- [EU S14 E43] The Economics of US Labor Struggles and Gaza
In this week’s episode of Economic Update, Professor Wolff discusses the economic repercussions of Western sanctions and how the retaliations they provoke. We then turn to the latest labor strikes and wage & benefit gains achieved by unions at Boeing and East Coast dock workers. We highlight China's dominance of the global energy markets; and U.S. spending on military and police.
Finally, we close with an economic analysis of Israel's ongoing violence in Gaza.

Minute 20 and later - maybe the 2023 71.7 billion USD NSA budget could be worth mentioning too? And US defense budget 2024 ist said to be approved 842 billion USD now.
And the general public of the world of course watches/monitors when and how the US empire will follow the assumed trend away from defense hardwares to ever better NSA capabilities as shown by future budgets, reductions in hardware (defense) outbalanced by NSA capabilities - these budgets are on purpose for the US and the world, they are not for themselves.
And I continue to miss the potus to make announcements on such shifts between the two budgets and when this may presumably happen.
(The USA misses out on so many things today everywhere, it's not yet too important.)
(Maybe defense just doesn't want NSA to know to much about details of US defense secrets? And therefore wouldn't be too much in favor of future increses in NSA budgets. We all know using NSA more is way more efficient than bombings or boots on the ground, fact.)
(Use of NSA wrongly may become reversed with less harm to the US and the rest of the world, when compared with solid damage done by force and explosives somewhere else and abroad, a fact not yet discussed very often? But why?)
@JamesBrown-ux9ds why you telling me this?
Enchanted! ❤
Thank you
Who authorized the $billions in military aid to Israel? Under what authority does POTUS order US troops and aircraft carriers, etc. to join a war without a declaration of war?
Terrorisme was created to allow the US to go to war without congress having to declare one. The FED ,the US army and all the 3 letter institutions like the CIA, FBI ,IRS are controlled by the same group of people. They want more for themselves and nothing for you and I. They declare war, print money and the citizens have to pay through taxation and inflation. Money has lost its value through that process. They have all the gold and the important businesses. The control the currency flow through printing and taxation. They are the Beast of revelation spoken about in the bible. The US dollar is the mark of the beast . And you know the beast system because they impose sanctions, you won't be able to buy or sell just like what happened to Russia and currency confiscation.
When was the last time the POTUS paid any attention to the law?. The POTUS is a law onto itself.
And if you think it's bad now, just wait till till/if Trump regains power.

Earth is level & stationary.
I need a wage increase but I'm on commission. Not doing well at all. Boy I wish we were union
Wages only applies to, and benefits, people who are employees.
Thus, "living wage" and "minimum wage" are exactly the wrong things to do--they only drive a viscious spiral upward without bound.
What's needed are maximum costs (e.g. price controls; regulations) because they apply to everyone.
@@paulsherman51 The gift of fiat is what causes inflation and in terms of
lawful money the rate of inflation has been 7700% since 1934.
To put that in perspective, previous rates have been 95% from 1860 to 1865
and 113% from 1897 to 1926.
Also the minimum wage was the living wage as in living "minimum living wage"
which began at 25 cents.hr in 1938.
@@jgalt308 true, but don't forget the economic system since 1934 has been caputalism. Again, "minimum living wage" applied only to employees (i.e., "wage slaves") working under private business owning masters.
Prices to independent (non-wage slave) workers and businesses are analagous to wages of employees. To be fair, cannot control one without the other, else the system becomes unbalanced.
Fundamentally, increasing the minimum level of anything leads to positive feedback and an unstable closed-loop dynamic; lowering--or controlling--the maximum level of anything leads to negative feedback and a stable closed-loop system.

Im homeschooling my kids. They will be reading your book understanding capitalism. I'm not preaching econ 101 to them because it's all lies.
Econ 101 is fine to gain an understanding of the current function of an economy, supply and demand, etc. It explains what's going on. The problem is when we define the bounds of our economy by the principles in econ 101.
@@limitisillusion7 And what principles would those be?

