The Great Wall of China is a 13,000-mile dragon of earth and stone that winds its way through the countryside of China. As it turns out, the wall’s history is almost as long and serpentine as its structure. Megan Campisi and Pen-Pen Chen detail the building and subsequent decay of this massive, impressive wall.

wunademones I would consider that fact pretty significant. The Great Wall is considered a staple of Qin greatness but most might not realize that Qin rule only lasted 15 years and a lot of the construction is carried out by the succeeding Han dynasty.

The most important thing that the Great Wall of China can teaches us is the strongest defense still can't stop the internal collapse. In fact, those dynasties which tried to rely on the Great Wall, including Qin, Han, and Ming, were overthrow mainly because of a domestic upheaval rather than barbarian invasions. For Qin and Ming empire, their policy of strengthening the wall led to the social instability and the government bankruptcy, which then caused the rebellions and uprisings. These empires did everything they could in order to protect themselves from outside invaders, but these policies and attempts accelerated their death instead. How ironic it is!!

The farther west you go, and farther into the desert, the less the walls look like the one you see in all the pictures. They had an ingenious way of taking advantage of the moisture in reeds, combining them with dirt to create a solid mud structure. The resulting wall looks like a long mound, and is not very tall. Still amazing to see in the desert and far from anywhere in particular.

First of all, wonderful pronunciation! Also, what's even more interesting is that it wasn't always seen as this great symbol of culture and pride for most Chinese; in fact, many saw it as a symbol of the oppressive feudal governments in the past, and it's relatively recently that we've taken much more pride in it. I really hope it can be preserved well, because the amount of tourists it gets is really bad for the wall, structurally.

But take into account that there were periods such as the warring states period were China wasn't unified at all, and some states built their walls in order to fend off neighboring states. China's border has also varied over time, so it was logical for them to build new sections of the wall as well. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, because it's just an opinion after all

+unrealsimon93 It's a joke. It's a common 9/11 joke to say "jet fuel can't melt steel beams" to joke about the 'inside job" theory. The phrase changed a lot, and became a meme. "Jet fuel can't melt dank memes,". It changes to suit the historical situation. For example, when talking about the Siege of Constantinople, it's said "Ottomans can't melt Byzantine walls, 1453 was an inside job".
Same with the Chinese and the Ming. "Ming generals can't melt stone walls".
      tl;dr: it's a joke about inside jobs.

I think this video is really downplaying the benefit of the Great Wall. Think about this: if the wall stopped 999 small to medium scale nomadic raids, but failed to stop 1 concerted, huge scale invasion intended to overthrow the ruling dynasty, is it really fair to call the Great Wall a failure?
Plus, the Great Wall has many other economical & social functions, which has been well documented & discussed in books.

I visited the Great Wall a month ago. In Mandarin there is a saying, which is also carved onto a tablet displayed at a ruined part of the Great Wall, "不爬长城非好汉" which literally translates to "If One does not climb the Great Wall, he is not a true man"
And I agree. The one I went to was the Old Great Wall. 20 minutes away from the train station, which has almost no tourists. The entrance was the very spot the rebel army in the breached and the ruins have been overtaken by vegetation. some of the most amazing sights in China, coupled with some of the most treacherous steps and heights that can make you question your sanity. I strongly suggest everyone to take a spin at this place. Surmount that and no need for leg day for a while.

It was unwatchable to me. First season was borderline. I couldn't roll my eyes hard enough when Marco Polo drew the trebuchet and gave it to Kublai. Like it was some privileged European technology the Mongols knew nothing about.
When in reality, the Mongols had the best engineers on the planet. And there was nothing Marco Polo[a merchant's son] could tell them about builing siege engines.
Also about the warning Marco gave not to attach the "Lion Hearted" European s. You mean the guys we just ran over a decade before? Those guys??
Europeans were not a mystery to the Mongols at this point in history. They knew all about them.
The second season was somehow even worse. They made Kublai seem like an easily manipulated fool. I only got 3 episodes in that season so I'm not sure how it progressed from there.
But when Kublai was manipulated into killing that child, I was done. It became too stupid for me.
The show just seemed sloppily written. The only good character I could see was Kublai's wife.

actually, it was not the manchu clan which overthrew the ming dynasty. it was a rebel leader called li zi cheng.
In April 1644, Li's rebels sacked the Ming capital of Beijing, and the Chongzhen Emperor committed suicide. Li proclaimed himself the Emperor of the Shun dynasty.
After Li's army was defeated on 27 May 1644 at the Battle of Shanhai Pass by the combined forces of the defecting Ming general Wu Sangui and the Manchus, Li fled from Beijing towards his base in Shaanxi.
