7/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
I happen to think I could very quickly recognize Jonny Davy’s vocals. 🤷♂️
One of the most unique voices in the genre
100%. Super unique and could pick his voice out easily.
His lows are distinct af
Yeah, a friend showed me Fleshwrought and I instantly knew who it was
VERY distinct voice, I think it's super weird that he doesn't seem to think that's the case.
“Vocals aren’t very distinct” Johnny has one of the most instantly recognisable voices in metal nobody sounds remotely like him
He sort of has a Trevor from black dahlia which is a very good thing. Johnnys vocals are his own but there are similarities
I'd say if you knew who jfac was, and heard any song, you would definitely recognize who it is. His range is very recognizable.
So true
My band covered “entombment of a machine”I’m high school at the band showcase like 2008. We practiced that joint all year everyone knew the song and were anticipating the rumors of us performing it. It felt like in those couple minutes the whole school let out 4 years worth of angst all at once and that cafeteria absolutely lit up. Thanks Job for a cowboy. Legendary music.
fantano has absolutely insane takes for basically any alternative/metal scene artist
Fantano mentions beyond creations is so cool literally one of my fav bands because of the bass
Forrest is a wizard on The Aura
It's such a good tech death band! Have you checked out First Fragment too? Classical influenced TDM with Forest on the bass
Beyond Creations is a band I haven’t heard in like 10 years
The bass solo on omnipresent perception hits too hard
beyond creation is fucking legendary
Holy shit, didn't expect him to review this and I sure as fuck didn't expect a 7 given his distaste for tech-death, well deserved tho, this shit gose hard
Yeah but it's the Gorguts type of tech death so he's into it
Well deserved 7/10 as well this album slays
I was really hoping he gave it at least a 7 haha
Their new album is so good! I had to check out the review.
@@profanepropane i dont think its Gorguts type which is more dissonant and atmosphere based, its more like Hath, or Slugdge with main focus on riffs rather than leads like the tech death he dislikes(i know there are still leads on the album)
This album review makes me feel old. Thank you
It's really been 20 years since I downloaded their songs off limewire to put on my Dell DJ Ditty💀
@@FailedIndieArtist same but for me it was burned cds when I first got my license.
lmao the igor vinyl pullout
can you explain the joke? i don't get it...

That first JFAC EP was absolute gold...I gotta hear this
Outside of the core talent of the band and the always unique and quality vocals you're not gonna get a whole lot of the same with this album or even really most of the stuff they did post that EP.
That EP is fucking fantastic
@@SevObzenIt’s very reminiscent of their last album, Sun Eater, while also having some elements from Demonocracy. They’re definitely happy with the prog death sound.
@@CrzyWzrd4Lsun eater is sooo good at first it wasnt my favorite but its actually so goddamn ledgendary
glad im not the only one who fucking LOVED that EP
What a surprise, Anthony talking about deathcore, I wish more metal reviews more often
Hell yes I wish metal was still in the top ten regularly
Sadly most of the more distinct deathcore bands are prolly too small for a Fantano mention like Psycho-Frame or Orphan. Same with the Hardcore scene.
Orphan 🤘
I mean he already mentioned this but JFAB is far from deathcore nowadays tbh ever since Sun Eater
@GT-qv1gl he's probably just not a fan of deathcore. He reviewed some obscure black and death metal bands
Shoutout to Navene from Entheos filling in on the drums.
Navene's resume is insane considering how little known he is
Entheos is awesome!
It’s a reunion between him and the singer of JFAC. They created a one off album under the name Fleshwrought 10+ years ago. If you listen, it’s very similar to Entheos and was likely the inspiration behind it.
Fantano mentioning Chelsea Grin and Attila no way hahahaha
Called them corny lmao
@@matea6well, they definitely are, Attila always has been, CG was until arrival of T. Barber
Especially on a JFAC review this band is a completely different genre
Nah Chelsea grin are OGs and were pioneers for the genre. CG was always dope and was never corny.
@@WinedandDined27 I'm def not hating on Chelsea Grin, their older stuff was solid
1:20 I get what he's saying and it certainly is a valid point, but I'd also like to argue that as of late deathcore has kinda found it's way to the public metal consciousness. If there's anything that the recent albums from Lorna Shore, Humanity's last breath and even bands like to the gave have shown us so far it's that the subgenre is much more today than it used to be. Even Chelsea Grin is kinda being viewed in a different light today.
Then again I am a fan of the genre so what do I know lol. Either way happy you're paying attention to some of these bands regardless of your opinion on their releases.
right, and the fathers are back even. ASP!
I was late to the deathcore party, but Lorna Shore and the last Allegaeon record (truly a masterpiece) have done a lot to open my eyes.
