I served onboard Midway with CDR/CAPT Riley, who was the Supply Officer. My job was in Air Department as Acft Launch & Recovery Equip maintenance officer. During Desert Shield/Storm he kept us equipped, and afterwards we brought the ship to San Diego for decommissioning. Imagine my surprise seeing Jim after 25 years when my wife & I visited the ship back in 2017. So happy to see him still doing great things after all these years.
I was going through boot camp at the time. 30 Years is hard to believe it's been that long. We were on express training because at the time, we thought it was going to be a bloody war in the desert similar to the Iran Iraq War. There was a concern also that the current US troops didn't have combat experience like the Iraqi. They had home field advantage and had time to prepare during Desert Shield. There were friendly fire casualties and POWs. Gulf War illness is still a thing. Here's to all my brothers and sisters in arms. Job well done. Former Marine Sgt
0:56 - Is Riley telling Sea stories? 🤨 .... It was USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19), Naval Forces Central Command, for the entirety of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, serving under Vice Admiral Hank Mauz and Vice Admiral Stan Arthur.
