Very true! BTW, the actress Elizabeth Taylor, who was a strong advocate for AIDS research & prevention at the time, was the one who first asked Dionne Warwick to use this song as a fundraiser. Dionne was originally planning to sing it solo, but when she decided to do it for charity, she got some of her real-life friends to join in making this record... because that's what friends are for!!! 👍🏽

This song usually brings tears to my eyes. Watching them outwardly express their friendship, paired with those loving lyrics and that sweet harmonica, such a powerful combo. I'm not sure about the rest of them, but Gladys and Dionne are still alive, in their 80s, and still very good friends 💗

It's Dionne Warwick & friends who legendary Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight & Elton John. The song was a song released as a hit to raise funds for AIDS since the US government refused to fund AIDS research or create a vaccine. AIDS was in the 80's considered a "Gay Disease" and not supporting it by the conservative right Christians and other religious communities....so Dionne and her friends here put out this song to raise money for AIDS research since there was no cure and still no cure today like Cancer AIDS continues to change and mutate in different forms. I think the song got a Grammy.

Dionne Warwick is a legend. She blazed the trail in pop music starting in the 1960's that her younger cousin Whitney Houston then followed along in later. All of these people have been friends for decades. Gladys and Patti LaBelle are just 4 days apart in age, and have been friends with Dionne for decades, even recording together, can you think of 3 current female headliners who would sing together today?

Dionne Warwick is a living legend. Aretha Franklin is the only female with more charted hits during the rick era. Dionne had hit after hit in 1960s with sings covered by many people, including Luther Vandross who counted her as his top musical inspiration. She grew up in Gospel singing family and plays and reads music (advanced degrees in music). She was first African American to win Grammy in “pop” category and later first to win both R&B and pop categories in same year. She had huge influence on her younger cousin, Whitney Houston.

  • @zanohoriamazo1

Song is Burt Bacharach brilliance, the composer pianist who along with songwriter Hal David, put Dionne on the map back in the day like mid/late ‘60’s when it wasn’t easy for black artists to get recognized across demographics. Even Dionne thought after meeting with them in songwriting office in New York, that they were jive talkin when they told her they loved her voice, & she thought she’d never hear from them again. Sure enough they got her into the studio, & the rest is like a lightning rod: I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, Walk on By, I SayA Little Prayer (also covered by diva Aretha Franklin), Alfie, What the World Needs Now, & A House is Not a Home, also covered brilliantly by Luther Vandross. So Burt along with his then wife Carol Beyer Sager, composed & wrote the song & with late iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor, made it a fundraiser for AIDS research. The entertainment industry & culture in general were highly impacted by that epidemic.

Surprise! You must have some great friends to surprise you with this great song featuring Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Gladys Knight with an equally powerful message! From here, there's no place to go but Gladys Knight & The Pips' live take on "Landlord" (featuring Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder), "I Care About You" by Milestone (Babyface, After 7 and KiCi and Jo), "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" by The Philadelphia All Stars and The Temptations battling The Four Tops during The Motown Special.
With respect to Dionne Warwick - she was so great, so many artists covered her songs from Isaac Hayes to The Stylistics to Luther Vandross but I would suggest "Walk On By" live vocal 1965, "You'll Never Get To Heaven( If You Break My Heart)", "Then Came You" (with The Spinners) and "Deja Vu" (and that's just a small fraction of her many hits!)
And, yes - they really are friends! The song was first solely done by Rod Stewart but Dionne decided it would sound better with her singing it with her famous friends and the rest, as they say, is history!
