Dave Canterbury, David Canterbury, The Pathfinder School,Bush Craft ,Survival skills, Historical Lore, Primitive Skills, Archery, Hunting, Trapping, Fishing, Navigation, Knives, Axes, Fire, Water, Shelter, Search and Rescue
Dave, I started following you back in 2007, oddly enough it was your first video when I found you.
"At that time" I was just starting to get into primitive archery, and to make my own self bows.
I have followed your videos ever since. I have learned tons of stuff from your videos.
I can not tell you in words how much I appreciate what you do.
The phrase "Thank you" just doesn't seem to do you justice.
Thank you Brother.
Johnny in Texas
This is seriously one of the most useful and educational channels on youtube.
Neither the length of a man's hair, nor his appearance, will ever reflect the contents of his heart, or his worth to others around him. We can, however, gauge a man's worth by his dogs. A rambunctious group of dogs messing up a video will always be a joyous occasion for most of us. Enjoyable discussion………. especially the dog's input. Never apologize for the dogs……… it made the video real. Peace
Dave what you are doing here is new. You are a teacher on a whole new level of teaching. What you are doing is equipping millions with the possibility of one day making it through a dire survival scenario, as someone else said, thank-you is not enough. I would listen to what you would have to say even if there were barking dogs in every video :)
probably one of my favorite videos... I think more people relate to a casual setting more than you might think.
You never cease to amaze me Dave. This was a totally down to earth honest discussion. I'm glad you acknowledge the facts and how you rebranded some history and reintroduced the philosophies. You had my respect before, even with the woodcraft conversation a couple days ago, but I really liked your talk today. Thanks for sharing everything you share.
I was just thinking the other day about how you've progressed into different avenues of your wood craft since watching all your youtube videos over the years, from where you started to where you are now. Really neat to be along for the journey with you Dave. Thank you for not forgetting where you came from and still putting out videos for us to watch and learn.
Since my grandparents and great grandparents aren't here to teach me the knowledge they acquired, my only option is to learn from others that dive headfirst into the past, and pass along this knowledge that used to be common place. For this I say thank you Mr. Canterbury.
one of your best videos. reflections of the past and where you come from, and looking forward to where you are going, i can only say thank you for taking all of us along for the ride with you. i have watched your first video and subscribed and been with you all the way up to this point. its been amazing, i have learned so much and gained so much and been gifted with so much. you still got a lot of trail ahead of you. we are all so anxious to see where it leads...
Thanks Dave! I've enjoyed all of our vids. Glad to see and hear that your school, store and life works are growing.
Thanks for all you do Dave.
Thanks again for the reminders, simplicity and back to basics.
rufus seems to know what's going on....."hey, he's talking to the camera thing, stop bugging him!" "we might get some meat for being nice"
This is why I love your vids Dave. Your laid back approach and just being real. Blessings to you.
I really enjoyed the history and your background on this one Dave. It's nice to sit back and just listen sometimes.
Hey Dave, just wanted to thank you for all the information and the videos. I do a fair bit of camping with my kids, and have used some of the things you have shown over time. Thanks for all you do and hope to see you on here for a long time to come. You are a very well informed man and very good at passing that knowledge on to others.
I remember my time in scouts. I hope its the same for my boys when get to that age. The full circle I've recognized in my life starts with the outdoors time with family as a kid, I moved off to tech and desk job, now with my own boys I find the value in the outdoors time. Scouting develops a natural curiosity and instills basic information that can be built on that allows us to be self reliant if the need be.
dave, your casual video felt more like a conversation than an educational piece. Quite pleasant. Thank you.
good topics , good looking dogs and a sunny porch ,couldn't ask for a better vid to relax and watch.
thanks dave for all you share
What dog? Thanks Dave from a Vietnam veteran who had long hair before and after his military service. Thank you for all you do to pass along knowledge and skills that matter to a whole new generation, it is much appreciated. As a thank you I try to buy all my gear from your store.
thank you for this excellent discussion. right on.
Great message of sharing knowledge Dave.
Thanks for sharing! You definitely are after the vein of those who started the scouting movement i. e. Baden Powell et al. Good talking points and great way of putting it. Thanks!!
