Just watched this video again and learned so much more. Its now 2022 and I'm still enjoying the second or third time of watching. Your channel is such a great resource, thank you
When I visited the amazon link for these pencils I read some of the reviews and noticed that someone had a good solution to deal with the issue of the color indicator not being true to life... she colored a narrow strip of paper with the pencil making the values go from light to dark. Then she cut, wound, and taped the strip around the end around the pencil itself. Thought that was clever! I'll do that with my inktense too. Thanks for the video. It still holds up these years later. Joy to you!
@ Vighnesh - Intense pencils are not watercolor but ink. They are activated with water but once they dry are permanent so the results are not the same.
I just bought these and I was really hoping they were just as good for a regular sketching medium without the use of the water. Your review helped a lot! Can't wait to use them ☺️
Thank you Steve, That was a great introduction to these pencils. I have just retired and am a beginning art student. I appreciate your advice. Best wishes for a great New Year!
I am really enjoying your videos. You have already answered lots of questions I have had about watercolor techniques.Your videos are short and to the point and very interesting. Thank you. I can't wait to have time to watch more.
I have watched your videos - some of them more than once. Your talent is not limited to creating art, you are also gifted at teaching. Thank you for your time to make the videos and to create an authentic learning environment, not just brief snippets of subject matter. All your videos are wonderful, but the Graphitint (watercolor pencil) portrait was awesome!
I have to tell you the breakthrough I have had from watching this video. I am am comfortable drawing anything with graphite pencils but have been struggling with wc pencil, graphitint and watersoluble graphite, never being please with anything I have created. When I saw how you applied the graphitint and then used the dry brush technique to activate as you applied the colour, the penny dropped. Suddenly a double door opened and I knew what to do. I have been using far too much water and I have been applying the water to activate after all the drawing/color is finished. Your approach makes so much sense. I am so excited. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
It's the beginning of 2023 (already!) and I'm eyeing the Graphitint. Either that or Inktense I think. I've been avoiding watercolor and paint and the like but since I'm doing pretty good with the dry mediums then I might just learn how to work a bit with water...
As always, very helpful. I just bought my Derwent watercolor pencils today. Now I have to break into my piggy bank and get a set of the Graphtint. PS: Thanks for the links to the PDF files.
I really enjoyed your review..just ordered these from Amazon and decided to check out some watercolor sites..I like your style of video and appreciate your tips. Your cowboy portrait is lovely. Thanks again for sharing I'm going to check out your other videos too..Marcia in Modesto
Thanks for the review Steve. I just found your channel and I love it. I'm fairly new to watercolor, and I really like how you approach your art. Very informative, and you make learning fun. I look forward to more great Steve and Reese videos. And I think I'm gonna have to order a set of Graphitints :)
Wonderful video. I bought some Graphitint pencils a couple of years ago and I've never properly used them as I didn't really know how to. Seeing what you've done has inspired me. Thank you.
Yup,yup...you are right about Inktense pencils. A bit different because of the permanent quality. Just so dang cool to play with though, I have to admit. You're also right about the color reference indicators on the bottom of the Graphitint pencils - not a lot of help. I almost don't care though. They are so much fun and so versatile - natural. I've used them in combination with my watercolor paints, dig that. I like the graphite effect...dusty and muted....love it. Ok Steve! What is next? Look forward to your next video! Marjolein
Again, you have answered many of the questions that were coming to the surface in my mind about those pencils. I have used my pencils also and really liked them. Because you are more experienced than I, you gave me information that I needed. I must tell you again how very talented ;you are and what a great help you are to so many of us. Thankyou and have a wonderful day.
Thank you for your videos! I always wanted to work with watercolor, but I've not had any formal training. I just play around with whatever I can get my hands on. ;) I enjoy watching your videos and I am picking up a ton of great ideas. I usually do drawings in graphite and have been wanting the Derwent Graphitint pencils for a long time! Now, I'm sure I want them! I have the Derwent Inktense and Metallic pencils, which I love using. I realize the ink pencils must work somewhat differently than watercolor pencils, but it's so fun.. Talk about vibrant color! Love how the portrait came out! :D
Jeanne Groves Thanks a bunch Jeanne. Yes, the inktense pencils become permanent when dry so are a bit different. I would like to try them out sometime myself. If you love graphite drawing you will love the Graphitints.
