Actress Elizabeth Taylor, who was a strong advocate for AIDS research & prevention at the time, was the one who first asked Dionne Warwick to use this song as a fundraiser. Dionne was originally planning to sing it solo, but when she decided to do it for charity, she got some of her real-life friends to join in making this record... because that's what friends are for!!! 👍🏽
Lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager and Music by Burt Bacharach. Released as a charity single to support AIDS research and prevention, the song raised awareness and $3 million dollars for the cause. Aside from becoming the unofficial anthem for the fight against AIDS, “That's What Friends Are For” also became the No. 1 song of 1986. This song was a MUST DO for your playlist.... you know why.

Will y'all subscribe to this boy's channel, please?! His 1,000 watt smile is completely free and good for your health 😁😁😁 ❤❤❤ I loved this song growing up but I always couldn't wait for the Gladys Knight part , she runs away with it 😀
JM, you should realize, as I'm sure you do, these four individuals are among Music Royalty. Each of them have dozens of great songs and sold MILLIONS of records. Having their names in your Playlist is serious Cool.
Beautiful song, beautiful performers and beautiful message. Thank you for reacting to this classic. Always love to see my favorite, Stevie Wonder. 👏👏👏🥰
Dionne had great success starting in the 1960's. Her aunt Cissy Houston, along with her other aunts and uncles had gospel success as the Drinkard Family singers, Cissy went on to some success as a solo artist but sang on hundreds of other artists songs as part of the Sweet Inspirations as backup singers, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley among them. Most notably, Cissy's high notes in Aretha's Aint No Way are legendary. Cissy also happened to have a very famous daughter, Whitney Houston, Dionne's first cousin, who followed in Dionne's footsteps in pop music. Also, they are cousins to opera legend Leontyne Price as well. Talented family.
This song was written about friends who had aids in the 1980s. There was so much fear around aids and this song raised money for aids and reminded us that we are all united supporting others ❤
@celestetelittek7360 that is not quite the correct story. This classic was first recorded by legendary Rod Stewart for the movie Night Shift. It did not become a hit for him, nor was it popular. One late night, Ms. Dionne was watching the movie and heard the song. At the end of movie, she read the credits to the song and was shocked to see that Burt and his wife Carole wrote the song. Ms. Dionne then called Burt and wanted/asked to record it. He and his wife were shocked that she wanted to because again, the song had gotten NO attention at all. However, they obliged. Ms. Dionne got Gladys, Stevie, and Elton to join her on it. It became a huge hit for Ms. Dionne and became the biggest song of 1985 and won 2 Grammys. Ms. Dionne, Burt, and Carole, along with the rest who were involved on the song/with (Ms. Elizabeth Taylor was the first to suggest it to everybody)decided to donate all the proceeds to AIDS research and care ($3 mil and counting) because the pandemic was killing so many around the world, including their musical peers and friends. 😊😊
JSYK...... You have 384 artist/bands/videos in your Playlist Names as of now. Some of the most legendary and different genres music ever created... Keep Smiling, That's What Friends Are For. See you again soon.
Stevie Wonder's smash hit soul/funk single "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" released back in 1965 from the earlier years of his career is smokin' hot for that time period. The Funk Bros. with their instrumentation performance on the recording enhances this song as well.🎤🎺🥁🎵🎶🔊🔥📻🎧
The incomparable Legendary Icons here! They all dont play around! And yes, Ms. Dionne voice is powerful yet so smooth. Ms. Dionne is friends with all of them that's how they all did this classic together bc of her. Btw, you are handsome dude, lol 😊
There is another version that was done later on that includes Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder. Dionne and Whitney are cousins. The other guy ( with the hat) is Elton John.
The charity was the Elton John AIDS Foundation which has raised tens of millions for AIDS research. And he has the biggest and most popular Oscar Night party in all of Hollywood which raises millions every year from celebrity donations. Aside from Elvis and Michael Jackson, Elton John is the most popular solo male vocalist of all time, having sold around 250 million records and more than fifty top forty hits and about ten number one hits over six decades. Elton and Stevie have been friends for more almost fifty years. They even show up at one another's concert occasionally. Stevie plays harmonica on Elton's hit "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues". During the pandemic, Stevie recruited Stevie for a song on his album called "The Finish Line". In 1969, an unknown Elton did a cover of Stevie's "Signed Sealed Delivered" for a budget record company specialized in covers.
The money was raised for AMFAR, a U.S. based charity at the asking of Elizabeth Taylor. Dionne Warwick asked her real friends to join her and she donated all proceeds, she noted she ran into Elton in the store and asked him to join her. He supported the effort but the money and organization was via Dionne. Elton had recognized Dionne being first artist to stand up when AIDS emerged in the 80s.
What is the story behind the song "That's What Friends Are For"? Warwick, who had previously raised money for blood-related diseases such as sickle-cell anemia, wanted to help combat the then-growing AIDS epidemic because she had seen friends die painfully of the disease.
?PERHAPS you NOT recognizing Sir EJ's face or voice means that you've fallen a wee bit behind on your reactions to his VAST and VARIED musical catalog and it was a DIVINE SIGN to get his songs in some regular rotation... Ya figure? lol Just a thought from a fan! haha,,, ENJOY! Shawn
the guy with the hat is the incomparable Sir Elton John
That's What happens when four iconic superstars get together for a very well written song. Thanks again.
The Incomparable Gladys Knight.... Incredible.
Incredible for sure. She's still performing at age 80!

Dionne has a real nice song from '63 titled "Don't Make Me Over" which was recorded when she was about 20 years old.
Great song

Beautiful song, beautiful performers and beautiful message. Thank you for reacting to this classic. Always love to see my favorite, Stevie Wonder. 👏👏👏🥰
Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight. All legends. 😊
The proceeds from this song were donated as a charitable fund raiser. And yes, all of these artists are good friends.

Gladys Knight often referred to as "The Queen Of Soul".... She earned that title.
Wrong! Gladys Knight is referred to as the Empress of Soul!

This was not for the EJAF. His foundation wasn’t founded until 1992. This was one of the first things he forayed into for the fight against AIDS.
