Knight of the Round also had a baby brother ( or was it an older brother ?? ) on SNES games back in the day, King of Dragon, personally I'd say it's an even more mix between RPG and Beat-em up, more medieval than Knight of the Rounds... Knights of the Round was and still is a great beat-em up, only, closer to King Arthur than RPG, I've played many beatem up, it's a good one, or at least it's in my Top 10 list on that genre.... But, I always felt that King of Dragon is Knights of the Round's arch rival even though I liked King of Dragons better, it felt a lot more RPG side and there were more various monsters in King of Dragons, and the final boss in KoD was literally a full sized Red Dragon... But, both are on my top 10 best beatem up list and I've played many beatem up over the years.....
The arcade version of this game is currently available on the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle and Capcom Arcade Stadium, Vol. 2. I play Knights of the Round from time to time. The King of Dragons and Magic Sword also feature a leveling system.
When Capcom Beat-em-up collection came out I got a group of friends to play this together. Every few minutes some one in our group commented how great the game was and how they can't believe they didn't know about it.
Vastly more complex gameplay than Golden Axe with its level-up system/defensive intricacies. King of Dragons was always a more fun/faster paced Golden Axe IMO.
Capcom made some awesome beat 'em ups in the early 90s. This game, Final Fight and Magic Sword were my 3 favorites by them. So many good memories of going to arcades and bowling alleys to dump a bunch of quarters in these games!
Had such fun memories playing this with my older teenage cousins back in the 90s they would be nice and try to carry me and I remember dying constantly.
I never played the SNES port of it, but loved the arcade version of it. The first time I played it, I was at a camp site when I was a kid and there was a building at the center of the camp grounds with running water, electricity, restrooms...some pool tables, and a single arcade cabinet that just so happened to be this awesome gem of a game. All us kids and teens would come over and play it and hang out in the building when we weren't out fishing and such. Great time!
always loved this game. i think you forgot to mention you can alchemize your loot drops by hitting them, making silver coins grow into gold and then into chests if you hit the loot before grabbing it, same with food, you can hit a big food item and it will split into 3 or 4 medium parcels of food, you can even do this when playing solo and reap ridiculous amounts of points and health. the catch is that loot drops are on a pretty short timer, cant remember off top of my head but it was like 20 seconds total per item, so you cant deal with enemies first and focus on loot later, you have to do it with enemies on screen or grab the low level loot, making you measure on the fly the risk reward you want to deal with. seriously, give this game a chance, it's truly amazing
I remember this because it was nearing christmas time and we were in a local popup amusement park with my grandmother. I asked her for some money so I could play this with my brother.
I swear to this day that as a kid I remember getting Arthur to a point where he had big purple orbs in his shoulder armor and looked awesome. I’ve never been able to recreate it to this day though and couldn’t find any pictures of it online anywhere either so I get the feeling of “am I crazy?” Whenever I think of it haha.
This game was up at the little convenience store by the house I grew up in, later replaced by Mortal Kombat. I absolutely loved it. My brother and I would play it almost daily after school. While Mortal Kombat was cool, I always missed this game after it was gone.
Played this so much with my brother. We'd pick up pencils or whatever objects were closest and raise them up at the end of each level in sync with the characters. "Hup!"
This and the Dungeons and Dragons Beat em Ups are some of my Favs. When ever I found any of these in the Arcades I would almost always go through all my Quarters on them, unless there was a Active Fighter people where playing. Man I miss the Arcades.
My brother and I played King of the Dragons like crazy for our entire childhood, later on when the emulation scene came about we discovered this game and it didn't have the childhood love for it going, but we still had lot's of fun.
I first saw this at my college gaming room in 1992 and spent so many quarters on it! Most everyone played the SF and MK machines so I always had this one to myself. I had one strategy - pick Perceval and smash the heck out of everything in sight! I didn't care much for Arthur and Lancelot...I just loved how Perceval had a jump and smash basic attack that could take out many weaker enemies in one shot. Truly a classic and whenever I've seen this game in an arcade over the years I always stop and play it.
I remember emulating this years and years ago. I was just randomly looking at a list of games with no pictures or nothing and I was like "well this is probably a piece of crap but maybe it's an RPG or something." Was very pleasantly surprised it turned up to be one of the best of It's genre.
Unlike any other beat-em-up I've played, you MUST play defensively in this game if you want to get more points/gain levels. For starters, you get extra points if your life bar is full when you get food. You get bonus point multipliers if you attack the same enemy type in a row (soldier, fat man, etc.) for as long as you can. You will ALWAYS get extra points for hitting "large" treasures/food and collecting their smaller items piecemeal. Every time you continue, your next level up requirements will take a massive jump up. TL;DR? LEARN TO BLOCK and take advantage of the invincibility afterwards before hitting enemies with a heavy attack (forward+attack) if you want to gain levels and keep your score high. This game will chew you up and spit you out if you just plow through it like every other game in the genre. The gameplay gets pretty OCD when you get down to it. Last, the SNES version, just like King of Dragons, is better than the arcade simply for having block assignable to a button press.
Knights of the Round is my favorite beatemup, hands down. U.N. Squadron is my favorite side scrolling shootemup. I've returned to both those games hundreds of times over the years.
I loved Knights of the Round. Beat it a couple times in the arcade. Love those types of beat em ups that you can play through from start to finish(with some quarters.. or a lot of quarters..lol). This one though may be my favorite due to the theme and the level ups. Being a big RPG guy on consoles I gravitated to this one more than other beat em ups.
I never encountered this game in the arcade. I did however rent it many times from my local movie store. I was lucky to have a place with a huge selection of games and movies, and I was friends with the woman who owned it. I got to play this many times on my SNES with the lads on the weekends.
Whoa! I forgot about this game until I came across your video. I had loads of fun playing this with friends as a kid. Similar to most arcade games from its era, the challenge was high. I'm sure devs purposely cranked up the difficulty to suck quarters from players. Dungeons & Dragons was another Capcom game similar to this one. It was fun too, and I thought it was actually better. Aside from their beat-em-ups, Capcom definitely have some gems that deserves updating for modern technology. I doubt this will happen for most of the old games though. The only games they've kept up to date is Street Fighter and Resident Evil. It'd be great to see a new Breath of Fire or Demon's Crest.
Knights of the Round and the King of Dragons are two of the very best beat-em-ups on the SNES outside of Turtles in Time. They don't get spoken about much and that's a damn shame. My cousins and I played the crap out of both as kids. This one in particular is easy enough to pick up and play but very difficult to master.
One of my favorite snes 2 player games. I did got max levels a few times playing solo but much more fun with a friend. Very few players use Persival since he is too slow and range is short. Graphics, gameplay are top notch.
Game also had some really nice strategy to playing it. As you get more exp as a bonus if you keep attacking the same and specific type of enemy unit in a row. So if you have 3 dagger enemies and 1 with a spear.. Dont just kill 1 dagger and 1 spear.. As they come along.. No. Kill the 3 dagger dudes, and you get more points. Which means. More exp. Then kill the spear guy. Or spear guy first and then the 3 dagger dudes. Since you never know who will come after. That is basicly the big thing to get to max level in this game.
I knew 1 person when i was a kid who had this game, she always had to be Lancelot, i remember thinking of it as like a slightly slower pace battletoads
Loved this game as a kid. My cousin and I played it all the time. Percival was my jam and Balbars the Hammer was my favorite boss. And yeah, it was kinda cheap. The SNES version lets you BLOCK and get a moment of invincibility so that added a cool bit of depth.
Fun game! My brain sort of lumps this, King of Dragons and Capcom's DnD games together :D Though only your companions level up, I love Magic Sword, too!
I've had this game on two collections. Capcom classics, and the beat em up. Its fun those Capcom beat em ups. The game also has a block mechanic. Its a little weird.
I played the crap out of this when I was young and several years back got an inexpensive cart of it (maybe 50 bucks?) in really good condition. Playing it solo can be pretty rough though.
Have you tried Capcom's Dungeon and Dragon games they also are like that so I'm wondering if you played them before Dungeon and Dragon Tower of doom and it's sequel Shadows over Mystera
Knights of the Round is an amazing game but I have to admit Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara are pretty much the pinnacle of Capcom beatemups, for me at least.
This is completely a matter of personal taste and my bias towards fantasy and RPGs but: the 2 D&D beat em ups or Knights of the Round > Steets of Rage or Golden Axe
How much did you pay to play the game back in 1990? How quickly you were killed? How much money it would take to completely finish the game in the arcades?
As someone who happily sold their SNES copy I actually think it’s pretty poor port. A but more choppy and your character only upgrades like 3 or 4 times I believe. Good if it’s your only option tho I suppose