No, not at all. What you're seeing today with Lorna Shore and these other bands is exactly the same shit that happened back in the mid 2000s. Dumb, gimmicky bands getting popular over social media with kids who don't like metal at all but get drawn to deathcore because DUDE IT IS SOOOOO HEAVY AND THE BREADOWNS ARE SOOOO GOOD.
There is a reason why the few competent deathcore bands have moved on towards more progressive and ecletic styles, as exemplified by Whitechapel's last two albums.
Deathcore sucks. It's fun, but it's stupid and limited. To make deathcore interesting you have to stop playing deathcore (see the more recent work by Whitechapel or Fit for an Autopsy)
@@RafaelCDet Hey, thanks for your opinion- I hadn't quite considered it that way before. Hope you have a nice day and you listen to music you enjoy :)
I think Anthony described it pretty well, it's not a super versatile genre. When you think of popular bands like Lorna Shore and what part of their music is deathcore you're mostly left with flashy vocal performances and breakdowns. Aside from that they (and other deathcore bands) draw heavily on other subgenres for interesting musicianship. Deathcore goes through waves of external influence such as prog and recently symphonic black metal.
The guys in Chelsea grin and Attila were 19 year old scene kids when those records came out 😭. The genre has evolved tremendously over the years.
It becomes obvious how little somebody knows about anything when you hear them say incorrect statements with the utmost confidence and your actually familiar with the subject.
those bands didn't stop being bad, they just got bad in a different way.
@@PuppetPal_Clem fucking real
@PuppetPal_Clem new chelsea grin fucks lad. And you should probably listen to more of the modern stuff in the scene like lorna shore and fit for an autopsy
And yet those bands continued to find ways to still be shit even as they grew older
I would GREATLY suggest rediscovering Chelsea Grin's new material, particularly their most recent double album. The most mature the band has sounded in their entire existence
Really enjoyed this one. I'm a huge metalhead and, of the metal releases, this is easily a high ranker for the year so far.
completely agree. there hasnt been a single metal album (metalcore or deathcore) that has touched this one so far this year
yea this, vitriol, and ihsahn@@artistrankings6794
@@artistrankings6794Maybe this is just my biased opinion, but I feel like that's because this isn't deathcore at all. A lot of deathcore has the issue of sounding the same sometimes, or at the very least not being super ingenuitive, but Job for a Cowboy hasn't been deathcore for a very long time. This album is technical death metal more than anything, I suggest you look at that if you want more like it.
Completely agree, definitely this one goes to my top albums of the year by now.
Shoutout to my boy Navene for drumming on this jaunt
So good
Definitely goin up in album of the year for me. This and Cattle Decap's albums were just *chef's kiss*
See you space cowboy…
i read this in brad's voice (from his around the fur vid)
my brain is rot
See you space job for a cowboy
God
That’s a different band
different band
anthony, this is not MGMT ☹️
lol, he teasing
9/10 I’m calling it
Doesn’t matter lol. The mgmt album was mid. Very disappointing
Album was kinda not great, the singles were good but not much else, solid 5/10
I’m guessing decent 7
So far one of my favorite death metal releases for the year. No complaints. The cowboy finished the job.
Yeah long awaited too. Glad the cowboys made the comeback after almost a decade.
Deathcore is actually having a resurgence right now. Some are calling it a second wave.
💀
It's honestly starting to get pretty rancid though. Like, I've been hearing FANS of the genre complain that most of it sounds the same for years
This album isn't just deathcore it's more progressive technical death
in the video, he talks about the band's deathcore origins and how the genre's not sustainable. i think that's what OP is referring to @DashieNegan41
Any recommendations?
i love when fantano reviews metal
Jonny Davy has the most unique vocals in the scene, imo. You can pick him out like a giraffe in a hayfield. Hands down great progression in the band, excellent composition and full of fruit. It truly encompasses the depths of the spiritual world in turn of darkness and consumption of self in consideration of instruments, vocals, and lyrics. Stellar album
If this album was called "Job For a Butterfly", you woulda given it a 10/10
To Pimp a Cowboy. Not sure if Fantano likes rap metal though
Jonny Davy is one of the MOST recognizable vocalists in DM.
Still no mgmt 😭😭😭😭. The rollout is crazy. Also bring cal back
Fantano says Cal died from "overdosing" but authorities are yet to confirm this. I know for a fact that he laced his breakfast with fent.
Jonny Davy has been one of my favorite vocalists for a very long time.
would love to hear your thoughts on Vildhjarta or Defeated Sanity
Vildhjarta gang
thall
Defeated sanity is insanely good.