In light of the global crisis, rising inflation, and economic instability caused by inadequate governance, stocks, ETFs, Mutual funds, and REITs, assets can serve as a viable path to achieving financial independence
If you've achieved any financial security, savings, owning a house, a pension.... you'll find these are going to be a financial burden around your neck..... they'll tax you to oblivion..
Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. The stock market's volatility, coupled with a reduced income, is making me anxious about having enough for retirement.
More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.
One lesson I've learnt from billionaires is to always put your money to work, and diversifying your investments.
A lot of folks downplay the role of advlsors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.

Can USA (essentially bankrupt) affird to continue funding the 51st state? (Israel)
For a time. But then the funds being drawn away from the mainland US will take their toll. There's is no identifiable inflection point. It's more like a gradual decline in morale.
It's the other way around. US is the state of Israel
Professor, not a”war”; Israel is under legal review for apartheid, atrocities and crimes against humanity that preceded the current review for genocide.
Re: “reservations”, US settler colonial genocides and Indigenous peoples-while “reservations” are a significant reality for some of the Indigenous peoples the US settler society conducted genocide against, the US also conducted genocide against over 400 federally non-recognized tribal nations whose descendants still resist and remain in non-reservation communities across the U.S. Furthermore, the US is committing genocidal acts against millions of Indigenous families who are tax paying migrant workers and whose settler countries of origin are south of the contested U.S.-Mexico border. Also, a large number of non-recognized Indigenous peoples that the U.S. has conducted genocidal violence against are the numerous tribal groups that fought and still fight against the “U.S.” border wall, a gulag structure that American Zionists architected in the Texas-Mexico region and which significant Indigenous resistance movement against has determined key ‘design’ ties between Israel govt and Michael Chertoff prior to the implementation of the Secure Fence Act of 2006.
Professor, so much respect for you, and please do more detailed research on the US-Indigenous genocides beyond legacy academic scholarship! Your mind will be decolonized by it. Hope this helps you refine your keyword searches.

I don't have a problem with replacing workers with machines. We have always adapted to this phenomenon in the past, and we will in the future. For example, you don't see people complaining about backhoes taking the jobs of men with shovels anymore.
What we need to focus on is how to distribute the value created by the machines to the people who's jobs were replaced. If one backhoe operator replaces 10 workers with a shovel, we have to essentially divide the operation of the backhoe among the 10 workers. It's not quite that simple though, because the backhoe requires engineers, salesmen, mechanics, and an oil industry to operate. Even if the number of total laborers diminishes, the remaining labor must be divided amongst the available laborers. That means less hours should be spent working for a proportionally higher wage.
Interesting info and perspectives. It makes sense. Thank you.

There has been no single material evidence of war crimes committed by the Resistance during Al Aqsa Flood on October 7th 2023 so far (though crimes might have been committed). The zionist entity's media and individual military personals have acknowledged of the use of the "Hannibal Doctrine", i.e., the killing of their own citizen to avoid them being captured by the Resistance. In addition, much of the "civilians" in the entity (age 18-51) are reservists for the IDF, and therefore would be considered legitimate target according to the US and the West's definition of "enemy combatants".

There is no politician or agency that can change the laws of economics.
Gresham's law is a monetary principle stating that "bad money drives out good". For example, if there are two forms of commodity money in circulation, which are accepted by law as having similar face value, the more valuable commodity will gradually disappear from circulation.
The "Triffin dilemma" refers to the economic conflict that arises when a country's currency serves as the primary global reserve currency, forcing it to balance its domestic economic interests with the need to provide enough liquidity to the international market, potentially leading to trade deficits and undermining confidence in the currency's value if it runs excessive deficits to meet global demand.
The bullwhip effect is a supply chain phenomenon that occurs when small demand changes at the retail level become larger fluctuations in demand as they move up the supply chain. The effect is named after the physics of cracking a whip, where a small wrist snap creates a chain reaction of increasing wave patterns.
The Cantillon effect occurs when a central bank increases the money supply and the new money doesn't get distributed evenly across the economy. Instead, it's initially received by certain organizations, such as banks and private equity firms, which gives them more purchasing power than the general public. These organizations can then make investments and get loans, causing prices to rise before the rest of the population receives the new money.
Behavioral sciences are in fact dependent on behaviors. All people change the laws of economics.

