Dave got me hooked on the 12 ga singleshot with adapters. My kit is built on having my family with me. I am trying to build my personal kit but with trial and error. With my kit I have three good books on wild plants and trees.
like these vids. Even for us in the UK where the laws stop us carrying certain things like the shotgun and knives without a good excuse and an understanding police officer they are very informative and make me think about some things in a different way. Keep them coming! thnx Dan
Excellent video. Thank you very much for the information. I've spent a lifetime on expedition and adventuring in the wilderness and there's always something new to learn from others that have done the same.
Dave, do you still carry 3 rat traps in your pack? I remember seeing them in one of the first videos I saw of yours, if I remember correctly it was about the time you were showing the slingbow pretty heavily. It seems like a grand idea to carry at least 3 of them beings they are light weight and produce small game readily. If you do still carry them, then do you carry a bait for them as well? thx, good stuff
Thanks Dave. As usual you cover the needs in a way that few with outdoor experience can argue with. I've been playing recently with the Kelly Kettles and though they could be seen to break the rule of multifunctional, they can also be viewed as a container, stove and cooking pot. they do not offer the capability to make char cloth but can be used to char natural materials like punk.
Great video!!! I agree with everything he mentioned to pack. except I always add needles and thread. I find them important because eventually you will need to repair either your pack , shoes or clothes which are vital in the field and it ways next to nothing
I was impressed with this video, That seems like a lightweight and versatile overnight outdoor pack. I like how you conveyed a pack philosophy on what you call the basics. Thanks for the gear recommendations.
The assault pack is awesome! I have had one for a good while now. The two straps on top are for attaching it to the large ruck. But I have found other uses for those. On the back of my wheelchair I have a loop of cordage on each side. I run those straps through the cordage to hang the pack off my chair. I also hang grocery bags off them if my pack is full. I have had my assault pack for years now. It's a fantastic pack. Mine has some holes and fraying. But it's still going strong. I love the versatility of the MOLLE. The MOLLE sustainment pouches fit on the sizes nicely. I am tempted to get another one to build into a bugout bag. I have an ILBE pack. But given my current disability issues I need to keep the weight down if I have to walk. With a big pack it's easy to over pack it.
Great video Mr. Canterbury, what would you suggest for sleeping type of stuff like sleeping bags for a climate in the northeast USA like New York, Vermont, North Pennsylvania and even southeast Canada like Ontario/Quebec areas that can get from around 80 degrees F* in summer to around ~20 below 0F* on average, I’ve got a few different packs that cover several types of things; such as 1 main “Survival” Pack which covers all types of survival, 1 Minuteman/Militia Kit, 1 Scout type of kit. The latter two are still a work in progress. I also use a single shot 12 gauge for a “woods walk/survival” gun
This is the first time ive heard someone else elaborate kits properly. A kit should be constructed for sustainment, possibly long term, while utilizing the internal knowledge you have gathered.
keep reminding thoe . besides , you have been showcasing different products as well . makes my life easier when i cant see FIRST and purchase AFTER . we've spent few hundred we wont use again and will be "garbage sale" material . BTW LOVE the newer 39oz canteen cook set . another example is your latest on FIRE ; caused me to change technique for flint/steel and improve spark shower dramatically . keep it coming :) i wooda NEVER thot to fish with bank line either. thanx
I haven't hunted with a long rifle or long gun shotgun in years, more like 2 decades. I got tired of carrying the weight and their cumbersome maneuvering in the brush. It's fine if I was in open land like the desert of midwest but on the west coast the usual shot is
Our local surplus has the assault pack for $20. I bought one to attach to my full-size MOLLE as a separate hunting pack. It's good as a standalone as well. It's a great durable little pack for the price--
i love my pack. i watched one of your old videos and a newer one, and saw that the swiss military rucksack was a steal at amazon for less than $30, and that thing really is BOMBPROOF. not to mention it has a nice traditional look with the leather straps and belt buckles. now i just need a better wool blanket, cuz the u.s. army blankets aren't very warm at all. i want the duluth kephart bedroll, but i'm afraid if i want that, i'm going to have to make it, and i can't sew worth a crap.
I consider my hammock my warm weather sleep system because of the convection loss underneath (I do my skivvies in a fleece sleeping bag liner in mid 50's). You mentioned using the hammock for colder camping (I've done down to 0F) when talking about the Snugpak pad....do you only consider the hammock for mid temp ranges?
I use an economy grade shower curtain for a moisture barrio. Cost was 5 bucks, nearly puncture proof, weighs next to nothing and folds up to about 9"x12" under 1/2" thick. Grommets on one end only, of course, but it can be used as a rain cover with a little ingenuity as well.
