My 1997 F150 needs new plugs and wires according to my local mechanic. He quoted me $450 for the job!! I went to AutoZone and picked up the plugs and wires for $119 and thanks to your video I feel confident that I can do this job. I guess I need to go back and get some anti-sieze grease and diaelectric stuff and maybe a six pack of Bud heavy and I'll be ready. Pray for me.
I think folks come here to get tips & tricks for accessing the hard to reach plugs, (#4 & #8). Although your video was thorough as far as showing what you did, you made no mention of HOW you did it. On my 97 Expy 4.6l, I'm still trying to find useful suggestions as far as how to access #8. You make no mention of extensions used, easiest access routes, etc., and I think that's where this video falls short. Still though, a much better put together video than I could ever do for sure, so kudos.
My 97 had a misfire on 7 too. Bought plugs and wires(needed badly) and when I got to seven the wire was not on tight!!! So much power and running so smooth now. Thank you so much guys!
Well it's 11/20/2020 and this helped me tremendously !! Yeah a buddy donated a 1998 F-150 with a 4.6L V8 Windsor non coil over, and the majority of videos on RUclips are about coil over system !! THANKS A BUNCH GUYS !😉😉 p.s. He said that a tune up was done before I got the truck ! Reports came back, and the results confirmed that, that too was a lie !! Electrodes on some were completely gone !!
Great video guys not as bad of a job as it looks! yeah it sucks to have to remove a few things to get to them! But it's not like you have to do it every day on your vehicle!
How much dielectric grease should be used on both ends? I just did this today and I got a loss of power after finishing. Could using to much dielectric grease do this? If so how to I remove the extra dielectric grease?
So basically I pulled all my ignition coils out at the same time and I need a diagram showing not only the routing of the coils but how long each one is. I need to know how long cylinder 1s ignition wire is and so on.
So guessing from the lack of issues these guys had removing the plugs that this engine isn't covered under TSB 08-7-6 or does it look like it had the plugs already been done?
this video just shows you doing, but i dont see how to remove hoow in the heck you can get to the # 8 plug wire, let alone the actual plug. the fuel lines and the rail make it impossible. do i need aftermarket fuel lines? i saw on the passenger side you have some couplings on your hoses down by the #4, like they were extended.
Hey did you ever figure out how to get to 3 and 4? I have the same issue on my 97' Expedition. Did you end up having to cut those hoses and putting a fitting on them?
I just put an alternator on my truck today but I'm just going to pay my way out of this headache. 😖 Oh yea, plus I also saved a ton of money by switching to Geico. 🦎😉
I'm happy my 2000 5.4 in my f-150 doesn't have the plug wires. Just extra stuff to move/work around. I wonder if a little PB Blaster in the back spark plug holes would work to help break the old plugs loose. I didn't have any problems changing the plugs in the in the 2000 and 02 5.4 and 6.8 Superdutys that i had. But these f150s have no room to work unless you disassemble the engine compartment.
I agree the 7 and 8 plugs are a pain to get to. Almost need a body lift to get the room for them. I like the 5.4L but its a pain to work on it. I do like the coil-on-plug coil packs over the dizzy (distributor). 243K miles on my F150 and still going strong. But the body is rusting away. So I get to look for a crew cab F150 4.6L with the M5R2 (not a fan of the auto).
Autozone gave me iridium plugs i installed 4 but the engine runs like garbage so i turned it off and its staying off. It worked fine before with platinum plugs i will be getting those.
30 minutes of edits you can guarantee if you do this right and you do this safely you will be under here under your hood depending on whether you're doing plugs in coils or not for a few hours trust me it's just the way it is this might be one of the most sensitive things that end up screwing a vehicle up that are cleaning out dust and particles is so important in 3 hours with holes right down into your motor and bolts and parts and dirt in other elements flying around more often than not when someone's not paying attention or rushing they either end up throwing dirt down there old gooped up oil or grease and even dropping bolts and guess what my brother did that I think 20 years ago and chose not to say a damn thing... Well Kiss It Goodbye if you drop anything down there and don't retrieve it...
I did it without taking as many parts off, I removed the air intake after the air filter all the way to the throttle body. You don't have to take off that power distribution block. Use a 12" wobble extension teamed up with a 6" wobble extension and a u joint for cylinder 3. Cylinder 4, I used a 12" wobble extension and squeezed my hands back there. Little room but i made it happen. Ill post a video soon.
to get to plugs 4 and 8 sucked, but this video helped with showing to remove the junction box for #4....I didn't see any tips for #8...I think removing the boot was the hardest part for that one. Found plug well for #7 full of water, which was most likely my intermittent miss. Probably from me cleaning the the engine a few years ago. Very helpful video....thanks.
I'm having a hell of a time getting 4 out, any tips anyone has would be much appreciated, I need a deep well extractor on it but can't get enough room to pound the extractor on

I needed this video to get the number 3 plug. After following the instructions it only took ten min start to Finnish thanks guys great help
One the most descriptive videos I ever seen for a vehicle project.. well done thank you..
Great job, very helpful. I am going to have my grandson do this, as he has borrowing it. Thanks for the clear instructions and great camera work.
Great DIY video! I hate doing plugs on newer vehicles but with this video as a guide makes it sooo much easier.
Lol 0l look map look BBY
I thank you so much for helping me to do the same in my 1998 F150 extended cabin. I was afraid but seeing your video I was confident.
Many Thanks!! The mechanics in my area should watch this video as they seem to have trouble stopping misfires after spark plug change.