As of October 21, 2024, Russia's annual inflation rate was 8.4%. The Bank of Russia expects inflation to remain between 8.0-8.5% by the end of the year.
Here are some other inflation-related details for Russia:
Inflation expectations
Inflation expectations are high, with households and businesses reaching their highest levels since the beginning of the year.
Interest rates
The central bank raised Russia's benchmark interest rate to 21%, which is its highest in decades.
Price growth
Price growth is elevated for services (11.6%) and food goods (9.1%), but slightly softer for non-food goods (5.6%).
Core inflation rate
The core inflation rate is 8.3%.
Economy
Russia's economy is still growing, but at a slower pace than in the first half of 2024. This is due to increasing supply-side constraints, such as a decrease in labor resources and spare production capacity.
Russia's economy is highly dependent on the price of oil. In January 2024, the price of Urals crude oil was around $62.4 per barrel.

When you don't know what inflation is or its source, while championing the Chinese miracle
and BRICS as somehow being a serious challenge in a world of "fiat" to promote an economic fantasy
which runs in direct contradiction to human nature and the history of civilization...and believing
that "democracy" is a solution...one need only contemplate the following: "You can print money...
but you can't print commodities."
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The Boeing strike has been settled and the motivation was simple...the ultimate effect of inflation
means that the end result of "unions" and "strikes" is that "production" can no longer compete
and companies either go out of business or leave.
The dock workers' strike and its postponement was a political intervention...and the pain will be
felt by the "non-ruling" class, and like the "railroad strike" it will not be allowed to happen...for the same
reason.
As we harken back to the "professor's claim" that we have never had a crash and a pandemic at the same time,
actual history tell us that we had a war, a real pandemic, a crash and a railroad strike at the same time.
The "crash" in terms of unemployment effects was far worse than that of 1929, and other than
ending the strike...the government did NOTHING and the "Roaring Twenties" began.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
China and energy production with "Chinese characteristics"...renewable energy sources are not renewable energy sources,
as they involve fossil fuels to produce, and they all have to be replaced...and to date there are no known
"miracles" that reverse the effects of entropy, which is a fundamental law of the universe and objective reality.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
On military and police activity in the U.S...since the end of WWII, the U.S. had borne the brunt of "military" expenditures
for "the west" and well as "rebuilding their economies". Once again, cheap labor is also a critical component...so
the ranking of China, India, and Russia as two three and four, is telling. ( in "fiat" world ) Since the complete
destruction of the "constitutional republic" in 1939, and the socialist nonsense that inevitably destroyed
capitalism...the Professor's "factoids" ( look it up ) and without context and irrelevant. P.S. as we are defunding the police
and allowing even more criminals to enter one wonders what it might take for this reality to strike home
for someone who resides in one of those cities but still has managed to avoid its effects.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Finally...Gaza: The extermination of Israel and its intent has been the primary focus of the "arab" world and
Palestinians, in particular, since 1936. One must also note the destruction of the meaning of the term genocide
and its variations while also noting that the "international definition" has devolved to that of simple "intent."
While the various "factions" of this "intent" have shifted due to the failures that have resulted...the intent
still remains and is now centered in Iran, whose genocidal intent is not limited to Israel...and one might refer to
this being "with Jihadist characteristics." This moral posturing, while ignoring context, lack both consistency
and relevance. After all, the "ethnic cleansing" of the Donbas by Ukraine, would also qualify as "genocide"
as least for those who were objectively informed.
