance that's very hard to remove.
It's my gut feeling, that your father still lives in your heart, draining it in the background.
There's no reason to invite a negative influence to your life, but it's never too late to forgive, really forgive, and show kindness. Even if there's a dragon in front of you.
You are responsible for your peace of mind, do what you must.

Hello. THIS was the first time You showed up on my screen, but I have heard this song several times. THIS time I was sad for you instead of the emotional video. I am so sorry that you are still in obvious pain, about your absentee parent.. Life can be so extremely unkind. I am 73, chose to marry a guy who ended up making me miserable for many years), stayed in it because we had children (another huge mistake), finally divorced, after 25 years in a home that I loved, it burned to the ground taking everything, and the unthinkable is that I had two daughters and lost both of them to iilless many years apart. If it wasn't for my faith in God, I know I would live in misery from all I have been through. Instead I chose to keep going and find joy and fun with God by my side. I do still have my firstborn son who is wonderful. I believe that we all have a Heavenly Father who is with us throughout our entire lives. The older I get, the more I understand that God is my Rock and He does answer prayers. We just have to listen for them. May you find the release from the emptiness and sorrow of your past, and rejoice in your children who are with you. Take care and thank you for your service to our country. 🤗🙏💙❤🇱🇷

Your reaction is the same as mine - I wish I could have a dad i'd miss and want to make proud. Mine left when I was 12, and my mother became an alcoholic and died due to him going to another woman. he is now divorcing that woman, too. We've spoken about 4 times in 25 years. Feel your pain bro.

I understand very well your feelings and what we really sorry because I could say I was abandoned by my father when I was 6 years old...I found him again when I was 39 , I forgave him because now I realized that he wasn't prepared to be a father, humans make mistakes , nobody is perfect. He passed away about 5 years ago , I still keep on my memory some vague moments when he was living with me , my sister and my mom . Nothing to forgive, nothing to forget. Next time dad !! 😢
1986, my dad passed away after a seven year battle with cancer. In the hospital, he lay in a morphine induced coma but still moaned in pain...As he laid there his lungs would get congested so we siblings would take turns patting his chest to keep the fluid from settling. As I sat there with him, everyone else went into the hallway, and I leaned down to him, whispering..."It's ok daddy, we'll be ok, you can go home now". That was the last thing I said to him. He was 42 and I was 18, and I never heard him tell me that he loved me.... Parents please tell your children that you love them, don't force them to wonder for the rest of their lives if you did or not.

Truth be told I didn't have any type of father figure really to look up to growing up. But I did learn from the mistakes of my father. He showed me what not to do. lol So I guess I can be thankful.

I also didn't have a father figure growing up, yesterday I met my half brother for the first time, he is 10 Years younger than I am, my father abandoned my mother when I was 2, I never knew my father at all, I found out yesterday when I met my half brother that he died a few years back, I felt so sad and I don't know why, I was visiting my mother on the weekend with my daughter, we decided to get tattoos, we walked into the tattoo shop, they had afternoon openings, when I talked to the artist, he asked my name and when I told him he said ,that was his grandmother's name, I asked him who his father was, it was also my father, not knowing my father left a hole in my heart that will never mend, my mom did the best she could. And now I just found a half brother ❤ I'm in my 50s and never had a relationship with my father, but this song crushed me. 😢