Thanks. Loving your channel. Just found it a few weeks ago and subscribed. I am thinking how the Graphitint pencils would be for doing a vintage look for florals like "vintage" hydrangeas, etc. Might be fun to try them on tinted papers also.
Thank you. Just found this Graphitint in local art supply yesterday. Can't decide buying or not. The Derwent official video just forced me away. Glad to watch your demo and I am very certain now that I should give it a try myself. Thanks!!
I like the texture you achieved with these in this painting. The emotion of the medium says colored black and white photo. Would be fun to work them like that. Put that on my wish list, Winston!
Thank you for creating this video. In my youth, I was a budding artist. I can still draw, so I thought watercolor pencils would great to re-introduce myself to painting!
can't wait to get some watercolor pencils for my bday! trying to ease my way into using brushes by using watercolor pencils. easier to control what im doing for now until I learn.
Just ordered some!....Was going to get three or four to add to my drawing set but after watching your really useful video I made the investment and got the 24 set. I rather like that dusty subtle look. Thank you again!!
Watercolouring over a pencil drawing, if done well, makes for a nice effect; depending on the subject matter I prefer it to ink and watercolour. If it's a portrait or a figurative drawing I'll use pencil, and if it's a more cartoonish style drawing I use ink.
Steve-Happy 2015! Perfect timing! I purchased a set of 12 several months back and truly enjoy using them. I particularly like them for desert landscapes - they have a sort of "dusty", muted character to them. Thanks for a great video. Looking forward to the next one. Would love to see what your thoughts are on Derwent's Inktense pencils. Also a bunch of fun! Marjolein
Marjolein Vanderhoeven Happy 2015 too you also. Glad you enjoy the graphitints. I absolutely LOVE them! I've had a few requests to review the Inktense pencils, so its something I will definitely put on my list to do. Up to now, I've shied away from combining permanent ink with watercolor as a more advance technique for my audience, BUT, I have to admit the possibilities are intriguing. Its still a water-based media and some sort of multimedia approach would be fun to try.
Steve Mitchell Design Thank you! I am a newbie but would like to start out with the best tools I can afford. I'm headed over to Dick Blick to check out the brush!
Awesome portrait. I've been working with watercolor pencils lately too. One question, do you let layers dry between applications of pencil? Does it make a difference?
I have two that I use listed in my Amazon Store. Both are good. The Xacto I use for fatter pencils. For standard pencils I prefer the School Smart. Really the Xacto is all you need. I bought both so I could review them. www.amazon.com/shop/mindofwatercolor
One of the two listed in my Amazon Store, depending on pencil thickness. www.amazon.com/shop/mindofwatercolor/list/ZYNDVS5IZ79J?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d
Thank you for your inspiration i have wanted to do a watercolour picture but can't get on with water colour per say but love sketching so i think i am going to incorporate the coloured pencils with my sketching. But how do you get your pencils so sharp? mine break all the time, what am i doing wrong?
Thanks for very helpful video - as previous person indicated - it is pretty timeless! Have you since used the watercolour palette Graphitints - if so how do they compare? Love your work, doing portraits myself I really appreciate a good portrait artist!
been looking at these for a while i will go and buy some now thanks steve mind you there not cheap here in the uk your looking about £29.99 a set that works out at 46.72 US Dollar's you would think with them being made in the uk they would be cheaper here but i have found the to be a lot more expensive i use a lot of water color pencils and water soluble pastels i use them in with my water color paints
Gorgeous! I've been wondering how these look. Love it. I also love the brush your are using. Is that a cat's tongue? Tell me pretty please LOL. It looks so sharp but then you can use it as a round. Thanks much. I'm so glad I ran into you!
I see you do much more watercolor than watercolor pencils demonstrations. Have you ever made Caran D'ache and Faber Castell watercolor pencils demonstrations? I would like to know your opinion on these brands. Thank you!
I liked a lot your review about these pencils. I´m totally new to this world of coloring but wants soooo much to give these pencils a try. One question: which is this kind of black brush you use, please? Thanks a lot and greetings from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! :)
Bera Moss If they are normal diameter I use an electric. I get that question a lot so I made this video. This is what I'm using now. ruclips.net/video/IZXWNYt0HDw/видео.html If they are of a larger diameter I use a hand sharpener.
Wonderful tutorial and review, I subscribed :). I was going to ask about some of the supplies you used, but after reading through the comments, I found that you have answered most of them already, but I was wondering if you had a method to seal a drawing and help preserve the colors (light fast)? do you think a coat of workable fixative could do so, or would it harm the color? Also, I see something in your drawing that no one else has commented, so maybe it's just me but, in your background shading, where you have the kind of burgundy and the burnt umber blend, it almost looks like the outline of a laughing child! So I see the piece in my head now almost like a grandfather recalling a grandchild. (Paused at 9:13 is a good shot if anyone else is trying to see it)
