Maybe you need to make some holes in the holder so that air can come through (edit: when the blade is released) and put some metal tabs in the end of the barrel to stop the holder from flying out with the blade. Then again, there probably is so much force that you'd destroy the holder anyway when you try to stop it from flying out with the blade.
Nice! You are right, some rotation would be extremely cool. Then the flight will be much more stable. If you use higher pressure (like 350 bar) you can also make the weapon portable.
I sometimes help my friend, who is a carpenter, in his workshop and he have told me a story when something like this hapenned in real life. Some guys have put a sawblade on a mashine that it wasn't build for- i'm not sure about the terminology but i think it's called a router in english, but It was a big, stationary one. The mashine could spin on a few gears like 3000 RPMs, 6000 and so on, all the way up tu 13000 RPMs. The blade however was rated to spin 3000 RPMs max. They forgot to make sure that the mashine was on the right gear and turned it on, on a 13000 RPMs setting. Suddenly they heard "hshshshshs" as the saw was passing thrue the air. One of the guys turned pale and said that it barely missed him. The blade dissapeared- all they found was a groove in the worshop wall, about the width of the saw. (Sorry if i misspeld something or my english is bad- it's not even close to my first language)
I once stuck a 10 inch 7200 rpm sawblade on a 13000 rpm angle grinder I made only one small cut with it and it cut really fast but it was too scary for me to use my fingers were about 2 inches away from the blade with no guard

Third ... But take a leaf out of Skallagrim's book, and make a torso, out of ballistic gel, with pvc pipes for ribs, and whatever you prefer as analogues for internal organs. Set the target ~30m from the 'muzzle', and vary the 'muzzle' velocity from 10 to 30m/s, in 5m/s increments, so that you enable viewers, whom are more used to ft/s, an idea of just what happens at those velocities. Getting the blade to spin, though, will take a lot of doing, mechanically speaking, especially if you are trying to get the blade to fly in a straight line; so simply firing it as is, personally speaking, is good enough ...
@@nigelft A potentially easy way of putting spin on it could just be a small rubber bump on one side of the muzzle at the end, similar to how "hop-up" works in airsoft guns. This would even have the added benefit of knocking the sabot loose sooner. That, or the blade gets stuck and the whole thing explodes. Either way it should be pretty entertaining!
Some years ago I read a news account about an industrial accident, where a saw blade on a table saw or some type of milling machine either shattered or flew off the arbor, sailed across the room, struck the wall, logged in it . Much like the clip with the 4x4 stock. Those saw blades can be dangerous when not properly used.
Well they have their similarities and differences. Furze is great with building complicated machines, welding, hydraulics and electrical stuff. He also has pretty wild imagination. Lauri in the other hand is great with machining and metal works all along, and he is great with destroying things with very innovative ways. In my mind there could be a collab where Furze builds some machine that should be undestructable, and Lauri finds a way to destroy it.
Hey Lauri, I have one idea for "safety research" that happened to me a few years ago. I left a bottle of R404a (a/c refrigerant gas) on the passenger in my car and parked it on a hot summer day. It heated up with the sun and exploded!! Destroyed the seat stuffing and the bottle was propelled and perforated the car door. It would be really nice to see that in slow motion! Maybe even during winter you can replicate the experiment by having the bottle sitting on a hot plate or something...
That was AWESOME! Yes Mr Laurie well done indeed. Now off to my air compressor, I know I've got some old circular saw blades laying around here somewhere? !
I feel like if it was spinning it would be more stable thru flight but that orange thing that’s hold big it actually did really good at keeping it level. Awesome vid!!

Lauri, I suggest adding a mechanism that allows the 3D printed Sabot to stop suddenly (while still allowing air to flow around it) so the saw blade maintains its momentum and flies free of the sabot, a bit like a medieval catapult. The reason the saw blade didn’t fly straight when it was shot at the concrete wall was because the sabot created drag, pulling the back of the saw blade down and the blade was not spinning, which would have stabilised the flight. Regardless, this video was extremely entertaining! If I may suggest something to shoot, a Brake Disc would be cool to see!
launch channel with a cross shape so there can be an axel, then one edge of blade can ride on a wood liner this will let the blade spin up, as it proceeds down the channel
Mechanical coupling would add too much drag for pneumatic propulsion. Would need to switch to a mechanical launcher of some sort. My initial line of thought would be modifying a saw to give it some sort of blade quick-release, let the blade drop on a strip of MDF for traction after it reaches the desired RPMs and have some guide strips to make the launch direction predictable if the self-gyro isn't good enough.
Good news more mayhem coming soon! I just started my printer and it's making more sabots for next weeks video :D
