I was taught to heat the wire to annealing temperature and drop it onto the bottom plate and immediately apply the top steel and roll the wire between them.
Hey! by the way if you want the rolling out the wire technique to work, you should use a piece of steel that is at least as long as the the whole wire, and you should stand up so you can put your weight into it. It actually works really well for fully annealed small pieces of wire :)

Boy, howdy! Claw placement on ovals is the worst! It's so easy to see on a round, princess or emerald shapes do themselves, pears seem easy to me also. But ovals? Arggggghhh! Hard as I try, they just wind up kattywompus looking to some degree. Any of your insights are so welcome!

Yes I can imagine the technique may be more effective if the metal is very soft
