My dad used to collect clams that way in Australia back when we lived there in the fifties. At that time they were used as fishing bait but in Canada and North America, we learned that they were good eating. My friends from Long Island eat them raw.
I guess im randomly asking but does anybody know a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
We had the best day with you guys! Awesome GoPro footage of us in the water 😍 We actually just got back from tuatua-ing- hard going at first but came away with quite a few! Wish you were all here to share them with us! Brilliant video guys 😘😘😘 Cheers, Sheena
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena I was taught to put crush red pepper for 10mns after changing the water. We have lil necks in New England. I love cooking without garlic, onions & beer or wine. Hope you all have a blast, tks for sharing.
Thankyou so much Thomas and Sheena for "Chasing A Plate" with Eric, Alison, Josh and Ashleigh. Looks like you all had an absolute ball with "Local" hosts. Must admit l had to do a second take when Eric described being with locals of NZ normally you guys are the ones talking about the locals in another Country!! Thanks for allowing us a peek into having a relaxing time together. Safe travel to all.
This was a fun vlog to watch - nothing better than experiencing the ocean together and bringing home a haul. Thanks to Thomas & Sheena for being great hosts.
Hi Eric and Allison, I just found out your RUclips channel last week and binge watched a lot of your vlogs and I can say I'm already a fan of you two. Continue making these awesome vids! Cheers from the Philippines 😊
NZ Tip for tourists- On most beaches like this in NZ you are on you own regarding if you get in trouble in the water. Even popular beaches which have beach patrols will only have a small area indicated by flags which is monitored to see if people are in trouble. Outside of these flagged area treat the water as you would an unpatrolled beach. Many people think that our sea conditions are like neighbouring Australia - they aren't. NZ's drowning rate is twice Australia's. Just because you found Australia's sea conditions (even with all the 'wildlife hazards') easy doesn't mean you find NZ's beaches the same. Generally NZ coastal waters are cool to cold (basically the further south you go the colder it gets) even in height of summer (when this clip was shot) . If you are going to be spending a bit of time in the water - aka in collecting shellfish, make sure you limit the time in water and/or have some thermal insulation like the neoprene jackets Thomas & Sheena are wearing. Hyperthermia proceeds 5 times quicker in a body of water, so even though its nice & warm temp out of water, people still do get hyperthermia in the water. Also the NZ coastal waters can have lots of hidden risks which aren't obvious to visitors. Due to being surrounded by large open oceans, surf and weather conditions can change very rapidity. Its not unusual to get a 'rogue' wave twice the height of the average - so if it 1.5 metres (5 ft) is average wave - you could get a 3 m (10+ ft) random wave quite easily. NZ beaches have high tidal differences (vs the most of the US's 3-6 feet or the Med) ranging from 3.5 metres (11.5 ft) to 2 m (6.5ft) which means the reverse flows of the water flowing away from the beach toward open sea can be very strong, what gets often called rips, which can easily knock even strong people off their feet with the flow out to sea being too strong swim directly against. If you are caught in outgoing rip flow, don't panic, and don't try to swim against the flow (you will get nowhere and fatigue quickly), but swim across the flow, in parallel with the beach till you get out of the outgoing flow when you can then swim back in. Beware that by the time you exit the outgoing rip you maybe a long way out. If you are going to go in water waist height or higher be a confident and reasonable swimmer, and never swim alone - that means have someone else who is a confident swimmer in the water close by. Parents should never let children swim by themselves while they wait on the beach and should strongly consider putting the kids in flotation assitors (ie lifejackets) if there's any chance the children getting into water conditions they can't cope with. . If the parent(s) aren't good swimmers, always have the kids swim on patrolled beaches in the areas which are monitored by surf lifesavers/ beach patrols. With increased tourist numbers, particularly from countries which don't have cultures which teach people to swim generally (and by the way NZ could do massively better in this regard as well), too many NZ visitors are facing tragic events in the ocean. I myself have had to rescue tourists who really should not have been swimming in the sea conditions at the time, and in one of the times I helped it was basically luck which stopped a tragedy.
@D D Not when you look at the actual stats. watersafety.org.nz/2018-preventable-drowning-report Pacific islanders are 10% in drownings last year and they been running at 9% for the last 5. That pretty in line with the Pacifica demo in the general population which was 7.4%in 2013 (the last census) and they are likely to be about 9% or thereabouts when finally Stats NZ release the 2018 census data. Thats the problem with stereotyping, all to often it not based on reality. The problem group in drownings is the 65+.
Brilliant video ! I loved the slow motion shots of the waves hitting you guys :) very simple and perfect way of cooking your catch as well. Really enjoyed this.
I'm a huge fan of Thomas and Sheena! Seeing you, WayAway and them all together was such a treat. I'm also a fan of any and all seafood...those tuatua looked amazing!
Another great video with another great travel couple, WayAway. The slow motion and effects were great, from the beach to the sunset at the end. I always enjoy your adventures, thank you!
Unique video ! Never seen anything like this ..damn Alison i'm jealous of your body! Well done and high five for good workout girl ;) awesome work guys :)
My boyfriend and I usually watch the Flash or some other show when we get home from dinner. Today, that was the plan as usual but when we got home he asked me (verbatim), "Hey do you wanna watch a video from your favorite vloggers?" I knew he meant you guys! He's only watched one video so far beforehand. Today we watched another video and he says he can see why I watch your videos all the time! Glad to be a channel member! Thanks for entertaining us all
You should have eaten them with a bit of melted butter on them and a squeeze of lemon juice. Also, you could have saved the wine/stock you cooked them in to make a broth with some garlic, onion and cream and seafood in.
Omaha my local beach! Can't believe you went up my local mountain where I used to live in England (Helvellyn) and you're here on the other side of the world at my local beach.
Get snapper at the southern end of Omaha too, nice beach, good at tawharanui too. Leave your tua tua in water over night to get rid of the sand, then shell and scoff at the same time 😁raw shell fish is the best !!
You should let them set in salt water over night and they will spit out all the sand. So pleased you are enjoying our beautiful country Aotearoa/New Zealand Maori ora
We were out collecting nice and early so these had about 11 hours to spit. Out of all of them I think 3 still had sand in. Allison sure got unlucky there!
Maybe next trip u should do a whole trip of catching Kai Moana (seafood) there is so much Kai (food) u can find if u make contact with the right ppl. Just saying Maori ppl are always open to help with it as long as u give a koha (gift) u can get tuatua, to pipi( different taste, but same looking) oysters or Kina ( sea urchin), and if u lucky enough u might be able to try a traditional Maori Kai which is a hangi
HI guys, that was pretty funny - you looked like you've never been in the waves before?! Anyway, *please* drive carefully in your campervan and remember that Nelson is in a state of emergency at the moment due to extreme fire risk and drought, as well as an enormous forest fire raging. This might affect your route to Christchurch, so check carefully. Be safe, looking forward to following more NZ adventures! Kia ora
Glad you enjoyed our struggle 😂 It was mostly because we were trying to duck down to pick up the Tuatua, but then you'd get owned by a wave. It was actually pretty challenging! And thanks for the heads up 🙌
Tuatua and pipis are different - tuauta are found on sandy beaches whereas pipi are found in estuaries. If you are given some tuatua or pipi and you can't tell which one you have, the pipi has a solid white, elongated symmetrical shell with the apex at the middle. It's covered by a thin yellow coating. The tuatua has an asymmetrical shell, with an off-centre hinge.
Love all your videos..they show me the world in I way I can not get a way too. No offence, but your wife is the most beautiful orange headed woman I have ever seen...she is just too cute.....you are a very lucky man to have her.
A rake better than toes ? "T" shape with a triangular net from the T to the shaft ? push and scoop? (French/British style) However the most interesting for me was the excellent video quality and composition (Eric) ? Also you guys have Tattoos ! some words or closeups ? why and where > ?

