Knights of the Round is my personal favorite. I live that gritty blade-cutting-through-armored-flesh gameplay. It's not as colorful as King of Dragons, but it's sooo satisfying and visceral.
@@MCastleberry1980 I miss arcades sooooo much! I first played it at a local place called Mulligan. It had a Capcom arcade cabinet with this, King of Dragons, 1942-43, Captain Commando, Forgotten Worlds, etc. So much fun
That's because it was supposed to be a D&D game but the rights fell through last minute, so they just made it a generic fantasy game. Still my favorite beat 'em up!
Yep, I've always viewed King of Dragons that way as well. It definitely was a 'spiritual predecessor' to those incredible two D&D games in many aspects, which I'd argue only further improved the formula.
Something important about Knights of the Round that you didn't mention: there are attack varieties that aren't present in King of Dragons, using directional taps. I personally like the character variety in King of Dragons, but for any individual character, the KotR combat is more complex.
There was a guy who was trying to mod that and trying to make some sort of online co op game... it sounded pretty dope but I assumed it is a lot of work since I havent heard anything in the last years
Man about 10 years ago I scooped up King of Dragons for 3$. I hadn't heard of it and thought it was just some random beat em up. Boy was I wrong! Love that game and so glad other people feel the same
Dude you're forgetting the best swords-and-sorcery beat-em-ups that capcom made: the Mystara DnD games. Granted they only ever came to arcade and the Japanese Saturn, until the recent rereleases, but damn those games are good. Branching paths, shop upgrades, leveling via xp, and a damn dwarf. Good times.
I doubt he forgot, these three games all had the theme of being sword and sorcery style games by capcom that got SNES ports, Shadows over Mystara is without a doubt the best possible game, but it never got a SNES port and thus would be unfair to compare it to these three.
As others have said they were never SNES ports but it does speak to Capcom’s focus on fantasy style games. The Mystara games were great. Got them on my Xbox One and Steam.
I have played and beaten all three, and very much enjoyed them. Of the three I personally enjoy King of Dragons the most. It's the one I go back and play the most of the three.
This was a good rental game(Magic Sword), it was cool to have an AI partner to help you out, similar to Final Fight 3 and even better that this AI partner can be more helpful than a hindrance. King of Dragons was pretty fun that had a very similar style to "Golden Axe". Knights of the Round was more of a traditional arcade style beat em up, like Final Fight or TMNT: Turtles in Time.
"100% computer controlled" in Magic Sword is a severe overstatement. The companions are more like "options" in shmups like Life-Force. They fire their weapons when you do, and trail behind you, following your every movement. One could think of Magic Sword as being a sort of walking Shmup in a sense.
After i watched this for the 1st time a short while back i installed all 3 on my modded snes classic. Gotta say all 3 of em are amazing, but king of dragons is hands down the best. And magic sword is my 2nd favorite.
Sometimes I miss those afternoons playing king of dragons or final fight (2 or 3) with my brothers or cousin, simple times when my only worry was school.
Most of these are pretty expensive now, but one purchase of Capcom Classics Collection 2, and you'll have all of them for a good price, along with Captain Commando. If you get the first one too, you'll get Final Fight, Forgotten Worlds, and a ton of Capcom Generation games ported over from the PS1 on it. But hey, all 3 original GnG titles are also on the first collection. The knock against the SNES ports though, colors tend to either be drab (Cap Commando) or the speed is slower (thanks processor) for all of them.
has Magic Sword, King of Dragons ever been on xbox 360 xbox one or pc I have been trying to remember the name of this game. Came across your video and remembered how much fun i had with it in the arcade again :)
The biggest non-gameplay difference between King of Dragons and Knights of the Rounds is that Knights of the Round is Arthurian legend and King of Dragons is more Tolkien themed.
I have Magic Sword with the Final Fight Double Impact. And I do keep replaying it in an attempt to get the trophy to unlock all the treasures earned in the game.
King of dragons is awesome!! I loved that game. My friend and I would play that game all the time!! We put so many hours into that game just playing and replaying it. It never got old.
It should be worth mentioning that the SNES ports of King of Dragons and Knights of the Round got an essential upgrade in the form of the block button, in the arcade you had to push forward and the attack button just when the attack was about to hit and it failed most of the times.