I remember when the Doom EP went sort of "viral" at his time... it was similar to how the internet went with Lorna Shore's "To The Hellfire" (considering that viralizing at the early 2000s didn't happen in an instant and in a way smaller scale than nowadays), all the comments about "WTF are those vocals, daaaaaaaaaamn"
I remember playing “entombment of a machine” to rile my mom up when i was in junior high
Navene Koperweis is a crazy drummer. He has so much groove and a near funky feel that adds dynamics to the metal chops
As a guitarist in a band who’s opened up for Attila more than once, this is an understandable pov lol
Was this in the MySpace days or more recently?
More recently. 2019/2021
@@nickmathis6136 that’s pretty cool, while I wouldn’t call them good their for sure good musicians and influential within the genre. Fronzes vocals in particular
I don’t care what people say, I will always love deathcore
For me this is an early metal album of the year. It’s crazy good. I’ve listened no less than 10-12 times all the way through. I’m so happy to see you review this. I’d love for you to do more metal like Enterprise Earth who also are an early contender for metal AOTY
I agree Anthony might not find all of the underground deathcore/death metal bands, but I'll suggest one which is more medium sized I guess - Shadow of Intent. They are my fav band of all time, a symphonic deathcore/death metal hybrid which IMO is kind of a perfect mix - not too melodic like a lot of melodic death, not purely brutal, not incredibly epic in every moment in a cheesy way, but incredibly epic still. Their album Melancholy is the one I'd recommend going for first, as it's kind of in between their other albums in terms of style (reclaimer being a different vibe symphonically and more deathcore, elegy the last album being darker in tone and more death metal). I'd also highly recommend seeing them live to anyone reading this, it's incredibly heavy, and melodic, and epic.
I think it's wild that he thinks sun eater's bass was lost in the mix
having solid bass on a metal album is a sure fire way to get a positive review from anthony
The new album is so good. Takes me back.
Demonacracy, sun eater, and this album are such a good trip. It’s like the band has been unraveling in the most satisfying way
Undoubtably my all-time favorite albums. Through the Chemical Doorway; Grinding Wheels; Etched in Oblivion; The Forever Rot; this ablum is FILLED with gems
Jonny's vocals are probably the most distinct in death metal, maybe apart from Travis Ryan.
Calling Chelsea Grin corny is crazy
REVIEW THE CLOWNS, MELON I SEE YOU WEARING THEIR SHIRTS
He did a quick yuno review a couple years back.
Anthony I'd love to hear you review some more modern Deathcore acts. There are some absolutely incredible ones. Main ones I'd point out are Nadir by Black Tongue and Ashen by Humanity's Last Breath as two records that stand out a lot.
And both Psycho-Frame records are absolutely insane.
Ruination was my angsty teenage album. Digging Moon Healer too.
Ruination is my absolute favorite album from them. It is amazing.
Holy shit, I didn't even know this band still existed. Nice.
It's funny to me that people still had any notions of them still being a deathcore band when their debut album _Genesis_ was straight up death metal and then they immediately went tech death/prog death with their 2nd album _Ruination_ and never looked back.
Deathcore might not be very versatile but it is artful.
There are plenty of great deathcore bands.
Interesting take about the guitars being more cluttered on Sun Eater, I felt the opposite - this album's mix feels busier to me and the bass feels just slightly less prominent (still shines, just comparatively)
Job for a cowboy. You activated a very specific part of my childhood anthony that i totally forgot about haha
YES!!! after years inactivity the boys are back!! ✊🏻🤘🏻
Love the shirt Anthony! Also glad ya liked the new J4AC album well enough!
I'd give it an 8.5. Never bores me, complex, interesting - love it.
I think you nailed your description of the drumming early in the video. It's nice to hear a human touch on the drumming the way the music is generally produced nowadays. I think they really nailed a good balance on this one. So far I'm still holding Sun Eater above it as far as the song-writing but finding them both very comparable in a good way
2:42 I think this is where bands such as Animosity, Despised Icon and early Suicide Silence stood out in the deathcore genre with that raw production.
Anthony they’re called “job for a cowboy”, not “cowboy bebop”, get it right please.
7/10 for a metal album might as well be a 10.
Y'all say this like he hasn't reviewed better metal albums and given them better scores
Definitely a 10 I wouldn't consider any of there albums under a 8 but fantano isn't good at metal scores you can tell he's very out of touch when it comes to any metal.
@@Fa113n94 stop the cap. He positively reviewed tomb mold, thantifaxath and artificial brain in the past couple of years he knows his stuff
@@Goose21 so three bands lol cool
@@Fa113n94there are much more.
This album is actually kind of fucking insane and made a fan of me. I remember first hearing these guys when Doom came out, it was NOT my thing. But now, I think Moon Healer can go down as one of the best prog or tech death albums in history.
i can't process the fact that doom is almost 20 years old
HOLD UP is that a Carnival of Carnage shirt??
