Do you want to prevent future East Palestine level train disasters? Pass a bill to reimburse for damages out of the bloated executive compensation packages of the CEO and his executive team (and that goes for the boards of directors, as well.) That's how to make Safety become an actual priority for companies - hit the wallets of the bosses.
Wolff implies that disasters (crashes, derailments, etc) somehow are 'profitable' for the common carriers. Big lie! Putting "profits first" is not in conflict with operating safely. The two concepts are not mutually exclusive, but striving for operating safely cannot eliminate crashes, never has and never will.
If it wasn't profitable, the railroad industry would invest in preventative maintenance. Yours is the big lie, as proven by over 1,000 derailments every year.
How do we know that what happened was the result of Norfolk Southern avoiding safety regulations? I’m not going to speculate whether this was the case or not. I’m just wondering how Wolff knows before anyone else.
since 2017 30,000 rail road workers have been laid off and the time allotment to inspect cars and repair them reduced every year - while the length of trains grows and the number of engines on the rails have been growing. More work, less employees, same technology. Something taking a back seat.

As far as I know, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant project is a typical project. From which several stations were built. But the accident happened only at one station. And if you read the IAEA report, you wouldn't ask stupid questions. All the blame was shifted to untrained personnel and violation of safety regulations.

Great points! No reward for safety ever only for maximizing profits
You get a handshake for being safe.
Something that is 100% preventable is not an accident... at best it's negligence.

Safety second
Freedom first
Yes, freedom to make blood money profits certainly is first in most Wall Street traded corporations.
Profit is their number one priority. They couldn't be in business otherwise because that's how capitalism works.