Hey Dave do you remember some time ago you did a review for a transportable Solar Panel setup that could charge some of your devices? I haven't seen anything else on that, and I wanted to ask for your opinion on whether or not attaching it to the outside of your bag as a means of keeping crucial electronic devices charged with you would be worth it. Considering its weight and cost is a personal decision yes, but what do you think? Appreciate your time, thanks.
Dave, where do I get that hammock? Looked around under "short hammock ENO" & went to their site- couldn't find it. P.S.- Why not use that Marine pack you had earlier? Don't know how to send PM on RUclips anymore (it changed on me, now I can't get the screen) so I'd like to share some ideas with you: One is the spetsnaz shovel (put flathead self-boring screws in the handle will let you attach a longer handle easily with knife or flat twig). Wrap tarp around blanket to waterproof. Fubar tool.
Hope I'm not too late for a response on this one. I'm more partial to the 20 gauge for the "all around" shooter and because the 12's and 16's can put kids and women on their butts. Does the 20 not work for the adaptations you know of? Can it work as a muzzle loader?
Hey Dave, is that a ReeperzOutdoors Firesteel? I have one mike made custom for me...I love it. How do you like it so far? Great video, love that you are using the Assault pack, I used mine up until...I started using the newer Medium ruck in OCP about a year ago, have you used it?
Excellent video my friend,i appreciate your opinion and knowledge. You talk a lot about your trapline and animals and fish, frogs etc, that you can trap and shoot let's see you make a vid on field dressing Deer or small game. This vid sounds a bit like an infomercial.Everyone has their own preference with what they carry in the field, bush etc.Just a thought, stay safe.
Thanks for vid and for addressing the Duluth pack point for us po' folks, hehe. BTW, like that hat, it looks like it would be good in hot weather/breathes well, what kind is it?
Can I just ask what you do with the wool blanket if you're walking and it rains. Do you have to stop and wrap it in one of the garbage bags? Quite like the idea of replacing my sleeping bag with one.
i've come to love nylon webbing, super strong stuff. you can sew your own molle attachments all day long over everything! I'm 6'6" and need a recommendation on a pack for super tall guys, people
Hey just wanted say great video on sleep out in bush but to the guys and ladies that are just getting into bushcraft you might want to spend couple nights outside in the backyard to find a sleep system that works for you cause you will be surprised how much your body is use to pillows and beds just a heads up
What's the total weight of your kit? Also including any type of weapon or tool you might carry into the woods. I'd love to know where you set the mark for yourself.
I'm trying to find that pack online but all I can turn up is the new style marpat assault packs. If someone could PM me a link in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Good video Dave
A few years ago you made a movie with the ILBE Assault Pack, what is your opinion on that now two years later? I have one and love it, I just don't want to load it up and go too far with it on my back :)
Really like the BOB mentality your addressing a little more here. Another solid video brother. Any idea when the 2qt camp pot will be back in stock? Ive been trying to buy one for months.Keep up the hard work man.
Nice and helpful vid dave! i have send you a email last week coz i had i a question and a opinion about my pack dont know if you read it yet or forgot it or something :P thanks a lot for the great vids keep it up bro!
Great vid brother! I would suggest anyone on a tight budget to check out your "Discount Bushcraft Kit" series. I too would like a Duluth pack someday, but I went with a Swiss rubberized mountain ruck for $30 and it's dang near bombproof. There's a big misconception that you have to spend big $ on kit in order to hit the woods. Not so, you can buy surplus on the cheap, then save for the good stuff that you'll only need to buy once. Example: PLSK1, I'm confident I will never have to buy another.
I know you've probably got a roll of duct tape in there. Probably a headlamp, compass, mirror, tweezers, pliers, lansky diamond rod and slingshot band too.
Dave got me hooked on the 12 ga singleshot with adapters.
My kit is built on having my family with me.
I am trying to build my personal kit but with trial and error.
With my kit I have three good books on wild plants and trees.
fishing line and a few hooks would be a great addition to any pack I think. Love the video's, keep em coming!
You are a national treasure. Keep up the great work!
like these vids. Even for us in the UK where the laws stop us carrying certain things like the shotgun and knives without a good excuse and an understanding police officer they are very informative and make me think about some things in a different way. Keep them coming! thnx Dan
Just wanted to say Thank You for the time you take to make sure WE have the knowledge to be better prepared for any situation that may come up.
Excellent video. Thank you very much for the information. I've spent a lifetime on expedition and adventuring in the wilderness and there's always something new to learn from others that have done the same.
You sound like a natural teacher. Thanks for spreading the knowledge

