Louie- If you ever have the time, I would really appreciate a video for those of us that are beat up really bad in the shoulders for work arounds to keep our pressing strong. I recently ruptured the long head on my right bicep and my left shoulder has something going on also. I can barely press(barbell or dumbbell) or do dips on parallel bars, but the odd thing I can do handstand pushups, Ring Dips and Ring Pushups with virtually no pain. I've already decided I'm going to push my extensions up and hopefully be able to JM Press with little to no pain. I remember you talking before about if you want to bench press a certain weight you need to have the upper back, lats and triceps of whatever number you're shooting for so thats going to be one of my main focus points. What if the bar is slow even with the proper percentages? Isn't it wasting time keeping the percentages if you're slow? Or should we lower the weight and raise the band tension
I just started lifting and recently found Westside Barbell on the net -- so forgive my ignorance. Why does WSB squat so wide? It almost looks like they are going to perform a split. Certainly NOT judging, I am legit curious.
Has your outlook on quad strength for unequipped raw squats changed at all (as in, is quad strength important)? Or do you still think that powerlifting squats are mostly hams/glutes/low back regardless of federation/rules? Thank you!
That is what our advanced powerlifting athletes are doing. 75,80,85% is still being used effectively with our other demographics! Thanks for the comment!
Didn't he say 60% for speed in the video? and 35% for explosiveness? That was the whole point of the car shifting analogy. Did we watch the same video ?!
Both have their place in a squat training program. At Westside, we will typically use box squats on dynamic effort lower, and free squats on max effort lower training days.
To maximize hip flexor activation during training. However for competition the stance is usually brought in a little bit for optimal leverage. This is person to person dependent due to limb length and hip mobility.
He doesn't even mention the quads when talking about the squats. I hope people understand the quads are not involved only the very niche weird equipped super wide stance way of squatting he does. It's a weird looking movement but if you enjoy it I guess you enjoy it but I hope people don't think this is the main approach for improving a regular squat.
Ofcourse he doesn't mention the quads. Conjugate is about improving weak points, and in the wide stance squat the hips and hamstrings are the weakest links. If you think the wide stance squat wont't build a normal squat then you don't master the wide stance squat. It'll give you crazy strong and stable hips, and that will improve your squat and deadlift like crazy!
Laura Phelps-Sweatt did not squat 775 though. I don't care if the lift counted, that was not a squat. Improper stance, wearing a suit, and the ROM was maybe 8 inches. She can MAYBE squat 500 pounds raw with proper form and depth.

Hi is box squat better than regular squat?
Both have their place in a squat training program. At Westside, we will typically use box squats on dynamic effort lower, and free squats on max effort lower training days.
But why such a wide stance just for shorter distance?
To maximize hip flexor activation during training. However for competition the stance is usually brought in a little bit for optimal leverage. This is person to person dependent due to limb length and hip mobility.
To load glutes and hams v quads. Bigger area of musculature and also builds hip power
