Hey Stef. That lalala song was stuck in my head for the entire labour and birth of my daughter today. Haha! Too catchy. Epic vids, epic trips, happy landings pal!
Loved the description of fear, as a glider pilot, you’re constantly anxious to find the next thermal, and whenever I get out of gliding distance from two airports I get extremely nervous, but learned a) as long as you have a plan B for an outlanding, everything is going to be fine and b) Angst doesn’t help. At least in most of the cases. P.S. love the “airtrip”👍🏼
Thank you, that’s a really nice compliment. Happy to share them for free here on RUclips, share the Aviation love. But Netflix better buy my Wrigley Murphy story...
4:28 - Really great overview of fear - my acronym is "False evidence appearing real", but all other acronyms work equally well. It's useful to inform the 12% of our mind, using logic/reason, that "fear doesn't exist." That may temper the rest of the 88% of our mind (the subconscious) that is butting in. What's interesting is that 88% of the mind, as it relates to fear, is a defense mechanism that is protecting your body and your emotions. This is the world of known negative associations from the past, and potentially not about the truth. Stefan: All of your planning, plan B's, talking thru things, monitoring systems, talking to milkshake, flight and training/recurrency experience, are countering the inner-talk. When you can recognize that the 88% is just there to help out, you can let it go, and continue flying. The 88% will then relax and chill out, because of your confident decision to be "Pilot in Command". One piece of trivia. When we're born we have two in-built fears - fear of falling and fear of loud noises. As that relates to aviation - great! For me, while flying around New York and Los Angeles Airspace, the magic answer was verbalizing the checklist steps out loud. The running flow of "structured anticipatory action; with my control inputs; with expected measurable response" is what calms the subconscious mind - it's all about control. I really enjoy your videos, and have fun looking up GoogleMaps to see where you are!
Welcome to Darwin. Interesting to see Wrigley & Murphy's landing place in a suburban street. This is the wet season so be careful out there. Thanks Stef
Thanks Mike, yeah I’m really happy with the 360 on the wing, I think it gives a nice new way of looking at how the aircraft moves near the runway. Cheers.
Feeling scared is something that happens to us all. It’s how we handle it, and how we grow from it, that’s what defines us as humans. Thanks for sharing that comment mate.
Stefan Drury I’ve only “screamed” on a plane once but to be fair I was only 7 and we were flying near a hurricane I didn’t even scream when I was baby on a plane
G'day from Thailand. Enjoy your videos...spent many hundreds of hours 30+yrs ago flying outback Oz...no GPS, no, or very few navaids (NDB'S), no autopilot, WAC chart and E6B prayer wheel for navigation. Comms on HF....but at least we had comms.....now you're "lost" without some ATC center talking to you. Keep them coming...love seeing the outback from 8000ft again.
Thanks Stef - really enjoyed this series so far and congrats on your journey, probably fair to say a bit easier in an SR than in a B.E.2 but nonetheless a great achievement so well done to you and Milkshake!
I loved the comment died at 25 and buried at 75 (or whatever) I heard one the other day something along the lines of, what happened yesterday is history and called the past, what happens tomorrow is yet to come and is the future but make the most of what happens today as it is special gift to us and that is why it is called the present. I have been following Mike's Instagram and listening to his Southern Sun book and great to hear you talking about meeting up. Did you read the additional comment I added about watching again with my dad on his new smart Tv and the brilliant detail coming through, especially on that back camera? Looking forward to the next one Stef.
Yeah sorry Tim, but behind on responding to comments but yes I saw that. Cheers. And I love that quote about enjoying the present too, that’s a great one. All the best mate.
Hey Stef. I have loved planes and flying on them since I was a little boy. The sound, sight and smell of jet fuel would give me butterflies from excitement and still does to this day except, from about twenty something I developed this irrational anxiety when flying and have not been on a plane for over 15 years. Thanks to guys like you I don't miss out completely on keeping up with aviation in general. When you said "don't die at 25 and be buried at 75", damn, what a wake up that gave me...I have allowed this fear to waste years. Time to do something about it. Your awesome.
Hey mate, this comment is why I make videos like this. That’s so great to hear. Just remember, and keep telling yourself, you’re not alone feeling like that. We all have days when we scare the crap out of ourselves. Use those days as learning experiences but don’t ever let the fear hold you back. I hope you get to fly again, and wish you all the very best mate. Cheers, stef
@@StefanDrury Thanks mate so much. Your definitely an inspiration and role model for all the aspiring young girls and boys thinking about aviation as a profession/way of life. You are a confident and competent gentle-man and I wish you and your family a happy and safe xmas and new year. Thank you Stef.
Love the aviation history stuff Steff...what pioneers and how brave were they to do this!! Well done mate and glad Milkshake was strapped in for the landing in Darwin !! Looking forward to your next enthralling episode as always!!
Your downwind take-off on 11 to capture your shadow in the climb out and the left turn giving us a view of Tennant Creek township showcased your cinematic thinking as most pilots would have taken an intersection departure off 07 with a quick left turn to join track, missing the visual opportunity for the great view. Well done!
Haha thanks David, I would say that I chose that runway as it was the most into wind runway and the safest, most efficient, option for the flight. But also yeah how awesome was that shadow! Sometimes you get lucky.
Thanks for talking about your fears as a pilot Stefan. I'm planning on learning to fly one day and I've had a few lessons already. I love flying but I always have this fear which is hard to explain to people. Love your videos mate. Love from the England.
You are not alone. Repeat that to yourself 10 times. And if you ever meet a pilot who says they’ve never been scared in a plane, do NOT get into a plane with that pilot! All the best mate, thanks for watching.
Hard to believe I was standing at the waterfront in early May this year. Love Darwin. Did not get to the memorial site. And it only took 4 hours on the 737-800 in business. Great video. Cheers.
Cheers from Canada, Stef! Bumped into your channel when looking up Uluru, yesterday. One day later and I must have watched 2 dozen of your vlogs. Great job all around! Sub'd, and I'm not even a pilot, nor planning to be.

Being that you are all upside down there, how do you stick to the ground when you land? Do you use magnets?
Airplane wings in Australia generate downforce not lift.
That makes perfect sense! I would hate to see EYZ try to fly here in America!
How much water do you carry with you when flying in such remote locations?
Was there a lot of traffic at Darwin when you landed? Interesting to see if you got into any jetwash from the jets landing in front of you and how you combat that :)

It was relatively busy compared to the other airports on the way up here, but not as many movements as say Moorabbin on a busy morning. But some jets on the cross runway so no jet wash / wake turbulence issues.
Is that an open glove compartment on the right of the dashboard above the air conditioner control or an empty space for more gear?
It's an empty space, I usually put the CAPS lock pin in there, and sometimes sunglasses / iPhone etc.
