  • The Dusi Canoe Marathon is a marathon canoe race[1] held over three days between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, South Africa. It is run along the Msunduzi and Mgeni Rivers over a total distance of 120 kilometres (75 mi). The race attracts between 1600 and 2000 paddlers each year, making it the biggest canoeing event on the African continent.[2] It is organised by the Natal Canoe Club. The clubhouse is located on the banks of the Msunduzi River, at the exact start point of the race.
    The Dusi Canoe Marathon is held over a period of three days, with each day having a defined beginning and end. The average finishing time for top teams is under nine hours.
    The race begins at the Natal Canoe Club at Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg. The first stage is 42 kilometres (26 mi) and includes 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) of portaging. The 46 kilometres (29 mi) second stage to Inanda Dam iincludes the confluence of the Mgeni and Msundusi Rivers and a 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) flatwater paddle across the dam. The third stage to Blue Lagoon in Durban is the shortest, 36 kilometres (22 mi), however it still contains a 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) flatwater paddle across the lagoon. The finish of the race is at the Kingfisher Canoe Club.[2]
    Competitors may enter the K1, K2, White Water, Touring or Touring Canadian (open canoes paddled by one or two paddlers using single blade paddles) Classes. Touring class kayaks may have rudders and this class includes all K3s, K4 s and plastic kayaks. SUPs form part of the Touring Class.

    Awesome! Looks very tough with those extreme conditions. Entertaining for the spectators too. Some other races to consider: Texas Water Safari (~240 miles and has various classes like DUSI), The AuSable River Canoe Marathon (120 miles, flatwater C2s only and starts at night), The General Clinton Canoe Regatta (70 miles), and La Classique Internationale De Canots (200km, 3 stage race). Each offer their own unique challenges

    well canoeing and kayaking are different things. Canoeing is when you are on your knees, sitting on a saddle or seat using a single bladed paddle. Kayaking is when you are in the sitting position using a double bladed paddle.

    1600 to 2000 paddlers each year with a distance of 120km/75mi. Sounds like a challenging race. I've done some good long ones in Canada myself. YukonRiverQuest 715km in 2.5 days

    Looks like a fun race. Toughest? Look up MR340 - World’s longest nonstop canoe/kayak race. Legendary for the hallucinations racers experience on day 2 and beyond.

      There's class 4 rapids in sections of the Dusi, and there are hundreds of rapids that could break your boat to pieces

    Try the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon....the Canoeists Everest...125 miles non-stop...77 portages and the last 17 miles on the tidal Thames...Now that IS tough....Not much flow to help you either!

    Very cool race concept.... but this seems like a race for runners and white water paddlers not real marathon kayakers. I don't think these guys would keep up with good ICF paddlers in a long race with no portages!

      Hey Shawn, winners include Hank McGregor, Andy Birkett, Ant Stott, Martin Dreyer and of course The King Graeme Pope-Ellis. Adrian Boros was 2nd in 2018. Pretty elite marathoners if you ask me.....

      @burt2525 3 года назад +1

      Added to this race the Berg River Marathon is 240 kms over 4 days of long flat water. ICF marathoners have tried and failed against Hank and Andy on that race.....