Hektols yes and having played the arcade emulated versions I think the SNES music is better. But the speed on the arcade version is better and they had extra bits like the halfling thieves that would come steal your gold.
And here we are 7 years later and arcade ports of these games finally got released on Switch. Totally recommend if anyone wants to get these games that’s the place to get them
$67.99 on release day or close to it for The King of Dragons and worth every penny. Us non Genesis people finally had a Golden Axe type game. Spent many fun hours playing and it’s in my personal SNES Hall of Fame. Magic Sword was awesome too. Never had Knights of the Round but I did love Captain Commando, a near futuristic sci fi take on the genre.
These are totally awesome games. Not to mention that they’re capcom’s most underrated games. I enjoy each one of these games. My most favorite of all three of these games is king of dragons 😎🎮
Out of all three my favourite is definitely ‘king of dragons’. Just the soundtrack alone wins it for me let alone all the fun I had in all the different stages.
I'd say it's really up there, though lots of arcade beat em ups of the time were way better. It's too bad we never got home ports of stuff like Simpsons Arcade, X-Men Arcade, Ninja Baseball Bat Man or especially the DnD beat em ups which were very similar in theme to King of Dragons.
It's a fun debate but there is no "BEST BEAT EM UP" of the 16bit era. Some hardcore players enjoy the challenge and subtle complexities of arcade Final Fight 1cc attempts, or other frenetic titles such as AvP. Some laid back gamers prefer slower beat em up/rpg hybrids like King of Dragons that reward the player with leveling up. SNES fanbois often prefer Turtles in Time. Many Sega zealots hail SOR2 as the GOAT, especially when they get bodied by arcade Final Fight and have to credit feed. They rightly argue that SOR2 has depth to it's moveset, but ignore how a shallow moveset can be better for faster/tighter beat em ups where the player has less time and space.
I'd have to say that nothing beats Streets of Rage 2 in all honesty. Can't speak for King of Dragons since I've yet to actually play it but, my favorite Beat 'em up of all times is still the Mystara Chronicles series but that's arcade so, myes. I don't think my opinion would change over which game I prefer the most after I get around to playing King of Dragons, but I do believe it'll be right up there next to it in either case.
Magic sword is actually super fun, but the lack of co-op means it can’t compete with knights of the round and king of dragons But out of the three, I like the atmosphere of Magic Sword the best
i like Knights of the Round better, because the sprites look so much nicer. And the Leveling System feels very rewarding! But my Favorite Beat em Up is easily Pirates of Dark Water
I think all three of these were an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the D&D beat-em-ups Arcade games they made, or a way to practice for them. i dunno the timeline.
I haven't given the others any time but yeah Knights Of The Round is just simple monster smashing fun and like you said playing it together is defo the way to go.
What elements would you use to make a retro beat’em up ? I would throw people off screen like Turtles in time. Block attacks like Super Double Dragon Sound effects from Final Fight That special attack cop from Streets of Rage
Knights of the round is the best beat-em up on the snes, with King of Dragons being a worthy second place. The pace in Knights of the Round is perfect, which is King of Dragons ONLY downfall, with way too much recycled gameplay. The 16 levels just seemed like filler overkill imo

All fun games though I've never had the pleasure of playing Knights of the Round. Funny thing is all the stuff they learned making these would go into making their D&D arcade beat'em ups.
I love King of Dragons, in part because of the music and how well it works in "2-Player Mode." Capcom needs to bring back this game, but they probably won't.
Wished Nintendo and Capcom would play nice and re-release those. Like the arcade version of those have such a poorer OST/Audio. Paying 150-200 for one of those these days is horrid.

magic sword is a really good game it's crazy in the game you climb up the tower all the way in space just like the tower of Babel to take out Satan and his army of demons
I really wish, that Capcom would HD remaster king of dragons, maybe add some more game mechanics (add in rpg elements and the option to revisit levels). I always wished we could revisit locations, mainly for how beautiful the areas are.
King of Dragons is one of my favorites on SNES. Loved leveling up the characters to max and seeing the weapons / armor change cosmetically.
James Callahan HOOOO!
Yesssss
I'm down for any retro games that had cosmetic changes with stat boost instead of the same look and gear throughout the entire game
Cleric FTW. This was one of my favorite arcade games back in the day. I still vividly remember it's location in my arcade :)