Great video thanks man. You really helped me do this job on a 1998. Best how to video I have ever watched
Great video guys not as bad of a job as it looks! yeah it sucks to have to remove a few things to get to them! But it's not like you have to do it every day on your vehicle!
Thanks for making this! Helped me save $400 :) Great video!
Great video, I saw anothers videos and nothing compare this, thk guys for showing us how to do it, now I can fix my flintstone car.
It was truly easier than it looked. Thank you. I need the video of replacing the antenna and the complete antenna cable.
Well done guys. Thanks.
Very, very good instructions.
Excellent video
Muy bien todo un maestro bendiciones Sr buen trabajo 👌🏻
Great video, good job
Nice video; thank you.
Awesome video the best I have seen thanks will do them for my cousin today.
Very respectfully, Hugo Melchor USN RET Disabled American Veteran>
great video guys
Mine is a 98. It looks just like this one. 4.6L engine. Thank you. I am going to try this. Auto Zone said there was a misfire on cylinder 7.
How much dielectric grease should be used on both ends? I just did this today and I got a loss of power after finishing. Could using to much dielectric grease do this? If so how to I remove the extra dielectric grease?
It’s like helping dad but not getting yelled at and told to HOLD the light…
good video. I have a 1998 f150xl. any tips for removing a spark plug where the hex nut has completely rusted away? thanks
Hey there. Thanks for the upload!
I have a question... Do all three Silicone gaskets, on the boot, go in the spark plug cavity?
wow, my 1997 has the Coil packs and stuff.. this looks 5X as easy than the 5.4 liter EFI
Can you post a text version of the parts used either in a reply or on the video description please. I just need to know so I can buy them. Thank you.
So basically I pulled all my ignition coils out at the same time and I need a diagram showing not only the routing of the coils but how long each one is. I need to know how long cylinder 1s ignition wire is and so on.
how nice to see a pro video, no bad angle, bad sound , bad lighting amateur vid
You can't re-install a new spark plug :P haha great video, thanks!
Thanks.

the hoses that lead to my heater core are in the way of accessing #3 and #4. The way my hoses are connected look different from what is in the video.
this vehicle calls for AWSF-32PP, but I'm having hard time finding them. What sparks plugs where used?
I bought basic Motorcraft plugs for mine
Is that a 4.6? My 97 5.4 has coil on plug.
Connect the wahr to the coal.
Little tip!!!Tape the extension and the socket together!!!! Not covered in this video or any I have watched
I have a 98 F250 with the 4.6, changed plugs and wires, but my #4 wire won’t stay on #4 plug, how can I fix that?
Is it slipping off of the coil or the plug?
what If you don't have a tool to measure the foot per pounds? is that a much have? or I there a way around it?
does the 97 4.6 f150 have the spark plug issue?
How long does it generally take to replace the wires?
Where you from?
I'm happy my 2000 5.4 in my f-150 doesn't have the plug wires. Just extra stuff to move/work around. I know this video is 3 years old but what's the average cost to get just the plugs changed with me providing the parts.
tobroke2007 I spent $45 on just motorcraft plugs last weekend. Hope this isn't to late
I just broke one off in cylinder one. On my 4.6 2 valve Crown Vic engine.... Not a good day
What kind of engine is this one
Autozone gave me iridium plugs i installed 4 but the engine runs like garbage so i turned it off and its staying off. It worked fine before with platinum plugs i will be getting those.
Anyone know where can I buy wireless spark plugs?
JosEmanuel Gomez lol
Tesla will start making them 2018
JosEmanuel Gomez they are all wireless! There are no wires on the plugs when you buy them. :)
😆😂🤣🤪🙄

Is it completely necessary to take them off in order?I
Katherine Gordon very lol
Yes, if you dont you will blow your spark pistons
If you're watching this I recommend using about 30% of the anti-seize on the spark plugs that Joe uses. That's waaaay too much.
I guess a V6 is same process?
never ending tool list
and this is why I am NOT a fan of FORD. they make you take half the engine apart just to change some fucking spark plugs
I did it without taking as many parts off, I removed the air intake after the air filter all the way to the throttle body. You don't have to take off that power distribution block. lol ya cause i took half my engine off my bronco when i changed my plugs
Don't gap the Iridium plugs if you buy Iridium or platinum for that matter. You'll crack the electrode.
Why are you using autolite, anyone knows that for ford you use motorcraft. Then you wonder why it's running rough.
only the 3valve engines do
Don't think its really think its necessary to remove the air filter and all that other stuff.

Bit heavy on the anti-seize. Also, need to over-torque these plugs to 20-25 ft lbs so the don't pop out.
The #4 spark plug is a bitch to get out no room.
I'm having a hell of a time getting 4 out, any tips anyone has would be much appreciated, I need a deep well extractor on it but can't get enough room to pound the extractor on
These comments..... Y'all act like its so hard to get to the back plugs. Its not! Just get in there and ducking do it!!!
didnt even use motorcraft plugs
What the hell is a coal??
+1800NoFault Coil**
Musicadecunbias
Way to much work just to get too the spark plugs I did it without having take all that stuff off
They put all that bull shit on the motor. So they can make more money on parts.and msake it hard to work on
25 lbs torque. Not 10. 10 will blow out.
Why are Ford engines so complicated
Say 97 but actually a 99
20% of this is video is clips.
Way more complicated then it really is
This truck is a headache
Anybody else notice they skipped #4 that must be where Fords famous "special spark plug tool" is required
thats on the triton engine for the 5.4 which came a couple years later.
@14:24 for #4
The #4 is a bitch not enough room for my hand that’s the one that gives me the most trouble no special tool needed.