I won’t be able to join until Friday. But I do have a couple questions. 2 about your travels and 2 maybe more personal...
You guys did really well getting tuatua Maori call shellfish "Kaimoana" which means "Food from the Sea"
I guess im randomly asking but does anybody know a way to log back into an Instagram account..?

West Coast seems particularly bad for this - Muriwai, Piha etc. It seems an Indian tourist gets in trouble on every episode of Piha rescue.
Best editing I've seen in a long time. Great job. Oh, and Alison looked gorgeous in the water ;)
So glad you folks are taking your time over here.
Brilliant video ! I loved the slow motion shots of the waves hitting you guys :) very simple and perfect way of cooking your catch as well. Really enjoyed this.
Alison with the great beach Bod! Great video y’all.
I did exectly the same thing while I was in NZ last November. Absolutely loved it. Safe travels as always.
Catching your own meal sounds boss! Beautiful beach and you are making me hungry with all the clams! Really cool experience
I'm a huge fan of Thomas and Sheena! Seeing you, WayAway and them all together was such a treat. I'm also a fan of any and all seafood...those tuatua looked amazing!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the collab, we has a blast!
WOW , Thanks Eric and Allison, stay safe.
This is ridiculously sick! Three of my favourite RUclips couples, all in one video! Love love love it! ❤️❤️❤️
Another great video with another great travel couple, WayAway. The slow motion and effects were great, from the beach to the sunset at the end. I always enjoy your adventures, thank you!
Thanks!
So impressed when Alison opened her clam. Looked delicious.
Unique video ! Never seen anything like this
..damn Alison i'm jealous of your body! Well done and high five for good workout girl ;) awesome work guys :)
Yeah they are so good when we would go up north (north island) we would get these and crayfish
What a team you are! Great videos as always, makes me smile😀😀