I read those Sierra Club lists a few years back. Your 5 -10C's items and reasoning as to (why them) made me think the Sierra Club lists were written by amateurs sitting behind a desk. Maybe their list is more towards rescue and your list is more towards surviving. Sometimes I don't see eye to eye with you, but I still consider you as the "modern day" go to survival, bush craft, Guru/Expert that has already done the research and really does know what your talking about. I said it before, and I am going to say it again, Thank-you for all the effort and sharing you gift us with.
I've been watching your videos for years and my favorite format has always been this "unproferssional" (as you call it) style. This one brought together, concisely, bits and pieces that I've seen you talk about before explaining your evolution. I have long appreciated your method of takign those old skills and applying new technologuy where it makes sense. Keep up the great work.
And... btw... the dogs are awesome. Love the Beagle!
First, this was definitely one of the most enjoyable and humble videos you've made. Yes the dog barking was annoying however, you initially ignored it to the point that I thought it was perhaps my own dog barking. This may sound silly but....I enjoy when reality happens and gets caught on video without you editing it out. When the dog's accidentally hit the camera tripod and you chuckled. You seem extremely genuine in your desire to leave a legacy of learning survival / woodcraft skills. One day we will perish. It's what we leave behind that truly matters. It's how we light that fire within someone else to carry on the torch of teaching, if you will. To me it means motivating someone else to continue passing on the knowledge. I have learned an extraordinary amount of knowledge from all your videos and I am an avid viewer. Free useful knowledge is often very scarce now a days. Thanks for all that you do. Your time and experience are priceless and truly appreciated.
Native American history and their primitive weapons preferably the bow is what started me on this trek. I would never take for granted the time to have and needed to become an expert in this field, my heart is leading me this way. Thanks for sharing apart of your history of bushcraft/woodsman ship
L.B.
Great thoughts Dave. Thanks for sharing. As a long time viewer I actually remember that picture of you from way back on your old website a few years ago.
As a young man(24), I truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience with us here on youtube. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing Dave!
good stuff dave.
need to do more these vlogs. very informative, educational
That's super cool.. The dogs!! It's good to see transparency with this craft!! Blessings!
Thanks for an excellent message.
Clark and Virginia
Great stuff Dave! I think I've been watching you on YT for what 6 years now. Found you by chance talking about your kit on the tailgate of a pickup. Seems like a lifetime ago. You have a way of giving life to that older skill set from the trappers into today and I've enjoyed every video my friend. Wish I lived closer to ya. Keep up the great work brother!!!
Chris
I love your relaxed "unprofessional" videos :) They really show the Life ... and from Life we learn ...
You, Cody from Wranglerstar and Johnny Cash. The three persons in my life I learned the most from.
Keep on Dave, wonderful channel!
The only time you should STOP learning is when you're pushing up dasies. :) I'm currently 60 and hardly a day goes by that I don't pick up something new. If you look to learn, you will. If you look to be negative, you will. If you look to have difficulties with other people, you will. It's all about your attitude and will.
Where my wife and I took our Masters Degrees, the motto is, "Who seeks to teach must never cease to learn." I'm 73 and have never stopped believing that it is one of the basic truths we all must recognize.
I'm on that same path. I'm 51 now, and find myself looking for new things to learn. Sometimes I have the pleasure to show others things I know. I too take pleasure in teaching, and learning as well. My next favorite thing to do is invent. To make something that will solve a problem for me or some one else.,
Bruce Nitroxpro It's interesting to note that the most effective way to learn something is to prepare to teach it. Several studies have shown that when you tell someone that they're going to have to teach a subject they learn it far better that if you tell them that they're going to be tested on it, even when they're given the same materials and the same amount of time to prepare.
***** HAHAHA. Had to check out the mustache. Bad ass for sure brother!!!
Lol I love the DOG!!!! I have a beagle too, two of them. Only a beagle owner knows that the barking only stops with some attention. Enjoy Edrom18....
you are a very wise man. i have very much respect for you and what you do. i hope that that you will pass on your knowledge for many years to come. you are one of the people who got me interested in woodcraft/bushcraft/going out in the woods having fun and i am very thankfull for that.
greetings from austria
Lukas
Your best video yet, thanks for sharing dave, and freinds.