Yup
My friend burned DOOM and other deathcore onto a CD for all the homies & I would play it in my ‘95 Toyota pickup as loud as possible
I fucking love job for a cowboy. Every fucking song. I can't stop listening and it's been like 14 years when I found them on I think it was headbangers ball vol 2.
now you have to give mgmt their 10 for making us wait so long
Incoming 6 😂
Saying Jonny Davy isn't immediately recognizable is a pretty wild take. I would strongly disagree
Job can do no wrong IMO, each album can stand on its own. Though I honestly thought their middle career stuff was a bit forgettable, they still had some great songs on them. Very excited to listen to this.
Now this was unexpected!
My favorite album is ruination by far. That album is a masterpiece. I feel like the speed & aggression was kind of lost by Sun eater but I’m glad they’re still making music, and Johnny Davy still sounds fucking incredible
As someone who doesn't love a lot of modern deathcore, I loved their debut EP. Just so raw and uncompromising. A complete opposite to the modern overproduced stuff. Excited to give their new sound a listen.
I personally loved the album and gave it a good review.
I’d personally give it an 8 just because of the subtle saxophone slipped into a couple tracks. I’m a sucker for saxophone
Love JFAC. Demonocracy was one of my intros into death metal. Then the band only got better from there. Good review Anthony!
He did not just put Attila and Chelsea Grin on the same level
Calling Chelsea Grin corny is insane
Even if a lot of deathcore is corny
@@stantorren4400but in that regard Chelsea Grin aren't particularly corny, especially put jext to Atilla
a 7 is crazy for this
This MGMT album was so good! I’ve always been a huge fan of their work. Still super hyped for the Jobe review.
Love that Anthony respects metal
Anthony got no right shitting on chelsea grin right now. Literally some of the best songs in the genre like hostage recreant
Let's be real for a second, that Deathcore Cryptopsy record went pretty hard. Matt McGachy was an underappreciated vocalist, he killed it on their next album 'Cryptopsy' too.
Cryptopsy is their best album to date, hands down
Nah. The self-titled was good, and the Tome EP’s are as well, but the Unspoken King was pretty rough. Also in my opinion the band will never touch Blasphemy Made Flesh or None So Vile.
@@c4gam1ng12 None So Vile is their best IMO. I'm just also a fan of their lesss beloved Deathcore era too tbh
💩
I'm glad job for a cowboy came back man, love this band.
I am not a tech death connoisseur so I don't have the fast knowledge you do, but after giving this album a good couple listens I'd say it's a good 8/10. I am a fan of the band to start with and I love everything they have done, but this is for sure the best thing they have written. As being a deathcore miscreant myself I love the Doom EP, but this is leagues above it in writing and composition
Love this record so much so far, Sun Eater left me VERY much wanting more in the same vein, and this delivers and then some!
okay now im starting to believe that he hated the MGMT lol
bro is reviewing everything but LOL
@@Noobelli he did the same thing with the Jane Remover album last year only to give it a 6 LMAOOOO
Davy’s vocals are extremely unique. What.
Oh man, I remember loving that first EP when it came out. Good to see Job continuing to challenge themselves when they could have just faded into irrelevance.
Hipster dorks always ranking death metal albums 7/10. He should work for decibel magazine
Review END. Such an incredible metalcore supergroup with no coverage. Get it together Melly
“Grinding Wheels of Ophanim” is one of the best songs I’ve heard in the last 5 years. Absolutely stellar album. “The Forever Rot” is also an excellent closer.
Taking this moment to recc my favourite tech death album: Sentient by Dissonance in Design (it’s perfect please listen to it)
if this album had been named "JOB FOR A IGOR" it would've gotten a 9
wholeheartedly disagree that davy’s vocals aren’t instantly recognizable lol guy sounds like johhny cage getting fatalitied in MK
Anthony, surely you mean employment for a cattle herder
Finally again an interesting music review from the Melon. Good job!
Check out nuclear power trio if you wanna hear the bassist truly let loose in the most fun of ways
Navene Koperweis is a legendary drummer
More metal reviews pls
Good to know the cowboys are back in town.🤠
That rant about deathcore made upset but I'm honestly just happy he's reviewing good metal.
Johnny Davy's vocals are nasty and cavernous, he has a really unique sound. Glad he's getting some respect.
They had another band while JFAC was on hiatus called Serpent of Gnosis that I enjoyed a fair bit considering I tend to prefer atmospheric black and funeral doom or stuff in that direction.
This makes me interested in a Lorna Shore Pain Remains album review. I know it's well after the normal review window for that but it really came out of nowhere for me and kicked my ass.
Gaw they really did blow up on myspace ill never forget that
Ive been a JFAC fan since the early MySpace days, and watching them evolve over the years has been awesome. I think I still prefer Sun Eater over Moon Healer as a whole; mostly I find Sun Eater to have more memorable tracks on it like Sun of Nihility than Moon Healer does. But both are great albums and I am glad for the return of JFAC