One of my buddies had this and we played it ENDLESSLY. Awesome game. King of Dragons is the only other medieval SNES beat’em up in it’s league.
Yep, King of the Dragons was great too!
The arcade version of this game is currently available on the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle and Capcom Arcade Stadium, Vol. 2. I play Knights of the Round from time to time. The King of Dragons and Magic Sword also feature a leveling system.
Criminally underrated. This game was a graphic marvel and its gameplay was as solid as Golden Axe.
Agreed, one of the best beat em' ups ever as far as I'm concerned.
When Capcom Beat-em-up collection came out I got a group of friends to play this together. Every few minutes some one in our group commented how great the game was and how they can't believe they didn't know about it.

This one and King of Dragons really stood out for me as far as Beat'em'ups go, thanks for covering it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Knights of the Round and Peacekeepers were my 2 favorite beat em ups from the SNES days. Amazing games.
I need to cover The Peace Keepers at some point!
Capcom made some awesome beat 'em ups in the early 90s. This game, Final Fight and Magic Sword were my 3 favorites by them. So many good memories of going to arcades and bowling alleys to dump a bunch of quarters in these games!
Yeah, they cranked out some of the best ones for sure!
Magic sword was TOP TIER , used too love that craziest games back then
Had such fun memories playing this with my older teenage cousins back in the 90s they would be nice and try to carry me and I remember dying constantly.
Right on! Thanks for sharing your memories from it.