Great intel! I need to get one of your poncho tarps!
Thanks again dave for another good the block of instruction.
Great video Dave. I watch these and pick up a new tip almost every time.
Great video!!! I agree with everything he mentioned to pack. except I always add needles and thread. I find them important because eventually you will need to repair either your pack , shoes or clothes which are vital in the field and it ways next to nothing
Good point but he carrys a sail needle and cordage on him
Great vid! Thanks for the intel! It's always nice to see what others carry!
Love all your videos thanks for sharing always learning
Dave, Thanks man, I sure enjoy your videos.

I have bean told that frog legs is the only part you can eat is that true? and if you did a vid on this it would be cool thanks
Great video dave thanks keep them coming dave thanks again
Good to see you on you tube dave
things i learned today, the 5 c's container, combustion, cordage, cover, cutting.
This is the first time ive heard someone else elaborate kits properly.

Never thought of tossing in a frog gig. Great idea!

Thanks for the video Dave..
Dave I hunt and live near Swamp. Would there be any other item you would carry for wetlands?
Thanks for all you do. It is a great channel.
Our local surplus has the assault pack for $20. I bought one to attach to my full-size MOLLE as a separate hunting pack. It's good as a standalone as well. It's a great durable little pack for the price--
Love the videos thanks with the help you have given me

Very good. Thank you very much
Thanks Dave...another basic, informative video. ( I've come to expect nothing else...).
Thanks for that. Greethings from Germany
Dual survival sucks without you, man.
Hey Dave, what do you think of a G.I. surplus bivy cover as a short term or warm weather sleeping bag? Also how do rate the SOL emergency bivies?
Thank you for your vids you give a lot of information for free thank you for shearing it !
Another great videao. gracias. What is more practical in your opinion? shotgun or crossbow? and why?
What is approximately the sise of queen size wool blankets? I would like to now if my portuguese army wool blanket is about the same size.
iv been trying to decide between the plsk1 and the scout knife. why is it that you prefer the scout knife? thanks for all the vids and information.
I swear you have done this topic at least 10 times
I use an economy grade shower curtain for a moisture barrio. Cost was 5 bucks, nearly puncture proof, weighs next to nothing and folds up to about 9"x12" under 1/2" thick. Grommets on one end only, of course, but it can be used as a rain cover with a little ingenuity as well.
Thomas I don't know if you've ever had experience with woodland camo but it works amazingly well I highly prefer it to digital anything especially ACU
Would a jewlers loupe work as good as a magnifying glass, 20x easier to start a fire over 6x?
Hey Dave do you remember some time ago you did a review for a transportable Solar Panel setup that could charge some of your devices? can you please do a longer vid on fixin wax and its uses