+Shell Sto If my art materials are lightfast I don't worry about sealing. I never seal watercolor especially, but these pencils do have some lightfast issues. If I were going to frame them I might seal them with Krylon UV archival spray. More likely I would just use UV glass. Spray can definitely change color. Usually darkens it. So you always want to spray a test piece first.
Loved it, thank you! Btw, i bought a book on amazon, "Draw Faces in 15 minutes" by Jake Spicer, and i just made my first two (in my mind) successfull portraits ever this weekend, and would like to make one with color. Wanted to ask you, i have watercolor pencils, but never really understood how "mixing" colors with them would work, as in all the different tonal values on the face. In this video, did you just overlap the red and brown before you activated them, or one at a time?
I thought about doing a video on that actually. You can use graphite paper under your drawing and trace back over the lines to transfer it. You can also scribble pencil on the back of your drawing and it works just like graphite paper. If you're using 140lb paper or lighter (thin enough to see through it) you can trace on a light box with your drawing beneath the WC paper. A glass patio door makes a decent light box in a pinch.
I have since writing my first 2 comments read what Derwent actually said about their own pencils...." As everyone will mix different amounts of water when using these pencils, it would be impossible to give an exact lightfast rating. The more water applied to each colour, the less lightfast it becomes - be careful around colours such as pinks and purples that have low lightfast numbers as these will fade far quicker than stronger colours." So there you have it. My watercolor journal entries I did use water...it is a water color journal after all lol! I will be ditching these pencils...as I cannot determine which pencils/colors I will be adding more water to as I become lost within my painting lol. Happy New Year everyone....keep painting!!!
Graphitint pencils are unique in the market. So are Inktense pencils. Derwent has a penchant for being quite inventive with art products, and new things tend to come with high learning curves. For example, I find it hilarious how some people complain about Tombow Irojiten pencils, because they're so accustomed to working with soft-core colored pencils. Irojiten are genius pencils, if you have the patience to learn different ways of working with different materials. Why don't you try to use both Graphitint and Inktense in the same piece? I've seen it done before. Especially if you're concerned with permanence and lightfastness. Inktense pencils are amazing for that.
Hi Steve. I was wondering if you should put an annotation over the video letting people know that these are not lightfast at all. Some colors disappear completely within 2 months. It is great for journaling though as it won't be exposed to the sun. I love the use of these pencils and have always wanted them but the lack of lightfastness have always made me hesitant to buy especially since money is tight. Handprint.com? Has some great swatches and lightfast tests where the colors almost completely disappear leaving only the graphite sometimes within one month!!
+My Panda Paints Only 5 of the 24 colors are not considered lightfast. Still better odds than the notorious Copic marker. I can't believe the quantity of "finished" framable art being created by artists with Copics. No pigment whatsoever. But you are correct, Graphitints are probably a better sketching and journaling tool which I think I mentioned in the video.
+The Mind of Watercolor Yea but the problem that people seem to have run into is the difference of what SHOULD be lightfast vs the actual lightfastness of the colors. I think Derwent says 5 are not lightfast but in real world lightfastness tests, less than a handful came back as not shifting in color or completely disappearing? That's why I left the comment. Especially since about half of the line apparently loses all color (no ability to distinguish what color was used) within a month in direct sunlight. But yea. RUclips is notorious for bringing about self-taught artists who don't realize that dye-based materials are for reproductions of graphic arts. Not meant to be used as a final product in itself. Once I get myself on my two feet, I'm probably going to be starting a RUclips channel starting with the Myths from Internet, such as "It's ok to sell art made with student grade/academic materials! No one can dictate to you what you need to use to make (sellable) art!"
+My Panda Paints I think that this is tremendously disrespectful to the person who is paying for the artwork and generally the person is a fan of their work.
Love your videos. I subscribed. Did you start this portrait with just a regular graphite pencil drawing or did you use the derwent graphitint pencils on that initial drawing? p.s. your portrait turned out great and it looks so much like my dad as he got older.
Just watched this video again and learned so much more. Its now 2022 and I'm still enjoying the second or third time of watching. Your channel is such a great resource, thank you