Good stuff Dave. Thanks for all you do.
Always enjoy your videos Dave hope I get to meet you someday.
very good video. My grandfather taught me a lot of the same things that you teach. he was a woodcrafter from the turn of the century. that is a part of why I have enjoyed your videos so much this year.
Great video Dave. I am never without my Ontario marine raider bowie and a magnesium bar. Love the dogs !

~much love from the sub-tropics brother!~ Keep On Keeping On.
No need to apologize, it was an awesome video.
Here is an old film of Swedish woodworking skills:
Traditional Swedish Woodworking: Clogs, Spoons and Chairs
I enjoyed your video Dave. Thanks for the history. You really are the best at what you do. and you have the best people too.
Great stuff as always, dave.
God bless
Really enjoyed the chat. Funny when you dogs were barking mine were running around, hopping on the bed to look out the window then went tearing out the back door to the yard looking for the barking. thanks and see you next time.
Great video, I like the way you're blending old and new to achieve the maximum benefit. Only makes sense.
Great video Dave thanks for sharing
Simply awesome! You are one of the few real deals.
I have enjoyed watching your videos since around 2009. I've also enjoyed seeing your transitions. I could make the similar vid showing a similar picture taken in 1986. The difference being that I didn't have long hair, and we were in the George Washington National Forrest. My process of enjoying the woods has transitioned form old to new to somewhere in between. Thanks for sharing what you have learned over the past years. I have learned from your vids, and enjoyed them.
Cute Beagle. I have a female part beagle, named Reagan. She went crazy trying to find the dog that she could hear when I played the vid. Great vid with sound wisdom.
Hi, Dave. I understand exactly what your saying. I notice a lot of people trying to fix things, make them better, Figure out how to do things better, figure out what to take. What they need. In my opinion, these things have already been figured out. Thousands of years of our ancestors already figured it out and tested it, over and over again they tested.
The problem is, most people don't know how they did it. Or they forget. Research on these subjects is so important. But it isn't easy reading all those books, Looking up all that stuff, then doing dirt time to get good at all that.
For some one to do all this, then break it down for others to consume this information easier, faster, and do it in a way that's easy to remember, Is a fantastic thing to accomplish. I think you have done that. From what I see, your accomplishment is affecting almost everyone in these fields. You can't hardly go to any web site that does "bushcraft, woodcraft, firecraft, survival", or something similar, and not hear your name somewhere in their videos. Or see some of your better products being used or tested.
I think your name will go on long after your gone. I've chatted with you on here, and in email, I've traded with you, (stone axe head for a compass) and in October during your book signing at the self-reliance outfitters store, I hope to meet you in person.
No matter who you are, there is always some one that dislikes you for one reason or another. Some people just look for a reason, wile others get jealous and hate. But those that aren't addicted to drama like me, Respect you. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see you in October. I hope to meet other like minded people there too.
Enjoyed the chat Dave, have a great week...
Great job Dave!
Good video. I think it's important for people to know more about your background and that like everyone else you are always growing and learning. The 21st Century long hunter series is one of my favorites, I know that my grandfather and great-grandfather used the best gear of their day with the knowledge of their fathers, and that's my goal as well. A lot of the knowledge in my family tree is simply gone, but you've helped me regain quite a bit of it. Thank you.
Be quit dog! lol Right on. My new grand son I'm looking forward to taking him hunting and getting back into hunting myself. He is 2 and loves to go fishing. Hope to take in the pathfinder class soon. Watching some videos folks made wooden bowls and cups, so your lips don't stick to the cup in the winter ouch.
Great video, thank you for your time
Really cool to see that old ad. Lots of people say that a knife should never be used to baton wood. People have been doing it for a long long time though, it seems.
Thanks for that. Your channel rocks. Much success!
Good video Dave, thanks for sharing and have a nice day
I think that coming "full circle," is something that many of us do. The newest and brightest, isn't always the best. Sometimes, it's just more expensive and has hidden flaws.