I have this game on the Capcom Beat-em Up Bundle for PS5. Still great to play to this day.
Yes it is!
That bundle is well worth the money
I remember this because it was nearing christmas time and we were in a local popup amusement park with my grandmother. I asked her for some money so I could play this with my brother.
Thanks for sharing your memories of it!
I do wish I'd had an arcade near me as a kid. Only on vacations though, and the game selection was limited. But I like how this one looks.

This was for sure a great Game, me and my brother played this game all the time together, it was one of the few co-op games that we could both enjoy.
Glad you enjoyed it and remember it!

It really was!
Knights of the Round and those D&D brawlers are my favourite Capcom beat 'em ups from that era.
Yeah, all of those are great!
The ability to block/parry attacks is one of the best features in this game, not all games have this.
True, I should have mentioned that
Unlike any other beat-em-up I've played, you MUST play defensively in this game if you want to get more points/gain levels. Used to play this a bunch as a kid. Lancelot was the best, his animations and over the top style were and still are awesome.
The BGM is epic and the game deserves a remake.
Yeah, it would be a pretty good one for them to remake/remaster!
This was the best beat 'em up for me, hands down.
I can see why!
Barret: Red, toss me Knights of the Round!!!
Knights of the Round and the King of Dragons are two of the very best beat-em-ups on the SNES outside of Turtles in Time. They don't get spoken about much and that's a damn shame. I agree, it doesn't get much better on the SNES for beat em' ups than those three.
@@Xygor I'd also throw in Final Fight 3 and Captain Commando to round up the "Top-5."
A cool but underrated arcade game, along with the D&D beat'em ups "Tower of Doom" and "Shadows over Mystara" developed by Capcom!
One of my favorite snes 2 player games. I did got max levels a few times playing solo but much more fun with a friend. Very few players use Persival since he is too slow and range is short. Graphics, gameplay are top notch.

@@Xygor Thanks for the video! Always fun hearing about others experiences and the broader impact of awesome games.
It's one of the games in the Capcom Beat'em Up Bundle!
True!
this is the best beat em' up on arcade for me
5:35 When people say 'Dungeon Magic', I just think of 'Dungeon Magic - Sword of the Elements' for NES.
Been playing this for 3 weeks straight hacking my PB lower and lower. Good choice for video
Fun game! My brain sort of lumps this, King of Dragons and Capcom's DnD games together :D Though only your companions level up, I love Magic Sword, too!
One of the few SNES games I ever rented out more then once.
I didn't play a lot of beat'em up games, but this is one of two I was concerned about having a copy for replaying. The other was King of Dragons.
It is also available for the PS4 on the capcom collection (bet’em up bundle)
I've had this game on two collections. Capcom classics, and the beat em up. Its fun those Capcom beat em ups. The game also has a block mechanic. Its a little weird.
Between this game and King of Dragons were really in-depth for a SNES game.
True, I will cover that one soon!
My uncle had a restaurant with this arcade machine in it, I would always try to beat the game before my food came out. Never happened!
I played the crap out of this when I was young and several years back got an inexpensive cart of it (maybe 50 bucks?) in really good condition. Playing it solo can be pretty rough though.
Great memories from the past!
I've never been a fan of the beat-em-up genre as a whole, but this one looks neat despite that.
It is!
I got into Dragon's Crown for PS3. Plays similar to this.
Definitely my favorite capcom beat me up; the snes port is one of the best the system has to offer. 10 out of 10, i absolutely love this game🥰
i think this game is on the Capcom Belt Action Collection for Switch
Great, thanks for that info!
I am considering getting this title for the SNES. It’s pricey now and days though
what is better the arcade version or the snes version?
I think the Arcade version is better
me and my friends played sooooo much of this game
Have you tried Capcom's Dungeon and Dragon games they also are like that so I'm wondering if you played them before Dungeon and Dragon Tower of doom and it's sequel Shadows over Mystera
I always feel like beat em ups would be better as fighting games.
This game had Golden Axe written all over it. Fun game though.
Your complete story explanations are amazing, please do more Final Fantasy. Please do Final Fantasy X-2 to go along with the FFX one you did.
Knights of the Round is an amazing game but I have to admit Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara are pretty much the pinnacle of Capcom beatemups, for me at least.
The two D&D beatemups have a ton of depth. I think they have one major flaw though in that they're a bit slower paced than I think they should be.
This has to be made from the same team that made golden axe. It's almost the same game. I love that game(s)
Good game, but the 2 dungeons and dragon from Capcom are LEAGUES above i think
Those are good games for sure.
Loved this one but it was more a rent than a buy imo
I got really far in this as a young kid , maybe about 10 or 11
This is completely a matter of personal taste and my bias towards fantasy and RPGs but: the 2 D&D beat em ups or Knights of the Round > Steets of Rage or Golden Axe
