The most important thing that the Great Wall of China can teaches us is the strongest defense still can't stop the internal collapse. In fact, those dynasties which tried to rely on the Great Wall, including Qin, Han, and Ming, were overthrow mainly because of a domestic upheaval rather than barbarian invasions. For Qin and Ming empire, their policy of strengthening the wall led to the social instability and the government bankruptcy, which then caused the rebellions and uprisings. These empires did everything they could in order to protect themselves from outside invaders, but these policies and attempts accelerated their death instead. How ironic it is!!
Ching Hung Lin this is a classic example of Survivorship bias. If they didn’t have the wall, they might’ve been overthrown long before the internal collapse.

But take into account that there were periods such as the warring states period were China wasn't unified at all, and some states built their walls in order to fend off neighboring states. China's border has also varied over time, so it was logical for them to build new sections of the wall as well. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, because it's just an opinion after all
@@andyzhang9928 Well most of your comment was likely based on solid facts and it was actually exactly what I figured had contributed to the erratic nature of the wall. I just hadn't put two an two together. Thanks for the info!
It was Li Zicheng's peasant army that overthrew the Ming Dynasty, not the Manchu Dynasty, which took the opportunity to enter the Central Plains after losing both.
Here is a small interesting fact, when the five barbarians (around year 300) entered the heart land of China, they built part of the great wall themselves to keep other barbarians out. Sometimes you have to like those people.
The explanation contains two errors. 1. The Wall reaches its eastern end at Shanhaiguan, which is located far to west of the Korean Peninsula. The map picture provides an inaccurate depiction of the facts. 2. The Korean Peninsula was never part of the Qing Dynasty's territory. The depiction of the Qing Dynasty's territory on the map is completely incorrect.

Why did she said gengis khan and his SON kublai khan, isn't kublai is his grandson?!
because they dont know shit
Also if you ask a Mongolian they would say that the name should be pronounced as Chengish Han .
close enough
Chengis not ish, Mongolian here. :P It means God, Sky, Horizan, or mighty.(all those words sort of mean the same thing since the sky and horizan is thought to be the folklore, mighty sky god, tengri)
Joel Battan Ya sorry my bad i made a spelling mistake in my original comment. Interestingly in many indian languages including hindi and bengali he is called as chengis han only.
I've always thought the wall was just a single long structure. It never occurred to me that there would be more than just one line of it; that there are several areas rather than one strip.
Wow hundreds of thousands lives to build this gigantic wall :( in Past time~ with no technology~ Big respect~ and Now the wall become such an icon~
History is just Amazing 💕
I know you probably meant no modern technology..... but they still had technology
The entrance and finishing songs are só nice
Thanks!
+Gav Cantrell Who are you?
+Daniel Dourado The composer.
+Gav Cantrell Nice! Is there a full version of it ?
Unfortunately not, I just wrote to the video. But thanks for your interest!
I was just there a few days ago. Wow its huge AF breathtaking and unreal
00:38 Correction: It's separated as Turkish and Xiong-nu is wrong. Xiong-nu itself includes Turkic tribes anyway. Their greatest leader Modu Chanyu is a Turkic.
Chinese is such a beautiful language! Very soothing and relaxing! Too bad I'm learning Spanish right now, so I can't learn this beautiful language
I never knew that the wall had so many other walls breaking off from it.
0:49 That is a very cutesy drawing of what is perhaps the most hated ruler in chinese history.
another important purpose for the Great Wall is to control the trade between the han chinese (inside the wall) and the northern nomads. without the strict control of trade, the gov would lose tremendous among of tax income
I'll bet Trump slaps his salami to this video.
For anyone who doesn’t know.
The great wall of China did actually work and served its purpose quite well.
Minder You are wrong.
I learned all of this years ago after watching Mulan
"it's not a great wall it's an alright wall."

Today now,a person wrote "Dahyun x Minho oppa!" On the wall when they're a sign said "No writing"
i have a pen - pen

Hello people who see this today u probably saw this video 4-6 years ago but great to see u amazing people
People often mistake that the Chinese Walls are completely defensive, however, with the newest archaeological evidence found in (Outer) Mongolia, there are Walls that were actually far more north than today's, used as a forefront attempting to keep xiongnu even thousand miles away from current walls.

Rising of the Shield Hero, good anime. 👍
I doubt it. She sounds white and she needs to pause every time she says a Chinese word as if she's trying to remember what tone to use.
@@sammyso4940 there isn't a thing like speaking white. her accent sounds american but she can be any other race.

Man she practiced alot on the chines words before this. And thank you for it. Integrity is rare. Thank you to you.
My wall will be bigger and better and cost more lives. ;)
How many lives have been cost building all of Trump's current structures? :)
+Donald Trumps Hairpiece Mexican lives or American lives!
+LunarX if trump wants to use his own money to build the wall im cool with that.
+Donald Trumps Hairpiece
Take note Donny, whenever you build a transcontinental wall, the people you try to keep out will eventually invade and take over.
Prepare for Gengis Alberto Cãn
+王力 He was joking, you know....
I had no idea it was so convoluted with so many branches and sections. I always thought it was a singular wall
Ted ed is seriously my favourite channel!
Give me 20 years and I can build a small part of the Wall.

Thanks, I did
I did. 👋
Thanks!
Qin Shi Huang was like "We're going to build a wall and the locals are going to pay for it."
Ya, that is what he did.
I have an idea, let's build a time machine, and take the builders back to our era, tricking them that this is China and they'll start building the wall with Mexico.
JK.
Horrible idea. Anyways most people won't agree with it.
if you have a time machine, you just need to sink the ship of colonizers from other cuntries, in this way there would be only one country on the two american continents, and you wouldn't have worry about illegal imigrants any more.

So its not really a wall, but many walls?
Yep. But many sections are connected to each other, so it's still the biggest monument mankind has made :-)
Christian Jiang Ah ok. I wonder if it's possible to walk the entire length of the main part of the wall, or is it unsafe.
***** You are not allowed to go to some parts, they are closed because it's very dangerous (you know, they are not so well maintained). But it's already enough to visit the sections opened to the tourists, they are wonderful!
+dbsirius Today the wall is broken in some places. So you cannot walk to whole thing anymore.
+Christian Jiang It wasn't built as a monument, it was built as a functional structure and as such it's nowhere near as large as the US Interstate Highway system.
Attack on titans: prequel
This Video helped me with my Major assignment thank you for making this ( don't worry I added this to my reference list)
Interesting, I never knew the wall was so segmented
Little mistake found ted-ed! 2:35 Korean peninsula was not a territory of the Qing dynasty. The Joseon dynasty was there before occupied by japan.
This is a very detailed video! It answered all the questions I had in mind. I would definitely recommend this video to anyone curious about the great wall.

LOL, WALL MAN TRUMP

Salute to Ted Ed, I have learnt so much watching their videos, still so much to learn

when i went to the great wall i saw people(tourists) write their names in almost like, every single stone of the wall. those people are... I dont know who they are but they are destroying the wall

But why was it built like that shape though? In some areas it looks more fortified but on others there's just a huge unfortified gap.