Does the 20 not work for the adaptations you know of? Can it work as a muzzle loader?
I was wondering, how much does this kit weigh in at, approximately ?
someone reminded me, that even a fabric hammock is a tarp
Nice video. Thank You
dave I noticed you have not updated the SAN in a long time. will you be shooting more this winter.
I'm guessing that is the $150 100% wool blanket rather than one of the others based on color and size?
Hey Dave, is that a ReeperzOutdoors Firesteel? I have one mike made custom for me...I love it. How do you like it so far? Great video, love that you are using the Assault pack, I used mine up until...I started using the newer Medium ruck in OCP about a year ago, have you used it?

The Fjallraven Vintage 30 is a great common man pack with a duluth pack/vintage look to it.
Can I just ask what you do with the wool blanket if you're walking and it rains. Do you have to stop and wrap it in one of the garbage bags? Quite like the idea of replacing my sleeping bag with one.
I like to carry a 24" buck saw and hatchet during our winters.
great video cheers
i've come to love nylon webbing, super strong stuff. you can sew your own molle attachments all day long over everything! I'm 6'6" and need a recommendation on a pack for super tall guys, people
very nice infos, thanks
dave here in the uk firearms certificates are really hard to come by and bow hunting is illegal what would you recomend for hunting meat?
Looks like Dave has been working out!
A lot of the knives for sale on your website cost a lot more than I can afford so what do u think is the best knife under $100?
Hey just wanted say great video on sleep out in bush but to the guys and ladies that are just getting into bushcraft you might want to spend couple nights outside in the backyard to find a sleep system that works for you cause you will be surprised how much your body is use to pillows and beds just a heads up
darn im going to Wyoming soon and hoped it was there so i could do that with my dad :(
What's the total weight of your kit? Also including any type of weapon or tool you might carry into the woods. I'd love to know where you set the mark for yourself.
Dave, which do you prefer better Eno hammock or TrekLight hammock? Thanks
Where did you get the Survival Stock and what was is the price point?
I'm trying to find that pack online but all I can turn up is the new style marpat assault packs. If someone could PM me a link in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Good video Dave
A few years ago you made a movie with the ILBE Assault Pack, what is your opinion on that now two years later? I have one and love it, I just don't want to load it up and go too far with it on my back :)
Hey Dave what hat are you waring?
Thanks for the ideas while I build my kit.
You cant beat an alice pack for the money.
What size alice pack do you recomend?
thanks
Why would you prefer an external pack over an internal pack?
The Godfather of Bushcraft
Hey ya Dave! New subscriber here “I’m picky who I subscribe to” could u tell me how I can get the decal .75 Lyr pan? Love ur videos
Thanks
Hello! What brand of pack is that?? Rothco by chance?
Hey Dave, is that a 5L or 10L dry bag? Thanks.
How do I I buy something at the pathfinder store can’t even look at the sight without a login and no where to create one
Dave, why don't you have lanyards on your fire steel and pocket knife to attach to your belt? I would be afraid to drop something out of my pockets.
Really like the BOB mentality your addressing a little more here. Another solid video brother. Any idea when the 2qt camp pot will be back in stock? Ive been trying to buy one for months.Keep up the hard work man.
My kit is pretty light, heavier in the winter though!!!
is your basic camp thing in Wyoming?
what kind of pack is that
Why do u carry the scout knife more than the plsk1?
Nice and helpful vid dave! i have send you a email last week coz i had i a question and a opinion about my pack dont know if you read it yet or forgot it or something :P thanks a lot for the great vids keep it up bro!
um how do you sleep outside if bear wants your food on you or eat you :(
What kind of bag is that?
tie knots in the corners and use some cordage to tie off. make a loop and steak or tie off to a tree
I need to get off work and get down to Pathfinder.