I love the info and transparent mentality you have, Dave. Only thing I didn't like about it was the dog barking lol. Raises my blood pressure like crazy lol
Dave, gotta say, I enjoyed the "Full Circle" video. If I could be so bold as to request more videos in this vain. I realize you've pretty much mixed old with new, when it works well, but maybe an approach of more details of old, then how something or some area has improved with some modern day tools AND where modern tooling doesn't improve what has worked for centuries. Just some thoughts. Thanks so much for your videos. Chris
Newer is not necessarily better... I'm an 18th century reenactor (Rogers Rangers, Rogers own Coy. from CT) I am also a scout master trying to teach the boys exactly what you are saying. Their idea of camping is coming to an event with tons of gear. I am slowly showing them a better, more natural way of camping. We have a primitive camporee coming up in October so we shall see how well i did.
Thank you for that viedeo! Awesome, just awesome, men!!!
The community need teacher like you, for sure!
God bless, jo
Thank you for a great history lesson. It is always good to look to the past and see how they did what you are trying to do. Say 'Hi" to Ruby for me. Beagles were my dog when I was young, they are the best family dog and where you live, the best environment for them.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work from which we all learn something new. Take care. ATB Chris
true, and great video! tnx & rgds, Robert

Thank you, and you're welcome, from michigan
NAILED IT! Thanks brother... keep up the good works!
Very Interesting information you give here. Thanks !
ive learned a lot from this channel thank you
Dave, do you have planz for an expedition [as you describe having done 'back in the day'] into the back-country any time soon... I imagine we'd all love to see a multi-part series of that sort? Why haven't you done a 'survival' series TV-show yet?
Outstanding. Yet there they are four knucklehead Trolls with the thumbs down.... Incredible. Keep being who you are Dave- it's appreciated.
truely amazing,
thank you.
great video, you have reached a great movie quality too,
Dedgum your old when that picture was taken i was like 11-12 in boy scouts and had only killed maybe five or six dear lol. Anyway funny how it happens. Your first video i remember which i was one of the first 100 subs was in 06 you had first started a plant kinda series you would eat it and not complain but your face said it all. I had a different name back then but anyway i watched all the way through getting ready for tv on the tracks and the signal to everyone once you did get on tv touching your chest but i guess they edited that out i know we talked aboutbthat once. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 7-8 years watching your progression and trying to do the same myself asidebfrom the hair ain't gonna happen. Brother ya got a nice family. You are blessed. Keep doing this for the right reasons. My family and i will be watching and supporting. God bless brother.
thanks DC for the vid. It settles a lot of dust. I understand your full circle thinking, I, too was a gear hog, newer/better thinking... See you on the boards. MG
You are full of knowledge brother. Love all your videos. I guess you are still getting hair questions lol, I'm pretty sure you spoke about it in a previous video and showed us that picture before. Ill meet you one day. :)
my dogs were barking at yours, funny shit, love the "unprofessional" stuff
love the dog, every woodsman should have one
Great rant!
Really good video !!! Thank You!!!
Dave, Super explanation on your full circle. Hey, how about doing a video on your favorite 18th century lifestyle books. Curious to see what you're reading or have on your bookshelf. Thanks man!
Well done.. as usual.
Love the Porch talk.
Thanks for the video.
Good video, Dave. Particularly at the 9:20-9:30 mark. Real important point. That's what happens in all the survival/historical shows (besides the whole engineered adversity thing), they do something with the same stuff but not the same background situation. You get these 40-year-old couch potatoes re-inacting something Roman centurians did in a mortally dangerous situation (like builting fortifications so they didn't get slaughtered) or like what knights in combat did after years of practice & exercise- it's just not the same kind of dynamics, just the same objects.
It always seems like eventually everything comes full circle. Always keep learning and moving forward.
Great video.
Gotta tell ya man, Id love to learn what you have learned. Not for money, but just to have the knowledge. What a feeling, knowing you can experience that life 200 yrs after the fact.
you are so real my friend!!
It's probably a really advanced survival topic, but I'd be interested in your views on another one of the Cs of survival- "canine".
I think the Searia Club wants you to have a map and cumpus so you can get out of "their woods" asap so you don't defile it.
Man I remember that flint Knapping video. I was into knapping (I think I just read Snow Crash) and was trying to get it down. Good times.
Thanks Dave for all you do, your going to have people hate and bitch about any and everything you do these are the unteachable people anyway.