Seven years down the line and this has been really helpful helping me decide whether to order and how to use. Thanks for pdf’s too!
My father is now 93 and I wish I good enough to capture a picture of him like this one. I really like the way this looks!
@ Vighnesh - Intense pencils are not watercolor but ink. They are activated with water but once they dry are permanent so the results are not the same.
I love this demonstration. Great picture! Gives a realistic idea of what the pencils are like. Thank you.

Great video! I would love to see a demo on how you approach reflections in glass as in this gentleman's glasses. I find your drawing amazing!!!

KnickKnack PaddyWhack Silver Brush - Black Velvet. Probably my favorite brush. A squirrel and synthetic blend.

Awesome portrait. I've been working with watercolor pencils lately too. One question, do you let layers dry between applications of pencil? Does it make a difference?
question: What is the best sharpener for colored pencils that give the very sharp point?

Same with Stabilo Pastels, people argue is they are watercolour. It says right on the box they are partial aquarellable.
Very glad to have found you!

Andy Coakes Thanks Andy. I got the 24 pencil set on Amazon for around $38.
the price difference is unreal
Amazing artwork
Water-activated crayons have natural colors. They do not surprise with the intensity of the pigment, but reveal the true talent of the creator.
Gorgeous! I've been wondering how these look. Love it. I also love the brush your are using. Is that a cat's tongue? Tell me pretty please LOL. It looks so sharp but then you can use it as a round. Thanks much. I'm so glad I ran into you!
Thanks Teri. The brush is a Silver Brush - Black Velvet #4 round. One of my favorite brush lines.
Thanks. I'm really enjoying your videos Steve. Learning a lot. I really like how your graphiting portrait came out. Beautiful.
I see you do much more watercolor than watercolor pencils demonstrations. Have you ever made Caran D'ache and Faber Castell watercolor pencils demonstrations? I would like to know your opinion on these brands.

I have some of both brands. Both are high quality. I tend to use watercolor pencils for touch up and to augment regular watercolor.

Yes, overlap and layering is probably the most common way of mixing watercolor pencils.
what brand of brush are you using in this demonstration? Than you so much for your helpful video!
Silver Brush Black Velvet #4 round - amzn.to/2fgQDuQ
Excellent demo!
Sandra Farrell Thank you!
I enjoyed this video
I have a small 12 price set
But the nice thing is they are open stock
Thanks again :)
Blissfulthings Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Do you find it easier to use watercolor pencils with the brush compared to a water brush that alway wet and why so?
Yes, a bit. More water control.
Can you give some tips on how to transfer a sketch/drawing onto watercolor paper..... ? That seems to be my challenge at the moment....
The more water applied to each colour, the less lightfast it becomes - be careful around colours such as pinks and purples that have low lightfast numbers as these will fade far quicker than stronger colours."
So there you have it. My watercolor journal entries I did use water...it is a water color journal after all lol! I will be ditching these pencils...as I cannot determine which pencils/colors I will be adding more water to as I become lost within my painting lol. Happy New Year everyone....keep painting!!!
Jon Brin oh 🙁 . Well then I will use the Faber-Castell Aquerelle graphite and mix with real watercolor.
+My Panda Paints So true!
AMAZING!!
Well done...thank you !!
can I do d same with derwent inktense pencils??
Great creative New Year 2 you also!
What is the name and brand of the tiny b brush you are using? I need one like that for miniature painting.
check the description.
Really enjoyed watching 😊👍
I think these would be great for using as a sketching medium under regular watercolor, then you don’t have to erase any pencil lines :-)
Yes, a common employment of WC pencils actually.
As always, you have found a set of pencils that I have owned for years, and not really known how to use!!
crystal eldridge :)
Love your videos. I subscribed. Did you start this portrait with just a regular graphite pencil drawing or did you use the derwent graphitint pencils on that initial drawing? p.s. your portrait turned out great and it looks so much like my dad as he got older.
Bright Future Just an outline with a regular graphite pencil. All the toning was done with the Graphitints.
What brushes do you like using the best?
Silver Brush Black Velvets are my favorite but I use several brands.
happy new year steve all the best
Andy Coakes Thanks so much. And a happy new year to you also.
That is true.
Great demo..