Ok, I can't watch anymore of this until I have a glass of New Zealand white wine in hand ;-)
Haha good one
Handmade pasta vongole: white wine in it & with it.
Oh yeah 🍷
I’m an Aussie but I must say the Kiwis are so good at making Sauvignon Blanc ! I love Kiwi wines !
... and the world's best Cab.Sav. & Syrah are made in South Australia.
Probably my favourite adventure. We love your channel. Thanks so much, Ted and Sarah
Glad you enjoyed it! It was one of our favorites too 😄
Glad to see you guys with Chasing a Plate Loved it
Glad you enjoyed it! We love those two ❤️
That's how you dig out clams in the south of Spain too xD It's what old people do on the beach in the summer evenings.
Such enviable fun! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
this is what a sunburn looks like, boys and girls....
That was fun watching u guys jump the waves !
Actually, the part of the clam that you think was a tongue was actually the foot of the clam.
Great videos these, always interesting and your willingness to try new things in different cultures and countries is commendable 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Craving clams and white wine at the moment...YUM! Miss clam digging as a child here in Southern Cal. ;(
Again, awesome video. Thank you for sharing!
In some places, in the states, very popular are fried clam strips! So, it is VERY COOL to see that in other places, clams are still eaten!!!!

You guys are amazing! I'm supposed to be working, but alas....I'm watching you guys dig for clams...
Psht, work can wait 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video!
Eating clams,ugh !
Such a cool activity to learn a true kiwiana thing we all grow up doing going to the beach and sometimes we find food
Seems like a good surfing spot! 😍😍😍😍
Guys, fill a shot glass with malt vinegar and dip them in malt vinegar to wash off the sand and flavor them before you eat throw in your mouth.
Pipis
You should have eaten them with a bit of melted butter on them and a squeeze of lemon juice. Also, you could have saved the wine/stock you cooked them in to make a broth with some garlic, onion and cream and seafood in.

great vlog looked cool 👌🏼
In Australia we call them Pipi's however we never ate them we used them as bait for fishing.
Where?
lol this legit looks like a tone of fun
Our kids would have a blast in those waves!
Looks like Omaha beach?
Fun video! Now I need to plan a trip to New Zealand to gather up some tuatua (sp?). I also enjoyed the editing on this video as well. 👍🏼
Thanks! Hope you get to do it some day, it was tons of fun 👌
The music on this is so soothing! Where do you guys even find em
The Tua Tua shuffle good fun plus your getting a feed to
That looked a lot of fun!
Just saying, they're not clams they're pipis😊
Tuatua are a lot bigger than Pipis and not as common.
Pipis smaller and Different in shape than tuatua I mean any Kiwi born here should know that
Pipi are a type of clam
Dude, pips aren't Tuatua, completely different shape and size.
Your doing the pipi shuffle wahoooo this is what i was bought up on fresh seafood and happy times 😂😂🤙 mean guys
So nice I can taste them from Australia! Any reason you guys are the only ones wearing sunglasses in the sea?
Looks like a lot of fun😁Too funny!
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena nice 👍
Fresh water actually, they live in Salt water, and yet still hold sand.
We like to leave the tuatua soaking in saltwater overnight but usually leave them for a day
Are you going to be in Napier this weekend for Art Deco?
yea bro called the pipi dance
Yay!! New post!!💕
The dance is called the pipi twist.
Enjoyed your Content
yoo loved this vlog but you dont HAVE to pick them out once they open lol but hope you have a great time in our home much love
Yes, leave them in to absorb a little wine.
They’re actually Pipis and try them with malt vinegar and onion 😋
Where is the beach? Is on north islands?
This is the way to live.
HO well its time for new zealand lamb with mint sauce . cool vid
That's become one of our favorite dishes 👌
Enjoyed this ! 😎
Tua Tua fritters mmm yummy. Have to try those next time if you can.
Nice tats and thanks for another great video. :)

They are not Called Clam here they are Called Pipis us Maoris we don't put wine in the Pipis we just put hot water or put it in the fire.
What a great video!
They are not rare... we have them on the East Coast of Australia... we call them Pippies. We use them for fish bait.
These shells are not exclusive in NZ. You can find these in Philippines as well.
Nope Tuatua are endemic to NZ. You may have something very similar in Philippines but not the same.
They are pipis, you gotta dig deeper for tuatuas
No these are tuatua pipi are dark shade.
They wash up on the Beach in Ohope, twice a day on the dot at 5.30am and pm.
i agree these are pipis. thats what we call them when we go to the beach in Mahia New zealand
Right, Tuatua are larger than these Pipi.
omg this place is beautiful! where on the north island is this?
That made me hungry for cockles.
Well I spotted three clams straight away!
There are various techniques of feeding for tuatua when trying to gather them dude
us maori call them pipis too
glad you had fun x
Tuatua and pipis are different - tuauta are found on sandy beaches whereas pipi are found in estuaries. I like them with malt vinegar, and finely chopped brown onion. I like to grab the foot, and not let it retract.
Drowning doesn't look too bad
Nice so fun ! 😎
Which beach is it in NZ ?
should have waited for the tide to go out further
NZ 4 Seasons in one day 😄 No place like Home 🇳🇿
I could watch Alison jump up and down in the surf all day!
Keep it professional!!
@@annother3350 Ok - I would happily be paid to watch Alison jump up and down in the surf all day!
What a creep

Legally you are not allowed to use any device, including driftwood, to help you dig for them.

Ugh! This makes me miss home so badly!
Those are rock star shades
