  • Habitica is a free habit-building and productivity app that helps you treat parts of your life like a game aka to gamify your life. Habitica can help you achieve whatever kind of goals you’d like to do. Maybe you want to improve your work life, improve healthy habits, or anything else you want. In this video, I show you how to use Habitica and even some pro tips to get started with this really cool to-do app. Ryan from the DasGeek channel and my co-host from Destination Linux and Hardware Addicts podcasts joins me in this video to talk about how he uses Habitica . . . which is great since he was the one who convinced me to use it.

    I’ve been using Habitica for a year (every day). It really does mimic that desire to do something boring (or fun) for fake rewards in a video game. When i’m about to close out the day, i look at my daily tasks and see that i have not cleaned the cat box. If i refuse, i lose HP. So i sigh, clean it, and get my fake rewards (and feel rewarded for some reason (maybe dopamine idk)).

      This is my typical reaction as well, I reluctantly do things on the list.

    "Reality Is Broken" by Jane McGonigal is a great book all about how gamification can improve productivity/outcomes.

    Many years ago there was an app (still is), called "lvl up life". Basically same, but with less visuals maybe.

      The desktop version is a webapp at Habitica.com / the mobile apps are on the official stores for Android and iPhone

    I think I had some bug or problem with it, I forget exactly, I think it was gold or something going negative and having to create a task to fix it? Also it was kinda separate from my existing task list in other software, maybe if it offered some integration with other things it might be more useful?

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  2 года назад +1

      A separate task list would make it less effective. However there are some add-ons to add features including integration with other tools. I remember seeing integration with Todoist for example

      I don’t think it comes with a dark theme, I used the extension Dark Reader to customize to being dark

    This is pretty cool, but it sounds like another tool that you probably spend more time with than on actual working

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  2 года назад +7

      Its sound like that yea but it's not really that since the RPG stuff is done automatically for you so you just use it for tasks and the rest you can gradually use. The only key important thing to know is the daily system and how that works which I address in the video. The rest is fairly minimal interaction.
      I first found this project years ago and never used it because it seemed like a lot to do. When I finally tried it out I realized it's not as bad as I expected in terms of complexity, sure it's complex but it doesn't require a lot of interaction

    I wonder what would stop someone from just cheating? I mean how can the game know if you ran your mile, bathed your dog...???

    • @logicalfundy
      @logicalfundy 2 года назад +5

      If you aren't willing to be honest with yourself, then an app like this can't fix that. In fact, no app really can, and at that point you'll probably benefit more from professional help than a phone app. But if you can be honest with yourself, an app like this can be useful.

      @@logicalfundy With a name like "Logicalfundy" I don't know what to think in your case. I am worried about the "Fundy" part Are you a philosophy fundamentalist as in studied in and observant of the laws of logic, and with sound epistemology, as in you apply the logic properly so without unsubstantiated presuppositions, since valid logical conclusions can be had with false premises, rendering the conclusion false anyhow? Or are you are a religious fundamentalist, who cannot do that because you have zero viable evidence for the existence of your unfalsifiable god, and therefore you can only use unsound premises, flawed logic and every logical fallacy in the book... in order to assert your god, doctrine and faith true, but never actually demonstrate it to be true? IOW: deceiving, even lying to yourself and others.
      You see I am a philosophy fundamentalist, skeptic, critical and rational thinker, and therefore an Atheist; The only honest position one can hold. An Anti-Theist for all the harm theism does by spreading unsubstantiated beliefs, promoting bad epistemology, even discouraging critical and rational thinking, distrusting ones own doubts, and even corrupting young and vulnerable minds with it and with that actually stiffing healthy mind development. And finally an Apistevist, in that I apply the same epistemology to everything to a degree, so any pseudoscience, dogmatic rhetoric, the supernatural and then some; The more extraordinary the claim, the more extraordinary evidence I will require ti form belief.
      That being said, none of the above precludes me from being facetious or humorous, which my comment is, and that should be easily detected, so your logic may just be that, but without the other components to apply it right, not necessarily sound reasoning, and conducive to make false conclusions.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  2 года назад +5

      This app works on the honor system, of course someone could cheat and not be honest with themselves but doing that would defeat the point of using the app. If someone isn't willing to use the app properly then they shouldn't use the app since it won't be helpful for them

    • @Bob-of-Zoid

      @@michael_tunnell I may have to get the app to put: "Use the app!" on my endless to do list, and with it add one more thing to the list I may have to put off indefinitely because I can't find the time to use it! (
